Yes your first option will work and you can set the 1/4" outs on the HD500X to LINE. Your second option will also work and you can use just the PRE-AMP model in the HD500 by selecting NO CAB for the cab option. The effects loop can go wherever you like it best and that will depend on what fx you put in the fx loop,

The Line 6 DC-3g power supply says it's 9V and 3A and the connector has a negative centre. The specs can be found here: http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/general-faq/power-supply-amp-power-and-battery-faq-r445 Specifically: DC-3g: (POD HD 300/400/500 and HD Bean): 9V DC, 3A (3000mA) Plug length: 15mm, Diameter: 5mm, Center Pin: 2mm. So far, I can't find anyone that has the official power supply in stock in the UK, and I can't find any universal power supplies that provide 3A output. Plenty with 1A and 2.5A but none at 3A. Plus the ones I have seen with the lower output all have centres that are positive and again don't mention the connector size. The Line 6 UK site does have a link to STORE but it doesn't show the Accessory options like the US site. Is there anyone in the UK that has successfully found and bought a good working alternative power supply for the HD500? I don't want to risk getting a cheap copy power supply that may explode or catch fire or toast my HD500.

I took my HD500 power supply out of the gig bag today and noticed that it had decided to split apart slightly. I attempted to squeeze both halves together but they just want to spring apart slightly. It's a few years old but has been carefully looked after, but now I am wondering if I should get another one before this one splits apart completely. I may gaffa tape it together in the short term. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it best for me to buy another official Line 6 HD500 power supply or can anyone recommend a sturdier more road worthy alternative? I am based in the UK so would welcome suggestions of what's best to buy here. Thanks in advance.

Found this clip in the HD500 Advanced Guide v2.10 page 3-10 today - does it explain the behaviour you have experienced? Note: When a Controller is assigned to any FX Model parameter, manually editing this parameter’s value will result in changing the Controller’s MIN or MAX value. For example, if the EXP-1 Pedal Controller is assigned to a Wah FX Model’s Position parameter, select the Wah Model, go to its Edit View screen, and select the Position parameter. If you turn multifunction knob #4 when the Pedal is near the "heel" position, the MIN value is adjusted. If you turn the knob when the Pedal is near the "Toe" position, the MAX value is adjusted.

I have finally come tweaked an HD500 patch for JTV model Acoustic-5 through my L2m that I am happy with for live band use. It was set up and saved with HD500 connected to my L2m in ACOUSTIC GUITAR mode via L6 link. FS4 is set to toggle on/off tube compressor for solo boost if needed. It reduces the boomy resonance with the L2m when playing an acoustic model at volume and also reduces the harsh high-mid treble allowing the more subtle acoustic qualities to come through at volume in a live band setting. I have added it to CUSTOMTONE so please feel free to download it and try it out. http://line6.com/customtone/profile/edstar1960 Background info: I have a JTV59 with fw 2.1 and it is strung with Fender 150R's - and they are 10's. I have made some slight global string adjustments and model string level adjustments under Workbench HD. I hope that this patch will be useful - even if it needs to be tweaked some more for your own setup.

Great track. Thanks for sharing.

You set INPUT 1 to VARIAX and INPUT 2 to VARIAX MAGS (or vice versa) and set PATH A and PATH B accordingly for the inputs. You select the desired Variax Acoustic model and save the patch. When you swap to the patch it will switch the Variax to the chosen Variax acoustic model. When you use the Exp pedal to pan between Input 1 and Input 2 - you move between the Variax Model sound and the actual Mag Pickups on the Variax. Hope that helps you crack it!

If you are using the unit standalone (ie: not connected to PC with HD500X Edit active) - then when you change a parameter it will take immediate affect - however it will not be permanent until you physically SAVE the patch by pressing the save button and confirming you want to save it. Once you have done that then it should consistently return to the settings that you last SAVEd. If you are using the unit connected to PC with HD500X active, then ensure you NEVER touch the physical controls or pedal on the unit - only adjust the values using HD500X EDIT - then when you are happy with you changes make sure you SAVE the patch by sending it back to the unit and wait for a few seconds to allow it to write the patch back to the units flash memory. Once you have done that then the unit should consistently recall the settings you last SAVEd. If you want to recall original settings or previous saved versions of patches then you can only do that if you backup your patch list when connected to HD500X EDIT. Obviously if you don't save the patch the original settings will be retained and can be recalled by re-selecting the patch. Once you have a backup then you can recall previous saved patches when you want. You can restore original factory settings on the unit by manually re-initializing it if necessary but you can't manually recall a previous patch if it has been overwritten unless you first saved a backup on your PC via HD500X edit.

Press the view screen to enter SYSTEM setup on your HD500x. Navigate to page 3 which shows INPUT 1 SOURCE and INPUT 2 SOURCE. I suggest you have INPUT 1 set to GUITAR (or VARIAX if you are using a JTV or Variax) and set INPUT 2 to just AUX. Next check that the PATCH you are using has nothing in the pre path - then just put your fx and amps for guitar in PATH A - and whatever fx you want for the keyboard in PATH B. Finally adjust the MIXER block to either blend the PATH A and PATH B signals into a combined stereo mix OR pan them hard right and hard left to separate the guitar and keyboard output. Adjust the mixer level for both PATH A and PATH B as needed - either boosting or lowering as necessary to balance the signals. Hope that helps.

Banjo Sound Popping Noise Jtv59
edstar1960 replied to edstar1960's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thanks for your input. I am glad to hear that the banjo model does match up to a real banjo in a band setting. So it is working as it should and there is no problem with my JTV and it's rendition of the banjo. Good to know! Thanks again! :) -

Distortion /overdrive tone too compressed and too digital
edstar1960 replied to scias23's topic in POD HD
There are a lot of parameters that affect the sound. You need to have a look at all the DEP parameters for the AMP and CAB. Plus you also need to adjust the values on the SCREAMER or TUBE DRIVE to get the effect you want. If you are happy with the amp sound on its own then I suggest you tweak the settings on the SCREAMER or TUBE DRIVE to see if you can get the sound you are after. Perhaps you just need to lower the output and/or drive of each one? I have recently found out from other threads on this forum that the RESONANCE parameter default of 50% is not ideal and that for live use starting with a setting of 0% along with a THUMP value of 20 to 25% may produce a more realistic sound. Also the MASTER parameter for the amp in the DEP section may need adjusting - try reducing the value to see what that does. Experiment with these things one at a time to see how they affect the sound. -
You need to turn the LOOPER off to use the footswitches for individual effects. If the LOOPER is active then those switches operate the LOOPER. You enter LOOPER mode by pressing the foot switch labelled LOOPER. You exit by pressing the same button.

Updated the Firmware on my HD500 - now really quiet A Channel?
edstar1960 replied to Elexorien's topic in POD HD
Sounds like it could either be a fault with the HD500 or the DT25 L6 Link sockets or connections. I think you should contact Line 6 support directly and raise a ticket with them and they will be able to help you trouble shoot it and tell you if you need to send the HD500 or the DT25 in for repair. Good luck. -
Updated the Firmware on my HD500 - now really quiet A Channel?
edstar1960 replied to Elexorien's topic in POD HD
Are you referring to the sound level out of your DT25 channel A when your HD500 is connected via Line 6 Link? If that is the case, then what happens if you use the DT25 stand alone and plug your guitar directly into it and swap between channel A and channel B? Does channel A still sound much quieter? I suggest setting channel A and channel B so that they use the same model, mode and have the same settings so you can make a direct A/B comparison. If channel A on the DT25 sounds quieter when used stand alone then it is a problem with the DT25. If channel A only sounds quieter when used with the HD500 connected via Line6 link then it could be a fault with your HD500 or possibly your Line6 Link XLR cable or possibly the Line6 Link socket on the DT25. -
In the Uk the music retailers usually ship items over a certain price for free. The JTVs include free shipping. This would only be free shipping within UK.

I agree with Nico too. I think every electric guitar does have it's own unique voice but not everyone will be able to hear the subtle differences. Some people who have many years experience and a highly trained ear will be able to hear differences that most will never hear. For example. my wife thinks every electric guitar sounds the same so why would I ever want more than 1? Fortunately I have won that argument! LOL ;) I don't understand how the body wood interacts with the string to produce a different tone through the magnetic pick ups but somehow that does seem to happen because the same pickups mounted on different guitars do sound different. I have a custom built strat style guitar with a mahogany body and a quilted maple veneer top, it has a birds eye maple neck and an ebony fingerboard. It has a vintage strat style trem. I put strat pick ups on it and it does not sound identical to my Fender USA strat, or my Fender Mexican Strat. It sounds like a trem guitar with single coil pickups but it does not sound like a strat. It has it's own voice. If the tone was 100% down to the pick ups then it should sound just like a strat - so there is certainly more involved in the final output tone. What exactly is involved and is picked up and interpreted by the pickups is something the scientists will know. I really don't know enough about it. I don't understand why the same pickup mounted on two different guitar bodies will produce a different final tone when all it is doing is picking up the vibration of a metal string interfering with its magnetic field. I don't understand how the acoustic qualities of the electric guitar can get transferred through the pick ups - but from experience it seems that they do. Another thing that make a difference to strat trem guitars is the trem block - I originally had a brass block on mine and I changed it for a steel one and I could clearly hear the difference. Also the bridge saddles make a big difference for strats and tele's. I put together a tele style guitar from parts bought on the internet - but it didn't sparkle like my Fender Mexican Tele - I double checked the bridge components and discovered that the saddles were chrome covered zinc and not solid steel - so I swapped them for solid steel and wow, what a difference that made - suddenly the missing sparkle was there. Again, I don't understand how these tonal changes could be picked up and transferred via the pick ups - but they were! There are a whole host of things that contribute to the electric guitars final tone through the pick ups. I can't explain it. :)

I have seen plenty of JTV deals in the UK - pretty much everywhere has reduced the JTV range price from £1100 down to £659. And that's not only on STOCK items but on pre-order too. Seems like they are keen to shift existing JTV stock from distributors.

This thread has become very deep ... but while we are on the subject of wood and pick ups I thought I would share this....I have a friend who is a very experienced luthier and he has put together some excellent sounding guitars comprised of the cheapest and worthless wood and laminates and cheap pickups. He has bought cheap Chinese made clone guitars for less than £90, and with a little bit of TLC and a careful setup, has managed to get them singing and sounding as nice as his USA made Fender strat. He has even played these guitars to an audience of guitar players alongside people playing an assortment of classic fender strat guitars with top of the range customised pickups and they have been amazed at just how good his cheap guitar with cheap pickups actually sounds when played through the same amp and fx because it sounds comparable to their very expensive guitars. He doesn't believe the hype around expensive pick ups and therefore will only buy cheap pick ups because he believes the expensive ones are a waste of his money - sure they sound different - but it's only a matter of tone and resonant frequencies - and each and every pickup is just copper wire wrapped around a magnet or magnets - and he has shown many times to himself and his experienced guitar playing friends that when compared played through the same fx and amps that they don't come up short. The same with the body woods - he has guitars made out of utter junk but they sound great and play great because they have been set up correctly. Sure they don't sound exactly the same as a top of the range Gibson or Fender - but they don't sound worse or better - just different but still close in sound - personal taste determines which sound we each prefer. One example of a famous home made guitar, not built by an experienced luthier or using expensive tonewoods or pickups, is the red special built by Brian May of Queen. I have recently bought a couple of Vintage V100 guitars brand new - they needed to be setup correctly and did not have the best hardware or best finishes - but they are very playable and sound great. They are very cheap LP style guitars. I compared them to my actual Gibson LP Standard and made some demo recordings to see if they could easily be identified and asked my friends to listen and pick out the Gibson. Well they were so close in sound that it was almost impossible to tell them apart. These experiences have shown me that it's not the name on the guitar headstock, or the make of pick ups or the body or neck woods that make an electric guitar sound good, or just because an electric guitar has a low price tag that it is necessarily going to sound like lollipop. Any electric guitar that is set up correctly has the potential to sound great through amps and fx regardless of what it is made of or the hardware on it. :)

Tone Of Vdi Vs 1/4"
edstar1960 replied to chuskey's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Update! I have revised my earlier entry regarding test results as today I discovered I had inadvertently left the GUITAR IN switch set to PAD on my HD500 !! I repeated the tests with it set to NORMAL and I now get similar levels with VDI and 1/4" as expected - so in my case it was USER ERROR. Just shows that even with years of experience with these units you can still make an obvious mistake. Apologies everyone! :) Why agordon is experiencing a weaker VDI signal still remains to be explained. -
Tone Of Vdi Vs 1/4"
edstar1960 replied to chuskey's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
My trem is almost set so it's touching the body and it only moves a tiny amount when I bend a string. Not quite completely locked down with spring tension but not far off.
