I wonder what L6 has in store for Helix and Summer NAMM?
Lachdanan0121 replied to Lachdanan0121's topic in Helix
Eh, I guess you guys are right about Summer NAMM. Still would be nice to have some of the stuff in my original post addressed, or even better implemented in the next big FW updates. -
I am sure there will be new amps/cabs/effects so I won't really mention them, lots of threads on that. I am mainly speaking about function/feature upgrades. I hope to see one of the following, if not more: (in no particular order) 1. Multiple split paths along signal chains, instead of the "one" you get now. 2. Some kind of indicator that lets you know if you are "clipping" going into the input of any given FX block in the signal chain. I know some have asked for signal meter monitoring, which would cover this I think. 3. Multiple mic positioning for the HX cabs. Perhaps mic angle as well, but I would be happy with a positioning at first. (not just distance) 4. HX reverbs. (this is an upgrade, and not just more FX) including mono options. 5. Guitar input pad moved to per preset system. 6. I know others are wanting more Variax stuff, but I am not a Variax user so I can't really comment on that. I am pretty sure that at least some of this is possible, and I think would be things many users would like. I have voted on all the idealscales that are related to these features... I think. :) I am sure Helix Native will be at Summer NAMM, I am excited about that too. I am gonna grab that as soon as it hits the market. Post if I missed something that you may think may be at least addressed at Summer NAMM.

I don't use the presets much. The Helix can seem overwhelming at first, and I come from a mixing background as well. But it is so intuitive it really helps make up for it. Since about 2 weeks into it I have been building all my patches from scratch. Going on about 9 months now. That said I have read in threads here that the factory presets have been significantly improved since initial release. If you are a LT owner then you all your presets are 2.20 or 2.21 firmware. When the unit first launched the presets were pretty bad, and that is largely where a lot of the criticism is directed.

Yes, actual studio monitors are FRFR. But there are also PA type FRFR. Which is what most mean when they say FRFR in these forums. They are even making FRFR cabs these days. Some combo amps are "FRFR." Home, or studio.... studio monitors will work great, provided you dont get the cheapest. Studio monitors arent apt for LIVE performance. That is where the PA type, or amp shine.

Since it hasn't been asked... Is this a case of trails "off" on the high gain, and "on" on the cleans? Please double check before replying with an answer.

I see some here saying they were hearing double guitar signal when recording. This is due to a lack of understanding on setting up your DAW, or a technical limitation of your DAW, however any decent DAW should be able to handle this without much issue. Here is how I do it. Guitar - Helix Rack (it is my audio interface) PC FL Studio. Helix Rack - XLR - Studio Monitors (Event Bas 20/20) I have a patch that sounds relatively decent for the track I am recording onto. This way I can have a wet monitor (with amp/FX) with no perceivable latency. I send to FL Studio through USB 7 a dry recording (I always ReAmp). I send the dry recording to FLS intended mixer channel. (lets say mixer channel 30 for this example) I de-route that mixer channel 30 from going to the master channel. Essentially what is happening is I am muting my recorded guitar signal.. It is muted AFTER the recording, but before that recording is sent to the master channel, and out the USB 1&2, and thus the speakers with the rest of the mix. What I hear is the wet monitor along with the mix. (what isn't being recorded) I hear no duplicate sound, I get a dry recording, I hear a relatively latency free wet monitor. I get great tones. Any decent DAW should have a similar ability to mute the incoming track after the recording, but before the audio is sent back out the master. To the OP as far as the tone problem with Studio monitors, and translation to home theater... Well this. 1. Home theaters don't translate well for guitar tones, especially on their own. Full mixes are one thing, but just guitar... not so much. 2. The KRK Rockit studio monitors are entry level, and not really FRFR. They are overhyped. Unless you happen to have the VXT series, which is a little better, but I reckon you are using the Rockits. If so, I would look at some other monitoring system for a long term solution. I mean no offense by this post, but I value the information over cordiality. Thus, this is how I respond.

Helix Post 2.20 update, USB connection keeps dropping
Lachdanan0121 replied to jbright44's topic in Helix
Um yes, that should be a sticky. Hey Jbright44, there is a thread here for common trouble shooting steps, if you would locate it, and copy/paste this thread link in it, that would at least be something. -
Hey guys, Thanks for the recommendation! I haven't tried Epic out until tonight. I was ReAmping some lead guitar parts, and I was using the PV Panama which sounded semi-good, (good enough to wet monitor with for the time being) then while having a looping signal sent through I was able to choose amps freely. I changed a couple, and decided I would go to "Epic" per seeing these posts. As soon as I switched to Epic on the amp model it was louder, cleaner, clearer, and I preferred the character over the Panama for this track. After reducing Ch vol on the amp, and reducing the Sag just a bit, increasing drive just a hair, and presence, I had a tone that really came to life in comparison to running the PV Panama through it. ... I will have to try this amp model out with some heavy rhythm guitars. So I concur the L6 Epic, L6 Elektrik, and L6 Litigator are all pretty awesome from my experience. We all know the ones like Matchstick, and Archtype are great, but some more Line 6 originals would be welcomed. Even though there is still so much in this thing that I haven't got around to exploring yet. :P

"Rules of Thumb" and Tips for Creating New Presets
Lachdanan0121 replied to Fireproof's topic in Helix
I stated that the pickups in the 5th guitar are lower output. The other 4 are relatively high output, even the single coil guitar, only one guitar has acrtive pickups. I am on mobile now if you want a list of guitars, and components, that will have to wait until I am in front of my pc. I will edit my first post. I play many kinds of styles... no country though. I do Metal chug, jazz cleans, and much in between... -
"Rules of Thumb" and Tips for Creating New Presets
Lachdanan0121 replied to Fireproof's topic in Helix
I usually keep the input pad on for 4 out of 5 of my guitars. Unless im using the 5th, then I turn it off, and just run a vol block on front set to a middle ground between having pad on, and off. The 5th guitar uses pickups that are lower output than the rest. This is why I would prefer moving the input pad parameter out of the global settings, and into a per-preset basis. -
Thanks! Voted all 3.
-
Seconded! Mono versions would be great for when I want mono rhythm L, and mono rhythm R. Another thing that would greatly help would be able to have multiple merge points for both paths. As it sits now I can only split, and merge once per path, unless I am doing something wrong...

No body mentions the Line 6 Electrik much, but it is pretty nice for medium to high gain. Most of the other good ones have been mentioned.

Not comparing, speaking in addition to. Audio engineer, or mixing engineers already takes this into account when setting up their studios. Having guitarists even be aware of this, would be an improvement. The distance from speakers is added on top of everything else. Other than being able to hear clearly, its one of the main reasons to use IEMs, or floor monitors close to them in live environments. Yeah the cable distance thing was just me having a dumb moment, but I can at least admit to it. However, yes the 1ms per foot of space does matter for sound to travel. Its also one reason that Concerts on DVD, or Bluray where camera quickly moves from the back of the arena, to the stage, that there is some lip-sync issues.

You may kid, but at this point, I'd give it about a 50/50 chance. Something like the UX-HX lol.

lol good question. I have Pod Farm 2 as a bonus to registering a Pod X3 bean years ago. However, it may have been a different account. Though honestly, I am quite content, with a $99 price point. That said I feel as if I should point out that I was wrong when I replied to the intial question of "will pod farm 2 users get a discount for Helix Native?" I responded I don't think so, but it looks like there will be one afterall.
-
Haha yea, I had a dumb moment about the cable I was even questioning myself when I wrote it. I was wrong, I even addressed that above. However, the rest is sound... pun intended. I agree a few ms is imperceptible. It was the point I was making about the piano, and the 8ms average for auditory feedback to reach the ears.
-
I don't think so. HELIX is a completely different product line, and tier from the POD stuff.
-
You are quite right Musiclaw. I was wrong about the cable length mattering when it comes to latency. I thought I might have been which is why I included the (if I remember correctly) lol which I didn't remember correctly on cable length. But the rest is all accurate. Thanks for the correction, and picking up the slack for me there. I did have a bit of a brain fart.
-
Everything has latency even the analog world. Every 1 ft of space between you and the speakr is 1ms. Same for every 1 ft of cable length if I remember correctly. Tube amps have this as well. Even pianos, no electronics... takes an average of 8ms from the time you press a key till you hear a note. The time increases ever so slightly towards the high, or bass notes, as they are further from your ears as a player than the middle is. The 1ms to 3ms you get from the helix will add to it, but I highly doubt that is your problem, even if it is a latency issue.

Interesting, may not be exactly what I want, but it could open up other tonal possibilities. Thanks. I am in the middle of a project, last song on the album. I wanted to get all the rhythm guitars ReAmped before upgrading FW. Just incase of any sound change at all, as I really liked a tone I dialed in for Left Rhythm guitar. In this same project I have some bass guitar that I want to ReAmp as well. I was going to work on that after I upgraded FW, with all the new bass goodies. I am still on 2.11. It was stable (the best so far for me) and I just decided I would wait until 2.20. As I didn't want to chance it unless it brought along with it some goodies. 2.12 didn't, but 2.20 does. I was also waiting to see if this FW update brought with it bugs that would hinder me. I figured most of those would have been posted about in the first week, or so of release. I will still probably give it another few days.

Unfortunately not, I know of no stereo separation parameter, or FX in the Helix. Which is why I was hoping they would have it in this 3 band Comp. Though hopefully they will upgrade this multi-band comp in a future update with stereo separation/merge for each band. They already added a parameter to one of the FX's in the helix, but I can't remember specifically which one, maybe one of the delays... No worries on the late reply, I appreciate the response.

DI did state that they do constantly improve the modeling engine, but just don't wax poetically about it. So a sound improvement could have happened, or not. It was tested for one FW update once before, (with no change) but not all of them...

Someone needs to learn the solstices/equinoxes. Hell, I mean they are the very basis for most religions' major holidays. It is Winter that just ended a week, and a half ago.
