PROCEDURE FOR ASSIGNING MULTIPLE BLOCKS TO A FOOTSWITCH
Digital_Igloo replied to HonestOpinion's topic in Helix
Page 32 of the Helix Owner's Manual: It's also worth noting that a footswitch can have non-block items assigned as well (up to eight items total). Pressing a single switch could do all of the following: Turn a Delay block on Turn an FX Loop off Turn one Distortion block off Turn another Distortion block on Boost an amp block's gain by 1.2dB Drop the amp's block's treble by 2.3 Switch the Split block > A/B's Route To parameter from Path A to Path B (acting as a path switcher) Switch the channel on a connected EVH amp via MIDI In this case, repeatedly touching the footswitch would cycle through all eight assignments: Selects/highlights the Delay block Selects/highlights the FX Loop block Selects/highlights the first Distortion block Selects/highlights the second Distortion block Jumps to the Controller Assign page for amp gain, so you can tweak its min and max values Jumps to the Controller Assign page for amp treble, so you can tweak its min and max values Jumps to the Controller Assign page for Split > A/B Route To, so you can tweak its min and max values Jumps to the Command Center page for EVH control, so you can tweak the MIDI values Touch one last time to jump back to the home screen and select/highlight the Delay block Yes, Helix will remember which of the (up to) eight items is "in focus" when saving your preset, and the switch LED's color and dim/bright state will reflect this.- 15 replies

Unfortunately, Bluetooth is waaaaaayyy too slow to sync Helix presets (which can be dozens of times larger than a Firehawk or AMPLIFi preset, plus there are 1,024 of 'em) and Wifi isn't an option on the road or at many venues. Plus, the typical Helix customer would more likely be in a studio, rehearsal space, or tour van than a living room, bedroom, or office. And USB audio/reamping and DAW control are two of the big plusses of Helix's Command Center. Bluetooth technology has a way to go before it can fully compete with USB-tethered Macs, PCs, and netbooks/tablets.

The DT's cab isn't full range—its, well, a cab, so you'll generally get better results bypassing Helix's cab modeling entirely. Trust your ears, but I've yet to hear a cab into another cab that doesn't sound weird.

Best way to switch from a clean sound to lead tone with one footswitch
Digital_Igloo replied to billbassler's topic in Helix
Start with 8 TEMPLATES > 02C TwoTones A-B. It has exactly what you're asking for set up and ready to go. In stomp footswitch mode, FS8 ("TONE A-TONE B") toggles between two discrete tones, each with its own Amp and Cab. You even get spillover delay and reverb. -
You can select Loop 1, 2, 3 and 4 separately if you choose from the Mono subcategory.

What is the typical software release cycle for Helix?
Digital_Igloo replied to jshimkoski's topic in Helix
Helix was released September 28, 2015 with FW 1.00.0. FW 1.01.2—October 2, 2015 FW 1.02.2—October 14, 2015 FW 1.03.0—October 30, 2015 FW 1.04.1—November 23, 2015 FW 1.04.2—December 19, 2015 FW 1.04.3—December 19, 2015 FW 1.06.0—January 26, 2016 So... seven updates across three and a half months is a rather low number? I quit. -

We don't even have a schedule, aside from trying to get 1.06 out by the first day of NAMM (which didn't happen). Well, Helix has already had seven updates, so... -

Members of Team Helix still gig for a living—it's just that since music-as-a-profession has been largely marginalized (piracy, minuscule streaming payouts, spacebar DJs as rock stars, etc.), we all need day jobs as well. A bunch of well-known bands still have to work between tours and recording. But yes, MIDI in and out on Helix was never in question. :)

FR for SD Memory Card extender box with WI-FI and (Trio+ features?)
Digital_Igloo replied to d0stenning's topic in Helix
As cool as Trio is (and it is cool), if you have an iPhone, Apple's new Music Memos app works incredibly well. Connect via USB to Helix and you're golden. -
1. Make sure the Input block's gate isn't on. 2. Place the Arbitrator Fuzz the first thing in the chain and set Global Settings > Ins/Outs > Guitar In Impedance to "Auto." The Fuzz Face had a much lower impedance than most other pedals, and you want it loading your guitar in the same way.

Wait. This isn't for Helix floor? No; this update is ONLY FOR HELIX RACK. There are no user-facing differences between Helix floor FW 1.06.0 and Helix Rack FW 1.06.2. Wait. Does this mean that Helix Rack and Helix Control are about to ship? Yes, any day now. Helix Rack Firmware v1.06.2 Release Notes IMPORTANT! If Helix Control is connected to Helix Rack, turn Helix Control’s power switch OFF before proceeding! Helix v1.06.2 is a ï¬rmware update that includes new models, features, ï¬xes, stability improvements, and optimizations. It is highly recommended that all Helix Rack users perform this update! It is also recommended that you back up your current presets by using the latest Helix application to create a preset bundle, allowing you to install new presets as part of the update process. The easiest way to perform the update process is by installing the latest version of Line 6 Updater. Once you've connected Helix to your computer via its USB port (hubs are not supported), Line 6 Updater will recognize the unit and take you through the update process. Both the Helix application and Line 6 Updater may be downloaded here: http://line6.com/software/ After Helix Rack has been updated, turn on Helix Rack, and the Inspector Header will ask if you want to also update Helix Control. Press Knob 6 (OK) to proceed. New Amp Models • Matchstick Ch1, based on* Channel 1 of the MatchlessTM DC30 • Matchstick Ch2, based on* Channel 2 of the MatchlessTM DC30 • Matchstick Jump, based on* jumping Channels 1 and 2 of the MatchlessTM DC30 New Effects Models • Distortion > Teemah! (Mono, Stereo), based on* the Paul Cochrane Timmy® Overdrive • Distortion > KWB (Mono, Stereo), based on* the Benadrian Kowloon Walled Bunny Distortion • Distortion > Bitcrusher (Mono, Stereo) • Modulation > Dynamix Flanger (Mono, Stereo) • Modulation > Deluxe Phaser (Mono, Stereo) • Modulation > Tremolo (Mono) and Tremolo/Autopan (Stereo), based on* the BOSS® PN-2 • Pitch/Synth > Simple Pitch (Mono, Stereo) • Pitch/Synth > Dual Pitch (Mono, Stereo) • Filter > Autoï¬lter (Mono, Stereo) * All product names are trademarks of their respective owners, which are in no way associated or afï¬liated with Line 6. New Features • Swap Footswitch Assignments—This feature makes organizing Stomp footswitch mode a lot easier, especially when footswitches have multiple-assigned items or custom labels/ LED ring colors. Touch and hold (but don’t press) any two stomp mode footswitches for one second. A dialog box appears, asking if you want to swap all assignments. Press Knob 6 (OK) • When touch-holding a footswitch to invoke Quick Footswitch Assign (or touch holding two footswitches to swap their assignments), the dialog panel automatically closes after four seconds Bug Fixes • In rare cases, assigning a parameter to a footswitch may briefly display the parameter’s value above Knob 1 (Parameter) on the Controller Assign page —FIXED • After returning to a preset while the looper is active, the Looper block and/or half-speed footswitch’s LED may not properly reflect its state(s) —FIXED • In some cases, a Command Center > CC Toggle footswitch’s LED may not properly reflect its state —FIXED • Helix may fail to respond when receiving a huge string of MIDI PC messages while on the Setlist view —FIXED • After customizing the name of an auto-assigned EXP 1 block (Wah or Pitch Wham), the Volume Pedal may become unassigned —FIXED • General stability improvements • Other minor bug ï¬xes and optimizations Other Improvements • When selecting banks by pressing FS1 (BANK UP) or FS7 (BANK DOWN), FS6 now appears as CANCEL, letting you dismiss bank queue without changing footswitch modes • Expression Pedal 2 and 3 can now adjust values in Pedal Edit mode • Factory presets leveled • Additional improvements made to the factory preset bundle Resetting Helix Globals / Loading the Newest Factory Presets IMPORTANT! This procedure will completely overwrite all existing presets and setlists, as well as clear all user IRs and reset all global settings! Back up your presets and IRs before proceeding! Turn off Helix. While holding footswitches 9 and 10 (middle two switches on the bottom row), turn on Helix. Wait for the message “Will reset Globals and restore stock Presets, Setlists and IRs…†to appear and let go. Known Issues • Minor pops and clicks may be present when Helix is streaming audio from a Mac® running OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) • Minor pops and clicks may be present when Helix is streaming audio from an iOS® device running iOS 9.1 or 9.2 with Apple® Camera Kit • Importing a Helix bundle while streaming audio over USB may cause the Helix application to disconnect

I consider myself lucky. I'm old enough to have been forced to deal with and learn how to use real mixers, real compressors, real effects sends and returns with real rackmount effects processors, real samplers, real MIDI interfaces with SMPTE and MTC sync... I feel that knowledge has given me a leg up in production, mixing, and engineering. But I'm young enough to have never had to deal with tape-based recording. Avoided the whole analog tape and ADAT days and jumped straight into an Akai DR4d (circa-'95). Only 16 minutes of 4-track recording, but it could edit and loop!

Confused about assigning multiple blocks to a footswitch
Digital_Igloo replied to siremoon's topic in Helix
It's simpler than that: Assign up to 8 blocks to the same footswitch. Doesn't matter whether they're enabled or bypassed when you assign them. If you want some blocks to be enabled, and some bypassed, repeatedly touch the switch until you find one in the wrong state and press the BYPASS button. OPTIONAL—Touch the footswitch repeatedly until the block you want visible is selected and then save the preset. The preset will recall with that block highlighted, regardless of whether it's enabled or bypassed. -
Yep. From that thread: The reason something like a Zoom G3 can switch super fast is because it's running a relatively simple fixed signal flow with relatively tiny models with relatively few parameters. It's kind of like asking: "Why does it take four days for The Anaheim Convention Center to get everyone's NAMM booths out and swapped for the next convention when it took my buddy and I an afternoon to swap out his entertainment center?" The amount of data that Helix needs to remove and then add when switching patches is potentially gargantuan—upwards of a thousand values or more. Regardless, there are always things we can do to improve things. Helix is far from baked. Also, don't forget about 8 TEMPLATES > 02C TwoTones A-B that lets you instantly switch between two tones with zero gap and spillover delay+reverb, 8 TEMPLATES > 02D TwoTones Blend that lets you manually crossfade between two tones with the expression pedal, or 8 TEMPLATES > 03D 4 Tone Switcher that lets you turn four completely discrete serial tones on and off with zero gap.

Correct. If we added Global EQ to more output pairs, not only would people have less DSP with which to create their presets, but existing presets right at the DSP limit may break.
-
Yes, the 9.5" depth is measured from the very front of the handles to the tip of the wordclock BNC connector. If space is a premium, the handles can be removed with a phillips screwdriver. You'd save an additional 1.3" or so.
-
Same reason. More users would prefer that DSP be used for an additional EQ > Parametric block (or equivalent model) in their signal flow.
-
Global EQ is designed for compensating for the myriad environments in which you might play. As every DAW on the planet has stock EQ plugins that are likely more flexible than Helix's Global EQ, it made little sense to waste precious DSP on something largely unnecessary. Helix's routing dictates that each pair of outputs requires its own Global EQ block—currently we have one for the 1/4" outputs and another for the XLRs, and the Global EQ page controls them both simultaneously. That's how you can pick which one has Global EQ applied. Basically, the more pairs of outputs that monitor Global EQ, the fewer simultaneous blocks you'd be able to run.

Since we have to translate manuals into over twenty languages now (which takes a month at least, means I'm not designing new features, and costs us many thousands of dollars), the current plan is to only update when necessary. Like a major point release (2.0) or something. In the meantime, any new major features not in a major point release will likely find their way into blog posts, videos, and/or KB articles.

To create an ABY switch, do this: On a parallel path, select the Split block and turn the joystick to select A/B. Press and hold Knob 1 (Route To), press Knob 6 (Learn Controller), and then press the desired stomp mode footswitch. Let's say you picked FS2. Press HOME to exit. Touch and hold the desired stomp mode footswitch for Y functionality and press Knob 6 (OK) to assign it. Let's say you picked FS3. FS2+FS3 is now your ABY switch; FS2 toggles between Paths A and B and FS3 turns the A/B Split block off, which then acts like a Y switch (signal is split evenly to Paths A and B ).

Firehawk 1500 is a stereo system and a mono system. If you don't utilize the Guitar In, the middle mono horn isn't used. So... Rear-panel combi jacks > Firehawk 1500 Stereo System (2x coax speakers + 12" for sub) Guitar In > Firehawk 1500 Mono System (12" speaker + horn with all modeling) Both Rear-panel combi jacks and Guitar In > Wet-Dry-Wet system (all six speakers)
