Same question, but altered... Does the 500 have a stereo guitar in? Meaning, my old stereo guitar (I no longer own), had two jacks BUT, one of them could use a stereo cord. So I could still get the stereo effect with one cord. But it would need plugged into a stereo input (single jack that reads two signals). Does the 500 have this, or would you need to run the two input method?

On the 500, as stated above, each full number is a half-step. -1 E becomes Eb. -5 E becomes B. -12 E becomes E. +1 E becomes F. +5 E becomes A. +12 E becomes E. The reason why its not listed as 'half step' --- I do not work for Line6 so I don't know the answer. But it makes sense to not call it a half step because there are so many steps inbetween 0 and 1. For example: Your G-string runs at 196hz. If you tuned down 1/2 step, you would be playing 185hz. What if you wanted to play 190hz? Its not a half step, it is something else. What would you do if you were limited to 1/2 step and whole step? You're screwed. Sure, it makes sense to have a half step tuning. And maybe on a next release, they can work on a physical switch that sits beside the ground switch. who's sole purpose is to tune a half step (3 position switch with 0 -1/2 -1). Make it a global setting which is independent of all other settings. But the idea of a pitch shifter, as already exists, is a bazillion times better than 'a half step down'.

Why does tuning live matter? Learn the songs the way they need to be learned... like tuning down (with the machine) for Eb songs. That way your Cchord is at the 3rd fret, even though it sounds like a Bchord. But when it comes to playing live, just play the 3rd fret Cchord. Do you think it makes a difference if, when playing live, you are at an exact pitch as a record? It only matters that everyone in the band is at the same pitch. What are you going to do when you need to play some old Van Halen stuff, where he tunes down midway between E and Eb? Do you think anyone will know that the entire band is a quarter tone off? Ripper, I am not going to deny the experience that you had. I wasn't there, you were. But what you said makes no sense. Assuming you have it set to detune, and you do not have one of the many harmony effects engaged, a pitch shouldn't warble. Its not harmonizing anything, its simply tuning the note - any note. Not even notes, notes is a bad word to use. It is changing the hz that you hear. The amount of cycles per second gets changed, its not putting out A into Ab, its putting out 440hz down to 415hz. So, if you tuned to 432hz for your A. And you were set to detune to a -1 (which most people call a 1/2 step), it would not play the same 415hz that Ab was before. It would make the adjustment based on the lower 8hz, and put out a 407hz (possible 406, since tuning is exponential, not equal). the 407 represents a half step lower than the played pitch. That is why bending a guitar string doesn't warble either. I know this may get technical, but we are all musicians, so we should understand this stuff... Harmonic overtones. Sub-tones. The unheard frequencies that we can't hear but hate when a machine removes them... They are the reason that a needle on a (cheap) guitar tuner will go all over the place when you are trying to tune. Ripper, try turning the volume down on your guitar. Could it be possible that your tuner is picking up some of those tones?
-
I don't use a 'glide'. I don't need to detune live. But at home, when learning songs I use the tuner to adjust to various tunings so I can learn in the right finger position regardless of the heard note. So here is my opinion... As with any effect. Where you put it in the chain makes a difference. I have no problem with 'quality'.

How Do You Use Your Expression Pedal Besides Volume And Wah?
pianoguyy replied to stumblinman's topic in POD HD
Sorry, I don't hear what you are talking about. Its 'modern' music. I only have it on mp3. Not vinyl. So I may be missing parts --- which has been a complaint about digital compression since its inception. To me, it sounds like picking technique and a wah. So I am bowing out of the conversation. -
How Do You Use Your Expression Pedal Besides Volume And Wah?

You're telling me that every Disco song in the 70's used the tone knob on the guitar instead of a wah? I guess I've been playing wrong. -
1. The issue with the Variax seems like an issue with the dealer. And since it is a dealer they then have an issue with Line 6, not you. Either way, its certainly not the forum's issue. 2. You are stuck with the 500 because you don't have a Variax? Have you considered USING the 500, its certainly worth the money you paid.

isn't that just a wah? -
they can create and send them as bundles/setlist so that you only have to work with one file but still get 512 patches. No, you cannot (as of today) create a bundle/setlist within explorer. You need the Line6 software. I feel your pain, bro. I play in multiple projects, so every show needs a different setup. I am loading all of the patches individually each and every time to adjust for genre AND order of songs. I liked the old days when I was in one touring band, and we used the same setlist every night for an entire tour.

going from 300 to 500 is all about features. how many bells and whistles do you want. there's no real reason to go from a 500 to a 500x, but if you are going to go from the 300 to a 500, you may as well do the full upgrade and make it the x... although, with namm right around the corner. wait a few weeks to see what new and exciting products are coming.
-
I am going to share my two cents,,, but since I am a part time professional advice giver, my two cents is worth a lot more.... 1. I bought a product with x-amount of features. I bought it based on those features, not based on the possibility of features that may come. Other than fixing bugs, I am not expecting anything else. Also, I have seen situations where (in other products) I did not like the 'new and improved' to the point that I wouldn't have bought the thing and have reverted back to the old version (when possible). 2, It takes time to compile 'wish lists' from thousands of people. It takes more time to develop the ideas into software. It takes time to integrate them into current software. And unless you want a new update every week, you do a large mass of them at a time. 3. Just about everyone that is posting is still learning the current features, and do not utilize all of its capabilities. Why do you need more. 4. Why are people getting so aggro over it.

while on the subject.... where is the window position stored? Usually those are in an inf file or in the registry. I can't seem to find a place to reset the position.... I know I can just move it, but my OCD is kicking in and if its not exact, its not exact.

it was a fairly recent update that only affected Windows 7 negatively. And, yes, if you have the auto update feature turned on, it should have gotten (or will on the next check) the fix too. So.... Now its time for someone else to help. Just needed to make sure that wasn't the issue.
-
so would an audio tape if you were recording it.
-
its not a stupid one. Some items are like that, and some are not. For example -- Just within the pod itself. The amplifier knobs. You program them. The patch recalls the setting. The physical knobs do not become active until they are moved. Then, of course, you have you patch volume at 2 and the physical knob at 8, the minute you touch it is when you hear a big WHAMMO.
-
of course a longer cord will cause delays. everybody knows this. The question is -- how much delay. As pfsmith said, 2ns/ft. Does it really matter?
-
did this start before or after the microsoft windows 7 update that screwed up everyone's computer? and then, did you get the update for the update?
-
If you are just going to do some online gaming computer recording, then I agree with the guy that says to get a guitar cord that is 1/4" to usb, and then let the studio programs do the rest. In fact, you could maybe even buy a midi guitar? HOWEVER The HD500 (HD500x if you want to buy it new at a store) will give you everything in one box. Live. Studio. Band practice. Home practice. Literally, you take the same single pedalboard with you. None of this crap where you have the live rig and the live rig for big shows, and a studio rig, and a rig for practice, and a rig for at home. One box, all applications.

never use untested gear. I had my pod months before I used it outside of the house. First practice. Then a "open mic". Then a little show that didn't matter. Hell, I still am not 100% pod'd. For some things, I am all pod, but others, I am still using my old stuff. Because, like you, I just don't have the time to learn everything all at one time. Especially since this old dog has been doing the same trick for 30 years. But, yes, I concur with the other guy: it sync's when you are connected. Disconnect.
-
no offense to line6 when I say this: Instead of buying two or three pods, why not just buy one of the better, more professional grade, units.

up until 1994-ish, my personal rehearsal compound (which is different than where the bands rehearsed) was about twenty feet from a major highway, with no 'privacy wall'. All of the utilities wires were above ground and ran along the highway and then, of course, branched off to connect with the building. I did not even have a pod back then, but I picked up every trucker's CB that drove by. We did not have wi-fi, cell phones, or satelite radio back then. So, I have no idea how those things may have affected the same gear. But terrestrial radio did not interfere. Cordless telephones did not interfere (but I can't know if any were around). Only the CB's. I never found a cause. It happened to every combination of gear. Except using a guitar with a Rockman Soloist with headphones. Oddly enough: the only thing that ever had interference was my gear and one fm radio (not all of them). BUT if I recorded (onto cassette tape) the radio while a cb ran by, I would hear the cb live but not on the tape. Which makes me think that it had something to do with the speakers and not necessarily the electronics. Sorry I am no help. But I know your pain.

when you say that you disconnect and it goes nutso, I can only assume so much as to your actual usage. So forgive me if I am way off bass (get it, bass? lol). First, I agree with BillBee. Edit and save on the unit itself. But here is another option: I am constantly making 'setlist' changes based on the next gig. That way I do not have to scroll all over the place. So I have every individual file saved. What I would do, if I were you, and this is something I learned through trial and error: dial in your sound. save the patch to the pc. bring the patch back the the pod. here is the important thing: do not do anything once your stuff gets "sync'd" disconnect the pc. Switch out of the current patch, and then switch back. See if your sound works better that way. ===== maybe, even then try to do the edit on the machine too

of course, the obvious answer is NAMM and new stuff. Combined with every major retailer discounting items for christmas --- or whatever the pc term for it is. But, Best Buy (who's ceo left to go run guitar center) is also having some major sales on music gear. The catch is - its unadvertised and is on a per store basis. So you may find a Gibson Les Paul, I may find a Marshall. I know, I know, I know. BEST BUY? But yes, actual gear, not the Maestro and other generic stuff that they normally stock.

The pod is not a power amp. It does not replace a head if you are using a cabinet. But it does replace the need for an amp. I plug the guitar into the pod. I plug the pod into the pa. *The days of me lugging gear around are over. Today, I carry a couple guitars, the pod, and a utility bag. *The days of me showing up at 2pm for a 10pm gig, so I can set up and run sound check are over. I need ten minutes to set up and sound check. *The days of me paying a sound guy while using my own speakers to hear myself are over. The sound guy puts my guitar through the floor monitors. ================================================================== Prior to my pod... I plugged the guitar into my fx. I plugged the fx into an amp. I plugged the amp into a speaker. The sound guy mic'd the speaker. The mic went to the pa. Two steps with the pod, 5 steps before the pod. Don't misunderstand. You can still use the pod with an amp. But I don't. A lot of us don't. Its no longer an fx signal going into a 'whatever you plug into'. Which will sound drastically different depending on what you plug in to. The pod simulates amps/cabs. So, its actually best to go straight to the pa, or to some form of a flat unresponsive amp that puts out true tone instead of adding its own tone. Unless you want to use the fx and not the simulators. That's a possibility too.
