  1. The FCB1010 is a good choice for this, as you can control the HX Stomp and 4 additional MIDI devices. In case you wanted to add more Strymons or? It'll also give you two expression pedals that can be assigned to separate devices on a per preset basis, and if you do the UNO mod, you get 5 additional Stomp pedals with sync-able LEDs. It limits you to 100 presets, but that's most of the available Presets (42x3=126). Also, while the Stomp doesn't yet allow MIDI bank changes, that function is listed as "reserved", so may be implemented later. On the full size Helix, the FCB can be programmed to select any Preset in any Bank with a single pedal press. Can't see any reason why they wouldn't eventually implement it on the Stomp.
  2. Yes, that is the ancient and currently unsupported "Ed Dixon" editor. You'll need two cables, as two way communication is required. FCB OUT/THRU to Soundcard IN, FCB IN from Soundcard OUT. When you press a Preset button on the FCB, the order in which the MIDI messages are sent is: PC1-PC4;CC1,CC2;PC5;NOTE. Anything left blank sends nothing. No, if the preset you want is in the current bank. I'm attaching a sysex file that demonstrates three things. When you get the editor installed, click READ SYSEX and select the file. I hope it works, it was created on my UNO equipped FCB and exported to sysex format. It demonstrate how to set up the following: Bank 00 - pedals 1-8 select snapshots Bank 01 - Pedals 1-8 select Helix Banks 1-8 with different presets in each. Bank 02-10 - Simple preset selection, current bank If it works as designed (sometimes sysex created on UNO boards with ControlCenter don't work properly on Stock boards with the Ed Dixon Editor), you should be able to create whatever you need. Let me know if it works! Helix Stock FCB demo.syx
  3. 1) You can do either. It's too bad you didn't get the LT or Floor model, you could have used Command Center to switch Timeline presets via MIDI to match your Helix presets. 2-3) There's no sure cure for bad FOH engineers. That said, no matter what PA you have at home, it's not likely to sound like every PA you'll encounter in the wild. Best you can do, if you've got a decent PA (not like one of those Fender/Peavey suitcase things), create your presets through the PA at performance levels - at least >85-90db. That gets you over the Fletcher-Munson curve effect. Then at the gig you can use the Global EQ to accommodate differences in rooms and venue PA systems.
  4. This sounds like a good idea to post over at Ideascale. I'd vote for it!
  5. As Silverhead said, BUT...ASIO programs like GTR3 will use the Helix as soundcard. Streaming programs like YT, Spotify (non ASIO) and the like can be routed through your computer's soundcard by selecting the computer's sound card as the DEFAULT PLAYBACK DEVICE in Sound P.anel. This way, if you want to Stream YT or Spotify through your TV or stereo and have the Helix play through your guitar amp or FRFR speaker, you can do that.
  6. Just switched over to my Custom 24 (older model HFS/Vintage PUPS). Way hotter than the Steinberger Spirit I was using last post. And MORE distortion! Damn, sometimes when I don't play the PRS for a while I forget how good it sounds......
  7. If the settings you copied are his "Recommended Global Settings", he keeps his Input Pad ON for some reason, but even doing that it didn't change the distortion noticeably. I'm using a guitar with relatively low output humbuckers, and the high gain amps he demo'd are anything BUT clean!. Maybe after you do a reset something might change...... does seem strange, though, that the other commenter has the same problem....
  8. If you're after my Homer Award, I warn you, I'll defend it with every donut at my disposal!
  9. I'm not using the same guitar he's using. I have no idea how he recorded those examples. You and I are beyond doubt using different playback systems. All that said, and taking into account the effect of listening to ANYTHING on YouTube, I set up the simple signal chain as in the video and cycled through some of the amps he used, and they sound just fine. REAL GOOD in fact. Some sound BETTER than the clips! So, my takeaway is that you guys are expecting to hear something WAY different than me, and I've had my Helix Floor for over 2 years. Maybe it's time for Craigslist? You can try AXE, Headrush, BOSS and Kemper. Tell you what though - my bet is that they will NOT sound like the YouTube sound clips! They'll sound like YOU, playing YOUR guitar through YOUR playback system. For better or worse
  10. .wav files are typically Impulse Responses, and can be imported directly into the Impluses area of Helix using HX Edit.
  11. DOH! Would be better if user had a brain! I was hovering over and trying to remove the image in the message. I needed to scroll down to the area "Uploaded Images". I humbly accept my Homer award!
  12. I'm currently having a problem attaching images/files in this forum. PM me a real email address and I'll be happy to provide the details in screenshots and example sysex files.
  13. Not worth the hassle for an occasional need. It would be better if the forum software worked the way it's supposed to.
  14. SOLVED! VICTORY OVER THE DEMONIC DIGITAL OVERLORDS! A combination of problems resolved by implementing basic DAW optimizations. Most of us know these, but for newbies stumbling across this thread, here are the most important (there are many others): Disable wireless adapter! Use the HELIX ASIO Driver (NOT ASIO4ALL!). Disable any unnecessary audio drivers. Power settings on HIGH PERFORMANCE. Windows sounds and special effects off. FROM CONTROL PANEL (NOT Settings), open SYSTEM, Advanced System Settings, Advanced Tab, Performance, Settings: Visual Effects= Adjust for best performance Performance Options Advanced Tab – Adjust for best performance of = Background Services Helix Sample Rate (48k) matched in DAW. Buffers 128-256 work on most machines. If all else fails, DPC Latency Checker can be a life saver! Of course, these optimizations apply to Windows. You MAC kiddies don't have to worry - it always just works.....Right? ;-) <--SMILEY!
  15. Do this first. Load a db meter (aka spl meter) onto your smart phone or tablet. Set it up with weighting = C and response = slow. Play at your normal levels. If you're consistently under 85db, that's your problem. It's called the Fletcher-Munson curve, and it describes how our ears perceive sound at different levels. Look it up, and try EQing your presets accordingly. Keep in mind that if you switch to a power amp and guitar cab, you'll wind up with LESS control over this. Guitar speakers need a minimum level to hit that "sweet spot", and that level is probably gonna be too loud for an apartment. If you're consistently over 85db, tell me where you live that your apartment has walls thick enough not to be killing your neighbors. I want to live there. As for your questions: - probably not - probably not - see above Summary: Stick with what you've got (which is already more than you need in an apartment), or get a good set of Studio Monitors.
  16. Yeah, must be a MAC thing. If only! This forum SW has been around for a LONG time. It's never going away. Probably explains why all the real L6 people hang out at TGP, and NEVER come here! I'm going to call and bother support. Maybe if I waste some of their time someone will make a note. Well, I can DREAM, can't I? [INSERT VIRTUAL EMOJI] :-) Thanks for the help Datacommando!
  17. The Attachment Allotment function - A true reminder that no good deed goes unpunished.....
  18. AARGH!!! I followed your directions up to "Place your mouse over the item that you want to remove and roll over to the "Trashcan" icon and click to "Delete". I don't see a Trashcan (MAC thing?), but when I clicked the image and hit delete, it went away. Then I saved the message. Unfortunately, it's still listed in My Attachments, and I'm still maxed out. I've refreshed, Logged Out and Logged back in, nothing gets rid of it. Any other ideas? I've mentioned elsewhere how much I HATE this forum SW. At this point I'm sure that there's no moderator, or anyone from L6 looking after it. I'll probably have to open a support ticket to fix this. AARGH!!!
  19. I can't presently send screenshots on this forum (my allotment is maxed out), but if you PM me a real email address I'll send shots so you can see how I'm configured, cause I ain't got no problems with Helix and Reaper like you seem to have, and I'm using (today) a funky old Gateway i5 laptop with 8gb memory.
  20. Apparently I've maxed out my image/attachment allotment, so I can't post images or attach presets anymore. Very annoying. Anybody know how to fix or get around this? There's a link on the new post screen "Manage attachments to free up space". That takes me to the "My Attachments" page which shows a list of attachments, but no obvious way to do anything about them! What am I missing?
  21. In Reaper, select the Helix ASIO driver. Select the maximum available number of Inputs and Outputs. Open ASIO Configuration. Start with the setting between "Extra Small and Medium. That'll be 128 samples. That should get you a clean pop/crackle free recording. You can then try Extra small an d see if your computer can handle it (it should).
  22. There ARE reasons (other than Steinberg sucks) to use the Helix instead. These reasons have to do with the ability to re-amp tracks. The UR12 (as well as the Scarlett I recommended) are single input devices. On a multi-input device (like my Scarlett 18i20) you can split your guitar signal before the Helix and send a clean signal alongside the Helix signal through the AI and record separate tracks. That makes re-amping even easier than using the Helix if you have Native or some other amp sim. EDIT: When using the Helix, if you record Outputs 1/2 on one track and Output 7 on another, Output 7 is the clean guitar. You can then put Native or whatever amp sim on that track and get re-amping.
  23. OK, that is just MHO. If you MUST use the Steinberg, plug your speakers in there and choose the Steinberg as you default device in Windows. Do be certain to use the LATEST driver for the UR12.
