This is very true... I quit monkeying around with amps as much myself anymore, but the guy that built my two custom amps kinda chuckles when people make it out like there are so many "boutique amp designs". Yes, there are a lot of great innovations and tweaks to existing circuits, but the wheel has not been totally reinvented that much. -
I just use my Kemper if I fry my Helix, and vice versa... Don't be hatin on the P&W... I do part time pro, as well as P&W the weekends.

I used to plug into tube power amps into guitar cabs with all modelers, but my 15" coaxial powered monitor moves plenty of air and I'm loving cab Sims and IR's.

What tricks do you guys use for getting a good metal/high gain tone?

I get plenty of air movement and volume with my 15" coaxial powered monitor on a pole behind my head... don't miss the large guitar cab at all anymore. Church is not ear though and not the same. However, it's all about little too no stage volume there. -

I buy patches and tweak them, I create patches from scratch... I appreciate both methods. I like having extra opinions/takes on a tone.

You can take every amp in Helix and change cabs, mics, IR's, eq and come up with an almost infinite array of tones. I have a Kemper, too, and owned both Axe fx ii xl+ and ax8. I can take Helix or the Kemper and get whatever I want out of them. I use Helix when I want a small simple rig and Kemper when I want my big Mac daddy... the other is the backup rig for the one in use. Hope this helps.

I've never tried the Friedman at a gig and haven't hooked it up to the PA at the house and listened to both. Guess I'll have to give it a whirl...

Idid have to knock the highs off of a few of them... I like a little bite, but smoothed out a little.

I've found mine a little dark compared to anything else. I've been using 15" coaxial powered monitor more than I have the Friedman. Not saying it's not good, but I'd have to re-EQ all my patches or start using the global EQ (which would then require me me to make more adjustments on the PA channel).
