  1. Correct. No USB on Spider III amp. No updating Spider III amp, but you can download updates for Spider IV amp. The FBV3 floor controller does has USB.
  2. Mike,... are certain that what you are looking at is an FBV3? The one I have in front of me has USB and the RJ45 FBV mod connector on it. Could you check again? As BillBee suggests, check the link for compatibility, there are some extra notes regarding the FBV3.
  3. Body will have an affect on the overall tone colour (EQ) of the signal. How much, I'm not certain with this body. My educated guess,... darker tone maybe a smidge boomy, a bit mid-range -ish, looking like maple body so the highs won't be as pinched off as with some other woods. Would still be functional, if the transplant is done correctly without mods to the electronics.
  4. Found this in the Knowledge Base, not certain if this is what you're looking for,.... ... hope it helps or is in the right direction.
  5. Microphonics from tube starting to fail. When was the last time the tubes were changed? Can also be intermittency in the circuit hardware. Oh and, stay away from florescent lights. Being a 10 year old product, it should be checked and serviced by an authorized service center that knows the insides of this product. Shock hazard is too great to be doing this yourself. I still get a zapping every now and then,... it hurts.
  6. Don't know why they were discontinued. Don't know about reviving. I don't find out these things until they make one, then bring it to my bench for a tech check flight. Idea Scale is the place to go to submit ideas. They look at that here. It's how the Helix was created.
  7. It's distorting too soon at a lower gain,... what type and brand tubes are you using? The wrong one will give an incorrect characteristic curve and distort too easily. These aren't the all analog amps of old, digital and analog sides need to play nice with one another.
  8. Tubes should be change out (and biasing the power tubes) once every 18 to 24 months, depending on how much you use it and how hard you push it. Like care tires, once every 50,000 miles. When they get old and and the gas in the tube with it, weak tubes can leak current and pull down the supply line. And always use the specified tubes. These are not, all analog tube amps of old, so you can't get away with the same sort of mods and tube swaps like we used to do in the 1960's and '70's.
  9. Would not recommend going light than 9's, nor heavier than 11's. Try to keep it in that 9 to 11 range. It's a piezo string tension thing.
  10. Brought it into work a couple times to compare. The JTV has a 370-12 in it (three pick-up version of the 360-12). Back then Workbench wasn't HD yet. JTV was pretty close, with more time, I probably could've gotten closer.
  11. " Didn't find a 360-12, user "--- being a 370-12 user myself,... the JTV sound is very, very close. It would be closer if it wasn't for the fact that the 370-12 is a custom rebuild. I can duplicate that really well, or an original with some minor adjustments in Workbench HD. It's nice.
  12. When was the last time the valves (tubes) were replaced?
  13. @Bob2point0,... yes, around 2010-ish, about the time or just prior to when the JTV came out. 10.3 is the earlier Motorola/Freescale chip architecture, while 10.13 is the Duo Core or greater Intel chip based. Been having to deal with aspects of those disparities myself of late with my Mac's. Those links that soundog posted might help. Just don't try to use Workbench HD on an older Variax of that period, it's not compatible. Use the original Workbench.
  14. When it was made,... message me the serial number. How many? Don't know, wasn't here back then, can't help there.
  15. No problem. Quite right, just reinforcing the point you made. Very good. Some of the floor effects play nice and some don't. Depends on which era guitar, the floor effect product, and what firmware they're using. Got to have all the ducks in a row, as the saying goes.
  16. " It is really the sound of the magnetic pickups coming through the speakers at the same time as the modelling is on "--- Magnetics are turned off when the Modeling is on and vice-versa. What is referred to as "magnetic bleed" is probably "warbling". That is a result of the magnetic pick-up height to string distance not being adjusted correctly. Magnetic pull warps the transverse vibration of the string. In short,... a set-up issue.
  17. Sorry, should've prefaced it by making it at brue58ski. But it might be useful in general. I'll leave it for each individual to decide for themselves how useful it is to them. It's out there for whomever it applies to. Good eye as usual.
  18. It is what's called "dual tone effect". It is what happens when you hear both the standard tuning from the guitar and the alternate tuning from the amp, at the same time. Turning up the amp or headphone volume lessens or negates that.
  19. We use Uno here too. And as always,... don't have any USB hubs connected when connecting Line 6 product to a computer.
  20. I haven't had any problems playing JTV, Standard or Shuriken (or any early Variax guitars) through X3 or X3 Live, since that's what I've been using to test and check all Variax guitars since 2007, when the X3 Live came out. Still my main bench tester for guitars here, old and new,... for now. Never had a problem playing through XT Lives and X3 Lives with any Variax. Communications for program or control functions between guitar and floor effects is where the compatibility question comes in, depending on the floor effects and Variax combination being used. For pre JTV Variax and JTV's with firmware version before 2.00, use Workbench. For those with version 2.00 or later, use Workbench HD. Older Model patches are not portable to the newer JTV, Standard and Shuriken guitars (or vice-versa).
  21. "I thought when you don't have the Variax circuit engaged, you are just using the mag pickup. "--- Correct. But all audio signals go through the circuit board. 12k-Ohm or more will give a darker tone EQ. It's not like passive electronics guitar where you can mess with resistor or capacitor values to alter tone color and EQ. It has to impedance match to the processor board or the tone color/EQ will be different. 6k to 8k Ohms, unless you want a different tone color. Richie Castellano did a pick-up change out live on Facebook back in November or December last year, He used a 12k-Ohm DiMarzio and found it to be darker than he wanted. He liked it dark tone, but 12k was too dark. Check out the video.
  22. One color would be for defaults, the other would go with any custom patches or tuning.
  23. No. The LED's are the LED's. It's not like the Helix foots witches with different colours.
