  1. But its not more DSP. Its more available DSP. Meaning, that by reducing the amount of DSP some items use, it frees up DSP to be used by others. You're smart, so I know you understood that. But for those that have a harder time: You can only fit 100 M&M's in a jar. --- That can be thought of as your maximum DSP. The jar, when full, has the complete rainbow assortment of M&M's. --- we can think of that as lines of computer code. But brown isn't part of a real rainbow, so what you decide to do is remove the brown ones. So, you can now put more of the other colors in there before you hit your 100 M&M limit. The jar still only holds a maximum of 100. But because you cleared out the junk, it makes room for more of the fruity colors.
  2. In the old days, women like that would be called Spinsters. Because no man would want her.
  3. touching something to make the hum go away IS a ground loop issue. By touching it, you complete the circuit and act as a ground. The issue could be in any of the things you're using. It could also be.... Where is your circuit breaker? Turn it off. Anything that gets turned off in the house from that one switch... Those could be the issue. Did you ever use a toaster in the kitchen while drying your hair in the bathroom and the lights go out? Too much load on the breaker. Its the same kind of issue. It could be something in a different room. ---------------------------------------------------- BUT... If you in China, any hum going on could just as easily be the government spying on your.
  4. But what you really need to consider is... what are you using it for? I am a live performer - that also does studio work and plays at home and --- all things music. I was looking to replace my entire rig. Not add to my rig. Not replace parts of my rig. The entire thing. Is the Firehawk enough for you to use in front of 30,000 scream fans. With nothing more than a guitar between you and the PA. The 500X is. I don't know the answer to that because I haven't looked. It wasn't available when I was shopping. I am not going to be switching rigs anytime soon, so I don't need to know. But it demonstrates the point --- what are your plans for using the gear. And then, which one is more suited for that purpose. Your bedroom while people are sleeping or a professional sound stage performing in front of people.
  5. Here's where its a little Dictionary-esque. Updates are different than upgrades. This new thing that is coming out is an upgrade (with updates built in). We call it an update because of our lack of vernacular, but the truth is that it is an upgrade. To answer your question, NO, the company is under no obligation to offer any of us an upgrade. They don't even need to provide updates, but companies do that to keep on our good sides. Updates are primarily bug fixes and driver support. That's why companies typically provide them, to fix the errors that should have been fixed before it was released. Upgrades are features that were not in the original. Now, the difference between upgrades and updates is a actually a little upsetting to me. Because I have no interest in a 'master tone control'. But, in oder to get the bug fixes and other little tweaks that should be in an update, I have to download it all in one large upgrade package. So, basically, what I am saying is: If you knew what your HD300 was like five years ago when it was released, vs the amount of updates and upgrades that you have gotten between now and then,,,, Don't say they have poor customer service... get on on your knees and say thank you for making the unit 10 times the unit it was originally --- FOR FREE. Besides, you and little puny 300 --- if you wanted to play with the big boys, you would have gotten a 500. You can't handle all of this power with that little device.
  6. YES and YES Besides. Most of us have gotten rid of the factory patches to make room for our own. As long as the unit has sound on some of them, you know the unit works. Its not broken. From the factory, there is an entire setlist for non-guitars, and one for the Variax. Who needs that! Write over the ones you don't like.
  7. preset volume preset input any number of things
  8. It is a dangerous website. There are all kinds of viruses on there. Not to mention the poor setup which makes advertisers look like the part of the page you need to click on to download the file. But just because the website is a breeding ground for malicious intent does not mean that his files are bad. Its sort of like owning a gun. Owning does not make you a criminal. But there are criminals that own guns.
  9. As a soundman, than you should already know that volumes and surroundings change tone. So, really, there is no way to 'test' concert volume in your bedroom. And at the same time, there is no way to test an open air concert tone when you are rehearsing in an indoor facility. I go direct to pa. That is probably the best way to get a unified sound. Plus, its then up to the soundman to tweak - lol
  10. You either install via computer, the bundle that was posted for you, Or you install via computer, the firmware.
  11. 1. since it was new, did you do a firmware update? That very well could have wiped out all the patches depending on which option you chose. 2. If you use monkey to reinstall the current firmware, you can get your patches back. My suggestion is: Immediately after turning it on. Save the Bundle. And save all of presets individually. That way, you will never lose the originals again.
  12. try running your audio player through the cd input. That is not affected by the master volume or the volume of the patches. That will narrow down where the volume issue lies.
  13. what about the volume of the patches you use? You can set individual volumes in each patch.
  14. I have brackets. The pod fits in between them. I don't know how often you get gear. But my stuff is pretty long term, so I don't need to worry about shuffling stuff around.
  15. I need guitars that play well based on my preferences... which is why I buy every pre-'91 Jackson I find (in person). But, I am currently working on a country TV show, and working on a pop/rock movie. So, I can't always use neon pink skulls with pointy headstock. Electronic gear... I hadn't updated my last setup in 20 years. I replaced it with my HD500. I hope this lasts me 20 years.
  16. Quite frankly, if you didn't like the 500, you won't like the 500x. And my opinion is: why bother buying a modeler if you are going to use an amp anyhow. So, even though I am an ampless pod user. I'd have to say sell your whatever it was and buy a whatever it was, and just move on from the pods.
  17. For doing any style on the HD500, not just Reggae... What did you use before the L6? Obviously, if you weren't using a Marshall with the gain cranked to 10, you wouldn't do that on the L6. So, I always tell people that Customtone is a good place to start. You may find the perfect patch, but you also may just come up with ideas based on things you like and things you don't like to be able to create your own patch. But, more important to get started --- just use what you already use. You used a wah before you got the L6, so set up a wah on the L6. You used a flanger, so use a flanger. If it was in your signal chain before, put it there now. THAT is an easy way to get started.
  18. 1. Metal means different things to different people. Sabbath made music without all of this modern junk. But they are way different than Morbid Angel. Both of which, who are different than TSO. 2. Yes, there are 'metal' amps. Simply because designers have made them for the purpose of making 'metal'. Krankenstein doesn't say 'hear my smooth jazz', they say 'make the metal, krank it up'. They have boosted the 'distortion' capabilities to the point that no one but metal would want them. And sacrificing cleans and tone to do so. 3. We all have modelers. So why are we discussing amps? Isn't the whole point of buying a modeler so you don't need to own 50 different amps but you can still sound like you have 50 amps?
  19. Luckily, for me, I have never relied on an amp to give me tone. They only gave me volume. I've always been an fx guy. Even when it was a just a clean/distorted guitar, it was always fx. I guess that could be one of the reasons I can so easily give up my amps and use the pod straight to the pa?
  20. http://line6.com/support/topic/11831-hd-x-pro-instead-of-hd500/ For me, it boils down to: What are you looking for? I wanted a live rig. So I got the floor unit. And that is the only thing I use. You can see, if that is all I use, why a rack unit would be odd. One little 2 space rack sitting on the floor behind me at the back of the stage... and I'd still need a foot controller at the front. It also varies on what else you are using. A 12 space rack makes sense to keep rack stuff organized vs 10 racks and a floor unit that needs fed into the chain somewhere. And you want studio stuff. Which, I'd probably go for a rack. But you want some live work with it too...
  21. if you search Customtone for songs/bands that you would find in your setlist, 1. you may find something you can use 2. you can see what others did and can make your own based on what you liked and didn't like from others Also, if you go to this section http://line6.com/support/forum/12-share-your-settings/ you may find some help that has already been posted
  22. or--- you didn't the right search criteria in your box It doesn't matter what items you have registered. You can search and download any of them.
  23. 1. If I knew everything about the unit, I wouldn't be here learning. 2. I have never done this, so its only speculation. The easy answer is NO. But the real answer is --- YES, depending on how you have you patches set. Split the signal chain and run in stereo. Put your amp in the left (or right, if you prefer). Then your sound guy can run left to the recorder and the right to the speakers.
  24. what do you mean 'trying to open'? That could mean any number of things. I use the 'drag and drop' method. Putting the patches at the exact slot location I want them at.
  25. Its always a good idea to have your patches saved to a computer anyhow... But yes, save what you want as your default into a patch. Then you can load it into all of the patch slots as needed... you could even, once all slots are full, save the setlist so you can install it 64 times in one swoop. Here's an addition question for people: Can he use the file converter to change all of the amps in his old patches?
