Helix Unboxing, Why I Bought It, and Its Size Compared to HD500X
duncann replied to ChristianArnold's topic in Helix
What do you think of the expression pedal compared to the HD's? I find I like the pedal on the HD to have a better mechanical design. It's feels smoother. It doesn't get in the way when you're actually using it. There's something about Helix's pedal that's rough and floppy. If the tension is loosened too much, the pedal really starts to feel ... cheap, is the word that comes to my mind, despite that the pedal is a huge block of alumin(i)um doesn't seem to help much. -
If each path requires its own amp, you're sure not going to get a lot of extra stuff on two of the paths. One of the three paths would be able to handle a considerable amount. You could share one amp between two of the inputs, which would allow for more effects, for a possible solution.
-
I think you could get more than $250 for it. It is after all still a current, and currently still built, product.
-
Besides the improbability of being able to run four amps with much else in the chain, it's not possible to assign a block to more than one switch. Some sort of scene switching would work. It will be interesting to see how they are going to implement this.

Thank you for the wonderful insight into something I was looking to do on Helix, which is a way to reset a time based effect to have predictable behavior from that effect.

I really look forward to the editor also. Last I read, maybe sometime around the end of this month. One of the recent firmware updates added two delays: a dual delay and a reverse. Still waiting for an auto volume too...
-
One of the reasons I really never used the mid focus eq was because it wasn't transparent enough. The one I found to not color the sound at all is the studio eq. So maybe try one of those combined with what clintmartin said about the low-cut cab parameter.
-
I guess all that would assume the in review and in progress indicators are updated with any sort of accuracy to what's actually going on. Maybe they are updated only when the development team accidentally remembers about it. lol.

Once you have your patches built and use it to perform or play, it's stable. I did have a complete freeze on as late a version as 1.04.01 or 1.04.02, and I'm not sure what caused it, but I think I was working on a patch nearing the DSP limit. One thing you might want to be aware about is the spdif out, which for me drops all sound usually around 45 minutes after being turned on and lasts about 1-3 seconds. I'm using that output the exact same way as I did with my HD500X, which never had a problem. Others on this forum have mentioned problems with the spdif output. So, for me it's stable, but missing features currently.

I'm not sure what to say, it's an oddity for sure. Do you know what firmware version was on there? It could be they did some optimizations along the way from version 1.0.
-
Everything you mentioned fits in one path/processor. The input block/circle has a gate right there. For the phaser and tube drive make sure you're selecting the mono versions (much less dsp). Where it runs out on path 1 is if you selected the stereo versions for the phaser and tube drive, and you wanted a spring reverb.

Haha. I used to have one of those surround cube speaker systems from Bose. It was only OK for watching movies and stuff like that. I remember plugging my Rockman sustainor and stereo chorus delay into it, and it sounded really good!

Glad you liked it! Thanks. I should be ashamed that I know the name Jeff Beck and generally the type of music he wrote and is revered by a lot of people, but never really listened to him with any intensity, and certainly don't know how to play any of his stuff. In fact, I don't know how to play any Joe Satriani or Steve Vai either. Yikes! But I take what you said as a very high compliment.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean?

I still like my HD, particularly for effects, and as a backup for when Helix might fail (can't help but worry about this lately with a number of people reporting broken leds and scribble strips, damn). It sure does turn on quicker. I gotta agree that Helix lacks effects, but the ones that are in there are really good. The delays completely demolish the HD's. You can get some really strange things going on with just the delays if you're into that sort of thing. For some reason I haven't identified, I like the HD's octo reverb better. The amount of DSP in Helix is roughly like having two HD500Xs, or slightly more, without the block limitation, and in one package. I haven't run into any limits yet, and at least one of my patches uses quite a bit of stuff.

Really great you all like it. Awesome! Thanks! :) I've never really used custom tone. Don't like it very much. But anyway, here's all the patches I used. The bass patch might not be very useful for anything because a lot of the tone comes from the active eq on the bass itself, Ibanez SR1205E. Other than that, the only guitar I used was an Ibanez JEM7VWH, EVO pickups. Forgot to mention, the patches OctoGrowler and Clean use the Taylor 314ce-Earthworks IR. aphotic.x.helix.patches.zip Taylor 314ce-Earthworks.zip

The input impedance on the HD also went up to 3.5M. Helix only goes to 1M. One of the first things I always did when building a bass patch was to put that on 3.5M for the extra brightness. And if Helix is designed anything like the HD with input impedance, and I remember correctly, they couldn't add anymore values to this via software because it's an actual circuit. But they could add a global variable for sure to make it per preset at least. As you point out, good for people with many, many guitars. I only ever play one guitar, so no big deal for me. But options are rarely bad things.
-
I've had Helix now for several months and this is what I came up with: Aphotic X, bandcamp or soundcloud. It's about ... well, I'll leave that to you to figure out. Everything is done on Helix, no post-processing in the DAW, except for a compressor on the main track for volume. There is one track where I used the growler filter from an HD500X. If anyone wants the presets I made for this, that's not a problem. Thanks for taking a listen, hope you enjoy.

I think you're on to something. You just reminded me that I had the same thought in the past, that their flagship guitar processor should at least be able to accomplish everything that the lower models can. I don't know what's involved in porting over HD stuff to Helix, but it's gotta be easier than modeling or creating an effect from scratch.
-
They did away with the whole resonance thing (res, thump, decay) in Helix. I was one to usually jack up those parameters, but I don't miss them at all in Helix. Never noticed before now, but you're right that you can't set input impedance per preset. Guess I don't miss that either.

I feel the same about some effects. Line 6 does look at and use their Ideascale website to help tell them what to focus on for further development. Have a gander over there for an idea of what might be coming next for Helix. Here's what I'd like to see from the HD: Panner: I know this can be accomplished in Helix with one of the tremolos, but in order to get a slow enough speed, the bpm would have to set really low. All of the filters except tron-up and tron-down, which already exist in Helix. Bass Octaver Auto-Volume More, not necessarily from the HD: Phasers!
-
It still will exhibit the dead zone behavior though, regardless of where the block is and what curve is selected. One could: 1. Get used to it. 2. Midi control the pedal from the DAW. 3. Use an external pedal. 4. Hope Line 6 makes a global option to disable the dead zone. But some things, like a wah, I don't like to control except manually, because it becomes a part of the play style, which limits me to either option 1 or 3, and option 4 isn't very useful. I don't have much occasion to position it at the end, since I just do DAW stuff, and things like that are easily enough controlled, and even automated, at that point.

This kind of follows the same mentality of: well, now I have an HD or Helix or Axe or Kemper, etc., and I've seen all these wonderful videos of people making great sounds and productions. Damnit! How come I don't sound like that auto-magically?!
-
Hope you get a good one arislaf. The odds are in your favor by far, especially now that you've already received one of the less than 5%, or probably even 1%, of bad units. Good luck. Once you get past the initial disappointment (sure does suck though), how and what Helix can do what it does I'm sure will more than make up for it. Also, if you're retailer starts giving you a hard time, I suspect Line 6 would certainly take care of you, no problems.

I say they redo everything and model it after the original Fallout games. At least then people might have nostalgic, or even fond, memories when they work with HD Edit. Great suggestions about a more modern interface, but please, please leave out the touch controls. Or have a different version to be used on a surface tablet. And make things scalable. But I think at this point, these things are just wishes. They still haven't fixed the bug introduced with last firmware update that hides the value of the DEPs.
