To preface I am on a g7 HP Pavilion with Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64. i5 with 8Gb RAM and manually adjusted swap file size. I use Firefox for downloading the latest App installer (in this case 2.00.1) which I check before even thinking about using the Line6 Updater program for the 2.0 firmware update. And as a side note I always disable my anti-virus during the process, which is actually standard for installing any software in my case. Other than the recognized Z value bug, my upgrade has been seamless; I am real type A though. And I only use the editor for backing up with very few minor changes so no thoughts on the Vintage Echo mid controller issue in the Editor. Dennis

Vintage/transistor tape delays. Disappointing in at least one respect?
jpdennis replied to billbassler's topic in Helix
Being an old guy, the tape echos I have owned (Maestro Tube & Transistor being two) the speed change did affect the pitch which some players seemed to like or at least use. I never changed tempo in a song unless absolutely unavoidable when I was using analog. With the Helix I can just have two patches preset without using the tap tempo if I want. With the snapshot feature this isn't a waste of a block for me due to how the presets now work as well. But YMMV. B) And I have seen in another thread this is an issue in the editor. Dennis -
Only 200 chords? What about the confounded bridge? B) And yes, I no longer can move 3 double stack Marshalls by myself (even if I wanted to I wouldn't). Happily married, six daughters, 11 grandchildren with two of the daughters not populating the earth yet, I can afford most all gear, AND yet I chose the Helix. I like it!! The ears have it. LOL  Dennis

As far as the gate I use the feature in an input block that I just copy to each and every preset I want that same setting to be use in. It is quite effective for me. YMMV I have even created a "my favorites 1 & 2" for blocks I want to have to copy and paste as needed in other presets as I build more. Dennis

And there is a setting globally for the snapshots to stay in this view until you press FS6 to exit to presets. Under global settings -> switches > knob 4 needs to be set to manual. That way I use FS6 to see all the 10 stomps then hit FS6 to see the presets and then press FS1+FS7 at the same time to go in between snapshots. I'm still playing with this feature but in my scenario I would have the preset set the use snapshot for various passages within songs (intro, versus, solo, chorus, transition, outro, etc. So no on stage edits during snapshot usage Dennis

Excellent report. Last night the Helix with FW 2.0 knocked it out of the park. Great tone, many compliments (including my wife who is very critical ... which I actually admire and enjoy), and great band mix. Using the Global EQ, setting the output to max letting the mixer channel control signal, and just playing was very easy and extremely enjoyable. I didn't get to the snapshots of any of my presets during the 4 hour show so at this point the Z value was not addressed nor did it in any way detract my tone from FH. Thought maybe someone would like to get a report on this. That's my story and ... Dennis

I held back for a while on using modelers. Once I made the decision I immersed myself into the ins and outs. I read some then applied what I thought I had learned. It has taken time and thanks to the people in this forum and others I have been able to get a wide variety of tones. I've even been able to begin to capture my Mesa tone I use with various pedals. For me it is the ability to just plug in the Helix and use various guitars or even just one for a evening's performance based upon set lists. Then there are others using dedicated monitors for a full stage sound based upon their tastes. It has taken awhile and I suspect I am not even 1/64th of the way to learn all the capability. But give yourself time to learn the unit and create presets from scratch. And after a few months I just completely re-read the manual twice in the past two days. I learned a lot more. You must have had some concept of what it would be for you if it was where you want it to be at tonality wise now.. Good luck on your quest. Dennis

It is of interest to me that any patch that has the input block highlighted when saved also will appear as edited when it is turned on and/or chosen. If I highlight any other block location (used or not by a FX) the preset will not exhibit that behavior. Dennis

It is a recognized bug now. Line 6 support said they are working on it for the firmware release. It is of interest to me that any patch that has the input block highlighted when saved also will appear as edited when it is turned on and/or chosen. +1 ryansalmond. I have noticed this as well. Dennis

First I would sample the initial sound when you change to a preset and after strumming your instrument change the setting to auto, strum, then to 1Meg and strum. If you hear no difference your OK for now. But if you do then ... Yes you'll have to set the snapshots at 1 Meg (make sure to push and twist the Z value knob so it is a variable in all the presets). And even when you go back to the initial preset from another p[reset it will be in Auto even though you have a specific setting which will activate when you then choose a snapshot. This has been identified as a bug, it is reported, and it is supposed to be addressed in the next FW upgrade. That is what I was told today. Dennis

Possible work around http://line6.com/support/topic/21651-to-z-or-not-to-z/ Dennis

Thanks for the idea. However, I tried both ways. Using guitar is the only way you can get to the Guitar in-Z value anyway. Dennis

Found this on page twenty of the version 2.00 manual; "All input blocks have a dedicated noise gate. Threshold and Decay parameters are grayed out unless the Input Gate parameter is turned on:" The next sentence after the graphical display goes on to say that; "Guitar blocks have an additional Guitar In-Z parameter." From what I am reading while this is specific for the guitar block it is not dedicated to the input block which is why I cannot use the copy block feature to copy the Z value. I get the gate values to copy fine because they are dedicated to the input block itself regardless of type of input block. Thoughts? Dennis PS: Still reading

I am tracking this issue in the following thread http://line6.com/support/topic/21651-to-z-or-not-to-z/ Dennis

If you create a brand new preset the same thing happens. The preset will not save the Guitar-In Z but the snapshots will. I'm going to re-read through the whole manual to see if there is something in it that states that is how it should work; just to be safe. Dennis

Well, after a long day and the thought to go to bed early ... I played with the Guitar-In Z. You'd think I couldn't beat a dead horse, but wait ... It is working!! OK, maybe not way I'd like it but here is what I found so far. If I set Guitar-In Z as an adjustable parameter it can be accurately saved in all 8 snapshots within the presets I have imported which I built in the previous FW version. Now when I go to another preset then comeback to the one I just modified all 8 snapshots still have the saved value AND they sound accurate. BUT, here is the rub ... As I said the snapshots have the correct value and the correct sound ... including snapshot 1 It is the preset that I initially switch back to after saving all snapshots that is harsh with the sound of the "auto" value for the Guitar-in Z value. Yet if I then choose any of the 8 snapshots they are all fine. Not sure but my thinking is that somehow the preset built in a FW that did not have snapshots is like the ghost in the machine. It is there, it says snapshot 1, but it really isn't snapshot 1 until you use the FS to chose it as snapshot 1. Note I did save the preset twice before starting this testing. WHAT I HAVE NOT DONE; I haven't created a preset from scratch in the new FW 2.00 with or without the 2.00.1 editor. So my theory could be inaccurate based upon incomplete testing. I am beat and have to get ready for a State DMV license renewal so I'm calling it a night. More later unless someone else would like to do what I haven't yet. Thoughts from anyone? Dennis PS: Line 6 did a hell of a job with this FW and App version. So, at the end of the day ... Thank you Line 6 for getting this out and letting me if not us get the scenes everyone has been asking for. PPS: DI, jpdennis like snapshots (the tonality of my voice is likened to Cookie Monster)

Thanks. I'll take it out for a spin once the week settles down with all the new ideas Snapshots gives me B) Dennis

DI addresses the fact that the high on the radar need became the snapshots. I'm not saying your needs for the stomp box you requested aren't important. Just saying it is not in the mix yet. But since I have been using the Helix the updates keep coming AND they keep improving the Helix. The acoustic simulations can be currently addressed via the preset that Glenn DeLaune has on his site for sale, which really isn't much $$$ and the demo can be seen via With snap shots I am thinking I can take Glenn's preset and add other blocks to make it a really cool preset for acoustic AND electric now [sHOUT OUT to Glenn for starting me out on that path and Line 6 for snapshots]. Also roscoe5 has a great collection of IRs for an acoustic preset. No disrespect intended. Just offering ideas for the time being Dennis

I have attached the pics of the preset and the FS switches (not the best but hopefully capable of showing) The Route To is relabeled Switch Amp and Smash It is a combo of two pedals and a couple of parameter changes (as are two other FS. This is the one I was worried about importing. Thanks God I had the individual presets exported from my two personal customized setlists. Not a big deal since I am rather geeky anyway. I really can't wait to setup/customize snapshots for this one. Dennis

And the Helix is going to the next level of play. B) So two things; I am now a believer in the snapshots feature I'll probably be so immersed in playing I will only be a little anticipatory of the next revision Seriously, Great Job Line 6 Dennis

Great reply. I also use the patches I build. I do like using the videos for learning and i got a couple of Glenn's patches just to see what I may be missing from the videos as more of a hands on approach; I'm so used to dialing in my old Mesa gear anyway;of course it wasn't old when I bought it ... did I say that out loud? :o I really enjoy the way the Helix lets you use gear that would cost more then this guy could afford right now. And I did post two pictures of the patch I am having issues with on the Facebook page. If I can get the time to see how to upload my medai here I'll post those pictures in a spereate thread. And I was so looking forward to some Pasadena sounds ... Dennis
