Its also possible that I am misunderstanding what we're trying to do.

1. I guess that depends on what amp head you are using. (Pre/post/master) 2. He can get out of the fx loop and go in the guitar input. If the pod sounds good at home when designing patches. But like crap through his various rigs. - EQ the rig. Or, at least, that's my take on it.
-
True. There is a difference between X and non-X. That part should be self explanatory, and if its not then you can find countless webpages (with audio and video) showing the differences. But, other than the generational differences, it really boils down to your usage. Rack unit or floor unit. We can't answer that for you.

Headphones or straight to the PA. And sound quality for any other usage isn't important, so I use whatever is nearby.
-
Not 4cm. I go direct to PA. No stage amps. And yes, global eq should work. But we don't have it yet. Plus, his amps have eq's on them. Why wouldn't that work for room shaping? *although, so many amp and eq possibilities in the equation, its easy to misunderstand.

I am always playing with different people. The difference, though, is that I go straight to the PA. And really, why use amp models if you are going through an amp. What I do, for the things I do regularly, is use a separate set of patches. Band #1 gets these patches -- adjusted accordingly. Band #2 gets these patches -- adjusted for what is needed for them. And so on. So, even though some of the 'master' patches overlap, they get tweaked and saved separately. Short of letting the sound guy mix you through the PA, the only suggestion would be to use the amp's tone controls. Make your patches with amp the eq flat, and then use the eq to adjust to the rooms you are in. Its certainly easier to twist the 4 physical knobs on your amp than it is to adjust patches every time.

Some Demos of the POD HD worth sharing on here i think..

We are talking about sound creating. Who else are you going to be a fanboy of. Slash? Get a Marshall, a Les Paul, and use a wah when needed. Yngwie? Get a Marsall, a Strat, and add lots of echo. Pink Floyd, however, is very intricate with sound. Unlike other bands, an improperly made patch will kill a perfectly played PF song. Even EVH's 'brown sound' isn't needed to play a VH song. -
But if they didn't put those 'useless' tones in the machine... How would one know some of the things the machine is capable of.

The source could be wrong, it is the internet, anyone can say anything. And then the misinformation gets repeated. But, yes, shaving the rubber (based on what I saw at the time) voided the warranty. That is why I started my statement with "I don't suggest anyone do anything to void a warranty."

i bought mine used, so i wasn't concerned about a warranty. But in my research to find why I couldn't engage the pedal, I saw that it did void a warranty.

For me, it boils down to: What are you looking for? If I had wanted to add a unit to my already large rig, I would have gotten the rack unit. OK, let me rephrase that so I can be totally honest. If I wanted to add to my rig, I wouldn't have gotten either of these. But in order to answer the question, hypothetically, I would have gotten the rack. So that I could keep it all organized in a neat little box. However, what I was looking for was not to ADD to a rig, but to REPLACE a rig. I carry my guitars, my HD500, and a utility bag (strings/tools/cords/etc). No racks. No amps. Life - simplified. So, really, what is your usage going to be? Are you doing like I do. Which is putting your entire setup on the floor at the front of the stage near the microphone - which is where my old controller used to go. Or are you putting a 12 space rack in the back of the stage so that it doesn't block a fan's view, but still needing to drag a pedalboard across the stage near the mic to be able to control it. .

I would skip the POD when going from PA to headphones. But that is just me and my situation. I use headphones (regular dollar store headphones, nothing special) at places like my home. And I have a wireless set of headphones that I can use anytime. On stage, I mostly use the floor monitors. But when I am required to use IEMs, they are provided for me. Which is why I say 'based on my situation'. If needed, I can have it split, me coming out of the right and everything out of the left. It goes straight from the board to my ears. No coming back to anything. No reason to input it back to the pod. Would skipping the Pod work for you?

They are now owned by Yamaha. There ARE big corporate now.

these are not an amplifier.

1. http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/ 2. Customtone has over 6000 files you can download. Check to see what you like, and then check what they used. 3. I suggest you make sure you have all of the update software.

it wouldn't be the physical pedal because he said it works when assigned to volume

don't keep us in suspense. What was wrong with it

Fixing what some people think is wrong with the current eq options is one thing. Not enough DSP or blocks is a separate issue all together. This is a separate eq. A global eq, that is to be used for "room correction". It is not meant to be part of patch design. You are correct though. Calling it the eq block would make sense if it was available per patch. And there is already an eq block. But the new one is not per patch, its global.... Much how the Master Volume is global. Regardless of how you have your volume/mixer set within a patch, the master volume (could also be called, global volume) controls the overall volume of the unit. The global eq (master tone controls) are the overall tonality.
-
BINGO Although, I am going to take it one step further by saying: I don't think I am going to download the update for awhile. I don't need a global eq for room correction. I plug straight into the PA. That is the sound man's job to make it sound pretty in a room. Then its not really global, now is it? They are kind of the same thing. You are designing your patches partly based on the environment you are in when you are designing them. When you change environments, your sound changes. The perfectly designed patch sounds like garbage. So, one could say that the final tone shaping tool IS room correction. There are already numerous eq's that you can use in each patch. A global eq is not based per patch. It is global. It affects ALL patches. It even engaged when using a "blank patch". IT IS GLOBAL

LOL@GARAGE BAND Even days later, and in a quote instead of the original post... its still funny

You didn't ask for examples of our work that fulfills our tastes based on our playing styles. You asked " How can I determine the right combination?" BUT NOW THAT WE KNOW YOU WANT EXAMPLES. MAYBE PEOPLE WILL POST SOME FOR YOU.

There's always something new coming. It doesn't mean that the HD series will be discontinued. It just means that the new versions will come out. But do you really think it will be released this soon? Its only been a year since the 500x has come out.
