FYI, for those instances where you need a MIDI host for a USB controller, you can use one of these: http://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-host-midi. Plug your USB controller into it, and then a MIDI cable to the Helix. You have to do a little soldering (not much), a couple of resistors and a 5-pin MIDI port, but the host board works great with stuff like the nanokontrol, and its fairly priced.

Thank you Peter!!!!

Hmm, you bring up an interesting point. I believe "import" vs "export" is always relative to the device (hardware, plug-in, etc) or component in the chain of devices that you are focused on or dealing with. So, if you are looking at Helix Native in a chain of stuff (guitar, interface, computer, DAW, Native, output channel, etc), when you "export," data is being exported from Helix into something else (such as computer storage). When you import you are bringing something (like a preset or an IR) into Helix. Think of two countries, one is exporting soybeans, the other is importing those soybeans. It depends on where you are; if you are in the country sending the beans out, you're exporting. I still mix up my MIDI ins and MIDI outs! But beans I understand.

That's pretty darned cool! Reliability would be the concern, but if you tested it enough at home it might be gig-worthy.

That's what its all about for me, plus less chance of wrinkling my spandex from pushing down foot switches...

You,re correct, Logic will also record the actual performance (live input of MIDI data in real time). But if you want precise timing, I find its usually easier to enter manually (or edit after the live input) to get precise placement of the Snapshot changes. So, Snapshot #1 where a verse appears on the timeline, #2 for chorus, etc..... But to each his own when finding what works best for them.

You may need to be the pioneer on this one. Let us know what happens.

I used a MIDI track I created in Logic to control a HX Effects in real-time just this last weekend. You need to create an External MIDI track in Logic, then use the Event List for that MIDI track to manually enter the MIDI CC commands that rd2rk (and the manual) mentions. Make sure the event list includes the same MIDI channel you have specified for your Helix (I think it defaults to Channel 1). I'm assuming your drummer is using a click track? If so, the snapshot changes will be sent in time as long as the events are at the right place on the time line.

Dang. Especially for live gigs, I personally have problems playing tightly if latency gets above 10 ms. I can sort of adapt and adjust to the delay, but there's something about being close to speakers and hearing an unnatural delay that messes up my neurons.
-
Let us know if you get them and what you think....
-
Sure, it can be done. Route as rd2rk mentioned. Use the Helix Command Center to set up footswitches to send the appropriate MIDI via USB to Plini. You will have to deal with round-trip latency (audio delay), though .... and the severity of that will depend on your setup.
-
Its possible, and straightforward. Just use a split path with an IR block on each path. Look in the manual under "Signal Routing Examples." Also read "Editing Input, Output, Split & Merge Blocks" cause you'll want to use those also.

I like the Redwirez Ampeg. I think these days they only sell their stuff in a bundle, so more $$.

Never seen it happen. I'm assuming you have some Helix hardware connect to the same computer. Perhaps (just a guess on my part) it is controlling Logic while you are editing. You could try going into Logic's Control Surfaces assignments and setup and see if that's what's happening. If so, you could temporarily deactivate it as a control surface.

Reason 10 VST host changes snapshots while I'm editing???
soundog replied to jclark5093's topic in Helix Native
That's spooky. And certainly weird. Is anything else running on your system, or just Reason? Also, does Reason have some sort of MIDI monitor that you can watch? Or you could run a separate MIDI monitor app on your PC to see if MIDI is coming from somewhere. -
Need help automating Snapshots with Logic Pro X
soundog replied to holliskef's topic in Helix Native
Glad to help. FYI, I'm running the latest version of Logic, but no worries about that snowflake .... there are a bunch of optional things you can display on the track header, and the snowflake (Freeze track) is one of them ...... I just happened to have it turned on in the display. That's the thing about Logic .... its DEEEEP. I've used it for many years, but am still learning. -
Need help automating Snapshots with Logic Pro X
soundog replied to holliskef's topic in Helix Native
Hollie -- OK, at my computer. You don't really need Smart Controls. Just use an Automation lane .... its as easy as automating Volume in a track. 1) in Logic, make sure you've selected Show Automation (from the main menu, its at Mix>Show Automation). 2) in the audio channel where you've got your Helix plug-in, use the Automation pull-down menu to select Helix Native, then you should see a list of available automations (Knob 1 - 16, etc .... and Snapshot Index .... etc). Select Snapshot Index. 3) You should then have an automation lane for Snapshot Index, with a line at the bottom for #1. You can click on the line to select other Snapshot numbers, at the time you want them to be in effect. That's it, really. I'm assuming you're using the latest version of Helix Native. I'm using 1.82 in this example, but I think any 1.8X works just fine. Hopefully you'll be in Snapshot Automation Bliss soon. Below are some more screen shots I took when writing this up that might help.... -
Need help automating Snapshots with Logic Pro X
soundog replied to holliskef's topic in Helix Native
I can't walk you through step by step because I'm away from my studio right now. But if you know how to create automation lanes for plug-ins in Logic, you should be able to do what you want without any extra gear. The steps are basically 1) set up your Snapshots in Helix Native, 2) in the Logic track that contains Helix Native, create an automation lane for Helix Native: Snapshot Index. Click in the automation timeline to create the Snapshot number at the bar/measure where you want the Snapshot to take effect. I had a screen shot on my computer from another post, as well as a cut/paste from the Native manual that I've attached that may help. Otherwise, I will be in my studio later today so can post something more thorough if you need it. -
If you're taking a poll, count me as one who has not had these issues. I also use snapshots "intricately" on my HX Effects. But to be clear — I'm not sure what "Boot failure-whammy gets stuck" means. What seems to be the event that causes the problem?

Nice bassoon! Reminds me of Soft Machine concert stuff....I love that. Having used both a Voicelive and Helix for sax processing, I find the Voicelive to be vastly superior when it comes to "smart" harmonies and octaves. Helix has better modulations, delays and reverbs, however. Here's a video example of TC Helicon's Harmony-M (just the harmony engine from Voicelive) on looped alto sax. Video is near bottom of page, sax starts at about 2:45. FYI, the guitar is an old Variax Acoustic 700!

Agreed! If we could Frankenstein features of each, we could design our perfect looper. In the meantime, I have to settle on "the best I can find for what I need to do." I hope you get the firmware update(s) you want!!

HX Edit is SOOOOOOO much easier to use for setting up presets and banks and settings than the hardware interfaces. Thank heavens for the software.

The (expensive) Aeros looks promising, though I'm not sure how it will be for live, on-the-fly, impromptu looping --- its hard to tell without some use time. Such looping requires predictable and precise button response, and the ability to use the pedal with minimal visual feedback. And, there is nothing on the website or in the manual that indicates you'll be able to control the Aeros via MIDI CC commands (a feature I'm shopping for now based on current wants). There are pros/cons when it comes to any looper, and most players have different looping needs. You really have to spend some time with each (and the manual) to figure out which one is best for you. There are $100 loopers that will meet the needs of some players.

Well, I've been around the block a time or two with all sorts of setups and loopers for solo performances. At one time I had a laptop-based setup using Mobius (a software looper) and midi pedals. It all worked great at home BUT if things went south at a live gig it was a (female dog) to recover from or troubleshoot. I nixed it for live use. Boomerang III is the best looper I've found for live use. Yeah, you can't save or recall. But I'm OK with that. Pigtronix Infinity had better MIDI support, but was too constrictive for live on-the-fly use.
