  1. I've noticed that when I use a drop tuning on the Alt Tunings if I palm mute on strings higher than the low E it makes an odd warbling sound. I updated the firmware but that seems to make no change. I have seen from other posts this could be a setup issue, but they were having problems with all the alt tunings. When I use a standard tuning so all the strings are dropped evenly it works fine, it's just drop tunings that act weird. I have debated removing the non-Variax pickup as I never use it anyway (my rig is Shuriken Variax Sr270 into a Helix Floor), but I wanna check to see if I can fix this problem without. I tune the guitar to D standard physically.
  2. I wanted to ask a question because I've not seen anything about this anywhere else. When you change models, or if you have a model with a switch setup that goes between different pickups, is there a noise gap?
  3. The Shuriken is unique in many ways from other Variax guitars, one of the ways is the 4 Artist's programmed user presets on the model knob. If you want to replicate the artist's setup you will have to tune the low E string down to D, which will make the custom tunings sound correctly in the USER and SHURIKEN banks. None of the other banks contain tuning offsets and assume that the guitar is tuned to standard E. If you want to load the presets with their respective custom tunings, make sure to set the Alternate Tuning Knob to the MODEL 7 position. If all that is a bit too much ninja for you, feel free to keep the guitar in standard E and set the Alternate Tuning Knob to STANDARD or any of the other tuning presets. Note: If you perform a factory reset of the Shuriken, it will default to the standard JTV model pack. To re install the unique Shuriken pack, download it from here: http://line6.com/data/6/0a020a3d63a058e7eb2d0d632/file/zip/varaix-shuriken-bundle.zip All custom tunings saved with these presets require the low E string tuned down a whole step to D, and that the Alternate Tuning Knob is set to MODEL. USER I Position 1: Post Mortem Spank Spank guitar body with Spank pickups and drop D tuning (sounds D A D G B E) - Note that the two lowest strings are muted. Position 2: 8 Collateral Neutral body with JTV89 pickups and very special custom tuning (sounds D A A A A A) - Note that low E and A strings are tuned down one octave. Position 3: 7 Collateral Neutral body with Lester pickups and another very special custom tuning (sounds A E E E E E) - Note that the physical "A" string (tuned to E) is muted. Position 4: Collateral Aco Acoustic J body with DADGAD tuning (sounds D A D G A D). Position 5: Collateral Spank Spank body with Spank pickups and DADGAD tuning (sounds D A D G A D). USER II Position 1: Octave Standard Neutral body with JTV89 pickups and standard tuning down one octave (sounds E A D G B E). Position 2: B Standard Neutral body with Lester pickups and everything tuned down a fourth (sounds B E A D F# B ). Position 3: Standard Neutral body with Lester pickups and standard tuning (sounds E A D G B E). Position 4: Acoustic Standard Acoustic D body with standard tuning (sounds E A D G B E). Position 5: Spank Standard Spank body with Spank pickups and standard tuning (sounds E A D G B E). USER III Position 1: Tumbi Lester’s Banjo with a custom tuning (sounds D A D G B A). Position 2: 7 Sick Riff Neutral body with Lester pickups and a custom tuning (sounds A E A E F# B ) Position 3: Invincible Aco Acoustic D body with a drop D tuning (sounds D A D G B E). Note that the two lowest strings are muted. Position 4: Invincible Chorus Special Bird body with Lester pickups and a custom tuning (sounds E B E B B E) - Note that the "D", "G", and "B" strings are set to 20% of normal volume, high E string set to 90% of normal volume. Position 5: Invincible G Neutral body with JTV89 pickups and a custom tuning (sounds G D F# A A A). USER IV Position 1: Acoustic DADGAD Acoustic D body with a DADGAD tuning (sounds D A D G A D). Position 2: Acoustic Drop D Acoustic D body with a drop D tuning (sounds D A D G B E). Position 3: Drop D Octave Neutral body with JTV 89 pickups and a drop D tuning one octave lower (sounds D A D G B E) - Note that all strings except the lowest "D" string are tuned down one octave. 4. Gracias!
  5. I’ve been thinking about getting a Shuriken and Helix LT, but given it’s been a few years since they were released I was curious if there is any product refresh coming that I should wait for. I know there are frequent software updates, but curious if any hardware updates are inbound. thanks!
  6. Greetings, I used a POD XT Live with a Variax 300 for a few years and I remember using my PC to create my own tones, including a custom metal tone, 12 string acoustic tone, and a sitar tone. The Pod came with a physical manual that was easy to flip through, and I had no problem editing things with the PC for both the POD and the Variax. The Helix Floor and the Shuriken are different beasts, and I am experimenting with the software and trying to compare it to the Pod/old Variax stuff. There are many new options and features that I need to learn about, and I find it easy to get lost in the options, or add something that mucks up the tone. I was in a motorcycle accident which messed with my memory a little bit, and I can't recall exactly how I used the old software as far as combining my Variax edits with the POD edits. Other than reading through the PDF multiple times, what are some good sources to learn about each feature of the Helix? I will be looking to create a unique metal tone, a couple of good acoustic tones, and will make a sitar tone, to start with. I am also looking to experiment with alternate tunings. I will be looking to record with the Helix, and I want to learn about using the MIDI capabilities. I am going to be getting MIDI software which will allow me to play different instrument sounds with the guitar, and I am wondering if I can somehow implement such software with the footswitches on the Helix. I am also wondering if it is possible to record what I play on the Shuriken/Helix into a *.mid file for further editing, or to import them into Powertab or some other tablature software. I have a Roland UM-One USB/Midi cable, with the in and out connected to the Helix. Any resources to help a newbie would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks! Quietus

A: JTV guitars use a lithium-ion battery similar to that of a camcorder. A fully charged battery can deliver at least 12 hours of continuous performance. There is a four light battery life indicator on the battery compartment on the back of the JTV guitars that can be viewed by pressing the round flush black button next to the lights. 4 LEDs = 9+ hours 3 LEDs = 6+ hours 2 LEDs = 3+ hours 1 LED = less than 3 hours 1 LED blinking = less than 1 hour, recharge battery Note: Using a non-Line 6 JTV battery will void your warranty and may damage your JTV. Q: How can I power my JTV without a battery? A: There are 2 ways to supply power to the Variax without a battery. When connected to VDI Digital Input equipped hardware, such as a POD X3 Live, power is supplied via this connection. Or, use the optional XPS-DI direct box/power supply and TRS cable. With this box you can power the Variax and it also works as an A/B box to send your signal out of a DI to go direct to a board or acoustic amplifier with certain models. When powering the JTV guitar with either TRS or VDI connection, it is suggested to remove the battery from the guitar. Q: How long does it take to fully charge a dead battery for the JTV guitars? A: It takes about 12 hours to fully charge a dead JTV battery, but leaving it to charge overnight is a good time to do this. You can get a 4-6 hour play time by charging the JTV battery for 30-45 minutes. Q: What does the indicator light mean on the JTV battery charger? A: A solid RED light on the charger indicates that the battery is charging. A blinking RED light means that either the batter is fully charged, or the battery was inserted improperly into the charger and needs to be re-seated properly. If you know the battery needs charging and you get a blinking RED light when it is put into the charger, please re-seat the battery in the charger. Tuning Gears JTV-59US and JTV-89US guitars will have Hipshot Classic Guitar Tuning Machines. They are sleek, precision-built tuners with an ultra-smooth 18:1 gear ratio. The JTV-69US guitars feature the Hipshot Grip-Lock Locking Guitar Tuning Machines that are staggered in height for maximum tuning stability. For the Korean James Tyler Variax guitars, we went with 16:1 sealed tuners on all three models. They are die-cast, modern-built, solid tuners. They are sealed permanently and lubricated to work smoothly for years to come without slipping or binding. As with the JTV-69US, we went with locking and staggered versions of these 16:1 sealed tuners. As with the staggered locking tuners, the locking pole pieces within each tuner are staggered as well to match the size the tuner. They are measured 23.4mm (x2 forlow E/A strings), 21.9mm (x2 for D/G strings), and 20.4mm (x2 for B/high E strings). New HD Acoustic Models Q: When were the new HD acoustic models added to the JTV guitars? A: The new HD acoustic models were added in firmware 1.81 and are included in all newer firmware versions of the JTV guitars after that. Q: What does the Tone knob do on the newer HD acoustic models on the JTV guitars? A: The Tone knob on the new HD acoustic models is used to adjust the amount of body resonance for the model, but it was also specially programmed to have the top 10% of the Tone knob completely remove this resonance (at the 90-100% position) for those that prefer to remove that sound from the new acoustic models to closely resemble the flat nature of the older acoustic models from previous Variax guitars. Alternate Tuning Knob Q: How does the Alternate Tuning Knob on the JTV guitars work? A: The Alternate Tuning Knob on the JTV guitars can be used to any of the preset tunings that are saved to the knob. This knob has 12 settings including two labeled 'Model' and 'Standard' Set to 'Model,' the Alternate Tuning Knob lets you access the alternate tunings you created using the Variax Workbench software. These tunings are stored on your Variax's Model knob. Set to 'Standard,' the Alternate Tuning knob overrides saved tunings to set every model to standard EADGBE tuning. The Alt Tune knob's remaining 10 settings are hand-picked for each stle of James Tyler Variax guitar. Q: How do I reset the tunings? A: The on-board factory tuning reset feature was removed starting with HD firmware (2.x and higher). That procedure was to plug in while holding down the model knob. To reset the tunings in firmware 2.0+, they have to be loaded from the Workbench HD program. A: First, ensure that you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the Workbench interface from the Line 6 Downloads page. Then, ensure that the battery of the James Tyler Variax is charged and inserted into the guitar. Connect the Variax Workbench interface to the computer via USB, and also connect the James Tyler Variax guitar to the Workbench interface via the included VDI/Network cable. Lastly, connect a 1/4" cable into the guitar's output jack to power on the guitar (as the Workbench interface DOES NOT provide power to the guitar, this 'dummy' plug is necessary for the interface to recognize the JTV). The other end of the 1/4" cable does not need to be plugged into anything. You should see 2 green lights on the Workbench interface when everything is connected and being recognized properly. Factory Reset and Updating the Flash Memory Q: Why doesn't the Factory Reset procedure described in the manual work? A: The reset procedure described in the JTV manual was removed from the JTV guitars to make room in the memory for the Variax HD Acoustic models that were added in flash memory update v1.80. All JTV guitars with flash memory v1.80 and newer no longer have this factory reset procedure available. To perform a factory reset, re-install, rollback, or update the flash memory on the James Tyler Variax guitars, please use the following link: Variax Reflash and Software update F.A.Q. Q: If I tune physical strings on the guitar down or up on the JTV can I use the virtual capo? A: It is not recommended as it could cause audible anomalies. The guitars were designed to re-tune from E Standard tuning. Using the Virtual Capo to tune the guitar from any other tuning is unsupported.
  8. Hello everyone, after several months of use I can say that for me learning to use this combo Shuriken + Helix, you can create any kind of sound and be inspired for your music! Surely you have to understand its operation and try not to get lost in the thousand parameters, but in my opinion once everything is set correctly and learned the operation the benefits will be far greater than the doubts
  9. headstock cracked. I contacted my tech to patch it but it won't look the same. does Line 6 offer just the neck for purchase. PS- not covered under warranty Thanks
  10. Trying to program different guitar models to change via Snapshots. SO I programmed a preset with different effects, then in the Variax settings to "global" and then hold and dialled until my desired guitar model was shown in brackets. Saved the preset then changed to snapshot 2 turned the knob until I had my other desired guitar model into brackets and saved again. Now when I change the snapshots, all the effects on/off work as expected, but for the guitar model to change it doesn't work reliably. Sometimes it stays at the model the switch on the guitar is set to. Sometimes it switches to the right guitar model 2 or 3 times, and sometimes it even selects a complete different model. I programmed Snapshot 1 with Shuriken and Snapshot 2 with Leicester 5. Coming from a preset where I used acoustic 2 it should change to Shuriken, but stays on acoustic2. Then I change to snapshot 2 and I get the right Leicester 5, than back to Snap 1 I get the right Shuriken, but then back to Snap two all of a sudden I get Leicester-1 Am I missing something ? 11. Hey I'm a proud Helix user and am very interested in the Shuriken and was just wondering if we might ever see the Shuriken with different woods or finishes?
  12. Would it be possible to add a new modern pickup model or two, to the Variax software/firmware, to bring it in line with Shuriken's modern good looks? I'm sure JTV owners probably wouldn't mind this either. I know a lot of folks like EMGs, Bare Knuckle, Fishman, DiMarzio, etc. I'm sure people have lots of opinions on which they'd wish for most. Would love to know how people feel about this one.
  13. When I got my Variax Shuriken guitar, I had to arrange the external wah-wah pedal with my PODXTLIVE. By doing that, the sound coming out when using the wah-wah pedal is completely different. Originally the connection was Guitar "in" to wah-wah pedal "out" from wah-wah to "input" POD pedal and "output" to the Amp. Now with the Shurikan-Variax connected (network cable) to the POD pedal I have to use "output" from the POD "in" to wah-wah pedal "out" from wah-wah to the Amp. That make's differents in loudness (is louder), and the movement of the foot (up & down) has to be minimal, otherwise, notes are almost muted. Is there any way to somehow make this signal flow better; or do I have to get used to it that way?
  14. I'm new to the whole Variax thing (Shuriken and Helix floor) and, after reading all manuals and looking up every video I could find, trying to see if I have a lemon or am doing something wrong. Goal: I want two presets, one acoustic and one Lester-based, each with four snapshots (chorus, distortion, etc.) and tuned differently. I have the Shuriken tuned to drop D, want the Lester to remain in drop D, but have the acoustic tuned to standard. I would love for all five acoustics to be accessible via the pickup selector, but that isn't critical. What I really want is everything run from the floor. When I hit the Acoustic button, I want acoustic in standard tuning to come up. When I switch to electric, I want the Lester to come up and in the native drop D. I really don't want to have to hit a foot switch and futz with the guitar dials as I need to do it quickly. FYI, each time I edit, I resave religiously. I am having the following problems: 1) When I switch back and forth between the two presets, I often seem to end up on Jazz 5, no matter what I do with the model knob. To get acoustic sounds on the acoustic preset, I have to turn the knob away, and then turn it back to acoustic. 2) I don't see any consistency in the tuning between the two. Sometimes it seems to change correctly, and other times it stays with what was on the previous preset. I could probably fix #2 by altering the acoustic model in workbench (?), as I would likely mostly want acoustics in standard and electrics in drop D or something else. But, that wouldn't seem to solve #1. I swear I have tried every combination of Variax setting (Global, Per Preset) and get no consistency. Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.
  15. Hi! I'm new to all this and recently got a Shuriken Variax and a Firehawk FX (no, I didn't go for the Helix as my bank account didn't allow it). ;) I have a couple of questions around the full functionality of the Firehawk utilising the Shuriken via VDI. 1. Is there a way to specifically control the individual string settings (other than the tuning)? e.g. volume levels of each string? The reason I ask this is that some of the default pre-sets I go to seem to only have the specific strings enabled. For example, on the "01C. American Clean" patch: - <position> = <String enabled> - Position 1 = Only top E string - Position 2 = All strings ok - Position 3 = E B G D A not working but bottom E working - Position 4 = Bottom E and A ok rest seems soft - Position 5 = All ok but soft when compared to position 2 2. Somewhat relates to 1 but via the Firehawk iOS app, when in Variax mode, it only looks like you can control the tuning on each string. Any way of configuring each string settings or do I need to go into the Workbench? Pretty sure I'll have more questions depending on the responses I get! Look forward to it and thanks in advance! Nigel
  16. Just wondering if anyone knows how to use the 2 together. I plug the Shuriken in to the Variax port on the HD500 (not the +, this is the first version) and I get the guitar to power on the Variax mode but I can't figure out how to bypass the settings on the HD500 to hear just the sounds being produced by the Shuriken. Does anyone know what I need to do? Any help is much appreciated ESPECIALLY since the battery on my Shuriken isn't powering the guitar so I have no choice but to use the HD500 to power the guitar right now.
  17. I thought this might be of interest to any Variax owners out there! https://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Line-6-We-are-seeking-candidates-for-1-on-1-product-feedback/869224-23508
