Agree with Rd2k on using midi to make life easier. I used to manage a library of song patches in one bank and drag and drop to dated set list banks - managing it that way is doable but remembering to only tweak your base library is a disipline I was poor at. I now use Midi via an android device and Bandhelper as the app. Heaps easier.

Do all and any updates prior to a paid session, and test thoroughly before the session. As to why your Helix is no longer talking to your Windows machine: Have there been any windows updates applied to your machine - Windows is great at knowcking out drivers during updates? Have you tried upating to the latest version of HX Edit and all drivers? Did you update HX Edit before updating the Helix firmware? Have you tried a different USB cable and/or USB output on your Windows machine? If all of the above have been done, try a factory reset

Can I ask why you put the topic/subject as JDub? Its not so helpful in knowing if there's anything of intrest in the post - spesh when you sign-off as JDub.

Using a Variax I tend to have Accoustic IRs first, helping 'tune' the modelled accoustic, then using effects on it so they're affectng the whole accoustic model. Using your use case, the dfference would be accoustic sim then IRs. For what its worth I tend to use a mix of the IRs so theres a blend of original modelled tone, plus the IR affected.

Thanks rd2rk - much apreciated. I'd love to get an explanation of what's happening as it is a bit counter intuitive from my perspective - but I suspect that's a L6 engineering question. That said I am preferring reducing the defeat on the speaker models and leaving the digital output block at zero db ensuring over pushing the gain at the output block. Setting the models to -8 db (rather than -15) is providing sufficient signal (according to the indicator), balanced volume across presets, stopping 'popping' when swapping between speaker models and FRFR in a patch, and providing reasonable gain into my desk from the line out.

Seriously stop shouting - I can read and I understand completely what you're saying. It doesn't align with the testing I've done. Your caps don't add any clarity. It may not change the helix output - but it changes the behaviour of the clip indicator LED, and you completely shat on the suggestion that it had anything to do with changes to the powercab settings.
-
So its changing the Helix output? As far as I can tell this is a parameter within the PC+ that the Helix is controlling. I'm not asking to be difficult. I'd genuinely like to know as understanding this architecture is important to me as it hepls me calibrate my set-up and improve my workflow. Relevant pics below.

I've just retested it changing the setting for Speaker Level [1] for the PC+ using HX Edit and can easily push the light into the red by removing the amount of defeat for just that setting. No other changes. Boosting the Flat level of FRFR also changes the LED behaviour independent of any other settings Do those settings change the Helix Output level or the within Cab processing?
-
Agree, and it can depend onsettings in the PowerCab, such as the DB settings for speaker models. Finding a way of monitoring this without sitting on top of the PC+ was somethign I played with this weekend. In the end I took the analog send from the PC+ and calibrated the meters on my desk so I know when they hit the red so is the PC+. Took a bit of time to adjust the input trim to and understand the bits that impacted but should be worth it. As an observation, the XLR outputs direct from the Helix are a lot hotter than the L6 link to PC+ to XLR route even when the PC+ is peaking. I found myself bumping the speaker models from -15db to -8 db, and adjusting the desk trim from 0db to +8db. I'm pretty sure the FRFR setting was considerably hotter (but can't recall right now). Other peoples observations welcome.

Checks date. Nope still only Feb - 34 days to go

Yes in 2017. Was using the HD500x for a few years, constatntly tweaking patches and never happy. Walked into a music store and tried a Helix then saved for 6 months to get one - the diference was phenominal. Since then paired the Helix with Variax and PowerCabs (or DT25s) and very happy. Even though I had to start from scratch making patches, what I'd learnt was easily applied.

The integration between Helix and DT amps is nowhere near as tight as the HD series - which has positives and negatives. Selection of a Helix amp model will not change the topology of the DT amp All Topology changes are made in the settings plhil_m shows Pre-amp integration doesn't exist as far as I'm aware - eg the change the amp knobs and the model changes bit You can choose to use the Helix of or the DT for Pre-amp - I don't know how you change and store pre-amp settings as I use full amp models on the Helix and then the DT power stage Whether you use pre-amps or amps on the Helix is your choice - personally I find the full amp model works better for me, plus I take a split for digital pre-cab so I can still send a "full model" direct to XLRs - the idea of trying to monitor the post amp XLRs and tune settings for FoH that way is just more complexity than I want, and I found the XLR ourput from the amp is tied to the master volume (not super helpful to use as a line source) You can start with the topology settings on the amp inserts (if you still have that) as a guide for different styles of amps - but you'll likely find your own preferances by playing about a bit - in the end its waht sounds good to you Expect to do a fair bit of level balancing between topologys and Helix models and patches I've found myself preferring the DT over the powercab at different times and not sure where I'll land, so am now making sure I have the digital out's set-up for each. The biggest benefitsI've found of using the powercabs are weight, and the ability to swap to FRFR for acoustic models (or other as required) and choose to use a speaker model where required. Even within a patch using snapshots. I'm begining to think I'll get best bang for my buck tuning Powercab set-ups over the DT.

This is likley your problem - you are coverting anaolg (guitar) to digital in the Helix, digitl to analog out of the Helix, anaolg to digital with the sound card and digital to analog to your headphones. Each step introduces some delay. You need to connect your headphones direct to the Helix to test if there really is a problem with the Helix. As Ilya-V suggested. If you want to record with the Helix you should use the USB outs so you're sending digital to digital.

Hi Very similar set-up. Helix > X18 (not rack) > StudioOne with digital split to DT25s Helix > XLRs Line out > no volume control Helix > digital > no volume control X18 trim zero DB DT25 master as volume control for in the room I manage gain staging through each patch and use either the output stage or a volume block to adjust final gain to the mixer or DT25 for each patch. Signal to the X18 monitored through its metering and a LUF meter in Studio one. Relative perceived volume through monitors. As the digital split is pre cab and compressor blocks the DT25 split also has an EQ block and volume to adjust perceived volume in the room which varies with DT25 power amp settings. Dgital signal level is monitored within the Helix itself to ensure no clipping (never been an issue). Changing the master volume can change perceived relative volumes from the DT25 so I check at stage levels.

The current models all come with the same sounds and tunings, and all can be cutomised to suit your needs. And yes the standard plays like a strat and, for me, very nicely. The artifacts mentioned by Hey_Joe are what I was referring to. The warble can be tamed using somethig to dampen the strings between the nut and tuning machines (I use furry hair elastics - the shame), and the plink I tame by running into accoustic IRs (as a blend) - I've had people get very confused about the 'great accoustic sound' coming from my 'strat'. I'd love to see a new generation of Variaxes :)
-
No latency that I can tell Tuning is amazing but not entirely free of artifacts depending on what you're doing Modelled guitars are good as substitues but require 'tuning' to fit your need and theres lots of 'model packs' about put together by some very knowledgeable people https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=138.0 My use case is largely live - Standard >> Helix >> PC+ or DT25 I chage tuning and guitar models between and within songs using snapshopts For live my rig went from 3-5 guitars, 2 x heads, 2+ x cabs, pedal board, DIs for accoustic to 2 x variax standards (one spare), Helix and 2 x PC+ or DT 25 Both standards have been plecked, bone buts put on, and locking trimmng tuners put on - very happy with the feel as a lng term fender player - had a couple of JTV 59s I couldn't love due to feel not working for me Have also used for recording projects and not told people what the guitar used is and never had tone or tuning questioned - including dobro and accoustic models in open tunings and slide Yes - I'm a fan.

How about using a send for the Director mic signal and using the momentary switch to route the vocal path 100% to that send and the rest of the time allowing 100% to pass through? You won't be able to hear the Director send through headphones at home, but does that matter?

Noting that I too am an old bugger who hates the weight of tube amps, but yes enjoys their sound. Have you tried a PowerCab using the speaker sim functionality - that 'might' work for you as a combined SS amp and 'in the room' speaker combo that is light weight, and conects digitally to the Helix. Full disclosure - I mix and match between PC+ in FRFR and DT25s depending on circumstances. My band has a preference for the DTs and I've not fully worked through the Speaker sim approach with the PC+.
-
No, using the XLR makes no sense as it would not set the PC+ to the right cab setting. Do know how to use the modelled speakers in the PC+ and the difference between the L6 link and an XLR? I ask as your replies in this and other posts suggest limited experience with guitars and amps in general. But I may be wrong. With that in mind - do you have gear you're happy with the tone? A tube amp/cab or similar? The below suggests to me you should stick with that rather than persisting with trying to tone match YouTube videos with the Helix and PC+. In previous posts you mention being a newbie, and then seem to show a lack of experience with guitars. If this is genuinely the case then gear alone will not get you the tone you want to hear. Much of tone is down to you, your technique and how well you can use the gear you have. Your conclusion that your guitar is at fault may be erroneous.

I pulled down his patches from the links under the video. They are designed to be used with L6 Link and do run hot to the PowerCab. They will set the cab to the right speaker sim so long as you have set the powercab to Remote: Preset (not Global). (you can see this where he's playing wiht the patches eg about 16 minute mark) Running from the XLR outs will not set this! They're not my cup of tea, but they sure aren't thin and punchless and get a lot bigger as you increase PC volume, with a real leap in perceived grunt from about 2 o'clock to 3 o'clock for me - and yes its loud. The guitar I used was a variax so certainly not super hot on the input side.
-
Something to consider about how thin or otherwise you patches might sound to you is how loud you're running your powercab. I'm assuming you are using the speaker sim in the PC not FRFR (that would make a huge difference). Later in the vid ritchie says he's playing with the PC at 85%. If his signal is hot to the PC that'd be very very loud.

reamping with Logic. Volume is insanely loud through monitors
waymda replied to andymguitar's topic in Helix
It would be good to know which outputs you're using for the PowerCab vs the monitors - or if you're using the same. Also, how loud have you set the output from the M audio interface. Your mention of digital suggest L6 Link, but that would also indicate a PC+. Either way people tend to use the PC(+) and monitors differently when it comes to controlling volume. Monitors tend to be set as loud as you would want and then we control how much input we send for the volume - pretty much what you did with the Helix. Powercabs are generally better having their volume controlled at the cab, like using a stage amp, and can take quite a hot signal. Because I work live, I have disabled the volume control on my Helix so I can't accidently move it whilst performing. For home use with monitors it runs into a mixer using the XLR outputs. This also means I optimise the output of patches so they are a) consistent in perceived volume, and b) aren't too hot. As I use L6 link to the PC+s I could enable volume control for the XLRs (or line outs) to go straight into my monitors. I could even easily do this using the global settings when at home vs live and hope I don't forget to reset when live. I'm making lots of guesses about your set-up so hope this helps.
