"CABLE LENGTH" X "POD HD500X" (Need some help with the equation)
pianoguyy replied to AllfatherWotan's topic in POD HD
once you get out of your bedroom, you will need that. *especially considering that you don't go 25 feet in a straight line because you need slack so that you aren't tripping over them. Let me put it this way. In my youth, for bar local gigs, I had my own 50 foot snake that was used to get to the snake used for the pa. and that doesn't even get into measuring the ones used to get to the amp/guitar/effects- 5 replies

because the chinese flu has stopped products from being made, shipped, displayed.... and since stores are closed and people don't have jobs, they can't even buy products if they wanted to. I mean, have you tried buying toilet paper lately? It certainly isn't discontinued, but it isn't on any shelves anywhere. *luckily, I have 90+ "mega" rolls in this house. No, I didn't panic shop. In fact, quite the opposite. I haven't bought any since November. **think about it. would I even be at home on the internet on a friday night if i hadn't been trapped in a no fly zone thanks to the media's fear mongering.

LOL my rig is fairly simple I use guitars. *Only 2 matter to me but they aren't part of my 'tone'. The other 100 are either collectible items, specific-use items, or guitars that are bought today and sold tomorrow. Line 6 HD 500/500X/Pro X *Yes, I have all 3 of the units (I do not have an HD Pro), but I only use one at a time. They are all the same, so nothing changes in my tone. But because of my situation(s), I have multiple of the same. Between travel, multiple homes, and sometimes I use a floor unit and sometimes a rack unit... I run direct to the PA. *sure, I have headphones, monitors, amps, and even those little $10 computer speakers. But those are to be used when... as example, I am here and want to play, so I plug in what I have available. Or maybe the "and friends" gig I host every week, requires me to take my own monitors because of the much smaller sound system. The goal is to have nothing between the pod and the sound guy. ***depending on the employer, I may have specific devices. such as a talk box or wireless or a midi/sync system. But in general, it is guitars and a pod. And life couldn't be better. What once took all day to pack up, load up and load in, unpack, set up, sound check, tear down, re-pack, re-load and then re-unload... I can now show up at the venue 5 minutes before show time and be ready to go. I don't. But I could. And because everything is digital presets, I never have to worry about anyone turning any knobs messing everything up. Just recall the preset and it is back to where it should be.

now, with all that being said.... you can make some great tones with the 500/500x/pro/pro x with or without an amp. you just have to: 1. know the system you are using. meaning, a guitar amp will give a different tone than a flat system. both of which need their own settings and patches. 2. know which global settings to use. 3. know the device. not just the software, but also the hardware. for example, using one 1/4" signal will sound different than using one xlr signal. but using one 1/4" signal with a dummy plug in the other 1/4" jack will sound the same as using one xlr. 4. (as touched on in my previous post) know that the device is not giving you the tone you are accustomed to hearing (guitar amp tone). it is giving you a "CD Tone", because the simulated amp/cab has been mic'd the same as it would be if going to a recorder or pa system. so, you are hearing the 'final' tone, not the pre-mix tone.

speaker size is not the same as volume, but they do go hand in hand with tone (which is why 'in the olden days' some people would prefer a 4x10 instead of a 4x12 or a 60watt over a 100watt) basically, if you can play a Metallica CD through the speaker and be happy with the tone and the volume... you can put your guitar through it and do the same *and that includes headphones. Me, in 35+ years, I have never used (unless backlined or sponsored or purposed) a tube amp. So, I am certainly not a snob in that sense. But I understand where they are coming from. If you need "the push of air" of a same room amp, there is no modeler and tiny speaker system that is going to fix it. But tone doesn't come from air. And since I have been on some big stages where you rely on monitors because an amp simply wasn't going to cut it, I am well beyond "my tone" and am always concerned with "audience tone". I need to be able to hear myself live. And when tone creating, I need to have it loud and clear enough that I can hear it loud and clear.

1. in 2014 (ancient, in technology terms), you don't know what that website looked like 2. the user has 8 posts. why would you click on a link that goes to a non-major website. 3. if you searched for 'factory reset', this would have been way down in the results. there's numerous posts that would have come first.

well, hell, since you put it that way.... if you want your solos to be heard over top of everyone else... TURN UP THE VOLUME

NECRO THREAD 7 years and multiple firmwares later... most of the problems have been fixed. but if you are needing to plug your gear into different outlets from each other to get the hum to go away... that is not something that L6 can fix

Good Lord, where's the "banging head against a brick wall" smiley when you need it?

but you aren't hearing FOH. let the paid professional do his thing.
-
or, you change your volume 0. let the sound guy do it. that is why he is there. maybe you change your tone for leads. but don't touch the volume. here's the problem with volume. math exponents and fractions and stuff at bedroom level, you play at 1. you set lead volume is 2. but at rehearsal, your volume is 10, your lead volume isn't going to be 11, it is going to be 20. for shows, your volume is 50, your lead volume is going to be 100, not 51 where it should be.

this may be a crazy idea... but... um... have you tried running a patch that doesn't have any effects?

Well.... The device not being recognized by the pc isn't necessarily related to this problem. And that, unfortunately, means you may not be able to fix this issue yourself.

I can tell you right now, that nothing said here, in a 2013 post, applies to any of the technological issues in 2020.

the pod cannot do that.

your amps sound funny. your fx sound funny. the unit can't be hooked up to the pc. the wah calibrates fine at 0-255. the ribbon has been reseated. what makes you think your problem is a wah problem?

ultimately, it depends on what your goal is. if you want X, we can do that. if you want Y, it can't be done. If you want Z, we can make it work but not easy.

Call an experienced musician and have them come to your house to hear it. Some noises are fine/normal. Some noises are bad and need professionally fixed. Some noises are bad but common and easy to be fixed.

This has been my concern from day one.... My last rig lasted 30 years (and it still worked when I replaced it). I can only hope that this one remains completely functional just as long. But that means we need the accessories (drivers, edit, etc) to also be maintained. Otherwise, the product is the equivalent of toilet paper. Use it and throw it away. Does Line 6 really want to be thought of as something we wipe your lollipop with...

Test your ears! PodXT or Tom Scholz (Rockman) Soloist?

i did the same, but also bought the rack mount to make it part of my rig. Modeling tech is a godsend for me. 'Going direct' is something that I had always sought but could never achieve. I had keyboards that went direct. Vocals went direct. Acoustic guitar went direct. I could never get a decent direct tone with my electric guitar. Eventually I gave up and had gotten my rig to the point where I didn't even question when someone said "we need X tone". But, then, fast forward a few decades, I needed to make a change. And as I went looking at stuff,,, hey, they finally got this working, let's go for it. I will never use an amp again.
