Strange one. You might be able to narrow things down by running the monkey program with the HD turned off. Is the HD500X listed in there now? If it is, it could be something peculiar with the HD500X. Otherwise it could be an unknown software problem with your computer and the monkey program.

Lol. Just a million?

I'll echo what joel_brown says. Many, maybe even all, of the existing amps can be set in a way that will produce very similar results. Of more impact to the tone is cab and mic choice. If you have a tone in your head and can't quite seem to get it on the HD (or other modeler), get as close as you can and compensate by adjusting your playing to make it work. I've found it's a good way to improve your playing by putting less importance on the tone.

You actually don't need Line 6 Monkey for anything other than flashing the firmware. It's just the easiest all in one location to tell you what you need which are the drivers, which allow for recording in your daw via usb using asio and also enables using hd edit, hd edit if you want to edit patches on the computer, and the license manager for authorizing any model packs.

Pod HD500x Recording via Sp/dif, and Editing via USB - HELP!
duncann replied to briggsdigital's topic in POD HD
In addition to disabling the HD as a recording device as ouduka16 said, also disable the HD as a playback device. What's probably happening is when you connect the HD via USB, Windows is switching the default playback device to the HD. That's not very nice of it. Don't worry about not being able to record in your DAW with these disabled, even if you want to record via the HD's USB channels. It will work fine, as you can still select (or should be able to) the HD's ASIO driver within the DAW. You will also be able to run the edit program with these disabled. The only reason you'd want the playback and recording device set to the HD is if you want the HD to be used as your computer's sound system. -
When the XLR output is selected, it would become the output controlled by the large volume knob, or the main output if that is what you want to call it, so you're exactly correct. In addition, if you need to adjust the spdif level (-60dB to +18dB), that can also be done via a global option.
-
For output options there is also digital (spdif, aes/ebu, or l6 link), send 1/2, send 3/4, usb 1/2, usb 3/4, usb 5/6. There's a few options for what the volume knob can control depending on the "Volume Knob Controls" global option. Those options are: multi, 1/4"+xlr, 1/4", xlr, or digital. There is no integrated meter display as datacommando mentions.
-
Doesn't matter so much for me because I usually end up just switching things from the DAW. Save the switches!
-
There is another global option to set what the volume knob controls: multi, 1/4"+xlr, 1/4", xlr, or digital. That in combination with the digital output level (global option) would make one way of adjusting each output level independently. Another way would be to adjust the level on each output block in the preset, assuming there is a separate output block for each output type. If there isn't you can add another output block if there is room to do that by splitting the path at the end of the signal chain.
-
The main volume knob on Helix does control the spdif volume. Relative to other outputs such as the 1/4" or XLR it is quieter though, when the newly added global spdif level is at 0dB - I have to dime Helix's volume knob.

If you don't want to use snapshots, simply ignore the fact that snapshots are part of the system and continue to use Helix just like you were before.
-
Lol. But what does this mean when you have infinite possibilities for musical compositions and for tones when using Helix? Does narrowing the infinite possibilities sprouting from Helix even matter? And how long does it take to narrow infinite possibilities? Aren't you still always left with infinite possibilities? Maybe that's where the peyote comes in. To help solve the impossible...

Are you talking about in the editor program? Indeed, I've accidentally clicked the delete X on a block. I don't think you're missing anything bigger. In fact, you're not missing something smaller. :)

No complaints here using Helix for bass guitar and recording. Favorite amp is the SVT Bright and favorite cab is the 4x10 Rhino. For a list of the amps, cabs, and effects, check out the Helix manual which lists these things and their real world counterparts.

You might be running into an HD Edit bug. I remember running into something similar when assigning expression pedal values. They wouldn't stick. Not sure if I remember correctly, but before actually physically using the pedal, move out of the controller tab. Also, when adjusting the min and max values, I remember having to use the keyboard arrow keys, or things might be forgotten. Found an old topic maybe related to this: http://line6.com/support/topic/7782-having-serious-issues-with-my-pod-hd500/

Glad it works for you. If Helix suffers from a problem, it's that it allows for so much flexibility, that in itself can sometimes become a stumbling block.
-
What you want is a perfect use of snapshots. It's much simpler and easier. But it can be done without them using and A/B split. Rather than try and describe with words, check out the attached patch: dist-tog-alloff.zip

If you're even considering spending € 1000 (what is that, about 1100 USD?), you might want to also consider spending a couple hundred more on Helix. You could probably find one for two or three hundred less than the 1500 USD (the rack version with controller is around 1800 USD) they sell for new without even looking too hard. Helix would easily do everything you list above, way more in fact, and no need to worry about amp packs. I can't comment on HD modeling over the XT Live as I've never had the XT Live. Helix modeling over HD modeling, however: Helix is in a league all its own. That doesn't necessarily make HD modeling bad though. There's plenty of good sounds in the HD, but they can be difficult to find and dial in. If you really care about the tone for your guitar, and don't mind forking over a little more money, Helix does not disappoint in the least. It's also likely something that will last you for a very long time, considering the XT Live lasted you more than a decade.

It's still amazing to me just how much - in terms of options, routing, and different ways to achieve the same things - Line 6 has crammed into Helix while still somehow retaining the ability of a simple, cohesive, and extremely easy to use device. The people behind Helix went beyond designing and building a guitar processor to making something that's a work of art in it's own right and category. If only more of the junk sold today had that sort of philosophy behind it...

As a guitarist, it is of primary importance to protect the hands! Snapshots are great. I honestly don't know what else they can really do to improve Helix aside from adding some missing filter effects and an autovolume.

What percentage do you use for path splits to delay & reverb?
duncann replied to HonestOpinion's topic in Helix
On one of my patches, I just used a Split Y. But I had to increase the mix slightly for both reverb and delay relative to using these effects in series. In series I might use around 20% mix for delay and probably less than 20%, maybe up to 30%, for reverb, depending on the reverb. For parallel, delay mix might be 30+%, reverb up to 50%, again depending on the reverb. -
Don't forget Les Stroud (aka Survirorman)!
-
Since you ask, an auto-volume. Or better yet, an effect block modifier that would allow making a volume block into an auto-volume. Don't know if that possible though. And a lot of the filters from the HD, like the voice box, seeker or obi wah, growler, and some of the synths.

Helix Editor needs a right side scroll bar to be used on small screens
duncann replied to tjontheroad's topic in Helix
Yea, there's a scroll bar for the parameters. The command view is missing a scrollbar though. But the problem is when you make the entire application window too small, everything below the signal chain can become cut off with no way to access. So an overall scroll bar that would scroll both the signal chain and parameter view would fix that.
