As I understand the 4CM the Send from your HX FX goes into you amp’s Guitar In jack. I believe that should be set to Instrument level, not line. Don’t know if that will fix things but there’s currently a level mismatch at that point in the chain.

Is it an actual VDI cable that you are connecting to a Variax-supporting Line 6 device like Helix or POD HD500x/Prox? Or is it the Variax hardware interface device/cables? If the latter make sure you are powering the guitar with a fully charged battery and have a 1/4' cable connected to the Variax output jack.

Yes to both questions. The amp models can be tweaked and moved in any preset. Not sure what processing power has to do with this, though.

Can you define, in quantitative terms, what you mean by 'get it right'? What are the critical checkboxes that Line 6 should tick off before releasing an update? Which of those were not, in your opinion, ready in the latest release? You never 'have to' update. If you're happy with your current firmware version you can remain there for the rest of your device's life. As was already asked - are you having any issues now that you're back to your old way of doing things?

Thanks for letting us know more about your context and intentions. That helps us provide better commentary. 2) You certainly can use the POD Go in this manner. We just wanted to make sure you understand that there is actually a better product for this purpose - the HX FX. If this were your sole intention you would be wasting $$ buying POD Go features that you won’t use (amps, cabs). 1) If you are using this setup as a trial to help you determine if and when you should use it as your live rig one day I think you may doing yourself a disservice. Your conclusions will be based on a setup that you won’t actually be using. If you do want to use the POD Go someday instead of real amps and pedals you won’t be running it through a real amp. You will want to set it up to be used with PA speakers or studio monitors, which will deliver a very different sound than your guitar amp. It would be a shame to find yourself disappointed with the sound quality of your current setup and decide that the POD Go is not for you.

Yes, that’s correct to do what you want. All FX from the POD Go will be applied before the amp input. No splitting of FX pre/post amp. However, this is a good question.....

Did you open a support ticket to report this? Line 6 wants to hear about these things so it can investigate.

What firmware version are you running? If not the latest v3.10 I suggest you upgrade to that version first. It may fix the issue. If not at least we can help troubleshoot your issue from a known firmware base.

It’s intended for artists to enter into a working relationship with Line 6. May or may not be useful to you in this context.

Kidding aside, the official way to make this request to Line 6 is through Ideascale.

Are you using custom tunings on the Variax guitar just with Workbench and incorporating the tunings into the Variax model, or are you using custom tunings with a Line 6 device (e.g. Helix) that supports custom tuning per preset? If the former, make sure the Tuning knob on your Variax guitar is set to Model allowing the individual Variax model’s custom tuning to be active. Your symptom would be explained if the Variax tuning knob is set to 1/2 Down. If the latter, three possible reasons come to mind. There may be others. 1. The Variax setting in the Input block of your Helix presets may have been set to Global at a time when the active Variax settings forced a 1/2 step down custom tuning. Change the Variax Setting parameter to ‘Per Preset’. 2. A specific preset may have used the Custom Tuning feature to force the 1/2 step down tuning, and all subsequent presets you tested use the Don’t Force setting for the Custom Tuning parameter. Try switching to a preset that forces a standard tuning. If that resolves the issue you will have to edit all affected presets. 3. Your Variax guitar’s physical tuning knob is set to Model and the active model incorporates the 1/2 step down tuning. Change the Variax tuning knob to Standard or use Workbench HD to change the tuning to Standard and use Helix presets to control the tuning.

One other consideration. You seem prepared to abandon your current physical amp, and to drag another out of storage just so you can bypass its preamp section and use Helix amp models. That begs the question: Do you actually want to use the preamp section of any physical amplifier or do you just want to use it as a cab/speaker for the Helix device? If you just want something to connect Helix to so that you can hear the output you will get best results if you don’t use a regular guitar amp at all. Buy an FRFR (PA) speaker instead!

Yes. That will work. You want to use what’s called the 4-cable method. This will allow you to use either a Helix amp model or your physical amp’s preamp section. You can set up your preset to use one or the other and avoid using both simultaneously. Search the internet for 4CM to get much more information on how and why to use 4CM. Once you understand it and gain some experience with it you will find it very flexible and powerful.
