    Helix 2.9

I personally find this trip in to the weeds to be preferable to the wailing and gnashing of teeth usually found in update threads.

    Helix 2.9

Meters, clip indicators and IR assignment by name?
  3. I use two PC+ with Helix, sounds sublime! I simply use the left and right XLR outputs from Helix.
  4. You might decide you want to, but you certainly would not have to.
  5. I think there is merit to both sides of this argument. Yes, the idiosyncrasies of human hearing require that the ears be used to match perceived volume levels. Also yes, some sort of reference is needed so that you are using your ears to set levels at a point that makes some kind of sense rather than just wherever your volume settings happen to land. For my part, I have a patch that consists simply of a 3-Note Generator that I’ve set to hit my DAW at -18dB. When setting levels in a new patch, I use that as a reference to set my squeaky clean level and then set other levels by ear with the squeaky clean sound as a reference. In this way, I know that my levels are in an appropriate range for interfacing with other equipment because my DAW told me, and I know that they will have the desired perceived volume relative to each other because my ears told me. It’s a process that helps the world make sense for me.

    Amp volume

This. "Master Volume" controls how hard you are driving the output stage of the amplifier in the same way that "Drive" controls how hard you drive the preamp, so it is a big tone lever.
  7. I do a whole lot of selling gear to buy gear. I consider my equipment to be a kind of savings account for future purchases..... Good luck!
  8. If you wait long enough, the thing after the next thing will be just around the corner. If you want to play before you die, pull the trigger and enjoy yourself.
  9. When is the next update coming? -> What’s taking so long? -> The tentative release date has passed, why are they denying us our update? -> Let everybody be beta testers, just put it out already! -> OMG they released it and it is imperfect! -> When is the next update coming? It’s the Circle of Life!
  10. That’s where I’m at. All the shenanigans and goings-on have me waiting things out. Perhaps a 2.8.1 will be forthcoming?
  11. Thanks! I use Bayerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 ohms for headphone monitoring, and I have found that things that sound good in the PC+ cabs sound good in the headphones and vice versa. I have no difficulty going between the two. And you are correct, there is no headphone-out on the PowerCab; I plug the headphones in to Helix with an IR loaded. All of my patches are built with an IR in Helix, and if want to use the PowerCab speaker sims then I just turn it off. As for the volume, I simply find it more convenient to set the overall volume with the Helix volume than to adjust it separately on both cabs. I can’t say I hear any difference in tone either way, so convenience is the only consideration there as far as I’m concerned.
  12. For whatever it’s worth, I succumbed to the GAS Attack and bought one. Gonna stock up on epi pens and I’ll report back...
  13. This is an excellent and exciting feature. When I use snapshots, it is generally to change multiple parameters to achieve a given level of gain. But I don’t necessarily want it to turn my tremolo and reverb on or off, for instance. I just want those to stay on or off, where ever I have them. I haven’t really embraced snapshots because of this, but with this feature it will fit the way I use Helix much better. Sweet.
  14. It would be great if it was just a setting issue, I’d forgotten that the joystick behaviour was tinkered with in the update.
  15. I had a joystick failure on my first Helix, and as datacommando says, it happens very suddenly. No indications of impending failure, it just works one second and not the next. The correlation with the 2.8 update could be coincidental.
  16. I’m re-resurrecting this semi-necro thread, for which I am semi-apologetic, but I have to change my vote. Previously I stated that I left the pad off even though I liked it in some applications, because it is not selectable per-preset. My position has changed. These days I leave the input pad on all the time because I find that it actually makes my input signal hit the amp more like I think it should. Lemmee ‘splain. I do a lot of squeaky clean playing and have been consistently surprised at how far back I’m having to dial master and drive levels to keep amps like the Twin Reverb and Deluxe Reverb from breaking up. These are amps I’m familiar with and I have some idea of how my guitars hit them, and they just seem to break up way too early. With the input pad on though, suddenly things are more in line. To me it plays more like having turned an input boost off than turning a pad on, if that makes sense. Yes, if you build a patch with the pad off and then turn it on, then everything sounds wimpy and anemic. But if you build it from the ground up with it on, then everything is there. More-so even, because you don’t have to choke the amp to keep it clean. IMHO, YMMV, etc, etc...
  17. Aww man, just when I thought I had my IR situation all squared away.....
  18. I haven’t updated yet and so can’t speak with direct experience, but the guys in this video seem to do a good job of breaking down the Tone Sovereign and Heir Apparent:
  19. Great video, thanks HO!
  20. I’m out if town so it’ll be a week and a half or so before I get to update. But I’m really, really, really excited about the King of Tone model. If you care to divulge details, how is the KoT configured in Helix? Do you know which version/mods it models? Does it combine the two sides into one block or do you run two blocks for that?
  21. Now that sounds awesome! The whole accidentally-rotating-the-joystick thing has been my bane...
  22. No, I’m pretty sure it’s NFL: Efilnikcufecin!
  23. As much as I don’t want to get any of the ranty/moany parts of this thread on me, I think it is pretty funny that they referenced the Spring 2019 2.8 release. That’s gold, Jerry! Gold!
