There are several patches for acoustic in the "Bass-Aco-Voc" factory setlist, and also in the "Variax" factory (which works also with normal guitars) setlist, all made by Line6. So before downloading other patches try what you have already in your device. You might like some of them, or find useful as a starting point. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Quick answer: No. First thing, if you send the mix through the POD chain (through AUX or MIC as you said) it would be processed along with the guitar, unless you change all your needed patches to include 2 independent paths, where one of them would be empty and dedicated to the mix to let it pass through unprocessed. An other option would be to send the mix through the POD mp3 input, that way the mix wouldn't pass through the chain, and you could still use your old patches as they are. But in any of the above cases both the guitar and mix would pass through the POD outputs, and there is no way around. (Actually if using the 2 independent paths patches you could deviate the mix path signal by putting a FX LOOP at the end of it, and so the mix wouldn't go back to the PA. But you wouldn't even have the mix through headphones (In-Ear) connection as it can only replicate what the standard outputs do.) IMO what you need is a small personal mixer where both the guitar signal and the mix signal (minus the guitar if possible) come in from the PA, so you can mix them as you like and connect your In-Ear to. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

In your patches (or if you prefer globally) set the input impedance to 3.5 (or 1) MΩ instead of the default AUTO, and make sure the master volume knob on the device is full up. Experiment also with the "1/4" OUT" switch near the pedal and see which setting (LINE or AMP) works better with the input of your Darkglass. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Is a preamp like GAP pre 73 can be good for the HD500X
hurghanico replied to Segomil's topic in POD HD
In my opinion, the quality of the POD mic preamp is more or less equivalent to that of most audio interfaces for home recording, therefore more than enough for most cases. If you use well the tools available to process the signal, you can get excellent results. Obviously the quality of the preamps in the products dedicated to professional recording is superior, but as I said earlier if you use a higher level preamp, the rest of the connected devices (mics, AI, monitors, etc.) must also be at a comparable level to really appreciate the subtle differences in sound performance. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -

hurghanico replied to Segomil's topic in POD HD
If more gain/punch for the vocals is all you need, you have several tools in the POD to achieve it. 1) turn up the Mic level knob on the rear panel of your device as needed. 2) use the Studio EQ or the Vintage pre and boost the mic signal if needed 3) apply the LA Studio compressor PS. the Vintage Pre is the model of a pre-amp which would be even better than the pre-amp you wanted to buy, ie it is the model of the Requisite Y7 vintage Tube Mic Preamp description: A vintage-voiced tube mic preamp based on the Requisite Y7. Place this model at any point in the signal chain to give incredible warmth to vocal sounds and guitar and bass tones. Its controls include: Gain: Input Gain HPF: Provides a High-Pass Filter with a range of 20Hz-500Hz LPF: Provides a Low-Pass Filter with a range of 5kHz-20kHz Phase: 0 or 180 degree out of phase (useful when used within parallel signal paths) Output: Output Level ---------------------------------------- The mentioned Teletronix LA-2A studio tube amplified optical compressor (Leveling Amplifier) model is also excellent for vocals and else.. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -

hurghanico replied to Segomil's topic in POD HD
If you need a high-level voice preamp, and if you also have microphones, audio interface and monitors of the same high-level (remember: the weakest link in the chain always affects the end result, no matter how better the other connected components are), then the purchase of the GAP pre 73 might make sense. But if you think that the purchase of the GAP pre 73 will improve the sound of the POD, then surely it will be a useless purchase, wasted money. If the POD does not satisfy you completely anymore, better buy a new generation device. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -
Preamp Modal vs. Amp Modal. What's the difference?
hurghanico replied to Nylander88's topic in Tone Discussion
Yours is not the "ultimate answer" to the question about which is the difference between a preamp and and an amp, question to which I gave what could be considered rightly an answer, .. in this context what you said could be a "suggestion".. and surely not an explanation of what has been asked. As they say: "first learn the rules then break them". _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -
Try connecting to your PA or monitors through the POD XLR outputs and set the Balanced Output ground (gnd) switch on the rear panel to LIFT. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

If so, much probably you have a ground loop problem, which happens when you connect other devices to the POD, like your monitor, computer and/or external amp. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Yes, but on the far left of the unit. However if the phantom power is turned off and the mic knob is all the way down, it means that your problem depends on something else. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Nothing to do with the software. As you can see in the above pic the only CC commands which should be used are 001 for EXP 1 and 002 for EXP 2, but to control what? --> their assignment. Eg if you put a Volume block in the POD chain and assign it to the EXP 2, by remote with a MIDI controller you can send to the POD CC# 002 commands with 0-127 values to control the volume... if you put a Wah block in the POD chain and assign it to the EXP 1, by remote with a MIDI controller you can send to the POD CC# 001 commands with 0-127 values to control the wah. As long as the MIDI controller and the POD are communicating on the same MIDI channel number, it should work. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Preamp Modal vs. Amp Modal. What's the difference?
hurghanico replied to Nylander88's topic in Tone Discussion
I don't have a HX line product (I'm still using a HD500) therefore I'm not aware about how much outdated are the info given in the available manual compared to the current level of development reached by the HX series. However in regard to your original question about the difference between an amp (supposedly full) and a pre-amp the answer does not concern a specific device but it is a concept valid in general, that is: a preamp (real or modeled) represents only the first part of an amp since it lacks the power-amp. Then the difference between a device and another could be in their default behavior when selecting an amp or preamp, eg some might apply automatically a cab after them and some not, and might apply different parameter settings, etc. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -
Preamp Modal vs. Amp Modal. What's the difference?
hurghanico replied to Nylander88's topic in Tone Discussion
As the freely downloadable HX manual says: Amp+Cab = Amp+Cab blocks are convenient in that when you select an Amp model, its matching Cab model is automatically loaded Amp = Amp blocks are identical to Amp+Cab blocks, except they contain no matched cab model Preamp = We’ve also included a complete set of Preamp versions of each Amp model, which provide the tone of just the preamp stage of the amp—recommended when feeding Helix into an external amplifier (either via 1/4" to your traditional amp or via L6 LINK to a Line 6 DT25 or DT50). Cab = There are two subcategories of Cab blocks—Single and Dual. Not surprisingly, dual Cabs take twice as much DSP as single Cabs. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -
If you want to use the headphones (and not your real amp/cab) you should use very different patches than those made for the POD connected to your amp. - When using headphones or PA monitors your patches should include at least 1 full version amp+cab model (as opposed to pre-amp models ie those with "pre" in their name). - When connecting the POD to your amp standard input no amp model is needed, when connecting instead the POD to your amp RETURN your patches should include at least 1 pre-amp version amp (no cab) model, when the POD is placed instead between the SEND and RETURN no amp model should be used. Since the POD headphones output always replicates what the standard outputs do (and obviously not what is coming out of your real amp/cab), the sound in the headphones of the patches with no amp or with pre-amp and no cab are not going to sound very good. That's why when using headphones you need patches complete with at least the bare minimum necessary, ie a full amp model with its cab. Going back to your original issue, if with the POD disconnected from your computer (to avoid the influence of a badly set driver), you do/use properly made patches (even the factory ones), you should not have any problem to get distortion, actually you should get plenty of it, since the POD input signal is already boosted (hiddenly) by default, and makes the models distorting very easily if not too much. After all that said, if you still don't get distortion, I haven't any other suggestions to give... who knows?..maybe you have a broken unit (hope not). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Since at this point I suspect that the PC/POD driver (you said you are using the editor) is not set properly, please try the following: disconnect the POD from your computer (and do not reconnect it until the end of this experiment) turn it off turn it on connect the guitar to the POD connect the POD to the amp guitar input make a sound manually on the POD, and/or try some factory presets see if you're still having the same problem or if it is working as expected _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

If your device is making noise also: without any instrument connected and without being connected to the computer and in different places, I suspect that it needs to be repaired. Another thing that came to mind which who knows could be worth checking is if the mic phantom power is enabled. Time ago I heard that some Helix owners had a bad noise problem with their units, and at the end they found that the culprit was the phantom power which was enabled. I don't know if it could be the same issue with the POD HD PRO X. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Does the hissing noise appear as soon as you select an amp model with the guitar disconnected? If not, it means that your guitar (especially if it is single coil PU equipped) is acting as an antenna. What happens when connecting instead a humbucker equipped guitar? Did you try using a noise gate? Having the POD connected at the same time to the computer and to the amplification system could give easily noise problems, if you are using a laptop it could be a good idea to disconnect it from the mains and use it only on batteries in order to neutralize/break a ground loop which may accour. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Absolutely not.. (your scheme above is wrong, the part regarding the POD connections doesn't make sense, generally what is labeled as SEND is an output, and you can't connect an output to another output).. you have basically 2 choices: 1) If you want to use the POD just for effects connect the guitar to the POD and the POD to the amp guitar input. 2) if you want instead (as suggested by me previously) to combine the POD pre-amps models (+ effects) with your amp power-amp (thus bypassing your amp pre-amp), connect the guitar to your POD and the POD to the RETURN of your amp (you don't have to use the SEND output at all). That's it. PS. Actually you could have also a third option (maybe what you really wanted to do) but which personally I wouldn't recommend, ie putting the POD in the FX LOOP of your amp, but doing so some FX models like overdrive, wah would be not in the ideal placement ie in front of your amp. In any case if this type of connection is what you really want, connect the guitar to your amp, connect the amp SEND output to the POD guitar input and one of the 2 POD outputs to the amp RETURN input. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

Preamp Modal vs. Amp Modal. What's the difference?
hurghanico replied to Nylander88's topic in Tone Discussion
Amp (full) = pre-amp + power-amp + cab combined together (every single component contributes heavily to the final sound) Pre-amp = just the pre-amp, therefore (normally, or in most cases) it needs also a (external) power-amp + cab to get a satisfying sound _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips -
Yes you can, an other very good option IMO is to connect your guitar to the POD and the POD directly to the RETURN input of your amp (thus bypassing your amp pre-amp), doing so you could combine the POD pre-amp versions of the amp models with the real power-amp of your amp, thus creating several useful amp sounds, moreover doing so you would have also the chance to put some FX like overdrive, etc. in front of the pre-amp (model) and other FX like delay reverb etc. between the chosen pre-amp (model) and the real power-amp. Some of the most successfull amps are the DT series by Line6, and what they are basically is pre-amp models (exactly the same you find in your POD) into a real tube power-amp and finally a real cab. They are very versatile and sound very good. If you try the above suggestion is like recreating a sort of DT amp. A sort of hybrid that works pretty well. In general based on your rig I suggest not to enable the cab models since you are already using a real one. But obviously you can do any experiment. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

From what I understand, the OP has obtained a satisfying sound from the HD500X directly connected to the powered speaker after using the built-in equalization of the speaker to cut part of the Low and High Ends, and also by using the POD global eq for more cuttings. But he would prefer not to use the speaker built-in eq because it would affect also the voice, drums, etc. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips
