Since it has not been specified we do not know if the OP connects the POD to a guitar amp or to a PA, if he connects it to an amp (which would actually become the last piece of the chain) a change in signal level coming from the POD (due to a change of a general setting done without knowing what it is for) would certainly cause a very different response from the amp, especially if it is a tube amp, if instead he connects the POD to a PA and changes the 1/4" out setting the basic characteristics of the sound would not change per se, but only its impression/perception due to the different resulting volume. Footswitches are not suited for what you need to do since they can only switch between 2 states X/Y eg ON/OFF, therefore they can't be used to stream continuos data. For streaming continuous MIDI data purposes you have to use one of the Expression Controls 1 or 2 which generally speaking can be controlled directly/physically by the pedal, or remotely by MIDI, the Pitch Glide must be assigned to it, and the min and max values must be set too. You can do all the MIDI editings manually in Reaper and save them along with your backing tracks (but it will take time to do all the necessary programming), or as a much quicker solution, if you have a second interface with MIDI ports (POD can't be used directly since it doesn't send/receive MIDI through USB), you can record the live generated expression pedal control MIDI data (if needed you can edit them later in Reaper to make them perfect), and save them along with your backing tracks, but first the patch must be MIDI programmed accordingly to send out the MIDI data generated by the pedal movements. Yes, every time you change a setting related to signal level and/or tone it will affect all the chain and the final sound, no doubt.. The digital/virtual world offers many advantages but has also some drawbacks, hopefully the advantages will be the majority for you.. For noise removal only purposes you have to set only the High Cut Frequency parameter (the last one) of the Global EQ.. Most people set it around 10 kHz, but you can go even lower, use your ears to decide which setting works better for you. If you hear too much boominess use the Low Cut Frequency parameter (the first one) and set it somewhere in the 80 - 120 Hz range. If your MIDI capable backing track player is able to memorize and send also continuous MIDI control changes you could automatize (obviously not visually) at the right times of the song the expression pedal behavior which in turn would affect the specifically assigned FX.. EXP 1 responds to MIDI CC # 001 and EXP 2 responds to MIDI CC # 002, values 0 - 127.. But I don't know how much it would worth the effort to do all the necessary MIDI programming instead of actually using directly the pedal. Hopefully your Audio/MIDI commands player has some control change lines (eg stright, or logarithmic curves, don't know which one would be better) easy appliable from a point A to B (so to say) to change gradually from min to max the EXP control values at the right times. Based on typical usage but also on the fact that you are supposedly using the POD only for FX (no amp modeling) connected to the front panel input of your amp (ie not using the 4 cable method, or not connecting the device directly to the amp RETURN input), I would suggest to change your chain as follows: Wah=>Comp=>Drive=>Chorus=>Mod(PHASER)=>Volume Pedal=>Delay=>Reverb (optional or very little)=>Amp(disabled)=>Mixer Very often (but not always) Wah needs to be the first FX in the chain, and time based FXs need to be the last ones.. In a live scenario a Reverb FX is not really needed much (it could easily mess everything), unless you're playing in an acoustically dead reflection free room (with no natural enviroment reverb), however to get a more full bodied tone a short reverb could be still useful. IMO what could be more optional in the above suggested chain is where to put the mod FXs, ie if before or after the distortion stage (it depends on your preferences). Regarding the Volume block placement for me there are 2 main different uses/placements for it: 1) - first in the chain, ie as a sort of guitar volume knob substitute, ie to change the guitar signal volume and therefore also to change how hard your are pushing the following FXs in the chain, ie to modulate their response/distortion. 2) - last in the chain to control only the chain final signal volume, in any case I prefer to put it always before the time based FXs not to cut abruptly their tail when I turn it down. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips

guitar in - pad/normal --> set it to Pad if the models distort/clip too much with your guitar.. xlr - lift/ground --> set it to Lift when your device is connected through the XLR outputs and there is too much noise.. 1/4" out - line/amp --> if you connect the POD to the front input of a guitar amp set it to Amp, in all other cases set it to Line.. stomp/line switch --> set it to Stomp if you put stomp box FXs in the POD FX LOOP or if you use the POD with the 4 cable method, set it to Line if in the POD FX LOOP you put rack FXs which need/expect Line level input signals.. A Marshall type (Plexi, Park or 800 depending on the flavor you prefer) amp should work fine.. Depending on your guitar signal, set carefully the DRIVE control, ie find its sweet spot setting for the specific combination of your guitar and the chosen amp model.. Open chords (as you said above) with too much distortion sound like a mess, however when you prefer to use very high DRIVE settings, turn down the BASS control or use the Tube Screamer as a clean booster (by its nature it cuts the low end) before the amp to tame the low frequencies which otherwise would mess the resulting tone. (Using the default input settings or the single-input-approach makes a difference you might want to investigate, for more info on that look here: https://allabouthd500x.altervista.org/allabouthd500x/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17) A good way to get rid of the harsh/fizzy frequencies (due to the close miking used to capture the cabs and which become more apparent with high gain tones) and get a more warm tone is to put a Low Pass Filter just after the amp/cab/mic. Correct! Power amps need LINE level signals. FYI the 4CM (which would need a complete FX LOOP circuit with SEND and RETURN connections in the amp) is needed only to use both the pre-amp and power-amp of a real amp, and at the same time have maximum flexibilty to place the FXs before or after the pre-amp. When connecting a modeler/multi-fx directly to the power-amp it means that you always bypass the pre-amp of your real amp (real amp gain and eq controls shouldn't affect the signal anymore), therefore you can replace it with one of the several pre-amp models available in the modeler. 1) As you might know a stereo signal as such needs 2 channels L and R, therefore you need to connect both outputs to retain the signal as stereo. 2) every amp model is mono, therefore the stereo signal of each stereo FX which goes through the amp model is mono-ized by the amp. 3) all the stereo signals coming from stereo FXs placed after the amp model remain stereo, unless you place a mono FX after them, or you connect just 1 output of the device. Worn out or dirty pots.. The phenomenon is called "potentiometer jittering".. With the POD connected to your computer open the Line 6 Audio-MIDI Devices driver control panel and make sure the Record Send level is at maximum level.. if still necessary tick the +18 dB box.. The guitar should be connected to the guitar input of the POD, and one of the POD standard jack outputs (doesn't matter which one, L or R) should be connected to the VOX amp input. The switch 1/4" OUT near the pedal should be set to AMP. Turn up on full the POD master volume physical knob. It should surely work, unless there is a problem with the POD standard jack outputs, or if you are using a bad cable for the connection, or if the current preset has a particular setting which is blocking the output signal. There are a couple of settings that have to do with the input signal that can be set globally or for each individual patch, and have a big influence on the results. They are: 1) the input impedance setting, which, given your problem with the bypass signal, I recommend adjusting to the maximum value 3.5 megahoms for maximum transparency. (Lower values less than 1 megahom make the signal progressively darker and weaker). (Also, if the amp slot in the chain is not empty and the amp model which is there is turned off, make sure that the bypass volume is set to 100%) 2) the setting of the sources of the virtual inputs 1 and 2, if (and only if) you still need more signal make sure that input 2 is set the same as input 1. Having the master volume physical knob on full is perfectly ok in your particular configuration, it corresponds more or less to unity gain. Since you're connecting the POD to the front panel input, the 1/4 "OUT switch near the pedal must be set to AMP (if the POD was instead connected to the RETURN input of the FX LOOP of an amp the above switch should have been set to LINE). The different output modes can be useful only if you use the amp models with the cabs enabled, so if the latter are not enabled you simply use the default Studio/Direct mode. PS. cables and their lenght also affect the tone.. eg specially if you use very long cables, when you connect the guitar directly to the amp you use 1 cable/lenght, but if you put the POD between them the cables/lenghts become 2.. I guess not.. surely there is a limited number of available parameters per FX, but in this specific case the chosen frequency bands in the model are not only less than the inspired MXR equalizer. they are also different, ie: 80, 220, 440, 1100, 2200 Hz.. ..however the first 2 bands (31.2 and 62.5) and the last 2 bands (8k and 16k) of the above MXR graphic eq would be quite useless for electric guitar in particular, the 4k missing band in the model could have been useful to tweak the very high end, but considering that you can combine two or more different EQ FXs in series, you can easily cover the whole spectrum of audible frequencies, if/when necessary. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All about POD HD500/X help and useful tips
