Piezo pickups require a preamplifier to convert the high impedance to low.

Ipad Or Iphone - But Not Both Bluetooth Connectivity?
Charlie_Watt replied to azion22's topic in AMPLIFi
I don't think you can pair both at the same time. I don't have one of these amps yet but my other Bluetooth devices don't allow that. -
Variax 300 Sounds Much Better
Charlie_Watt replied to davec69's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Run WB and it will show you what model it thinks you have selected. That should tell you if the switches are working properly. -
I am running on a real old slow laptop and the app works fine. It's not that small on my display - more than half the screen size.

I do this all the time with my laptop. I just had to get the music player programs to use the HD500x as the output device. I use a program called Transcribe to play along with because I can tweak the tuning to match my guitar. Sounds much better when my guitar is in tune with the track I am playing. It's surprising how few tracks are actually tuned to standard pitch.

IMO they tried to get away with a much cheaper solution that was easier to build. Too many problems under heavy use. The HD500x uses much more standard foot switches that should last much longer and should also be easier to replace. (Just guessing on that part since I have not had my unit apart)

The Ghost saddles are far superior to the Line6 ones. They each carry a ground wire which is a huge improvement. They don't rely on a contact ground through the saddle into the bridge. There are a bunch of threads here about changing to these.

Jtv59 String Change Question
Charlie_Watt replied to smrybacki's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
If I'm not cleaning the fret board I change them one at a time because it's easier to get the trem back in position on my JTV69S. With my hard tail guitars I change them all at once so I can easily clean the fretboard and on my active pickup guitars, change the 9V battery that is under the pickguard. -
Everyone's global string volumes will be different if they truly balance the strings because of Piezo sensitivity variation. If you get the global volumes balanced then the models should reflect the actual string volumes on the modeled guitars (which may not be the way you like them). With WB first set the global volumes - then modify the model volumes to your taste.

Yes I removed the bridge so that I could install Ghost Piezos. I don't remember any blocks. The flex plugged directly into the PC Board and was attached to the bottom of the bridge on the other end.

700 Bricked During Firmware Update?
Charlie_Watt replied to roger111's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
If it is bricked you will have to send it to Line6 for reflashing. -
With modern LCD monitors you want to set your screen resolution to what the monitor wants.

Variax 300 Sounds Much Better
Charlie_Watt replied to davec69's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Yes. The model selector switch is actually a pot with a detent for each bank. If it's out of adjustment, the FW will select the wrong bank. This is a tricky adjustment because of this. -
No way that wire would work on my Variax 500. Mine has a flex circuit that has a flat connection like that one on one end but the other end has pads to solder the Piezo wires to.

Replacement Rj45 Cable For Usb Hub
Charlie_Watt replied to cstockford's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
It should have come with one. You should have a shell on one end and a regular rj45 connector on the end that goes to the Dongle. You can carefully use a regular computer cable in a pinch but It's not recommended. -
Locking Tuners And Breakage
Charlie_Watt replied to bowermang's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
At the nut yes but at the tuning peg? IT makes a smooth bend around the peg and the peg should keep the string from breaking at the sharp bend at the locking hole. My locking tuners usually end up with about 3/4 of a wrap around the peg when I string them. I intentionally start a bit loose so they get that much of a wrap. My 69S came with almost no wrap on the strings and none of them broke before I replaced the. Playing style has a big difference in string breakage. Some players are much more aggressive and they suffer more broken strings than others that are gentle rhythm players. -
Locking Tuners And Breakage
Charlie_Watt replied to bowermang's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have never seen a string break at the tuner on any guitar. They almost always break at the bridge. The locking tuners do not require winds around the peg. That is one of the great features of them. You can change strings 10X quicker with locking tuners. And they should not contribute in any way to string breakage. -
Mixing Mag And Modeled Pickups
Charlie_Watt replied to Geamala's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Not sure what you mean by "Hard/Awkward". Just push the knob to turn off the modeling and push it again to turn it on. If it doesn't work easily do the fix. Most work just fine. -
If you are not going to use the effects in the Amplifi then I would think a powered PA speaker is the way to go. That is what I did. I got the EV ZLX-12P and it has lots of clean power. It's much more rugged than an Amplifi and it has some basic DSP. I do want an Amplifi and I will probably buy one when it supports something with the USB like a laptop. I don't want to control the thing with my I-phone.

Pod Hd 500x And Variax 300, Workbench Not Work.
Charlie_Watt replied to Sqwier's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
I am sure that they got many requests to include pickups before they designed the JTV's. I like the pickups. I don't think they will come out with a cheaper Variax because it would just cause more grief for support. The Variax is not an easy product to support as it is. -
The Amplifi has effects built in so you don't need an X3 in front of it.

Twin Reverb is also a good clean sound. Start with amp only and work from there. It should not be distorted at all.

Yes the XLR outputs are Mono. If you want stereo, you can use both of them and mix at the mixing board. (Or pan everything to L or R on the pod) I find XLR to be the way to go because it's balanced and you are less likely to get ground loop noise with it.
