  1. “Amp in the room” feel isn’t based on frequency response alone, but also has a lot to do with the dispersion of specific frequencies relative to the diameter of the speaker. A 12” guitar speaker sends a lot of its high frequencies out straight ahead, without “dispersing” them. Room reflections will cause you to hear them after they reflect/diffuse off the walls. So, stand in any part of a room, and the amp will sound different. This is less so with the laney’s, which, like PA speakers, do better at dispersing all frequencies in every direction. This difference can make it difficult to blend your sounds together. Your laney’s, even in “guitar cab” mode or with an IR, will still be dispersing the high-end of a vintage 30’s frequencies a lot wider than a vintage 30 itself does. It’ll be hard to get them to feel in sync sonically. i think this is what the line 6 Powercab is trying to address. It’s a flat response 12” guitar speaker, that will disperse frequencies the same way a regular guitar speaker does. Hence, the true “amp in the room” feel. If you use an IR with it, then it turns on the tweeter, and the amp in the room feel will change.
  2. This should not happen. There should be no additional latency on the xlr outs compared to the main 1/4” outs. If the latency is in fact due to the helix, and not from some additional PA equipment that the XLR signal is routing through, then I’d put in a support ticket with line 6. They’ll likely have you re-flash the latest firmware first, so you could go ahead and try that now.
  3. No need to go bad-mouthing them everywhere. Yes, of course the product is just a rebranded product from another one of the parent company’s brands. Companies do these marketing tactics all the time. No need for them spend a bunch of time and money adjusting/changing the speaker’s components at it’s price range. If it works and you like it, great. If not, leave them be.
  4. Mic pre’s on most equipment are typically more about headroom and clarity than they are coloring the tone. They’re designed to be transparent. So no, you won’t typically hear much, if any, difference in low-level vs high-end mixer pre-amps...until you’re using a lot of them simultaneously. Then, the better headroom / noise floor really becomes apparent.
  5. How are you using it? Are you just replacing your pedals, or are you using the amp and cab models too?
  6. Update. The k12h-200tc didn’t have enough range in the high-end, whether it was in my 112 spider valve or a separate dedicated enclosure. Ended up up getting a yahama DXR10, and it’s just fantastic. Better sound than the other speakers I’ve tried (Alto TS series, JBL Eon 610, Eon One). So much headroom and clarity comes out of that speaker.
  7. Gator’s small mixer bags are good for that stuff. I use one of the 12x12’s to carry my “other gear” (relay and in-ear receiver, DI, iKlip, Mic, etc...), cables, and an emergency backup system. Good bag construction and padding. I guess I could carry it all in one bag, but I have an RBX2E on my back. It’s nice to carry two bags and split the weight evenly, versus one heavy bag with helix and everything else. If I carried helix on my back, I’d keep everything in the helix backpack.
  8. I’m not positive they had the cabs sims built into the amp models on the mkii’s. I just believe they did based on the sound. The mkii had much better capabilities and options for effects and routing. It was more like a pod xt live built into an amp.

    Making the jump

+1 on going full vs lt. the scribbles, extra exp pedal input, extra I/O, and two extra footswitch buttons are very worth it if you’re coming over from an elaborate pedalboard.
  10. I have a Celestion K12H-200TC “full range” 12 speaker arriving tomorrow, which I’ll first be throwing in a spider valve 112 for fun. The spider valve’s are great tube combos for a helix. Perhaps with this speaker, it’ll sound good with my IR’s turned on as well. I use an additional frfr speaker on stage only when some stage volume is needed (I still send direct to FOH). This could be a good amp-style alternative like the new powercabs.
  11. I know tone is subjective, but there’s typically guitar tones that we all generally identify as good. For situations like the one in this thread, I think it would be cool for L6 to have some really good presets pre-loaded from respected players. Then, include a small booklet with a paragraph or two from each artist concerning the tone and how they built it. This way, newcomers could “reverse engineer” good patches to see why they sound good.
  12. I still have my mk1 112 and 212. I’ve owned both the mk1 and mk2 versions. I always felt like they had the cab sims turned off on the mk1’s, but left them in on the Mk2’s. I loved the extra features on the 2, but I never could get as good of a straight amp tone out of the XT-based models of the 2 versus the pod2.0-based models of the 1. The 2 has a similar sound as to when I run a cab model into an actual guitar cabinet. The metal blue, metal amber, and insane amber models on the 1 are fantastic. Now, the amps are my on-stage guitar cabs when I need to have some guitar sound on stage with my helix. They work great for that too. ...I think I’m going to go test this theory with my Pod XT Live.
  13. No, the spider valve will not make a good pa-style speaker sound. Use it for practicing by turning off your cab sim or IR on the helix patch, then plugging into the effect return. Many people do this for their main setup. I used a pod hd500x and a spider valve 112 together on stage for years.
  14. Helix Floor, 2.54. I noticed that on a 10-band EQ block, the initial change from 0 to -0.1 doesn’t show the “-“ symbol. The symbol doesn’t appear until you get to -0.2. I havent’t checked to see if it does it on other EQ blocks.
  15. +1 Sounds like you have a cab model in your preset on the Helix. A cab model going into a guitar cabinet typically makes what people call a "muddy" or "lifeless" sound. To start, make sure you're using just the Amp model, and not Amp+Cab. Make sure there's no Cab or IR models in your chain too.
  16. Do the footswitches still work? It could be that the ribbon cable connecting the footswitch PCB’s has come loose from the main PCB inside the chassis. That’d be the first thing I would check, especially since it’s used and just went through the abuse of being shipped.
  17. +1 it’s my main amp model too. I have a footswitch that switches the gain on the amp between low and high. Also, it responds well to the fulltone OCD and tube screamer models. It’s my favorite amp amongst all the great amps on Helix. I’m using a joost alnico IR with a bit of post EQ to even it out.
  18. That’s exactly what I did with my dc-3g. Popped it apart and modded it to be an in-line brick. Now it’s much easier to deal with. I’m not sure why L6 doesn’t have them built this way, like they do with their other ac adapters.
  19. I have a discontinued Ultimate Series One bag that fits my helix floor perfectly. I keep spares of the basic gig necessities in the bag pockets with it. I also have a small gator 12x12 mixer bag that I use for all my other gear and cables. I found that keeping it all in just one bag ended up giving me one 30-ish pound bag. I’d rather have two 15 pounds bags, which makes it balanced and much easier to walk with (playing downtown Nashville involves a lot of walking). I have my RBX2E dual guitar bag on my back, so having a smaller balanced weight in each hand is nice. Also, with the gator bag holding my other gear and cables, I can just throw everything in there. When I keep all in one bag, I’m meticulously placing everything to make sure it all fits. That adds time to my teardown. If I didn’t use the ultimate bag, I’d probably use a gator g club bag.
  20. I haven’t noticed it. Legacy effects are working fine / properly for me on my floor and native.
  21. Those effects are from the pre-HD days. I doubt you’ll see them on the helix platform. We’re fortunate enough that we got the HD/M series effects. I think you’ll find that you can get very close or better from the effects already in Helix. I gotta say though, that Bronze Master is uniquely cool. :)
  22. Sounds like an A/B before the HX effects, and an A/B after, is the way to go. HX effects wasn’t designed around multi-input and multi-output, but rather more towards pedalboard integration. If you wanted to have both instruments plugged in, and outputs to separate locations with separate sounds, a Helix Floor would be the “one-stop ship†piece of gear.
  23. I actually avoid using the volume knobs on the helix if whatever I’m sending a signal to has its own volume control. Unless you can’t reach your guitar amp during the gig, I’d recommend using a send block for the amp output. Then, just put the cab block at the end of the chain, and the send block for the amp right before it. Or, should they need separate EQ, split the path right before the send block and place the cab and amp sends on different paths. The send block can then be muted with a footswitch.
