Actually the only other modeling in the Helix that is ported over from HD/M series other than the reverbs were the Wahs. If I remember correctly.

That makes so much cents!

Oh we know! You hail from planet Tunertron.

Noise Gate - Anyone else find it really impacts the tone?
Lachdanan0121 replied to GenoBluzGtr's topic in Helix
Yes the noise gates do in fact alter the tone! Doesn't matter if it is at the input, or done through a dedicated block in the Helix. I have gotten to the point where I just don't use it. Though I am not a LIVE player. I found if I need a good gate I will run the dry guitar through Fabfilter's Pro-G plugin, before it hits Helix Native. Oh, and I do plenty of high gain as well. -
Oh I am not knocking it. I wouldn't mind seeing it added, but only after some different amps. Friedman, XTC, a couple more Engls would be stellar. Hell I would like to see some Diamond Amps modeled. I don't think I have seen them in any modelers. I was stoked about the Helix getting unique voiced amps like the Cartographer, that you won't find easily in other modelers.

Fine by me. At this point I welcome those more than new amps. Gives me extra high quality reverbs I can use on other sources with Native while I mix. I was just basically saying that when we do get more amp models... More Marshalls are the last thing the Helix needs.
-
I seriously hope that the next update doesn't add yet another Marshall, the Helix could use some other amps before another Marshall.

I am looking forward to those new HX Reverbs. I wonder if the icon will be different for those, or not? Interested to see what all else this update will include.

It can do all kinds of music. I do everything from symphonic, electronic, rock, metal, hip hop, pop, scoring... It is a favorite among those that specialize in those genres you mention, but FLS can do all of it. You are only really limited by your creativity. On this aspect with genre focus, I think that applies to all DAWs.

You must purchase the producers edition (or higher) of FL Studio to be able to do what you want. (such as record/handle audio)

Really? Maybe the kinks have been worked out, or perhaps I was mistaken. There were several threads pointing out Logic for Native, but I also thought they mentioned Studio One as well. However, if it works in Studio One without issues then great! I must have been mistaken. EDIT: I remember now it was specifically the Helix Native automation not being sent correctly in Studio One, other users also reported it with other guitar amp sims. - It was Logic that had high CPU usage for Native. Do you do much automation with Helix Native? I know in FL Studio I have no trouble at all with Helix Native. (automation, or otherwise) Perhaps the issue was users trying to use Helix Native with an older version of Studio One?!?

I'd recommend Reaper if you are on a budget. I would point out that there are issues with Helix Native with both Studio One, and Logic. Read several threads on these very forums with users having significant CPU usage in those 2 DAWS. If you want to pay premium. I would suggest one of the following. FL Studio - if you want a non-linear approach to working on music, if you are very creative this may be the spot for you - its flexibility is unmatched. Also you get FREE Lifetime updates - unlike the rest of the DAWs. Cubase - if you want a more linear approach to working on music, if you are use to the more traditional routes of recording. - Also there is Nuendo if you are wanting to do any video editing, but that is one expensive program. Studio One - If you have no intent of using Helix Native, this is also a good choice for a linear DAW. Hopefully the Native issue will be resolved soon.

Ha, no I wish. :P He is one hell of a guitar player. One of the best when it comes to rock rhythm, and lead playing. I would love to see him improve his heavier rhythm playing though. I heard rumors he is bringing an 8 string on for the next album. So I am intrigued to say the least... He is an inspiration of mine though. Truly plays like that LIVE too.

Should I make the move from “real gear to a Helix?
Lachdanan0121 replied to Sebaileyus's topic in Helix
"If you can't hear as good as me, here have some obsolete magic..." This thread has surely devolved. -
OH YEAH! :P I recently bought Fabfilter's Pro-R reverb, it has become my go to reverb. I have a couple of other good reverb plugins as well, reverb is one of my favorite FX. I never owned a Bigsky though... I am really excited about Helix's improved reverbs. This makes Helix/Native even more useful for things other than guitar! HX reverbs should also give me an improved wet monitor for guitar/vocals, and even bigger palette of high quality reverbs to chose from when recording. I don't really use the Helix reverbs much in my final ReAmping/mixing, so this may change that. I hope it does.

Works like a charm in FL Studio as well. Though that isn't really any surprise as FL Studio has the most robust, and powerful automation implementation of all the DAWs. It really is one of the most underrated DAWs for anything "other than" dance/house/hardcore/trance etc. (it definitely isn't underrated in those categories) Once you have that assigned to a knob/switch you then automated the assigned knob/switch. You do not directly automate the parameter itself.

Double Take...settings? or my ears/tastes weird
Lachdanan0121 replied to themetallikid's topic in Helix
That is phasing. It typically can create a boxy sound, a hollow sound, or a flange/phasy sound depending on how severe the phasing is. -
I think I lean more towards the Valve Driver. I prefer it the most so far. Of course, that could change in 3 months. :P

As a poet myself, I have to say Cruisinon2 is quite the "wordsmith." ;)

If you don't record much then don't worry with Helix Native. I use Helix Native on basically every guitar, and bass track these days. But I record/mix a lot.

You are probably going to want to adjust the low and high cuts. Helix cabs give you much more frequency range than what typical cabs do. Start there you are going to want to set your low cut somewhere below 100hz. Try 60hz, and see if you loose too much low end. Your high cut will also need to be reduced, though to your taste. I would start at around 7khz. (adjust from there) You should also experiment with the different mics on the HX cabs, as well as, the mic positioning, and early reflection. Using the multi band compression - 3 band compressor - can allow you to compress your lows/mids/highs individually.

Guitar Player Mag Jan 2018 - Helix Editor Multibanding Pg 17
Lachdanan0121 replied to spikey's topic in Helix
This cross-over technique basically allows you to process your highs, and lows individually with more than just say compression in a multi-band compressor. I use this technique quite a bit when mixing bass in my DAW. That said, I have to say I don't really do it for guitars that much so far. The closest I get to doing that on guitars is using "Multi-Band Compressors." Its something I will try in the future though, among a great many other things. I like experimentation, and I like improvement. -
The Presonus Eris are good entry level studio monitors. Well the Eris 5, and Eris 8 are. The Eris 4.5 have an issue. One speaker gets power from an onboard amp, the other speaker is tethered to the one with the amp. Causes 2 issues. 1. Limits speaker placement as the tether cable isn't that long. 2. Like most tethered pairs of speakers, the one that has to be tethered is lower in volume. Not just a little, it is noticeable. This creates a broken soundstage. I speak from experience.

Thanks for the information.

Lol, I need new glasses too. Mine are 7 years old. I catch myself tweaking a compressor while mixing, can't hear any changes for 5-10 minutes only to find out I had it in bypass...
