Well, this thread is almost a year old, so...

I walked into guitar center today asking about a power conditioner and the guy instead talked me into getting an EBTech Hum X. Brought it home and no difference. I'm going again later tonight and exchanging it for the power conditioner I wanted to originally get

I get the same thing no matter what I'm plugging into or with what cable, at least at my house. I'm thinking about getting a power conditioner to see if that helps..

podhd500x arrived today, do i need to install firnware?
AlexKenivel replied to elvissideburns84's topic in POD HD
When you connect "it" to update firmware, it doesn't matter what the output settings are. Only when trying to get sound out. Just use the USB cable to connect to your computer, download the nessicary drivers and software, and you don't necessarily need to, but I would update the firmware to get all the newer options -
Looper is the switch just to the right of FS4

Well, digital clipping sounds much more nasty than fizzy highs. Also, I plug my pod into my M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface, which has a small meter that tells me when I'm clipping. I use the headphone out from my interface (because the headphone output on my pod doesn't work properly) to initially make a patch (usually in the middle of the night) and further edit later through my Alto TS112a at loud volumes. And I'll post more details about my chain when I can Edit: Here goes

What are your input impedance settings? What are you using to amplify your sound? As for post EQ, the Parametric EQ is what I use. The Mid Focus is good too, but the PEQ is very transparent at its default settings. Like the MF, the PEQ tames highs, lows, but has a bonus frequency sweep and level. And just for fun I thought I'd share my current high gain djenty settings. I'm on a 7 in drop A with DiMarzio Ionizers, inputs at Auto/Guitar/Mic, a screamer cutting bass and shaping tone before the 5150 with gain at 45%, low bass, resonance, presence and treble settings, mids at about 70%, into the Treadplate Cab with the 57on and the PEQs Highs set to 35%.

It's a known bug and I have the same issue. I don't use the edit program too much, but pressing the physical save button is a common workaround

I've noticed the JC is a little on the quiet side, but nothing the mixer and EQs couldn't fix
-
And don't forget the Elektrik amp! It's very usable as well even though it's one the original L6 amps
-
Is there a question in here?

I'd say go for it. My main gainy tone is the Panama/big bottom dual amps. I love the shiva and the 2204 as well. The octone is just plain fun

Monkey only gives the option to configure Podxt - I own a HD500!
AlexKenivel replied to mjs367's topic in POD HD
Monkey only does that for me when the pod isn't connected... Maybe try a different usb port? -
I like pairing a fuzz with an OD to get that meaty buzz

Yeah that totally threw me for a loop at first

A lot of the general info I got was from Meambobbo, Fortiori Johnny, hurghanico, pfsmith0, and others I forget.. For a while I've been using dual amps to phase out unwanted frequencies but I'm trying to do this with the single amp now and EQs. Experiment, tinker, tweak over and over, but be sure to give your ears a rest every once in a while. Design presets at LOUD volumes. Done what before exactly? Links like Custom tone? No.. I used to set up my GEQ to cut everything below 100hz and above a variable amount (usually in the 8khz range or around there I think) to simulate how guitar speakers cut the extreme high and low frequencies but pickups had nothing to do with it.. Now a days I don't really bother with the GEQ anymore, and rely on the Low Cut parameter and EQs post amp

Awesome? Yes. Probable? Doubt it. There's a lot of cool ideas floating around, but I don't think the current HD series will see many improvements, at least not anytime soon

How to not blow up my cab with a power amp and HD500
AlexKenivel replied to Janicke92's topic in POD HD
I don't know anything about wiring cabs in stereo but I know that as far as the ohms go, it doesn't matter what the speakers say on them, but more how they're wired. As far as using a poweramp, I'd first see how loud it gets, put your Pods volume on 50% and poweramp volume on 0. Make some guitar noise and turn up the poweramp dial until it gets uncomfortably loud. If you max out the channel and it's not too loud for you, then turn up the pod more. You might be surprised and it won't be loud enough to damage anything at all, but at the same time, you might realize that you've got way more headroom than you need. If that's the case, then I'd keep my Pods master volume pretty high and set the poweramp to as loud as I need, that way I won't have to worry about something bumping the Pods master volume knob and causing damage -
How to not blow up my cab with a power amp and HD500
AlexKenivel replied to Janicke92's topic in POD HD
Yep, and to even get that full 1000w you'd need to have a 4ohm cab and bridge the two channels. Even if you do that, start quiet and work your way up to the volume you need. The rest is what we call headroom. -
It's not a device to use with a guitar amp, it's a device to emulate a guitar amp and speaker, so you need a full range speaker to get the full, unadulterated (mostly) picture. I've been using my 500x through amp/cab for almost a year now because I too was unhappy with my high gain tones through an active PA speaker. Through lots of recording attempts and advice from this forum and others, I had found a way to carve out better high gain sounds. So I decided to get an Alto TS112a and those recording tones translate very well.

How to not blow up my cab with a power amp and HD500
AlexKenivel replied to Janicke92's topic in POD HD
I had a Carvin dcm1000 running a 4x12. how much wattage you are getting is determined by the ohm rating of your cab. My cab was wired 8 Ohms so I couldn't draw 1000 wats while both channels were bridged. I recently had my eye on a crown XLS 1000 to replace the old heavy Carvin. But decided to get a wedge instead. but to answer your initial question, just don't turn it up so loud that you blow your cab -
If you haven't already, familiarize yourself with the EQ effects to cut unwanted frequencies

Get the 500x so you have a way to switch effects.. As far as the M9 vs the 500x, say even if you get the 500x and don't care about the amp models, you might stumble upon them by mistake and find sounds you enjoy. At that point you could just run the Pod into the fx return of the amp head you have and get the best of both worlds, different amp flavors pushing the air through your real cab. I did it this way for almost a year. Now I have an Alto TS112a and I'm not going back!

HD500X Amp Model Tones/EQ(first plug in with the Band.)
AlexKenivel replied to Old-Rocker's topic in POD HD
A piece of advice; if you're plugging into a power amp and it doesn't have a master pot, the Master Volume knob on the Pod becomes the control for the power amp. If plugging into a power amp with no volume control (like an FX return on an amp head) you should start with the master volume all the way down
