For comparison, what is the dynamic range from the Guitar In in the POD HD500?

I'm not getting it. Why do you want everything in path B? Why not have everything in Path A, mute Path B and tell the DT which Power amp settings you want through HD Edit? I'm positive I'm missing some point here and would really love to know what it is!

I see on the helix page the guitar input has 123 dB of dynamic range. How does this compare to the HD500X?

I'm not sure about the elixers, with the coating and all but apart from that there's no reason not to change your strings. I changed mine for a hybrid 'd addario EXL 125 set. I need to be able to bend the bottom E string fairly far and close to the nut, so the 10's didn't do it for me. All went really smooth and I didn't even have to readjust the bridge springs for tension!

It won't dot the power amp switching through L6 link but you can do that through a standard midi cable. Of course that means one extra cable but that shouldn't be a complete deal breaker. As I understand, with the midi cable almost everything possible with the PODHD500-DT combo will be possible on the Helix-DT combo. Only some outlandish configurations with four DT amps and such will stay out of reach. of course it would be ideal if everything worked with just the L6 Link but you get the needed functionality and the sound will be great, what's the big deal?

To me, YES. I feel the great thing about any Variax is it's versatility. It can emulate many different guitars. Some of the guitars it emulates have a tremelo, so I feel a Variax should have one as well. Of course if you never intend to use a tremelo that's fine, you won't miss it. Personally I think the 59 is the most beautifull and I was inclined to buy one because the 89 doesn't have a tremelo anyways. My goto guitar is a Ibanez RG with tremelo so as a model the 89 did appeal to me, just missing the tremelo didn't make any sense to me. Good thing I waited and the 89F came out. I bought it and I can tell you the Graphtek tremelo is very well built and functions great!

I agree I wasn't totally correct with my explanation but I rectified that in a later post. :wacko: Should have corrected the original as well, will do so in a minute. ;) The fact is that using the POD HD with Line6 Link connected to a DT25, the POD will switch to Combo Power amp mode. In this mode the Cab simulation DOES work, together with the DEP's. It's very noticeable. On the other hand the mic simulation doesn't work in this mode. I guess Line6 thought it would be good to simulate different speakers, even though it's finally going through a real cab. Otherwise you would wind up using all amp models through the same cab voicing (the real one). On the other hand simulating a miced cab isn't really useful since you would mice the cab for real if necessary anyway. Actually I believe the mic model does work through the XLR out of the DT25, thus simulating a miced cab when going straight to the desk from the DT (not 100% sure about this one).

That's not cool :( I've had no trouble with my DT25, hauling it to rehearsals once a week and gigging every now and then. Only one melted tube B)

I'm afraid that isn't true either. Connecting the PDO HD to a DT-25 amp sets the POD to "Combo Powe Amp" automatically. The cab settings still work in this configuration. It seems changing the mic doesn't change the sound though.

Sorry but please keep your facts straight. Th POD HD is complex and confusing enough all by its self. When using pre amps there ARE Cab models as well as the Cab DEP's. There are of course no Amp DEP's since they belong to the power amp models. The mic models don't work in this configuration (although I'm almost sure they do work through the XLR out)

could it have something to do with the topology, Class A/AB triode/penthode settings? Do they change when you link your HD500X?

No, it's a 69 body so it's definitely not a 89 neck. Wouldn't fit. You're probably correct that it's a custom neck though, it doesn't look like a stock 69 neck.

It seems to be a 69 body and neck with a 89F double locking Floyd Rose tremelo system. She's also using some non standard pickups. Great looking guitar! Nice to see some well known top player using a Variax. Of course, Adrian Belew has been using the Variax electronics in his Parker guitar for a long time.

Actually I find the 89F the best Variax because of it's versatility. Modelling a strat on the 59for instance is a bit off because the 59 doesn't have a tremolo. The 69 does have a tremolo but then you can't really do all the divebombing and such expecting it to stay tuned. To my eyes the 59 is the most beautiful but I waited for the 89F to jump on. I feel that if you want a modelling guitar to model as many guitars as possible it must have a fully capable tremolo. Just my way of looking at it.

I never complain about updates. I think every update is bonus after buying a great product. They actually keep making it better, without it costing anything. But, I was a bit disappointed to hear the Global EQ doesn't work over the Line 6 Link. It's probably some technical thing they couldn't do anything about so I won't drag them through the mud for it (not my style anyway). It's just very unfortunate that this great feature won't work for the Flag Ship Dream Rig. Oh well. I'll just have to do without like I've done for years or get an external EQ and put it in the effects loop of the DT amp. Still a happy camper :D

What do you know about Tung Sol, do they have any negative tendency?

Just curious, but how do you play the guitar without touching the strings with your bare hands? ;) On another note, I made a jack plug with one wire connected to the ground pin in a grounded plug that I can plug into the wall for the rare occasion where I have an annoying ground loop. It seems strange plugging the jack into a 220 Volt outlet, but if you do it right it's actually very safe. :ph34r:
