Question 3 is yes and no. Yes you will run out of DSP depending on what you select. Be prepared to spend some time getting everything configured the way you want.

Just curious, how does the Peavey Vypyr compare in tone quality to the PODHD ?

An interesting trick for volume boost is to put a small amount of compression after the amp. Be careful when dialing in the amount of compression. What this does is make chords sound quieter and single notes louder. More compression the quieter the chords. This way it does it for you automatically without hitting a switch. But it can be a little tricky to get it set just right. You're mileage may vary...

I play nothing but metal and think the amps we have are more than plenty. I use Angel F. Although Soldano is very tempting. Now to all the anal metal heads out there... My wife told me before we got married that she was very anal. After we got married I learned there was two meanings to this.

This reminds me of an old beer commercial. Great taste, less filling. The HD amps sound much better, just not as many.

The couple gotcha's: 1) Make sure Input one is set to Guitar and Input two is set to something else, like Variax. Otherwise the input signal is way too hot. The default is set both to the same and it's screwed up a lot of people. 2) Input Z setting is important to your tone. Don't just set it on Auto, try the other settings. 3) The EQ sucks. Some idiot at Line6 decided that an EQ should use Percentage instead of HZ. 4) It takes a while to get the tone you really like. Be patient and spend time reading and trying things. In the end, it's worth it. There's a lot of really helpful people on this forum that will do their best to get you through the initial learning curve.

HD500X really bad sounding overdrive and distortion, is it normal?
joel_brown replied to bluesoverdrive's topic in POD HD
Reduce your Input Z Setting to 32k. -
I used both the Logidy cab IRs and 3rd party. I still returned it. As I said, it just wasn't much if any better than what comes in the PODHD. Maybe I just didn't find the right IR but I tried a lot of them.
-
I tried it for cab IRs and returned it after a week. Logidy said they get a lot of returns from Line6 customers. It sounded nice but didn't sound much, if any, better that then cabs already in the PODHD. I didn't try the Reverb IRs. Not sure which one you're asking about.

I do the same thing but it's set to Studio Direct output - not that one is better than the other. The different settings are just different EQ curves. I have a JCM900 into a 4x12 cab. Been gigging out with this for about 4 years. I actually have a second JCM900 and cab and do stereo and place them on opposite sides of the stage. I run a Delay with the left output set to 20ms delay that feeds the second amp.

Interesting but basically it makes everything equally out of tune (or in tune if you're a glass half full type of person), regardless of position.

I stopped updating at 2.21. I didn't have the glitches that the last two updates fixed.

Can a FBV EXPRESS MkII control a Pod HD (bean) and another MIDI device?

Input Setting is the most important. If you have Input 1 and Input 2 set to guitar it will make it squeal. Atleast it did for me.
-
It's on the Internet it must be true...
-
Make sure your input setting is Guitar for Input 1 and Variax or Mic for Input 2. Also try different output settings other than Power Amp Stack. All these different settings are just different EQ curves. I use the PODHD into the FX return of a Marshall JCM900 and like Studio Direct the best. But whatever sounds the best for you is all that matters.
-
Yesterday I plugged straight into my Marshall JCM900 and 4x12 cabinet and cranked it up then plugged into my PODHD which then goes into the FX return of the Marshall JCM900 and 4x12. I still like the PODHD setup better, which can also do stereo into both my Marshalls. Everyone once in a while I like to back to back compare it. There are lots of different ways to setup these PODHDs. I'm sure some people have better tones than others and some people won't be happy with any tone. But I'm glad I bought the PODHD and didn't spend a butt load more on a Kemper or AXE. I like hearing the complaints and solutions on this forum but it's also nice to, once in a while, hear something nice.

HD Pro - any workarounds for delay when changing patches?
joel_brown replied to ChristopherDuncan's topic in POD HD
I've never had a problem switching patches within a song. Although I'm used to timing it just right for the few ms delay between one patch and another. I've never had anything, other than analogue pedals, that didn't have a delay. I thought the PODHD was actually pretty good about this. I don't use a lot of reverb of delay effects so maybe that effects it more. -
Playing live and making tweaks on the fly ? Sheeesh, I have enough to do when playing live, don't want to even think about tweaks. Even then, the interface on the PODHD is fine for me on the rare times I've had to make a tweak. I'd rather see some time put into making a better EQ interface - I know that topic has been beaten to death.

Australia ? I have some friends down there. They keep telling me to look out for the Drop Bears. Then there's the 4,000 other living things down there that will kill you. On top of all that the water in the toilet goes the wrong way...
-
It's my understanding that the looper in the bean can't be controlled with any external controller. Only the buttons on the PODHD Bean itself.
-
You're not an oddball, I do the same thing. Noisegate, compressor, a little delay, and very little reverb. Then actually play the guitar not the effects.
-
I have a PODHD Bean and FBV Express and can't get the looper to activate using it. I'm very sure I read somewhere that this feature isn't available. If you find a way to get it to work, I'd be interested to know too.

What I saw was the current DSP chip is $20 and the better DSP chip was around $200. Fairly significant jump in price. Factor in development costs and it could make things very expensive. Of course putting in two $20 DSP chips sounds like an option but other unknown factors of how difficult it is to run that particular DSP chip in a multi DSP environment could have made that cost prohibitive. Memory and other support chips also come into play. This isn't Windows or Unix. You just don't plop in another chip and go faster. Yes it would have been nice if the PODHD picked up model packs and connections that the previous one had. Personally it didn't do anything for me but I don't know if I'm the typical customer or not. I'm the happiest I've been with any modeler so far in this price range. Could it be better ? Sure. My biggest gripe is the EQ. I don't run dual amps and have plenty of processing power. The routing is awesome and was the biggest feature, other than tone and price point, that got me to buy it. Do I say bad things about PODHD ? Yes I've complained about a number of items. Will I buy another Line6 product ? Sure, unless there's something else better in my price range. Thank you Digital_Igloo for posting. I know what it's like to be on the other side. I retired from a large and sometimes controversial software company.

Good post but other than Kemper and AXE for way more money, I don't see any other viable choices. I would think Line6 knows, or atleast believes this too. Otherwise they'd be scrambling to do what you said. With that said, you'd think the competition would be scrambling to bring something out that would lure Line6 customers away. But all I see is stuff that's almost as good for the same or less money. I already spent the money, I'm not going to spend it again for something that's almost as good as what I already have.
