If you could say, I would be interested to know what the general cause is of a truly bricked device?
-
I'm on 2.81. Not sure about your problem specifically, but I've noticed something that seems related. I use the spdif output, and sometimes when I turn helix on, there is no output. Unplugging and plugging the spdif cable from helix or going into the global menu and toggling the digital output from spdif to aes/ebu and back gets output.

I get that error when using firefox, not other browsers.

If your guitar is in the vicinity of your computer, that could be a significant source. I recently went through this same experience and the thing that minimized it the most, to acceptable levels, was turning off c-states and speedstep in the computer's bios. Can't recall, but there were also some other obscure settings I changed that might have made a very small difference. The unwanted noise is still there, but I have to move the guitar to within ~30cm of the computer to really notice it anymore. Before I could be a couple meters away before it started to disappear. It's amazing how much stuff emits radiation that the guitar pickups pickup. Some things can even be picked up by the unplugged end of the guitar cable. But most things have to be about 10cm from the pickups though. From a laser mouse, backlit keyboard, monitor, helix itself and it's screen and scribble strips, power outlets, routers, etc. And each thing has it's own audio characteristics, in particular the mouse and keyboard.
-
That's true, but the op had to take steps (I did as well), to work around an underlying problem that's still there. That's all.
-
At the risk of stating the obvious, the problem really isn't solved. There is an underlying problem with the way the hardware is communicating with a computer system over usb, and may be manifesting in ways other than the update process.

It's a flanger. A Line 6 Original and pretty versatile in what it can do. I doubt if the effect designer will show up here though. Maybe a chance at thegearpage.net. Your best bet would be to just start digging into it. Start changing parameters and use your ears to build relationships in your mind between the parameter's names and the resulting sounds. That way you don't have to rely on someone else's description, either dry technical or wordy subjectiveness. This particular effect is cool because it has an envelope controller. It can be triggered by picking.

2.8 bug with snapshots and tap tempo transparent mode
duncann replied to tourultimate's topic in Helix
I tried on a new preset and it appears to work correctly. -
This is a cool new feature, but I wish they would have left the arrows always the same (top pointing north, bottom south) and just reversed the behavior, lol. Clearly Line 6 doesn't understand the people whose brains are wired backwards. :) For the reverse delay, I'm not hearing any dry signal when mix is at 100%.

Posted this in the bug topic sticky. Don't know for sure if it's an actual bug (looks like it is), but it's repeatable and sure puts a damper (makes it useless in this situation) on Helix's reamping capability. Device: Helix Floor 2.8 OS: Windows 10 1903 DAW: Reaper 5.9.8.1 Helix midi globals: Base channel: 1 Tempo select: per snapshot Midi over usb: on All others: off Reaper track setup (no input or output fx on any tracks): 1: parent track: input1+input2, output to master 2: dry - content: previously captured dry signal input: 7 output: 3/4 3: wah - content: midi items with previously captured data from exp2 (cc#2, 0-127) input: midi: line 6 helix channel 1 output: midi hardware - line 6 helix channel 1 4: control - content: midi items containing snapshot changes (cc#69, 0-7) input: none output: midi hardware - line 6 helix channel 1 HX Edit consistently loses connection when track 3 has data that controls exp2 that is within a certain time preceding a snapshot change on track 4. The connection loss occurs a certain time after the snapshot change. The amount of time is always the same for the project I discovered this in, which is approximately 4 seconds. I looked in a different project and the time was different but still always the same within that project. There is also an audio anomaly giving away that a disconnect is about to happen; in my case, exp2 controls a wah and shortly before the disconnect, the wah gets 'stuck', or Helix stops responding to the midi data being sent from Reaper. The reconnect button at the bottom of HX Edit that appears is always successful in reconnecting once playback has stopped. If I try and reconnect while playback is still going HX Edit spits out a couple of error dialogs: "Failed to get impulse names. Service is not online. [code: -8207]" and "Failed to get preset names. Service is not online. [code: -8207]" If either track 3 or 4 is muted, HX Edit does not lose connection. If HX Edit is not running, everything appears to work as expected. I can also cause a consistent Helix crash (unresponsive to buttons and switches, blank screen) with the above conditions in place and by enabling sending the midi clock from Reaper to Helix, and enabling receive midi clock over usb in Helix. Separate from the above, I've also noticed that on windows 10 there is a new entry in device manager (with show hidden devices) under universal serial bus controllers put there by connecting Helix to the computer with 2.8 installed on the device: Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed), device status is code 45 whether Helix is turned on or not.

Same thing happened to mine (win10 1903). Nerve-wracking while it's happening, lol. It seems, for some people, that the new drivers and/or the updater are not installing correctly. On my system, I had the updater and hx edit installed to a non-default location. What I ended up doing was uninstalling all traces of anything related to Helix and then reinstalled everything (including drivers for devices I don't have) without changing the default location. Now when I ran the updater, Helix was recognized and the update could finish. I wonder if adding an additional instruction stating to uninstall previous HX Edit installations prior to updating to HX Edit 2.80 would be helpful.

Geoff Tate would be a good example of such a singer. As good as Queensryche's music was for the 80s, what would they have been without Geoff Tate?
-
In the meantime, everyone relax.

This is well put except for the case of what if you're writing a song about the millisecond length of an IR?
-
I think the closest you could get to that would be the auto volume echo legacy effect. Set time and speed at zero, swell controls the duration of the swell, which I wish could go longer than the current max allows, and mix at 100%. Depth adds some sort of modulation. You could also try the autoswell dynamic effect, but it can be hard to work with and unpredictable, so if you try it be prepared for a lot of trial and error.

It will be in the next update, in spring sometime.

I'm waiting for the day someone invents self-healing strings.

I took it, but was pointless for my situation, same as DunedInDragon. But it looks like an interesting product nonetheless.

One way would be to simply assign the mix parameter of the reverb to a switch, specifying the min and max values. The switch can be momentary or latching, the LED red, and the scribble strip can even be labeled "more reverb". With the reverb block selected, hit the menu button on the device and then controller assign. From there it should be apparent. To customize the color and scribble strip bring up the command center. I find it easier to do on HX edit: right-click on the parameter you want to assign to a switch, then go to the bypass/controller assign tab.

The lack of excitement during a firmware update, as suggested by cruisinon2, can be decreased by executing it during the threat of a power outage.

Yay! They added a swap for up and down. Thanks Helix team.
