Theoretically it's been said maxing out the Master Volume to 100% cuts down on the noise. I used to set mine at 3 o'clock to give me a little leeway. I now set mine at 12 o'clock (50%) because I build my patches to have a mic level out of the XLR outputs and this gives me enough leeway to get to line level if I need it.

Variax - Line 6 Up To It?
brue58ski replied to barkerm's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I don't see where he said they were out of business. Just that they stopped responding and still have the guitar. I would just go in and ask to see my guitar. I have had very good and very bad experiences with Line 6 "authorized" dealers. I know who to go to and who not to go to in my area. -
Is Variax being discontinued?
brue58ski replied to Oyster38N's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
That's the Variax standard. The $700 dollar entry level Variax. Does not surprise me it's from China -
And if that isn't enough overdrive, try a Screamer (the TS-808) in front of the amp with the Drive all the way down and use the Output to push the amp more a la Stevie Ray Vaughn to name one.

Confirmed the JTV VDI cannot charge the battery. And, cause it sounded like you might have tried it, do NOT plug both the 1/4" and the VDI in at the same time. The VDI has voltages that as I understand it, over time, will fry things if the 1/4" in plugged in. Not in Line 6 documentation and I think it should be. Unfortunately I have no quick solution for the missing string sound. There is the standard reflashing of the JTV firmware but I don't think it will help.

That;s scary. I thought I was protected but I guess if the surge is big enough I'm not.

Wait a minute. If it can't metal, how can every patch sound like metal? And if EVERY patch sounds like metal, you're listening to a style of metal I haven't heard.

You probably already know this but as a workaround, you could put a reverb and your choice of modulation after the reverb, in path A after the amp with the reverb mix at 100% and the modulation mix to your taste. Then, using the mixer with A & B panned to center (0), use the A & B sliders to adjust your mix between the "dry" amp on path B (the path with no FX) and the reverb/modulation on path A.

DeOxit is one of the best. I use it at work.

:o Was that you creeping around my window while I was watching Orange Is The New Black? I swear, I only watched it that way twice.

Anybody using Bias FX (by positive grid)?
brue58ski replied to leemh's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
You can get great sounds out of the HD500 but it requires some major tweaking because the amps are so raw. So there will be a learning curve. -
This is something kind of minor if not infinitely small but, just for fun, I've finally decided to comment on it. I can't help but notice the lack of Variax's in much of Line 6's media. Look at all the pictures of the Line 6 products on the website. Not counting the Variax product page, out of the 21 guitars I found on the website (this includes videos), only 6 were Varaix's. And to answer the question coursing through many of your minds now, yes, at this moment, I have little to no life. Anyway, if the Varaix is all it's supposed to be, why isn't it the main guitar I see in pictures and videos? Is it just me? Why aren't most if not all of the extra patches offered by Line 6 (not counting the factory patches) created with Variax's? If I were Line 6, it would be the Varaix I would almost always see. It would be the Variax I would almost always hear. Especially the guy on the beach on the main page...where's the Variax? That's your "opening number". You may say "well many of the products don't have a VDI Variax interface". That isn't a requirement for the Variax. You can use a battery. I don't mean it should be in everything, but it should be the main guitar I see throughout the website. Is it just me or am I being a bit anal. Don't answer that. And don't take this too seriously. But it does make me feel a bit like a second class citizen and that even Line 6 doesn't like their own Variax's as much as I do.

I agree with cruisinon2, I've tried running a POD thru a Dolby 5.1 system (4 small speakers, center speaker and sub woofer), and it didn't sound very good at all. Didn't really spend any time making any adjustment on the stereo or POD but it's like cruisin said..they're made for a different thing. Good enough for dinking around at home but definitely don't build any patches from it unless they are specifically for the sound bar. They very likely won't sound good anywhere else.

Re #1. The 1/4" left output is a mono signal so bottom line, the amazon solution is your best solution for that.

HD500 How to use XLR for PA and 1/4 for stage amp??
brue58ski replied to JLEpperson's topic in POD HD
One thing that the POD X3 has that the HD500 doesn't is you could lock one of the outputs level (XLR or 1/4") and adjust the other's level using the master. So you could have the XLR's level going to the board locked and have the ability to change the level of the 1/4" going to an amp. VERY handy. -
Right where Eddie had it. ;)

Why you bought a JTV?
brue58ski replied to sabastiane's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I had rewired my SG so that every possible wiring of the split coil seymour duncan JB pickups could be had. Each pickup could be parallel in phase, parallel out of phase, each coil seperately, in series in phase, in series out of phase using a 4 pole six throw rotary switch for each pickup. I also swapped the pickup selector for the 4 pole 6 throw switch so i could do the same with each pickup. Put them where my tone knobs and pickup selector switch was so i didn't have to do any drilling. I always wanted to get as close as I could to several guitar sounds. Wanted to sound like everybody. Was already into the POD XT. I was just getting ready to replace my bridge with a piezo bridge for an acoustic type sound when the original Variax came out. Got a 500 and I haven't played my SG since. Now have a 69 and an 89f. -
Have you tried turning the SAG in the amp parameters all the way up?

This is my HD500x registered serial number 21P5S1L6425008244 It appears you are missing the 21 at the beginning and one more digit at the end somewhere

Are we a Forgotten Tribe?
brue58ski replied to spmartin's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have been on this earth for over 50 years and have also observed human nature. One thing humans tend to do is to make blanket statements about things without considering any specifics. I believe that is what you are doing. "All companies do........" That seems a bit narrow minded to me. Was, and is, there a need for consumer protection? Absolutely! Does EVERY company ONLY act in their self interest? No. Of course not. In my situation with Line 6 if they had been acting PURELY in their own self interest, I would not have gotten the conclusions I did from them. They did not have to send me a brand new X3. They could have sided with the authorized repair guy and not given me one. Which would have been the case if they were completely self serving. Would have been cheaper to not send me one. One other instance is I had accidentally stuck a 1/4" plug into the VDI socket of my Variax rendering the VDI completely useless. I was sent the VDI assembly absolutely free with only a phone call. Wouldn't have happened if what you say is completely true. So, I again, have to disagree with your blanket assessment that they operate purely in their own self interest. I right now work for a company that when I started, was very much about quality and the focus was not on the bottom line but on giving the best to the "customer". Because of that reputation business was great. The pendulum has now swung to the area you are talking about. But the swing was so recent that the public view is still that they are more on the side of the customer than the bottom line. So I would say, unless you are in the trenches of a company, you can't empirically state where a certain company is coming from. And Line 6 has shown themselves to be in the middle, if not leaning more toward the customer side, than your blanket characterization of them. You generally can't know for sure where a companies "pendulum" is. Again IMHO. And don't we all act in the manner you are describing from time to time. Do we go to the mom and pop store where you get great customer service and pay a little more. Or do we go to the large bulk store, or even online, because it's cheaper? i know I'm guilty of doing that. Good-bye mom and pop store. Good bye good customer service. Sorry, I think I've pontificated on this enough. I get where you're coming from and am also fairly cynical about the human condition. But I try not to make huge blanket statements about many things. It often seems to be more complicated than "this is how it is...period". Having said all of that, I will admit that Line 6 has basically bailed on products after they have improved on it all they can, or (dare I say it?) want to. The Vetta amp line was like that, to name one. It had some things wrong with it that were supposedly being looked at and then suddenly nothing. No more info on the Vetta. Not even a "we've given up" statement to let us know what exactly the status was on it. Just suddenly nothing. I think there was a we've moved on kind of statement but it wasn't an official Line 6 statmenet. It was a response to many inquiries about what's going on with it.
