  1. L6 is now owned by another company. I expect a lot of money grabs from here on out. I am not planning on buying gear until this craps out on me, which should be another 20 years like my last set up. But, again, I will throw out the disclaimer that I am a 'brand K' dealer. So it is natural that I have some disdain for the 'brand Y'.
  2. 1. Don't get too attached. Updates roll out soon. That means you'll lose all unsaved patches and have a brand new pod again. 2. My suggestion is save individual patches, not just bundles. You will always have a copy of the original, but it also allows you to reorder them based on the gig's setlist.
  3. By the time you stand on stage, it is really too late to tweak your patches. That should have been done long ago. So, assuming that your patches are already tweaked, the question is still... Where should he set his volume for live playing. The mp3 player will come out of the same PA system, so why is adjusting your master volume to match the same level a bad thing? Do you have a better solution?
  4. I have mutliple tvs in multiple homes. Main viewing tv in each location is always a big screen. So, no, its not a CRT. But I am not going to throw out a perfectly working CRT when I could just put it in a bedroom or kitchen where a 13-32" screen is more than satisfactory. Usually, how I work it is --- when something breaks and needs replaced, I will shuffle all current inventory around. So, in theory, if space permits, I end up with a new big screen as my main viewing tv, and my current main tv in a bedroom, the bedroom in the kitchen, and so on and so forth. Obviously, I don't need a 42" in the bathroom. So that rules out the possibility of shifting the screens under all circumstances. lol
  5. Of course its a 'value'. Its a free feature that was not included with the original product. You can't do better than that.. BUT: For me, personally, I have no usage for a Master EQ. I let the soundman do that sort of stuff. So, even though it can be bypassed, depending on what other little tweaks are included with the firmware, I may not even bother downloading it. But I am just one guy, and I have different needs than you may have.
  6. TV 1. I use TV more like a radio. Its on and I hear the stories. But there are very few shows that get me to watch. 2. I hate digital television signals. First, because of the time it takes to load a station when you change the channel. Scrolling takes forever. But also because, when a signal goes bad, you usually lose everything. You used to be able to get a fuzzy view when there was a problem. Now, you get nothing. The on-screen channel menus and things like that are nice. But if I just wanted to flip back and forth, its a drag. 3. I still use VHS (in addition to other mediums). 4. New tv technology (plasma, lcd, etc) does not last as long as CRT. I have 30 year old CRT's that have never been a problem. Yet, I've replaced many Plasma and LCD televisions and computer monitors.
  7. WHAT IS IT? Think about your Master Volume. That is what the Master EQ is. >>> I am calling it Master EQ from now on, its easier for some to understand. It is separate from all of the other eq's. It is the MASTER. WHERE IS IT? Right now, it is nowhere. It has not been released yet. If I understood it correctly (I didn't pay too much attention to this part), it will be adjusted using the physical 'amp' knobs. **see the correct place a couple posts down. WHAT CHANGES TO ANY TONE? No changes to your tone, other than -- HELLO, ITS AN EQ. But you can bypass it when not needed. The best usage for it is for 'room shaping'. That way, when you are in a different room, which will have different acoustics, you can adjust your tone without changing your patches. Much like a master volume, you can adjust how loud you need to be given a particular situation. You can adjust your EQ. I don't like how Charlie said that it is there for all of your patches. He is right, but his wording may confuse people. It has nothing to do with your patches.
  8. Ultimately, it doesn't matter where you have the volume set. But, I always say: 2. the mp3 input is not affected by the volume knob. if you hook up a player, you can set your volume by matching the audio.
  9. And a violin test would be acoustic vs acoustic. Its a little different between electric vs electric because its not the wood making the noise, its an amp that was powered by a pickup.
  10. But PA systems are a lot cleaner now too. You can get loud, but clear sounds out of them. So, an audience hears a lot more 'tone' than they used to at that level. Plus, I think a big difference between then and now is the fact that --- Times have changed. Most of the bar bands that play your standard rock, country, or metal will make a choice of one amp. A clean sound and a dirty sound. Yet some of the more modern rock uses a lot of chugga chugga type of sounds, and echos and harmonies. So they need more access to sounds. But your typical top 40/pop band. I mean, wow, what a selection they have. One minute you are doing disco type stuff (Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger), and the next you are doing a heavy metal version of Lady Gaga, which will be followed by the Use Your Love (brought back by Katy Perry). Bang Bang Bang, 1 2 3, all songs needing something different one right after another. Its not like using the same distorted sound to play both Poison and KISS. You can get away with that. But you can't get away with the same sound for that other stuff.
  11. That is something I often bring up about modern music, and the debate over record vs cd. It's not just the fact that you are listening on an mp3 vs vinyl. Its the fact that even at the studio level, things get computerized. Every beat is synchronized/quantized. Every note is precisely in tune. Every volume meticulously leveled. Even guys here, you can read their comments. They play a straight signal to record, and then decide which fake amp and fx sounds best later.
  12. because some of the 'global' settings aren't global, I like calling the Global EQ a Master EQ. Much like the Master Volume. People seem to understand how it works better that way. Master EQ.
  13. That's a sad fact of life. Changing external amps will make your perfectly tweaked patch into a big garbled mess. So will changing the volume. So will changing the room you are in (bedroom to basement to concert hall to different concert hall). You know what else... using your gear and then using a mic to get it to the pa, will again, make it sound different. Its really a trial and error situation. Just learn to tweak -- you can also save your patches. So, you may have 3 different versions of the same patch. One for each external amp. My basic advice to everyone is this: 1. Continue using your old gear live/rehearsal until you have practiced with your new gear at home enough to be able to say "I am ready to add this to my live rig". 2. If you are using an external amp, do not bother using the internal amps. A Marshall model will never sound like a Marshall when its coming out of a Fender. 3. Skip the amp, go direct to PA. 4. Headphones are a godsend.
  14. Drop D tunings has nothing to do with the Key of D minor.
  15. My post was actually regarding the ones who's pipes would not be able to be moved. But there are all sorts of mods being done depending on the modder, the setup, and the bank account... I've seen each external button being wired to digitally produce the same sound. I've seen each pipe being wired to produce the same sound. From the outside, you would never know. Its all inside. Sound being produced digitally instead of mechanically, whether it comes out of the pipes or not. Sort of how L6 has removed the tubes but still sounds like tubes.
  16. Unfortunately, L6 is very noisy. They, on purpose, add in the 60hz hum for 'realism'. Its probably my only complaint about the units.
  17. silly question... have you adjusted the noise gate? Does turning the gate up cut the hum?
  18. Obviously, with a screen name like PianoGuyY, I am somehow connected with they 'keys' in some way. Do you know what is big business right now? Going to churches and other concert halls that have these big huge pipe organs. And I am talking the BIG ones, the ones that are built into the walls and would never be able to be moved. People are ripping out all of the guts, and replacing them with microchips. Would you ever know that it was a digital sample if you weren't told?
  19. The only MAJOR free feature. There's always other little tweaks and enhancements. But the main selling point is the GEQ - which is something I don't even want. So I may not even update.
  20. In the studio, they usually want you dry so they can mix in all of the fx themselves. Your reverb needs to match all of the other reverbs. Your echo can't over power the other echo. Etc
  21. I wanted it to happen. I didn't know the term modeler at the time. Hell, Windows 95 didn't even exist yet. so I am sure that modeling didn't either. But I always wanted to plug direct into the PA. Skip the need for an amp altogether. I just never found a good sound from it. I have it now. Sometimes I feel like George Lucas during the original Star Wars movies. I wanted to do certain things, but the technology wasn't available. So I did the best I could with the limitations of the time.
  22. Your post wasn't even there when I started writing. I got a pop up that said "new replies, click to display". So I had no clue what you wrote until after I posted -- since I didn't click it. No biggie.
  23. the first question is: is it the lcd or is it the cover, or is it both? I've never replaced anything on my pod. But I can tell you that replacing the screens on other devices is not cheap --- its mostly labor. Especially if you are using a manufacturer approved repair guy. But, just like anything else in life. Thanks to the internet, you can buy a $10 Chinese knockoff part and do the work yourself with a video you found on YouTube. Or you can pay to have a good, fully functional part replaced by a professional that has spent 30 years mastering his craft.
  24. 1. Decent does not equal great. 2. If its close enough, tweak it so that it does cut it. Its either perfect, or a starting point to be made perfect. 3. I said - I don't know what else you're looking for. That means the difference between my Soloist and his Sustainor. 4. I wasn't referring to your post, or else I would have quoted you. Your opinion of them not cutting was stated.
