I invariably touch one of the Footswitches and end up changing an unwanted parameter. This usually happens when I try to make changes at the gig. Meh. With every desirable feature comes an equal and opposite negative consequence.

What makes you think that?

So glad Line6 decided to include these controls within the models. They really bring out the magic in the amp models in a manner that is far easier to get than with the real things. They allow us to literally mod our own amps. To me, tube amps are highly impractical devices because they don't get that wonderful responsiveness until the power tubes are really getting pushed. But by then, they're way too loud. Most gigging situations demand compromising tone or feel or both. The Helix takes care of these issues.

Well who'd have thought? You'd think that the cheaper modelers they offer would sell better than the most expensive one. But no. They can't keep the most expensive model in stock. Thanks, Yamaha, for giving Line 6 the kick in the pants it had needed for many years. Since I sold the XTLive many years ago, I'd given their products a very wide berth. Never thought I'd see myself owning one again... But here I am now with the mighty Helix... And boy am I glad to have it.

I don't think it's a biggie if it's just the Global Settings. It'd be a different story if it was affecting all the presets in a weird way.

Please upvote. Thanks. Always on effects return for external loopers. http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Global-Always-On-Effects-Return/809601-23508 Edit/Compare feature so you can check the changes you're making against the original patch. http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Edit-Compare/820832-23508

True. The rack does put the interface closer to your eyes but if you gig, the penalty is setup complication and one extra device (pedal controller) to pack around. I suppose, if you're going to edit the standalone pedal unit at the gig and want to use the software editor, you'll have to pack a laptop. Alas, there is no perfect solution. Whaddayagonnado?

I think it depends on how you feel about your back.

That is my main issue with tube amps. That they gotta be loud to feel good to play through. As modern speakers become more and more efficient, they render even very low power amps to be far too loud to be practical.
-
I lean towards a darker very low buzz overdrive sound compared to most players and was concerned that like the Pods, the Helix's tone shaping tools wouldn't be up to the task. Happily, that was simply not the case! Should Line 6 give us independent preamps and power amps and maybe the ability to A/B between pAth 1 & 2 in the near future, I'm not sure that another modeler will be in my future.
-
There's a request for what I'm about to mention on IdeaScale but just to reiterate, it would be handy as a tone shaping tool to have the input impedance be programmable per preset. Thanks.

The Helix's basic chorus effect is the best! I hardly do anything to tweak it. I just slap it on and it sounds freaking great! Love it.

Nice!

Hmmm... tempting... but I have far too many guitars as it is.

I've had the exact opposite experience. Furthermore, having the extra "imaginary" controls has precisely zero adverse effects on how the amp models sound if you don't use them. Leave them in their default positions and only use the controls that you know to be pertinent. Why prevent others from experimenting? After all, that's how Rock n' Roll was invented - by breaking the rules. Where would we be if Hendrix never experimented with pedals? Where would we be if the people who decided to tinker, modify and push the limits of tube amp design decided not to? Music today would be excruciatingly boring.

I also submitted an idea where, within the amp block, you could swap preamp and powe amp types. I wonder if this will save on DSP use. Was it really necessary to downvote it? I mean, couldn't you just not vote for it?

New submission. Please Upvote. http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/A-Virtual-Effects-Loop-in-the-Amp-and-Amp-+-Cab-blocks/818552-23508

Open letter to Line 6 - Please future-proof our Helix patches!
hideout replied to billlorentzen's topic in Helix
This might be doable if kept within Line 6s range of modelers. If you involve other manufacturers, this sounds an awful lot like the idea behind the General Midi spec where a bunch of manufacturers agreed on a certain set of standards that devices would adhere to. They could maybe devise a Midi SysEx standard that would translate from one manufacturer to another. You'd still end up having to tweak as it won't really be possible for everyone to implement things in the same way. The big hurdle would be getting all the manufacturers to agree. -
This would be made even better with separate Preamp and Power Amp blocks.

I like reverb. That said, I don't have any issues with the Helix 's reverbs, just an observation. I usually gravitate towards the hall reverbs on past devices. On the Helix, I tend to like the plate reverb better. It sounds closer to the hall reverbs on my older units. The hall verb on the Helix is a bit too subtle for me. If I could wish for anything, it's that the stereo effects would sum to mono a bit better. Maybe that would require reworked mono effects, I don't know. But it would be nice to have a stereo effect not lose too much from phase cancellation when you occasionally use the Helix in mono. This is a malady that plagues almost all stereo effects devices as well as sample playback synthesizers and is very apparent on acoustic piano samples.

Beat me to it. I use different picks for different styles of music or even just how I feel at that particular time.

I'm thinking about the "Touch To Edit" feature and am wondering about something. When I touch a footswitch I can hear a slight hum coming through the headphones. I wonder if this is somehow related. I have a feeling that there's a relationship to the way touch is detected and grounding.

Phantom power cannot cause clipping.

Thanks, Phil. I really think this should be a global thing, don't you? Can't really see a reason why you'd want a different pedal response on a different patch.
-
Coulda sworn there was a way to adjust the expression pedal's response curve. Can't find it now - in either the manual or the Helix itself. I even did a search for it in the manual. Hmmm...
