I almost always go 57 off axis for distortion but seem to lean towards the condensers for cleans. The IRs are the next thing an update good enhance and squeeze some more out of the mighty HD. The only thing in its price range that can do it is the GSP1101 but that is with Beta firmware.

The is a difference in the types of comps - the Tube works good at the back end and the red works good up front (I like the red based off the MXR Dyna Comp). His job is to listen to the music and turn down the volume when it gets too loud. The "Threshold" is how loud the volume has to be before a red light comes on and the Gremlin grabs the volume fader and brings it down. The "Ratio" is how much the Gremlin brings it down. The ratio is "how many decibels out:how many decibels in". So, a 1:1 ratio means that for every 1 db that comes in, the compressor lets 1 db out. A ratio of 4:1 means that for every 4 db that comes in, 1 db is let out. A ratio of 20:1 is the same, but this is considered a limiter. The "Attack" is how long it takes the Gremlin to see the red light, get off his chair, grab the slider and pull it down. Long attack times let the transient or peak of the audio through before lowering the volume. This can accent the "punch" of a sound by making the transient even bigger compared to the rest of the signal. A shorter attack time will eventually cut off the transient too-which is what a limiter would need to do. The "Release" is how long the Gremlin keeps the fader down after the audio gets quieter than the threshold, and the red light goes off. If the release is short, then the sound will pump more-meaning that the sound will get quieter on a peak and immediately louder again after the peak is over. A long release time means that some of the notes after will be lowered in volume still, even though they are below the threshold. Compressors often have a "gain" knob at the end. Keep in mind that Compression ONLY make things quieter. The gain knob is there to bring the sound back up in volume after you squished some of the peaks. Since you altered the peaks to make them quieter, the average level of the peaks is closer to the level of the quieter parts. Mountains are now hills. Turning up the gain makes the whole track louder overall. This makes the "sustain". The quiet parts that faded out are now louder and it makes the note seem like it lasts longer. That about sums up how they work. The differences in settings and types of compressors can have a big difference on the sound. For example, an Opto compressor (it literally uses a light bulb to trigger the compression) is slower than say a digital compressor to attack and release. This makes vocals sound pretty sweet. You can increase the punch of a bass or drum by using a slower attack but longer release. You can kill a transient with a high ratio, low attack setting. An Expander is basically the opposite. The controls are pretty much the same but instead of making the sound quieter, it makes the sound louder past the threshold.

Necro thread! The model packs are what "we" wanted. We asked, we received and all in all L6 delivered the goods. Clearly if you can't create the tones you want you may need to step back and evaluate either your monitoring setup or patch building technique/HD setup. Coming from a XT/X3 myself there was a noticeable change in how tones were developed. If you feel like you got ripped off a) ask for help or b) sell it and move on. Either way its all good. -B

Man - headphones are not going to sound like monitors, TBH even FRFR monitors will eq things to some extent. Plug the 300 into the monitors and then adjust/eq the patch prior to recording. Aside from general eq settings, one of the reasons the fellas are telling you to drop some bass and treble is that when you get the rest of the band in the mix you will be cranking the volume to try and be heard. Between the bass and cymbals we can't win. :)

Well if the pricing goes anything like the XT packs, getting them on sale is the time to get them. The XT packs have been around for ages and have never been in the "clearance bin" FWIW.

If you are going into Custom Tone 9/10 they wouldn't sound like the artist the patch was named after. You could try and look up the rig and then search by amp model but again finding a decent one will take some work.

I know this won't help much but I opted to nab a Flex III when it popped up as I think its the only one where you can use the midi/usb cable to use an editor for the tones. The manuals are still up so check them out and see what the Flex I has option-wise. For example there were ~ 3 versions of the Flex IIIs from a 1x12 to a 2x12 to a 1x12 which could power an additional cab. IMO the Flexies can sound pretty sweet.

I hear ya. Things are a lot different then the old days of running a tube screamer through my old Vibrachamp. Like most of the sentiments - love the options the Pods give but have to remember to come up for air and actually play. :)

The Joyo pedals are nice too. Its been a fair piece of time since I used the XT Pro but I think you can do the loop per patch. You can always check the manual. If you have a youtube vid where the sound is pop up a link. -

What I mean is that with the current model packs there are so many amps that almost every combination you want can be dialed in regardless of the name attached. What we need (IMO) is some cab/mic/speaker options. Take a google walk through Impulse Response Guitar and see how IRs really can open up some tonal potential. All in all I will always take more stuff but there are some items that need a bit more attention first (synths. IRs for ex.) -Bill

I agree and hopefully there will be just a few more things added prior to the next gen. I got a great deal on a used GSP1101 and nabbed it for its IR loading and yep IRs can really influence the tone. So "maybe" L6 will give us a few user slots (say 10) for IRs. If they go the route of D-Tech a small memory write program that allows naming and slot allocation - doesn't even have to be part of HD Edit, that would push the fine HD beast even further. Sorry for the ramble! :)
