  1. nice job Peter. You should post your patches to CustomTone and add the link for us too!
  2. a tube amp must have a load when not on STBY. They do make loads that you can use to reduce volume called attenuators. You can also make a cab isolation box which is a sealed, sound proofed box containing your cab. Using both together would certainly allow you to crank your amp without bothering the neighbors. There may be other issues such as heat generated, extra wear on the tubes etc. but that is the answer. Check out these links for more info... http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Quiet_Please_Attenuators_and_Their_Many_Uses http://www.tedweber.com/atten.htm http://www.amptone.com/diyisobox.htm
  3. ok, I apologize. Of course the POD is an amp sim but you still have to run the output through something physical, tube or SS amp, PA, L series, combo, stack, etc. That's what the Colonel was asking. Different output settings used with various gear can also have a big effect on the final tone.
  4. seriously? people go out of their way to help with your question and you want to be a smarta$$? Figure out your own lollipope from now on...
  5. DT25 does not bypass the tubes with direct out unless you are in STBY... otherwise the direct out is tapped off the output transformer after the tubes... :)
  6. with current prices and rebates definitely go with online vs used. Sweetwater has always been good to me and you get a 2 yr warranty. Something to think about if you just HAVE to have maple fretboard, buy the black one you want at the best price and add compound radius maple neck from Warmoth or another third party. There are threads on here about it and those guys rave about it... The current $150 Line 6 rebate will cover the cost!
  7. OK, I think I understand now what you want to do. You want to use an external preamp with your HD500 and your DT25. The problem is if you do not have an amp block selected, the DT defaults to channel B internal amp which messes up your patch. Here is my suggestion. Connect the HD500 to the DT25 by L6 link only. Connect the preamp pedal to the FX loop of the HD500, not the DT25. Now you need to create a dual path patch. In path A you will place an preamp block to lock the DT power section to work with your pedal. Edit the topology, class, and pentode/triode the way you want it but don't worry about any other settings for now. Leave the preamp block in channel B empty but add your FX loop either before or after it (doesn't matter). Now in the mixer mute channel A and center channel B. Place your pre section effects where you want them and place your post section effects after the mixer. Set input 1 to something different to what you are using and set input 2 to guitar or variax, whichever you are using. So now your guitar signal comes in on input 2, goes through the pre section effects, through your pedal in channel B and the post effects and goes straight to the DT by L6 link. Channel A does nothing except lock the DT power section and cab/mic models to work with your pedal. No need for 4 cable stuff, just the one cable to your DT and everything else right at the POD. Hope this helps!
  8. First off, no disrespect but, why would you want to put the HD500 in the DT effects loop? Why not use the L6 link and get what this was designed to do? You lose so much by not using the L6 link that it just makes no sense. Please don't say the amp sounds better by itself because that is simply not true. You may have to make a few adjustments with the POD but they are the exact same amps, cabs, and mics in the POD as in the DT. Use the HD500 like it was designed with L6 link and put your pedal in the HD500 FX loop. Then you can place it wherever you think is best for each patch. One other thing, if you put a pedal in the FX loop of the DT it can't be moved in the patch. I am not even totally sure where it would be in the chain with the POD connected with L6 link, probably after the full POD signal path but before the DT power section. That would really preclude using any overdrives or distortions. Kind of limited to delays, reverbs, chorus type effects and even then, not movable in the signal chain.
  9. Actually, that's not true. I posted ages ago how to get great acoustic tones with your DT and the same method works for synth tones as well. Not saying the Lseries aren't great, they are. But the DT is amazing too. http://line6.com/support/topic/5553-acoustic-solution-for-jtv-with-dt-amps/
  10. Check the volume pedal FX block. It can also be set as a panner and controlled by the expression pedal...
  11. totally optional on the cab sims BUT, in your original post you seemed to indicate you really like the DT internal tones. The DT internal all use cab and mic sims, the same defaults as when you load the pre in the POD so if you want to match the DT internal you need to use the cab and mic settings. I use a DT25 head with my own 2X12 cabs with V30's and Guv'nors so sometimes I just like to hear my own cabs. Other times I like to use the cab and mics to shape the tone. Play around with the other cab and mic models to see what you like. You can also use the cab DEP settings to further shape the tone. Also don't be afraid to change the topology for the amp you pick. There is a huge difference between topo I and topo III. You are not tied to the default settings. While there is no harm to putting the DT master up and the POD down, there is also no real difference. We beat this to death when the change first came out allowing the POD master to control DT volumes and the end result is they both work together but it doesn't matter physically in the power section which is up and which is down.
  12. Sorry but you didn't say if you checked the POD FX loop send and return levels. I know this sounds dumb but is the POD FX loop block turned on? It sounds like maybe the guitar signal is going straight to the amp FX return without going through the 5150 preamp... It has happened to me before where I put the block in the chain but forgot to turn it on...
  13. I've been experimenting too and that has brought me full circle back to the DT25 also. I just don't get the same reward from the PA. I am considering adding a M5 in the loop but not an M13... too big for me. Have you tried connecting the M13 midi to the POD? I know with the M5 it will save the settings with the patch, not sure about the M13 but that would be cool... I would also consider a Logidy Epsi IR loader but not until they add midi capability.
  14. Probably a typo but it should be: Guitar -> pod guitar in pod fx send -> amp guitar in amp FX send -> pod fx return Pod R/mono -> amp fx return give it a whirl... also, be sure that the POD FX switch is set to Line as is the switch beside the expression pedal. Check to see that the FX send and return levels are turned up, check if there is a send/return level adjustment on the 5150 too. Silly question but, is the 5150 full volume with just the guitar in (no POD or pedals)?
  15. I have no idea what you are referring to as a horrible direct sound compared to previous versions... but if that is your opinion, so be it... still doesn't change my advice regards purchasing one. The EQ options are not a significant detractor. There are so many ways to achieve any tone with the POD that the argument, other than philosophically doesn't hold water...
  16. Of course EQ is important but don't let these issues alone stop you from getting one. Everything is still workable, even if it isn't quite the way we expect it to be... There is nothing else in this price range that even comes close... IMHO...
  17. it's really your choice. Do you have two channels on the board available? Do you use stereo effects? The XLR outs do not sum to mono so if you use the right XLR you only get the right side of the signal. The 1/4 outs do sum to mono if you only use one so you would get both sides but in mono. If you can have 2 channels on the board then you can pick either or. The XLR signal is mic level so the 1/4 is much hotter. If you don't need stereo then you can either build your patches to be mono by putting everything in either channel A or B or putting a mono FX block as the last in the chain and use the XLR, or use the 1/4 out.
  18. Any chance of a few pics of what you did? Interested to see exactly what you are talking about and how you did it...
  19. No, I mean I use the models almost exclusively with my HD500. I rarely use the mags at all. I have other guitars if I want to just use mags. Not that they aren't any good, just that I am very happy with the models. I have leveled the strings and also the models themselves. I have posted about it in other threads on these boards. And yes, it is nice to be able to switch from acoustic to electric and alt tunings with ease.
  20. Do it, do it now! Seriously, I love my 69. It is my go to guitar and 90% of the time I am using it with modeling vice mags. I haven't had any of the issues others have noted elsewhere, a little nut sauce and a good setup and it stays right where I like it. I bought mine on sale too so get it while you can...
  21. good luck and if you can, post some pics and a description of the work involved...
  22. shocked, really, shocked... lol
