Just had to make sure. I have seen some really lost individuals, and then our answers don't make sense because they asked the wrong stuff ---- When you update the firmware, you have a choice of keeping your patches or not. Obviously, you should select the other option.

Potential new member of the POD family with some questions
pianoguyy replied to Fenderflame28's topic in POD HD
Assuming you have the patch set up correctly ----- you need to insert a "dummy" plug into the right 1/4. XLR is always left or right, never both. But the 1/4 will sum to mono if you only use one jack. The dummy plug will "trick" the pod into thinking you have two amps hooked up, one left and one right. -
That depends on what you mean by "Variax patches" and "variax setlist". As well as how you updated your software.

The proper answer is NO (as stated above). BUT, that assumes you are using the proper definition of "patch". I only bring this up because another fella was saying "patch" but was not meaning "patch". In his case, yes, he could use all 8 for patch selection. But also in his case, he did not mean to use the word patch.

The other thing to consider is --- if you don't like what you sound like (fire the sound guy) and you make adjustments to your sound, the sound guy is going to counter-adjust the final result to make it sound like what he wants and you are right back where you started.
-
your thought process is flawed from the very beginning. The HD500 and HD500x are the same unit. There was a supply issue with the processor, so they started using a different one. There is nothing new and exciting about the X. In fact, we still consider it a 7 year old product --- which is when the 500 came out. What you are trying to do, because the Hx and HD units are so different, would be the equivalent of taking a computer program designed to run on OS X Snow Leopard and expecting it to work on Windows 95.
-
If you want it for FOH, let the FOH guy handle it. That is what he gets paid for. But, to answer the question --- There is no such thing as "common" or "appropriate" settings. You walk into a room and you adjust based on what the room is telling you needs adjusted.

right, but 1-8 isn't presets. it is the ability to turn blocks on or off within one preset. Which, could just be a terminology difference.
-
well, technically, you only have one preset "loaded". But, I see what you are talking about --- Yes - four. As far as the top row goes, each button is not limited to one. So really, you can have everything attached to one and still have 3 available if you choose.

Was this a used item?

I'd say.... Go listen to The Music of Nashville Season 2, 3, and 4. If you can tell me which parts are done with the HD500... Then I will say that your ears are good enough to need more/better than the HD500 can do.

And I am going to laugh when you try stomping on the thing in your mom's basement and you end up breaking your $500 unit trying to do the same stage showboating a millionaire does with a $30 pedal that he gets for free. Fyi, Vai didn't have that spring loaded pedal when he was recording it.

which is why, in my post, I emphasized that I run direct. But I think the point went over his head.

Using a device with a $500 MSRP.... I have everything that I have ever had during my 30+ year career -- AND MORE. $100,000 worth of gear, replaced by a $500 floorboard. Because I choose to run direct to the PA instead of using an amp, the one thing I am missing is a Talk Box, and that is because there is no amp/cab involved, which means no ability to power the device. However, they now sell a self-powered Talk Box, which means if I actually needed one, I could buy one and use it with my Pod. But I gained a Vocoder, which I had on keys, but not for guitar. Talk Box vs Vocoder - I can deal with it. There are two things I am feeling let down on when using the Pod vs my old rig, and they were not improved upon in the Helix. 1. the tuner. While the guitar tuner in the Pod is accurate, in my old rig, I had a much more high end tuner. In fact, I paid $400 for my tuner. So, really, I can't expect a $500 device to include a tuner like that. But, I can still use it, it is just not part of the "one box" replacement. 2. I had an old Pitch Shift/Delay pedal, that allowed me to do some crazy sound effects. I cannot do it with the Pod. Partially because the way digital works in segments instead of the continual motion of analog. But, like all of the above issues, I could use it in the chain if I really wanted - it just is not built in. So, I ask you... What do you do with your music that makes you think you may need a Helix? A touch screen doesn't make it sound any better. Having 7 inputs doesn't make it sound any better if you are a 1 or 2 input user.

NO. Master Volume is the MASTER volume. It reflects overall volume of the unit, not patch volume. Think of it like watching TV. assuming you do not have volume leveling ~~~ You set your volume control. You watch a show. All is well. But then a commercial comes on and "holly crap, turn that down!", because the individual commercial volume is louder than the show volume even though you did not change the volume.
-
And, no, it is not the fault of L6. It is a fault of how computers operate. The same happens when I use HDMI to broadcast my pc onto my tv.
-
When you plug an audio device into the computer, the computer volume defaults to 100. Step one is --- turn the computer volume down to where you normally have it.

Horrible noise when my POD HD 500X is connected to my computer.
pianoguyy replied to matonanjin's topic in POD HD
Buzz? You mean, like a ground loop? Plug the amp into a different outlet. -
DSP is like RAM. It is an available amount of memory to run a task. But, unlike RAM, when you run our of DSP, it doesn't get "augmented" by the harddrive. When you are out of DSP, that's it. And, as said before, you gain nothing by "deleting" a patch. In fact, it is a 0 sum gain. The HD500 saves a file with x-amount of slots. It doesn't change file size if that slot is filled with delay, or distortion, or it could even be filled with "available". It is much like a house --- it takes up 4500sq ft regardless of whether or not there are walls and room and furniture inside.

New POD HD500x owner. Question re. patch downloads
pianoguyy replied to telecustom88's topic in POD HD
HA, I am quoting myself. To clarify, I don't mean that you get to select where to put it. I meant, what you have selected prior to using the dropdown box, is where things will get installed. So, if you are on 1a, when you add a patch, that is where it will go. If you are on 16d, that is where it will go. You need to select where it is going first. Then you can use the drop down box -
The L6 download page (not monkey) has all versions available. But, I want to correct/amend some of the information above based on another post I just responded to. You only need to rename the file extensions if you are using the drop down menu at the top. If you are doing the drag-and-drop method, 500 files will go right into the 500x. *when taking them out of the 500x, the files will be 500x formats - essentially creating duplicate files for you.

New POD HD500x owner. Question re. patch downloads
pianoguyy replied to telecustom88's topic in POD HD
My first question is - did you click the send or receive buttons? If not, then the patch changes shouldn't have been made permanent. Next up is your question - Yes, patches overwrite patches. But they don't automatically go "at the top". Based on the information given, I am going to assume that you did File/Open. In this instance, the patch will be installed on the position that you have selected. You don't want to use the File/Open method. In the future, you want to drag-and-drop. Even that has some nuances, but it is easier to control. -
Help Setting up new rig Firehawk FX or POD HD500X?
pianoguyy replied to rayprinsen's topic in Line 6 Lounge
question 1 - do you require the use of bluetooth, tablet, or pc question 1a - if you don't require any, which do you prefer to use question 2 - are you playing live, studio, or both - or possibly even just your mother's basement question 3 - how much of a tweaker are you -
You may not be a beginner, but you are - in a way. Because it is new gear. Not only is it new gear, it is a new "entire rig". In the olden days, you bought one piece, And you tried it in different ways - settings, positions, etc. You crafted that one piece to work with all of the other pieces. Then a year later, repeated the process with another new piece. But, in the case of the Pod, you have just replaced everything you own with 10 times more stuff than you previously owned.
