It's time that this perpetuating thread be manifest as a Poll on the TGP Forums. To measure the two camps regarding opinions of Helix's Tuner stability (steady enough for me vs way too jumpy and erratic), the following Poll is now on TGP Forums: https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/helixs-tuner-how-do-you-feel-about-its-stability.1825918/ Cast your vote!

DiD: The occasional reports of Joystick problems (here or elsewhere on the Internet) do not seem to correlate to a particular firmware version. What version of firmware are you running? In your original post, when you mentioned the joystick was no longer responding to pushes nor select, is only the Z-Axis function inoperative? Do the other 6 directional functions still work?
-
Helix Native does not require use of a Helix. The screen scaling problem exhibited by Helix Editor is a well known frustration encountered by many. For months, Helix Editor users have been reporting the problem. It is a well known issue to Line 6. It is eagerly anticipated that the forthcoming improved version of Helix Editor, and the new Helix Native (expected late June/"by the end of Spring"), will be contemporary applications capable of delivering the full display capabilities of the current Windows and Mac operating systems.

Voted it up! Redundancy for the Joystick's Seven (7) essential functions is an excellent suggestion! To attract more votes, you may wish to post your IdeaScale link to TGP and MLP Forums. The Joystick is incredibly useful and indeed vital to Helix operations. It is the Achille's Tendon of the Helix! Without it functioning properly, there are some functions that cannot be accomplished (unless the unit is connected to a computer and the Editor is used. Even then, I'm not sure that the Global Settings categories can be accessed if the Joystick's Rotation and 12, 3, 6, 9 postions fail. I am also amonst those that purchased the Helix to be used stand alone (without the Editor). The upside is that Line 6's Technical Support is World Class and will service you ASAP! If there were alternate methods -- as a failsafe -- to access the Seven directional functions of the Joystick via other encoders on the Helix that would be ideal!

Yup! The Studio Tube Preamp can make a noticable difference. And, it can be useful several places in the Signal Path.
-
As I recollect, Line 6's Helix Project Manager mentioned that there was just such a thing visible during development. It was removed from production units due to the belief that the information would be a user distraction and not alter the result of Dynamic DSP availability in Helix's Signal Paths.

Add your needed feature request to IdeaScale to get this on Line 6's radar and begin accumulating votes! Seems that everyone here would vote it up.

A Password Lock on the Helix???? Absolutely a BAD IDEA!! Copy your precious presets to another (empty) SetList on your Helix. The copied Presets will be conveniently accessible on board, yet in a place where they are impervious to any distracted double Taps of the Save button (while you are using/editing/working in the other SetList). Unless you are saving your financial, social security, or other confidential info, in the names of your Presets, you should concentrate more on the physical security of the entire device. A Password lock concept for the Helix rates about the same as a matching set of custom keyed Tuner Locks that would prevent anyone other than the owner from turning the tuning pegs of their guitar. Come to think of it, if they also had a heavy duty metal pass through slot, you could thread your bicycle cable lock to secure you guitar to the stand. The best idea to come from this thread would be for the OP to put this on IdeaScale so the votes can rack up. Might just earn an all-time Negative Vote count. Should Line 6 ever provide any sort of a Locking or additional confirmation for overwrite feature please make it so that it could be disabled for all those who would never use it!

What was a great discovery for me, and may be of interest to other Helix Users, is that Helix has a Studio Tube PreAmp located in the PreAmp > Mic Models List! The Studio TubePre may be placed in Helix's Signal Path(s) as a Block, once, or several times, and can be just as useful for Guitars as for Mics! Try it positioned early in the Signal Path. I found that this was not apparent when looking at Helix Product features on Line 6's website nor on HelixHelp.com's Amp features listings, as neither site lists the separate category of PreAmp Models. On the Helix units, the PreAmps category is sub-divided into Guitar, Bass, and Mic.

Lol! I found dropping a Looper Block early in the Signal Path allowed me to capture what I wanted to hear, and then allowed me to step through each of the Amp Block Models, Cab Models, etc. Very easy to Drop in 2 Amps and Cabs and Bypass them to iso the differences. The Helix DSP are dedicated one each to each Signal Path! Don't be reluctant to use both of them. Splitting the Signal Path and using different Helix Cab Blocks on each split of the Path, really improves the sound! Particularly if you change up the Mics, Positions, Early Reflections and Tones of each Cab. The Factory Presets are merely examples. Use a New (empty) Preset of your own recipe! Depending on your Guitar's Pickups enabling the Global Guitar In Pad (Default is "Off") can improve results. Same applies for the Input Block's Impedence Setting (Default is "Auto").

Routing/Levels for 4CM - FX Only into Orange DD50 (Line level loop)
MusicLaw replied to JAGreenhill's topic in Helix
Yes. It certainly can be done. Each stage on the Helix has at least one trim control. Specifically, the Helix's FX Send and Returns and Main Out may be individually configured in Global Settings for Line or Level signals. Helix also provides Level control parameters in each of the actual Send and Return Blocks, as well as in the Output Block. For best results with your Amp, you'll need to try the several areas of adjustment to optimize your gain structure. Also any of the FX Blocks or other EQ, Dynamics, etc., that you may add to the Helix's Signal Path(s) also can affect your gain structure, and these blocks also have Level controls. It would be difficult to come up with a configuration where your needs could not be met by Helix's features. The only exception would be if you needed more than the Two (2) FX Loops provided in Helix LT. In that case, the Helix Floor and Helix Rack each have Four (4) Analog FX Loops. -
^^^^^^Given Helix's ample Empty SetLists (including the empty slots in the Templates Setlist), what you suggest is a perfectly sensible and practical method! I would still love to have my Favorites version of Models appear in the Model's List, or, in a subsorted Favorites version of the Models List, so I could directly select which Model (Factory Default or My Favorite) when inserting the Model Block in a Signal Path -- without having to copy and past from the Templates Setlist.
-
During Andy's presentation, he was using his Laptop for PowerPoint style graphics, and the Helix LT unit. I do not think he was using the Editor to change any of the Presets nor enable/disable Stomps, or Select Snapshots. He was using his feet for these changes while playing. He did not show the Helix Editor during the presentation.

Global Settings > Footswitches (Knob 1) allows for disabling the Touch Sensitivity feature. Once you are aware of how to use the Touch Sensitivity feature, it really speeds up how fast and easy it is to get to any parameter of any footswitch assigned Block.
-
^^^^^^This If Helix's firmware were enhanced with a "Remember" feature to keep/remember the last used settings of each parameter of a Model in the Model List, this would make life much easier for users and eliminate the need for users to manually save their own remember Model in a Template Preset! The press encoder button for each parameter, on each Page, of a Model's parameters (on the Helix itself) could be left as it currently operates such that it would return the respective value of the individual parameter to the Factory Default value for that Parameter. The Mic list's encoder knob (and I believe a few other encoder knobs) were not as of fw 2.12 restoring the Factory Default parameter value. Rather it would reset the Mic Lists to the first Mic in the List. This would have to be revised/corrected.

Yeah, it all depends on the sensitivity design of the Return Input that Helix's Send signal is hitting. Try it using both of Helix's Send Levels and see which works best for the gear receiving the signal. And, if you are routing the signal back to any of Helix's FX Returns from one of your amps, pedals, or outboard gear components, try both of Helix's FX Return Sensitivity Level settings (Line vs. Instrument) to see which works best.

I attended Line6's ToneMadePro Event at Guitar Center, Northridge last evening. Line 6's Andy Paredes did an exceptionally informative and well paced presentation. Andy tastfully demonstrated numerous well known artistic tone configurations using the Helix LT while providing clear and concise explanations. His presentation included graphics from the Line6.com/ToneTemplate PDFs. These were amongst some of the most useful gems provided during the just over an hour event. Highly recommended if you can get to one of these Events. Check the Line 6 Events section of Line6.com for dates, and locations. And, if they were to video one of these, it would be a terrific resource for all to view who may not be able to attend one of the live events.

Or, they simply could have released 2.21 for everything, and when any sort of a patch issues to *any* of the components (Editor, Firmware, Driver, Updater) simply increment to the next meaningful number. If very minimal, for example, go to 2.21.1. If more significant, go to 2.22. This has been working for many software companies for decades! Some have even gone with Julian Date Numbering.

Hi, Pop1655! You're Welcome! Without your avatar graphic, I did not, at first, notice that you're here on the Forums. Good to see you're making headway!

When feeding Stereo Analog to Helix via two of the FX Returns, a space saving alternative to defining a Stereo FX Block in Helix's Signal Path 1A is to use Signal Path 1B, (2A or 2B) and redefine Path 1B's (or 2A or 2B's) Input Block to use FX Returns 1/2 or 3/4. Here's how: Add a Stereo Gain Block to Path 1A. Select the Gain Block and Press the Action Button. Drag Gain Block Down to create Path 1B. Select Path 1A's Split Block and Press the Action Button. Drag Split Block down and parallel Path 1B's Input Block appears. Select Path 1B's Input Block and change from Multi to FX Returns 1/2 or 3/4. Select the Path 1A's Merge Block and Press the Action Button. Drag Merge Block Down to this creates Path 1B's Output Block. Save this as a Template and you may reuse it as needed. The Stereo Gain Block makes it easy to adjust the Stereo Analog incoming Audio Level via the Helix. BTW, it takes more time to read the above steps, than to actually do them on the Helix!

1/4" Stereo extension cable out of Helix's Headphone Jack works justs fine to a 1/4" stereo to 1/8" stereo male adapter. used that exact routing the first time I connected my Helix to the Yamaha THR10C's AuxIn. I prefer keeping the Helix's headphone jack dedicated for my Headphones, so I can quickly put them on to check things (imaging, tones, etc.) and still have the Yamaha connected on a set of FX Sends. Once I dial in tones on the Yamaha (near field) I can quickly isolate it or Bypass it and listen to either set of Main Monitors (JBL LSR308s or Yamaha DXRs) as I choose. To adjust the THR10's volume, I'll use its AuxIn knob, or leave that as set and use the FX Send's Level for up to +6db Boost, or add a Gain Block for up to a +12dB Boost. Either of these I can easily control right from the Helix without reaching for the THR10C.
-
The AuxIn on the THR10C bypasses the Amp Selection, DSP, Tone Stack, and FX Knobs. Only the Aux Volume Knob is active. You only need the dual L&R 1/4" Male to 1/8" Stereo adapter cable to go from Helix 1/4" Outs (Main or FX Sends) to THR10C 1/8" AuxIn. Sounds even better than the THR10C's Clean or Flat settings.
-
I have a THR10C and connect my Helix to the Yamaha via the AuxIn, using a HOSA Dual 1/4" Male L&R to Stereo 1/8" Male adapter cord. I use the Helix L&R Main Out (or FX Send 1/2 or 3/4). It works great! Connecting to the Yamaha this way, bypasses all the Yamaha's DSP, so the audio is very clean coming out of the Yamaha's Stereo Spkrs. As a result, the Yamaha's Amp Selection Knob postion, Tone Stack knobs, and FX knob settings are inactive so it doesn't matter how I last had them set for playing directly through the THR10C. The only knob on the Yamaha that matters is the AuxIn's Volume knob. I tried going in via the Main 1/4" in on the Yamaha, but did not care for the results, even when it's Amp selection was set to "Flat". YMMV

"Helix Suite" or "Helix Apps" work. Either would help distinguish from the existing ambiguity.

Helix's on board cabs (which are IRs) can sound great! And, they keep improving with each firmware released! Using a New (empty) Preset, drop in a Looper Block, an Amp Block and Two Cab (single) Blocks. Move the First Cab Block down to Path 1B and to the right so that it visually sits direct below the Cab Block on Path 1A. Select the Split Block and change it to a Y Split. The Y Split allows encoder Knob 1 to adjust the Left/Right Balance between the Cabs. The A/B Split allows encoder Knobs 1 and 2 to do so for each of the Split's Branches should you prefer to do so that way. Select different cabs for each Cab Block. Try one clean and clear to cut through, and another fuller and robust for body. Try different Mics, Distance and Early Reflections on the Cabs to enrich their character. Adjust the Blend of the Cabs using the Y Split. Use whichever Amp Model you like. You could even use two Amps. Here's a really good video to give you more ideas:
