upgrade to 2.0 has changed some of my tones dramatically

I've just done the upgrade - not even played with snapshots - but sounds great.  However, after reloading my old sounds, I've found a number are extremely bright.  Not all of them.  And as an aside, I think the Global EQ is different too. (can you save Global EQ??)

Anyhow, Matchstick Ch1, Is now way brighter - might be a plus in the end, but a pain right now!

Essex A15 - again - very bright - using the combo with 1x12 Bluebell.

Are the IR's changed?

And talking about that!  I have a pile of IRs- but when I reloaded them, they came in in alphabetical order (how the directory was) - so I have to figure out which ones I was using - did I do something stupid there?

Ok - over to the wise!

Do I need to rebuild 3/4 of my sounds?

Yes, if only I had kept that info!

Nothing regarding the brightness issue? - these are Line 6 combo amps and speakers

You probably need to change the guitar impendance of any single patch because they moved that feature from global settings to patch setting and the default value is "auto". So if you had set a different value in the global settings before, the patches could sound and feel different with the Guitar Inpendance set to auto.

Yes - I think you have found the issue.  Thing is I'll still have to remake those patches a little, as although the auto setting is too extreme, the total tonal balance across the guitar is clearly better somewhere in between - a learning experience with the typical touch of pain!

Any opinions on the best setting for a Strat - I got 2 American standards and I suspect they are different anyhow!!

Be aware that for some users these new preset impedance settings are not saved while saving the preset. After opening these presets anew, the displayed value is the saved one but the sound returns to "auto" until it is altered again. It's already mentioned as a bug.

I have experienced the same thing, and I noticed a few others have mentioned this as well.   When I reloaded the patches that I had saved (ones I created or downloaded from custom tone) they sounded extremely bright, thin and harsh.  Unfortunately I did this right before I had a recording session.  It didn't go well.  I don't think it's the Impedance because I had it set to Auto before and now I believe they are all defaulted to Auto.  If Line6 tweaked any of the Global Settings or amp models it would be good to know what changed so I could adjust.

One fairly common issue is with IRs. If you are using any IRs instead of the Helix cabs you will have to reload them in exactly the same locations as they were when you backed things up.

Yep, I agree, the two most frequent causes of presets appearing to change after an update are IRs not being restored at all or being restored to different slots than they were in previously, and global settings being set back to default.

Here is a quick checklist after a firmware update, feel free to add any I have neglected to mention:

  1. Reset your various output settings back to "Mic" or "Line" (whichever you were using). This includes the send/return loop settings if you are using external effects
  2. Reset your impedance and pad values
  3. Reset your global EQ if you were using that
  4. Restore your IRs to exactly the same slots they were in previously, otherwise your presets may now point to the wrong IR or no IR at all
  5. Reset Tap Tempo Pitch to "Authentic" or "Transparent" (whichever you were using)
  6. Reset Tempo Select to "Per Preset" or "Global" (whichever you were using)
  7. Reset your sample rate to whatever you were using , e.g. 48khz (default)

it's a lot of faffing around to have to do each time (especially if they start releasing bug fix updates) You'd think there'd be a way to update where it remembers your settings and can keep IR's loaded.

I had to actually look it up to see if "faffing" was a real word, lol. I love British slang! It all sounds like someone just made it up on the spot. :D

Oxford Dictionary definition for "faffing"

Late 18th century (originally dialect in the sense 'blow in puffs', describing the wind): imitative. The current sense may have been influenced by dialect faffle 'stammer, stutter', later 'flap in the wind', which came to mean 'fuss, dither' at about the same time as faff (late 19th century).

I did the upgrade and am also experiencing the thin sound others are having. I looked in the IR list and there are none?!! What did I do wrong and can I recover them?? I have not added any and had a problem with the Helix locking up after the upgrade and reinstalling my presets. Please help me somebody?!?!?

I am not clear if you had IRs loaded before your upgrade. If you did hopefully you still have them in a folder somewhere and can restore them via the Editor. The trick is putting them back into the same IR slots they were in before the upgrade.  Otherwise you will have to repoint each of your presets (the ones that you assigned IRs) to the correct IR. If you did not have any IRs loaded prior to your upgrade than the most likely source of the sounds having changed significantly is your global settings having been set back to their defaults. I have an earlier post in this topic for settings you may want to check.

If you are still locked up or locking up there are many posts on the forum regarding how to backup and restore presets as well as how to recover from a failed upgrade (usually just involves preset backup, download and installation of the latest "Helix Editor" 2.0 install app, firmware upgrade via the Updater app, and then a #9 & #10 footswitch reset procedure). If there are specific presets you lockup on there are instructions on how to delete them or you can often retain them without future lockups by modifying them ever so slightly and re-saving them, depending on whether you can get into your Helix long enough to do that.

There's no faffing allowed in Canada. We're going to make people smoke weed instead.

Just stop faffing about and spark up the spliff, Canuck! That should make everything sound different Maaaaannnn!

Ya ain't seen nuthin' yet!
