Helix Modelled Pedals vs Real Pedals with the same settings
datacommando replied to drb1982's topic in Helix
Well, it wasn’t “still going” until you resurrected a thread that expired one and a half years back. Amazing! How time flies, it seems like only yesterday. Where have you been? -
Hi, Helix Native is not immediately very intuitive when it comes to Save and Export. When you export a preset, such as a new one that you have just created, Helix Native exports it in it’s last saved state, (meaning an empty blank new preset), which is exactly where you started. You have to save the changes first, before export, as noted by “rd2rk” in the post above. I would suggest that you study the information given in the Helix Native Pilot’s Guide page 23 and page 33 https://line6.com/data/6/0a020a4179ea61fd2e9472da7/application/pdf/Helix Native 3.15 Pilot's Guide - English .pdf Quote: ”Using the Preset panel’s Export command makes a copy of the selected library preset in its last-saved state and saves it to your hard drive. If you wish to save the tone currently in use within the plugin’s Signal Flow, with all edited settings intact, use the File menu - Save options” Native also has “Help” built-in. Simply click the Question Mark icon in the lower left corner of the window. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi, No tricks. The simple solution, and the answer that most people don’t like to hear is - consult the manual - it is your friend. Helix 3.0 Owner’s Manual - Rev F - English - Page 20 Moving Split & Merge Blocks for More Parallel Routings https://line6.com/data/6/0a020a3f041b611d61cac763b/application/pdf/Helix 3.0 Owner's Manual - Rev F - English .pdf if reading is not your thing - try a video. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi, There doesn’t appear to have been any recent activity by “mattzz”, (April 2021), but this looks to be promoted as a self build project. To try to attract his attention, it may be better to quote one of his posts, or your request could just lie here unanswered. If you don’t manage to get a reply, and require a programmable 3 switch MIDI box you could buy the Disaster Area MIDI Baby 3 available in Germany from: https://www.loopersparadise.de/de/index.php?p=3062 or https://www.musik-produktiv.com/gb/disaster-area-designs-midi-baby-3.html or from the U.K. https://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/guitar-pedals/aby-switchers/disaster-area-midi-baby-3 Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi, Well, it is happening to you - Great first post - rule #1 of Helix club: “Never update the firmware the day before an important gig”. Also, when seeking assistance from other group users it’s a really big help to know as much as possible about exactly which HX hardware unit, you are trying to update, along with your computer and OS. I really am going to stop doing this, but save me from a lot of typing, please read my response and instructions in this thread: - link. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi Scott, Sub Zero is Gear4Music’s own brand, surely they could have answered all you questions about this product directly. I have always found them to be very helpful on the occasions I have bought things from them. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Oops! Missed that one - eek! ;-)

Hi, I’m not entirely sure, but If you are on a Mac Studio, it may depend on whether you have the M1 MAX or M1 ULTRA installed. Although I haven’t seen any reports of those models not being able to use Native. I’m still holding back on Catalina and everything works fine. IIRC, the download page for the Mac version of Native lists Monterey as being compatible, and I would expect that the OS handles the installation just the same as other versions - you should find Native in the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components . As for migrating to the new machine, you need to hit the “SUPPORT” menu tab at the top of this page. Next you should see an icon in red (which represents you when logged in) and it drops down a menu where you select “Authorised Devices” from under the Hardware & Software section. From the next page you can then de-authorise your old machine and authorise the new Mac Studio. AFAIK, you can have 11 lifetime devices registered. If you run out, raise a ticket with Customer Support to have it reset. I have not had to do this with Native, but have previously done this with hardware units, simply enough really. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Yep, we all start out with good intentions for the management of wiring etc. No matter what, it always seems to end up like a mad woman’s knitting! ;-)

Hi, If that represents you DI signal, then it should be good enough, in fact anywhere in the region of -36 to -12db is fine. I think many people don’t get a signal as hot as you have on the DI. There are many threads on here where people have said the their USB dry input is very low. I use my Helix floor and Native for re-amping and always thought the DI was way down but in my experience it works just fine - the trick is to avoid the noise floor and avoid digital clipping. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi, Yes, it looks to me as if you have your copy of Helix Native set for HX Effects hardware compatibility mode. HX Effects does not have amp and cab models. Anyhow, set the compatibility mode to either suit your hardware device, or turn the mode "off" then you will notice between the column of preset files and the panel above which reads "SETLIST" in yellow, there will be another panel showing a folder icon and name in yellow text, e.g.: FACTORY 1, FACTORY 2, USER1, USER 2, USER 3, USER 4, USER 5 and finally TEMPLATES. WARNING: If you set the compatibility mode to "Off" all preset slots will be blank and rather than the folder names I indicated above they will call be listed as Setlist 1 through 8. Best set it to match your hardware to avoid any more surprises. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi, Mess around with this patch (Reamp+TalkBox.hlx) to see if its works for you. You guitar from the DAW comes in on USB 7 to path 1A. Change the amp and cab and FX to whatever you like best. The important bit is the FX Loop send to your hardware talk box (instrument level) and then the Mic you use with Talk tube comes in on path 1B the gain block is off - it's just there to split the path) and goes into the cab, and your wet FX , then out on Multi which sends USB 1&2 processed audio back to the DAW to be recorded on USB 1&2. Hope this helps/makes sense. Reamp+TalkBox.hlx

Hi, If this is a "real" hardware talk box, then the post from "brue58ski" above seems to cover getting the Mic input signal sorted out. It's just that you mention you want to re-amp some old solos, which I guess you will be playing back from a DAW on your computer? If that's the case you will need to set your old recorded guitar signal to play back out on USB 7 and set the Helix input to USB 7. Set the Helix Output to USB 1&2 and enable a track in your DAW to record the new talk box version fully processed. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Studio One / Kontakt instruments MIDI control via Helix
datacommando replied to narkaor's topic in Helix
Hi, They way my set up is rigged is to use the Helix floor as the audio interface using USB into my Mac running Logic Pro. I have a pair if 8” Tannoy Reveal powered speaker connected to the Helix XLR outputs for zero latency monitoring. My Arturia KeyLab 61 is patched into an XTouch Universal MIDI controller, via USB into the Mac and Logic. The XTouch manages the required automation of channels, faders etc, and the KeyLab plays the V Collection, UVI Synth Anthology, Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol, and Spitfire audio sample libraries among many other things. All guitars/bass/acoustic/electric and microphones connect directly into the Helix for recording over USB and Helix Native is for re-amping and extra fx as required. I also have some very old classic rack mounted synth modules from Roland, Yamaha and Kawai, outboard multi effects, drum machines and Akai S950 sampler gathering dust over in the corner. Very simple but efficient and used daily. It just works. Hope this helps/makes sense. -
Hi, Short answer - No. Both of the supplied presets contain dual paths with an amp and cab in each, plus a whole bunch of other dynamics and EQ stuff. My guess is it would be possible to strip out the second path, but it would possibly detrimental to the overall sound, which is what you are chasing. See pic. I’m not in the studio until tomorrow (it’s midnight here), and I haven’t been able to to check out the 2 presets in my Helix to see how much the tone changes when you switch off one path. Although I did discover today in another post on here there is a web site that will allow you to view various Preset files to see how they built. Check it out here (it's where the screen grab above came from): https://hxview.netlify.app Load up the Dingwall.hlx files and view them for yourself, and then if you think you may be able to cope with the single top path, report back and when I get into the studio tomorrow I can strip out the extra blocks. No guarantee that it will be acceptable, but worth a shot. Hope this helps/makes sense.

That viewer seem to be a lot more reliable than another option which someone posted a while back. The other was a real cludge job that didn't even show the correct output selection. This looks interesting as it also show the DSP load on each block - a nice touch! Thanks for linking that.

Very much along a similar line to Helix Help is this one - check it out. https://www.fluidsolo.com/patchexchange/view-models/Distortion-Pedals,d Also, if you wish to reacquaint yourself with the old school manuals with the “Model Gallery” section, you could check out these pdf docs for the PODxt Live, Model Packs and GearBox available here: https://uk.line6.com/support/manuals/podxtlive/ Hope this helps/makes sense.

The science behind a wah pedal is quite simple, as pointed out by “craiganderton” in his post above. Buy his “Big Book of Tricks” for lots of other interesting stuff. Meanwhile - here’s a video example of a guy creating a wah inside a DAW - same technique with a parametric EQ being swept. Hope this helps/makes sense.

To save me from a lot of typing, please read my response and instructions in this thead: - link. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hey, no problem. It’s easily done - something that I have done many times. Oops!

Yep, that would be the way to do it with a full Helix, but the OP is using a HX Stomp, which uses 3&4 for unprocessed audio, and USB 5&6 are for re-amping back through the hardware. The OP will be using Native to re-amp and I would guess that makes those inputs redundant. In the Owner’s Manual, Eric has been his usual cryptic self and noted that USB 7&8 are “The never-ending abyss (reserved for future use”. Not sure what he has planned for that - maybe it will be revealed in the monster v3.2 Firmware update. ;-)

Hi, There are many ways you could approach this, but the most simple way to get your optimal guitar signal into your DAW, is to just use the HX Stomp. Take your processed stereo guitar signal into the DAW on USB 1&2, and simultaneously a DI of the dry unaffected audio into another channel recording from USB 3 (or 4). That way you can playback the direct injected sound while using the HX Native plug-in to re-amp as many time as you like. All this without having to tie up any other hardware. Easy, and painless. There is a whole section on using your Stomp as an audio interface in the HX Stomp 3.0 Owner’s Manual on pages 56-58. https://line6.com/data/6/0a020a418962611d636e7c51b/application/pdf/HX Stomp 3.0 Owner's Manual - Rev D - English .pdf (also available in French, German and Japanese) Now, you will probably be thinking, “why did I spend all this money on the Focusrite Clarett and a Direct Box?” Well the DI box is always a handy tool to have in the studio, or playing live, as a hum killer etc., but using the Stomp should negate it’s use unless you have a particular nasty power supply. You didn’t mention which version of the Focusrite you have, be it the Octo, 4 or 2 or plus Pre model. Each do a particularly fine job of getting your sound into a computer studio. Many Helix users also have a Focusrite AI (I used a Saffire for many years) and you can take the audio out from the Stomp into the front of your Clarett and then into the DAW. This way would include another round of DA/AD conversion, but most people wouldn’t really notice. The downside of this method is that you would need to also utilise another Stomp output (Send) for the dry audio to feed the Clarett. These are a couple of options, and really only you can decide what is the best workflow for you. As I said earlier, I was a long time user of the Focusrite Saffire for the FireWire capability. When I changed my Mac FireWire was no longer supported, and since then for the past 6 years I have used my Helix floor on a daily basis for getting audio into Logic with the Native plug-in. It just works, but I’m a studio rat, therefore my needs could be completely different to yours. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Hi, When it comes to this sort of thing everyone has to go with what works for them - as usual, where the Helix family of products is involved, there are no rules. Just go with the flow. :-)

Hi Guido, You might want to investigate using the Studio Tube Preamp (based on a Requisite Y7 mic preamp), also an EQ block. Then add a LA Studio Compressor, chorus, delay and dynamic reverb. That should give you a place to start. You can add an acoustic guitar IR if you wish - try it and see how this works for you. I have used this setup for recording with my Fishman Rare Earth Blend equipped acoustic (one path for the pickup and the other for the mic), and another guitar with a K&K Pure (internal contact transducer) system. It is also the starting point for when I am only using condenser mics. You will need to mess around to get it how it suits you, and works with your instrument(s). There are many Helix/HX owners using acoustic guitars and getting great results. Hope this helps/makes sense.

True, but someone on TGP said it may be worth him losing a $500 bet to keep a lid on any new Helix 2 release. Eric’s reply: ”It probably is worth $500, but I won't lose that bet.” https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/any-indication-of-a-line6-helix-ii-coming-soon.2339591/page-7#post-34747401 But, hey!
