I usually think of INST vs LINE as "Level" related and INPUT IMPEDANCE as a "Tone" (via pickup loading) setting. As pointed out, switching to 1M from AUTO solves the problem, and in fact there's an <>8db difference between AUTO (22k?) and 1M. So now I'm confused about the relationship between Input LEVEL and Input IMPEDANCE? Can you straighten me out on this?

I had a GF who didn't have one - just sayin'... :-) -
Input impedance affects the high frequencies through its loading of the guitar pickups (geeky electronics stuff). There may be a perceived volume drop due to the lack of highs if the input impedance is significantly lower than 1M, but that's not what's happening here. Those FX just need their Output Level parameter increased. A simple case of Occam's Razor. Keep in mind that if you're using an analog (or digital) effect between the guitar and Helix, THAT is what's loading your pickups. If the effects are True Bypass then the total cable run between the guitar and Helix is affecting the highs by virtue of cable capacitance (more geeky electronics stuff). Likewise, if you're using a wireless, most load the pickups at 1M to match what the load would be going direct into the amp's input. Active pickups are immune to all of it.

Yes. If imitating dual guitarists is your goal you can have two different amps panned hard L/R through two different cabs with totally custom mics and positioning and up to 50 ms delay on one.

Catalyst is a DIGITAL, not ANALOG amp. When you switch channels you are NOT switching electronic circuits (speed of light), you are UNLOADING a PRESET and LOADING a new PRESET. Just like on a Helix. There WILL be a couple of ms audio dropout. The solution is to time your changes so that you're not playing 16th notes or sustaining a note. If this is a deal-killer, return the amp. That is the only solution. Gapless preset switching can be done on Helix by sacrificing an entire processor to "Preset Spillover". It is available natively on the Roland GT1000 (uses chips of their own design/mfr). I've heard there are some others.

I'm sure someone from the MAC camp will respond soon, but in the meantime I'll take a shot at it. I use Reaper. Reaper has default Hotkeys for transport control. I looked those up and set up footswitches accordingly. I created a MIDI track to take input from Helix and send Output BACK to Helix. With the Track Monitor Switch in Reaper set to OFF (to prevent a MIDI feedback loop) I used the Helix FS to start RECORD, switched Snapshots/Presets several times, and hit the STOP FS. Everything worked as expected when I hit the PLAY FS. What's happening to you sounds like either a MIDI Feedback Loop or you're using Hotkeys from Helix that have other default functions assigned in Logic X. I can only ASSUME that Logic X also has default Hotkeys. Be sure to use those or lookup the list of Logic X Hotkeys and make sure you're not using something that has another function. In the MIDI Track, make sure that the Track Monitor Switch is OFF to prevent the dread MIDI Feedback Loop. I'm not clear what you mean by "As soon as I add the automation track". Do you mean when you PLAY it? Also, when you switch patches/presets, be sure there's not an Instant Command or Toggling FS that's interfering.

Attach the errant preset so someone can have a look at it.

The Aux In is Mono, and would require a separate path so yeah, special presets. The USB cable I suggested (with appropriate connectors) is universal - audio from USB1/2 on the iPad goes direct to the Helix output that you specify in Global Settings.

You need to make sure that the Control Switcher is set to the same MIDI channel as the Helix, or that the CommandCenter command is sending on whatever channel the Control Switcher is set to. You also need to tell the Control Switcher to use CC#s. Instructions for both begin on Page 8 of the manual. I can't describe the procedures any better than the manual does. Attached is a demo preset showing how to switch channels via Snapshots. MIDI Channel is set to BASE which is, by default, MIDI Channel 1. The Control Switcher defaults to MIDI Channel 1 also, but check. Check Global Settings to see what your device (HXS, XL, FX, Floor, Rack - you didn't specify that) is set to. AFAICT the CC VALUE doesn't matter, so I've left it at the default of 0. You can try changing that to 127 if all else fails. Since you didn't specify what amp you have, I can't tell you how to set the Control Switcher "Switch Function". This is VERY important and might possibly cause damage to the amp if set wrong. Check your amp's manual or contact the mfr's support team to be sure. miami vice.hlx

If you can live without HX Edit while she's doing her homework, a "camera kit" will bring the iPad Audio in. My iPad has a "lightning" connector and this was a cheap solution: Amazon.com: AGVEE [5ft Lightning OTG MIDI Cable USB Type-B Cord Compatible with iPhone iPad iOS for Piano, Midi Controller, Midi Keyboard, Audio Interface Recording, Black : Musical Instruments There's also Type C connector versions.

This is not the intended purpose of the "Compensated Out". Try using the FX Loop. Look up "4 cable method" in the HXFX Manual (page 10). From the Diezel Einstein Manual: 3.2.4 Compensated Out A frequency corrected signal will leave this jack if you connect it to a mixer or recording device. Use it to quietly compose or send an auxiliary signal to a console etc. Always make sure that your amp is hooked to either a speaker or a load (i.e. THD Hot Plate).

In Stomp Mode you can assign a FS to load a Snapshot, so you could assign two switches to load Snapshots. However, how you do it could be tricky. You need to think beyond the initial Snapshot change. When you're in the new Snapshot, what do you want those two switches to do? Consider - You have 3 Snapshots. You only need to FS1 to toggle between SS1 and SS2. If you use FS2 to go to SS3, then in SS3 you want FS1 to go to SS1 and FS2 to go to SS2. Remember that whenever you assign a Stomp Mode FS to a CommandCenter Function, that FS is assigned to that function in EVERY Snapshot. Each Function has a default action associated with it. If you change that action in SS1 (for instance), SS2 and SS3 will still be assigned the default action. IOW - once you've assigned a Function to a FS in one SS, that FS needs to know what to do in EVERY SS, else it will perform its default action. Attached is a demo preset. Note the FS assignments in each SS. FS3 is always the delay bypass. lorenleonard.hlx

No worries. I hadn't heard about the Pilot. It looks like a cool solution to many users' problems. Any day that I learn something new is a good day!

The questions you asked don't reflect the experience you claim or the reading you claim to have already done. Believing that I was dealing with a relative newbie I've been careful to provide useful info and to be as gentle as possible about my suggestions re learning the gear. My time is valuable too, and I took the time to find out what the Pilot is and watch the video. I also took the time to refresh my memory on the MC6 features by referring to the MC6 manual. Again, since you didn't seem to be familiar with the concept of "MIDI THRU" I assumed newbie. Now that I've been schooled on your extensive experience and knowledge I feel like a fool for taking the time to do your homework for you. Best of luck with your future adventures in the Digital Wonderland.

The Pilot and the MC6 are both MIDI Controllers. They do NOT pass audio. The HXS Looper audio will always pass out through the L/R Main Outs UNLESS you put the Looper in Path B and split the outputs. In that case the Looper audio would be routed to the SEND and you would need to change Global Settings>Ins/Outs>Phones monitor = SEND to hear it. Using the Pilot with the MC6 is possible, but a totally unnecessary complication and waste of pedalboard space. The MC6 can handle it all, you just need to read the manual. But, if you INSIST, the MIDI OUT port on the MC6 also functions as MIDI THRU, though it's not labelled as such. Connect the MIDI cable from the Pilot to the MC6 MIDI In and make sure that MIDI THRU is enabled on the MC6 (RTM!). Connect the MC6 MIDI Out to the HXS MIDI In. WARNING! I'm going to assume, based on its basic marketing premise, that you bought the Pilot due to it being a "No MIDI knowledge required" device. The MC6 is NOT like that. It is one of the most powerful MIDI Controllers on the market. It has more functions than you can shake a stick at. No worries. If you're going to dedicate the MC6 to operating the HXS Looper you'll be using less than 1% of the MC6's capabilities. It has an excellent GUI Editor, but you WILL have to RTM. While you're at it, you should probably spend some quality time with the HXS manual... just sayin'.

The TT2 is a simple analog switch. Connect it with a TRS cable to the FS 4/5 - Exp pedal jack. The Pilot is a (very) simple non-programmable MIDI Controller. Connect it with a MIDI cable to the HXS MIDI In. Neither device transmits audio. The looper audio comes out the Main L/R Outs. The HP when set to Phones Monitor Main L/R monitor the Main L/R Outs.

When you use a MIDI Monitor to look at the messages actually being sent, are all 3 switches sending the proper messages?

Wrong forum. Nobody from L6 hangs out here. If you really want the L6 folks to see your suggestions post them here: Log in | Line 6 Ideas (ideascale.com) Search first so as not to dilute the vote. Post your ideas separately. I, for one, NEVER vote for multiple ideas in a single post.

Use the full amp + cab/IR when going direct to FOH or FRFR. Use the full amp w/o cab/IR when going into a solid-state amp and guitar cab. Use the preamp when going into a tube amp's return and guitar cab (unless the full amp sounds better).
-
Why not just try it and see? It can't break anything, at worst you'll get an error message.

I tried the MIDI thing and it worked, with the caveat that you can't expect the Snapshot Bypassed effect that's being turned OFF with MIDI to turn ON again when you switch snapshots again. Also, if you're already using MIDI for something else it could get complicated. Connect a short MIDI Cable from the MIDI IN to the MIDI Out. Make sure that Global Settings>MIDI>MIDI THRU = OFF. Set the MIDI BYPASS of the Distortion to an unused CC# (I used 11 for my test, as long as it's not a number used by Helix you should be OK). In the snapshot that you want the Rotary ON/Distortion OFF set an Instant Command on the Helix BASE Channel to CC#11 (or whatever) VALUE = 0. Now when you load the Rotary SS it will turn OFF the Distortion, but unless you load that SS the Distortion will be ON or OFF per the expected SNAPSHOT BYPASS rule.
-
Snapshot Bypass is all or nothing. You can't set it for "all snapshots except". I do not think that there is a way around this. IIRC, I wanted to do something similar at one time and could not work it out. EDIT: now that I think about it, I think I resolved it by using MIDI to go around the Snapshot Bypass logic. However, again IIRC, it caused a problem when returning to another SS where the Snapshot Bypass SHOULD have had it ON. Sorry my memory is not better, it was a LONG time ago. You could always try it.

Since I never buy Marketplace stuff I was unaware of the "plectrum" thingy. Good to know!

Is the JS preset free or paid? If free, attach a copy. NOT the preset as exported from HX Edit, the preset in its original downloaded version.
