Jtv-59 String Change
edstar1960 replied to JaseFIJo's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
They were designed to work with 10's - so they should provide the optimum performance out of them - but other gauges can be used with success but you may have to tinker with string volumes in Workbench to allow for any differences introduced by the string gauge change. The mags should not be affected much at all - certainly individual string volume should remain the same if you have not altered bridge height. Are your strings particularly close to the mags? Even if they were very close, I still can't think why the low E would be much louder by using a lighter gauge string. -
Ah - that all makes sense now. So when using VARIAX you were getting a +6db boost for VARIAX because it was coming in on INPUT 1 and INPUT 2. Then when you changed INPUT 2 to GUITAR, you got a +6db boost on the GUITAR input. Using AUX means you only get one instance of both GUITAR + VARIAX which means they even out. NB: If you are placing an FX block in the PRE path, you can choose to use INPUT 1 = VARIAX and INPUT 2 = GUITAR. That will still allow you to use either VARIAX or GUITAR and only have one input signal and no doubling. Plus, you also remove any possibility of extra noise being added to the signal path from the AUX input, even if nothing is connected. Glad you have things working as you want.
-
Great - glad you solved it. Did you originally have INPUT 1 set to GUITAR + VARIAX and INPUT 2 = SAME?

Jtv59 Cutting Out
edstar1960 replied to nealwilltucker's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have had a similar issue when playing just on mags and flicking the pick up selector switch clears it. I have also seen a couple of others report similar problems with their JTV59s. One of which sent theirs back in to have the faulty mag pick up replaced. Mine is out of warranty and I usually use the modelling, so I am not taking any action regarding the glitch with the mag pups yet. As your guitar is still in warranty I agree with Silverhead that you should take it to a Line 6 service center to have it repaired. -
Are you using INPUT 1 set to VARIAX and INPUT 2 set to SAME? If you are, then simply changing INPUT 2 to GUITAR for patches where you only use the Variax will lower the input by 6db. If you are already doing that, and you don't wish to adjust string volumes on the Variax with workbench, then you can use an fx block as the first in the chain to attenuate the input. The Vintage PRE in the EQ menu will allow you to lower the gain and some of the other EQ fx can perform a similar function.

Here is my reply from Line 6 support: Hi, Sorry for the very late reply I was working on this this morning with a 59 and 89 we have here in the office and could not get either to pop with the presets listed below. However, I do see from the threads that several people are experiencing the same thing... Is it possible for you to update this will a video of the guitar behaving like this. If I have an exact repro like this I can consult with engineering about it. Thanks, David **** END QUOTE *** Does anyone have an audio or video of the problem that they could upload to this thread for me? I don't want to move back to firmware 2.0 just to recreate this, if I don't absolutely need to. So if someone already has a recording or still has the issue and can quickly upload a recording for me that I could pass on to Line 6 support, then that would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Correct. It is the way it is designed. The TUNER only works for whatever is connected to INPUT 1. I have never understood why it is like that and I have just worked around the limitation when I have encountered it. Why can't the tuner also be used for INPUT 2? Maybe there is some good technical reason why but I have not seen anything reported to explain it. Perhaps it has already been mentioned on Ideascale and if not, perhaps it should be suggested.

I know you have said you have tried all the setting combinations, but have you tried this particular combination? STUDIO/DIRECT mode, picking just a PRE amp model, and selecting NO CAB and having the 1/4 inch switch set to LINE? That will ensure you don't get any artificial EQ adjusting the sound and a PRE model should be an equivalent to the Peavey's own pre-amp running into it's power amp. Then just adjusting the PRE amp model gain, tone and volume settings as well as adjusting the HD500 MASTER control should enable you to get a reasonable amp sound. That is what I would start with first. Then if necessary, I would double check that all my leads are working fine and then I would adjust and compare the following: (a) 1/4 inch switch LINE compared to AMP (you will drive the power amp stage more with LINE, but you may prefer the sound when you don't push it so hard) (b) NO CAB compared to a CAB model, and then choose different mics, and adjust the ER value (I would expect the NO CAB sound to be the most realistic but a cab model plus mic may soften the sound for you and you may prefer it) © PRE amp model compared to FULL amp model (the full will also model the power amp stage, but will produce a richer fuller tone at low volumes) (d) Using just one INPUT compared to using both INPUTs (in other words, having INPUT 2 set to SAME). Hope that helps.

I use the HD500 tuner all the time. And I have used it for intonation setting. It seems good enough. Recently though, I have had an issue where it confuses the A and the D string. I strike the open A and it flashes up D. I use it with a JTV59 and VDI. It doesn't do this all the time - but when it does it is very frustrating.

The 4 cable method allows you to use your amps pre-amp as another pre-amp selection as part of the POD. If you don't like your amp's pre-amp or simply don't need it or prefer the pre-amps available on the POD then you don't need to bother with the 4 cable method. You can use the POD to just do fx which would typically be placed in front of an amp - and you can then use it going into the guitar in on your amp. If you want to use the POD's amp modelling then it's best to bypass your amp's preamp and go straight to the power amp in on your amp. Guitar into POD input - POD output into power amp in - just two cables needed. Hope that helps clarify things for you.

There is no easy answer. The HD500 is a complicated tool to use mainly because of all it's flexibility which in turn lead to problems if its not fully understood. Try reading these for background and essential information on how the HD500 works and how to get the best out of it: http://line6.com/support/topic/2033-pod-hd-500-500x-new-routing-schematics/ http://line6.com/support/topic/4927-how-has-greatly-improved-my-use-of-the-hd500/ http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/ Hopefully they will shed some light on the dark arts of the HD500 and suggest some things you have not tried before, and perhaps with a little more experimenting you will hit upon a setup and sounds you like. There are plenty of other useful threads out there with useful nuggets of info if you find you need more help ..... Good luck!

Jtv 59-69 Comparison (59 Is More Bassy)
edstar1960 replied to anto99's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have had a JTV59 since they were first launched and just this week I got my hands on a JTV69. Just playing the JTV69 unplugged, I could tell it was tonally very different to the JTV59. I have only had time to try it plugged in for a very short time but immediately I could tell the models did sound different - and that has to be down to the physical characteristics of the JTV69, the bolt-on neck, the tremolo, the wood (alder) etc. Those nuances get picked up by those super sensitive piezo's and they come through in the final modelled tone - so the same model will sound different when played on a 59 and a 69. And as stated above - even the same JTV types may sound different due to subtle differences in their construction. Some people may not notice those differences but some will. -
Yes - it is because the 1.9 code is different to the 2.0 code - so they process the same models differently. End result the acoustics will sound slightly different between the two releases even though they are using identical model data. You are noticing the difference but others may not.

Those settings are only valid for the FRONT selections. For a DT25, I think it defaults to COMBO POWER if you are connected via L6 LINK. Those settings are intended if you are going into an instrument input on the front of an amp, which means you are going into the amp's pre-amp first and then to it's power amp, so the HD500 tone will be affected by the tone stack on the amp - and you can therefore adjust the tone coming from the HD500 to counter act that. They are not relevant for a DT25 unless you are not using the L6 LINK and you are using the HD500 to go straight into the DT25 instrument input.
-
Correct - the 1.71 versions were replaced with the HD acoustics with the 1.8x release. They are the same as the ones in the 2.0 release but remember with 2.0 you are also getting different processing software to go along with a complete new set of HD models and the new Workbench HD, and that different processing code may mean the 1.9 and 2.0 acoustic sounds are rendered with a very subtle difference but the underlying models are the same. If you want pre-HD acoustics, you are correct in stating 1.71 is the firmware needed, and the models in that release match the models in the Variax v700 and other first gen Variaxes.

Is This Normal...?
edstar1960 replied to guitar4u's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I didn't notice this when I used Workbench HD after rolling to fw 2.0 for my JTV59 - I have since rolled back to fw 1.9 - so can't reproduce the exact same scenario for you. Are you sure that both your USB cable and 1/4 inch cable are fine? Maybe one of those is faulty and is producing the crackle? -

Weird Overtones On Jtv 59 On Low E
edstar1960 replied to stumblinman's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
In Workbench HD you can set the GLOBAL STRING volumes, as well as set the string volumes for each individual model. It is an option on one of the drop down menu items - should be quite easy to find - can't remember exactly which off the top of my head as it has been a while since I tried Workbench HD. The global page is intended for people to even put any volume differences between the piezo's on different strings - I think it controls the preamp volume from each piezo. The individual model values are to allow customization for the model, such as muting a string or strings, or adjusting relative volumes of strings to each other for that model only, that is if they need further adjustment over and above the global levels. -
Noise Problem Finally Solved!
edstar1960 replied to ajktsb's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
You can raise a support ticket with Line 6 and ask them how much it would cost for them to replace one of your piezo's on your JTV and ask them if they can point you at a 3rd party supplier to get it directly if they can't help or they are too expensive. You can also look at the graph tech options..... for 69 here http://www.graphtech.com/products/brands/ghost/product-detail/pn-8002-l0-ghost-strat-elite-style-pickups-lefty---6-strings?id=a502ed85-e860-4115-af57-bc85a8649df2 for 59 here http://www.graphtech.com/products/product-detail/pn-8593-c0-ghost-loaded-resomax-nw1-wraparound-bridge---chrome- 4 replies

Yes - it is most likely to be DSP related. I guess the OUTPUT mode is effectively a global EQ being applied at the end of the chain - so it would be like adding yet another fx block to each patch on each stereo path. Actually, does the STUDIO/DIRECT mode add another EQ curve or is that the one mode that effectively does not manipulate the HD500 output? But all the other output modes DO add an EQ curve? If STUDIO/DIRECT does add a global EQ curve, then I wonder what things would sound like if it could be turned off to save DSP and allow global EQ to occur at the mixer or final destination of the signal? So, how about a NULL output mode? I have never used an HD300/400 so I don't know if they had dual modes. But the X3L allows you to have the XLRs set differently to the 1/4 inch outs.
-
Yes - in the System setup menu you can choose the mode - either use it as ABCD or Fs1-8 (pedalboard mode). When ABCD, the bottom 4 switches change patches and the top 4 can toggle fx on/off. When F1-8 then all 8 switches toggle fx on/off in the current patch, and when in that mode the patch is changed by using the BANK up/down switches to the left.

Thanks Rowbi. The technology in question is L6 LINK, and that is used by 3 currently supported Line 6 products - HD500, DTxx, and Stagesource speakers. The problem with the scenario inquestion - although supported and documented by Line 6 - is that the HD500 only allows one OUTPUT mode at any one time. If the HD500 could use different output modes for different outputs and even for different stereo channels (L or R) then full support would be possible. It would be possible using a JTV to have an electric guitar sound going to DT25 combo amp on the L channel with HD500 using combo power amp mode and at the same time have an acoustic guitar sound going to stagesource speaker on the R channel with HD500 using studio/direct mode. Or it should be possible for the HD500 to swap between combo amp mode and studio/direct mode when patches swap between a DT25 and L2M speaker and MUTE the other when both connected via L6 LINK. I think it should be possible for the L6 LINK code to do that in all the supported devices - they just need to write the code. We can live in hope. :)

Jtv69 Neck Specifications

LOL :D -
So you have tried muting path A at the mixer and you still get the clear guitar signal. Have you tried switching everything off in path A and muting it in the mixer, and just having the chosen amp model in path B, with db at 0 and pan at center - do you still get the same result regardless of what model amp you choose? If you revert to a single amp and place it before the split - does everything work fine? If the answers are all YES then I think you have a faulty unit and you should raise a ticket with Line 6 support, and contact your vendor and tell them and possibly send it back and get a replacement especially if it's within your "evaluation" period. But it is also worth seeing what radatats has to say after he has checked out your patch - just in case it is something I have overlooked.
