Your advice on bad squeals feedback through FRFR monit
specracer986 replied to mikebruno's topic in Helix
I use a DXR12, up on a pole stand, behind me, when playing in my band. I don't have a problem with squeals, but I do like that I can get controlled feedback pretty easy when using a high gain lead patch. When I want it, I raise the guitar up and facing back, over my shoulder. When I start to get it, but don't want it, I turn and take a step away . You are probably using more volume than I am. Are your pups potted? -
Well, I've done the "Tap Dance of Shame" on stage, in front of people! The real problem is it took me a second to figure out what had happened. But, I also like keeping effects on the top row for turning on and off without changing snapshots. This often allows me to use one patch for two or more songs that have varying needs. So I'm not sure I'd want them to change anything. But me having the option to reassign that button might be helpful. I've learned to be extra careful at rehearsals, but at a gig, anything can happen and usually does.

How to Respond When The Bass Player Doesn't Like Your Helix
specracer986 replied to talonmm's topic in Helix
I wish you luck, but the bass player has so many wrong opinions, that I doubt you'll ever get him to admit he's that wrong, and I think he is going to be a constant problem I agree you should have your own playback amp. Preferably a FRFR. I use a DXR12. Unless you're playing in fairly large rooms, you really don't have to be in the FOH, but you can easily do both. -
Evzlx12p line 6 L2m qsc k12 Friedman asm can't decide
specracer986 replied to Riki1's topic in Helix
The first time I gigged with the DXR behind me on the floor, was in a medium sized bar with brick walls. I was set up on one side of the stage, My wife was sitting half way back on the opposite side of the room with a small Tascam recorder running on the table. The next morning I was listening to the play back and I could barely hear there was a guitar in the band, and I was playing lead. Since I put it up on a pole stand, I've made recordings and gotten a decent mix, so I learned my lesson. But again, I usually don't go through FOH, because our venues aren't that large to need it. -
JTV 59 Questions
specracer986 replied to specracer986's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thanks, they actually have two in stock. One is 8# and the other 8# 6oz. Those are good numbers for me. If I shave down the neck, I'll probably lose a little more. There's one advertised locally. I'll kick this around for a day or two. One morning I'll wake up and either have the courage to attempt shaving the neck, or I'll decide I must have been a complete idiot for thinking of such a thing, and go for another '69 with a Warmouth short scale neck. -

specracer986 replied to Riki1's topic in Helix
I gig with my Helix and DXR12. The DXR is mounted vertical on a pole. You really need to do this for proper dispersion, especially if you aren't connected to FOH. Concerning the Friedman ASM. That has just one 12" speaker, and no HF driver. I've read that it's very dark, though I've never played through one. I'm not sure that Friedman actually markets it as a FRFR. It also weighs 52#'s, which means it would never be on my list of wants. -
JTV 59 Questions
specracer986 replied to specracer986's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
One more question, please. Does anyone know the weight of their JTV59? I have an LP that is almost 10#'s and I can't take it anymore. I'm not sure if the '59 is chambered in anyway. I'm hoping it's under 9#'s. -
JTV 59 Questions
specracer986 replied to specracer986's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thanks for the info. I went to save the comparison chart and found that I already had it saved and forgot about it. Pretty much the chunky neck is keeping me from deciding to go with the 59. I'm actually thinking of sanding the profile down myself. I'm capable, but it might be a little bit of a stressful project knowing if I F'up I've made a $1k piece of trash. I have an 89F, and I'm fond of the slim profile that it has. I want to have a short scale length guitar. My fingers are getting old. I considered a short scale Warmouth neck for a second '69, but except for the neck profile, the '59 checks all the right boxes for me. I'm starting to see a reprofiling project in my future. Should I post a build thread, or would that be too painful for you fans of chunk? -
Is the neck profile of the 59 as chunky as the 69? How are the stock mag pickups? Is the bridge pickup the same as what comes on the SSH 69 bridge position? What is the scale length? I'm considering one as a back up to my 69.

I think the op is asking about something that is both tone and technique. I hear a good amount of note bending in that song that accents a dreary type of tone. Here's a short clip of part of a recording that I did, trying to capture that type of feeling. I admit my tone is pretty clean, but I used all neck pickup to get a little dreariness in there. It was done using my Katana straight in. A little thunder sound effect, helps the mood, also. https://app.box.com/s/zmaptuejhpee7zcjo4wz2vy00krgkcrw

glideman; do you also have a standard type of frfr? I'm wondering how the MBritt and something like my DXR12 would compare. I guess I'm dreaming of finding something between a full on frfr and a guitar cab, that doesn't color the sound too much but isn't as sterile as an frfr can be at times. The Mission Io got a good write up in GP mag last month. But there's absolutely nothing on YouTube about it, and very little about the MBritt. I probably should just spend my time getting better at building patches instead of looking for a crutch!

I'm also interested in the Xitone MBritt cab, and also the Mission Io. There's very little info online about either one of these units. Jtv-69 Neck Size And Bolt On Options...
specracer986 replied to dtray187's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I did a Warmouth neck swap on my JTV69. I didn't go for the 24.75" conversion but I'm interested in possibly trying that. If you do it, please post your before and after experiences. I did go for the Standard Thin profile, compound radius, SS frets, Earvana Tusq nut and Bubinga fret board. A totally great neck for me. -
I agree it's possible. I have a patch with both a clean JC120 and an Uber amp. I can go from mild to wild in that patch and I use it often.

Variax "Don't force" model confusion. How about a "Back to Knob" setting?
specracer986 replied to katerlouis's topic in Helix
I use my Variax and Helix, exactly like mdmayfield, so I have no need for any other options. I'm not actually sure, but the OP might be helped by selecting "Per Preset" instead of "Global" on his input block. -
What frfr speaker/amp do you guys use for at home and jamming?
specracer986 replied to spearmint95's topic in Helix
I'm using a DXR12, up on a pole, for live. I don't connect to FOH, so I found that putting it up on the pole was critical to getting decent dispersion in a room. I'm interested in trying a few new cabs that seem to be slotted between a guitar cab and a sealed FRFR. The Mission Io is one of them. It's active, 450w, and only weighs 29#'s because of a neo speaker. The Xitone Michael Britt is another. That one is open back. I can't seem to find too much info on either of these. -
When you save parameters to a preset, they are saved to all snapshots. If you want different parameters to a specific snapshot, you need to do it on the floor unit and push in the knob as you turn it. This creates a bracket [ ] around the parameter number and it will now be saved only to that snapshot. If you don't see a bracket, it's being saved to all snapshots in a preset, which is what you get when you change parameters in the editor.
-
As twpmeister said, go into the input block, where I assume you are going to change the Variax input selection for each snapshot, and change the Variax control setting from global to per preset. That should be the easiest part of your problem.

VDI cable/jack life expectancy
specracer986 replied to indianrock's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I've been using the same cable for close to a year with no problem, and I'm not very kind to it. It's not going to surprise me when it quits working. But, I do carry a spare. -
Does your bag have a handle to carry with one hand? I would think the weight of the Helix would make it a bit clumsy to carry on my back. My entire rig fits on a small cart, with the Helix in a gig bag laying on top of my Yamaha DXR12, and another gig bag on top of that. Everything bunggie corded together, My guitar is all I carry. Everything, including the cart fits in a Prius, with the rear seats down.
-
I'm interested in the Mission Io that I saw in GP magazine last month. It has a neo speaker and is pretty light, 29#'s. GP gave it a good write up as far as sound quality. Here's a link to that one: https://missionengineering.com/shop-2/products/amplifier/mission-io/?v=7516fd43adaa

Good point. Native sounds interesting, but I'm not all that sure that I have any real need for it.
-
By your description, I'm inclined to think the hi/lo cuts on your cabs, as shane suggested above, will tighten up your tone.

Funny how none of the photos shows the power cord. It must be magic!

Nice song. I agree, that the Freman and DeLaune presets are great starting points to work with. I normally tweak any preset that I start with to suit the particular song, but theirs give you a real nice base of operation. I've bought most of what both those guys have available. On the other hand, I wouldn't go so far as to say that none of the stock presets are worth checking out. It's all a matter of how much time you have to tweak.
