I use Ownhammer IRs these days, but I really recommend “cutting your teeth†on the stock cabs as they can be made to sound good and going through the learning curve with them will help you establish what you are looking to hear in an IR. Which will save you time and money when (if) you jump down the IR rabbit hole. Check out this video, it kind of changed the whole world for me as far as the stock cabs go:

WOW! The new Placater and Cali Texas Ch2 amps & FX.....
Verne-Bunsen replied to GuitarjonSDS's topic in Helix
Hear, hear, what an update it was. I always enjoy your videos, thanks Jon! -
Hear, hear. When I was younger and had all the time in the world to commit to playing guitar, I had a blast but could only afford pretty basic gear. Fast forward to a time in my life where I can afford amazing toys like Helix and I’m lucky if I can spend a few hours a week with it. Ah, the great ironies of life! Still and all, a truly amazing time to be a guitar player.

Earthquaker Devices Bit Commander in an FX Loop! At least, that’s how I do it. Haven’t found anything even remotely close in Helix.

The max delay time on the Elephant Man is 500ms, and tapping in a bpm that results in longer delay than that with your division setting will be “recalculated†to a setting that is both possible and on-beat. This function has the appearance of “ignoring†the division setting as you describe. I suspect this is what you’re up against. I first experienced it in 2.30, so it’s been around at least that long.

Clean tone was decent-ish, the dirty stuff left a lot to be desired. It's tough to judge by these videos, but given what I see there I can't imagine springing for that with Helix LT at the same price point. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a happy Helix owner posting on the Helix forum... I'd love to see them continue to refine their technology and put out something that pushes the envelope!
-
I am also lacking in the 2.50 department, but that sounds really nice.
-
Excellent demonstration, thank you! They all sounded fantastic, but I have to say that “Glitz†stood out and has me quite excited now...

If you are particularly partial to that pedal, I'd recommend holding on to it until you can evaluate the Helix offerings for yourself. There is a Big Muff model in Helix, but it may or may not fit the bill for you. The good news is Helix takes fuzz in the FX Loops very well. I run an Earthquaker Erupter and Bit Commander in mine.
-
Would they? Seems like using Helix with a real amp and/or cab is fairly common. Haven't seen any brick $hitting in any related discussions.

The FreqOut is a very cool pedal, but even it can’t do impossible stuff. It wrings out every last drop of sustain your guitar will give it and makes your guitar sound convincingly like it’s feeding back, but when the string vibration decays the sound stops. Abruptly.

I’m stoked for the reverbs and the Lonestar. Also, I’ve been hearing good things about the Dimension chorus for a very long time, but have never played with it myself. I think I’m looking forward to checking that out too!

What's the length of my pants got to do with anything?
-
I'm very happy with where all of my go-to patches are with the present offerings, I play more than I tweak lately, but I look very forward to incorporating the new reverbs and to checking out the Lonestar model!

In reviewing this thread (I'm assuming that our theoretical scenario is referring to this thread) I didn't see any snark directed at the OP. I did see some good advice from guys who have managed to make the most of the Helix tuner: Check the tuner input setting, use the neck pickup, roll off the tone, try the 12th fret harmonic. The OPs solution: keeping his TU3 tuner. Good thinking, and props to the OP for his practicality. The first snark I saw was actually directed at the people who claim the tuner is usable and looked like this: Such condescension toward people with a different experience! I know, right?
-
Far be it from me to tell anyone what they can or can't discuss, but I will say it seems to me that at this point we have collected enough data to determine the effectivenes of the "Endless Moaning" approach to resolving the tuner issues. Another option, and one that has worked well for folks who have had issues with the fuzzes, reverbs, stock cabs and other features, has been to find something that you DO like, use it in place of the thing that you DON'T like, and thus turn your frown upside down. It feels good to complain and vent, I get it, but at some point it also feels good to eliminate your problem using the options available to you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
“I want...â€, “Why should we have to...â€, “They need to...â€, “I shouldn’t have to...†It’s been established that the tuner doesn’t work for everyone. Like the fuzzes. And the reverbs. And the stock cabs. Un-trigger yourself, grab a tuner you like, and get on with it.

I'm 5000 miles away from my Helix for the next couple of weeks so, you know, no hurry guys  Seriously though, I do look forward to reading the feedback here when it is unleashed!

Another happy Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80ohm user here.

I think you are describing a basic 4CM (4-Cable Method) configuration: Guitar -> Helix Input <Front-of-Amp effects> Helix FX Loop Send -> Amp Input Amp Effect Loop Send -> Helix FX Loop Return <Effect Loop Effects> Helix Output -> Amp Effect Loop Return

Wish granted: Cosmos Echo is an RE-201.

The only time I really find myself wishing for "Undo" is when I'm using the joystick to navigate from one block to another and accidentally rotate it while on a block in between, changing the selection in that block. You can go switch it back but all of the settings are restored to default. D'oh!

How is your master volume set? Consider backing off on the pre-amp gain, cranking the master, and hit the front with a Minotaur or Timmy for more gain.
-
Yeah! And the matching cab will have a parameter for adjusting how far open the case is!

Paul Gilbert is a giant among giants, no doubt. Tough to say how much of it was a function of the recording, but it is certainly a good example of “less is more†with gain and compression. Phil all but disappeared!
