Fractal AX8 vs. Helix STEEL CAGE MATCH! We declare a winner.
cruisinon2 replied to PeterHamm's topic in Helix
Nothing does. Ever. I've owned lt all at one point or another, and I'm still waiting for that mythical modeler that tweaks itself in the box while I'm on my way home from the store. Hasn't happened yet...and it won't, at least not in this life. -
Customtone is not "one size fits all". "Top rated" is meaningless. There are numerous variables that affect tone...you can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a thread that discusses said variables at length. One could read on this topic for months on end. Bottom line is, don't expect something to sound wonderful just because it came from Customtone...in fact, most of the time it'll be useless. Everything from the guitar and pickups used to create the patch, to the speakers/amp/ headphones he monitored through to dial it in, to the player himself, and the acoustics of the room he was sitting in...it all affects tone. What you're hearing ain't what the he heard on his end.
-
It really shouldn't matter which outputs you use... but since you already know what it sounds like through the 1/4" outs, why introduce another variable? I don't know anything about that particular interface, but they're all essentially the same as far as ins/outs are concerned.... the only thing that changes is how many there are, and I would assume that they're labeled. guitar-->POD --> Interface --> USB out to Mac, monitor out to monitors.
-
Could be a problem with the USB out... using an external interface would be a workaround, since you already know that it sounds fine through the 1/4" outs. There's nothing mysterious about the connections. L and R outs from the POD to the interface, USB out from the interface to your Mac, and connect your monitors to the monitor outs on the interface. I run Focusrite 2i4 with the POD this way... direct monitoring, no latency. Works great.

You can boost the output of the models up to 6dB in Workbench.

Sympathetic vibrations can come from anywhere...anything loose that shouldn't be. Not really something that can be diagnosed remotely. If you're not comfortable setting things up yourself, take it to someone who is. Official proclamations notwithstanding, any competent luthier will be able to set it up for you.

Just Can't Use The Guitar Modeling... :(
cruisinon2 replied to robbieb61's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Lol... building an altar to one's self will never cease to be amusing. While this one is at least 3 orders of magnitude more hideous than the JTV headstocks...those are still ugly. We get it. He's James Tyler, and he builds guitars. Having it appear once would be sufficient....you'll never hear anyone say that Strats and Teles would look better if the headstocks had "Fender" emblazoned on them 27 times. ;) -
It was all over when society decided to replace "I think" with "I feel". Emotion has become the justification for essentially everything. Politicians love it. People will sign away their own mother if they think they'll "feel" good enough about it once it's done.
-
Simple... it's human nature. We like to argue. And (in this country anyway) advertising openly encourages us all to be chronically discontented with whatever we currently own, so that we're all in a nearly constant state of buying new $hit (that we mostly don't need).

We'll that all depends on the sound(s) you're looking for. One of the primary reasons I rolled the dice on a Variax was to be able to get convincing acoustic sounds live, without having to grab an actual acoustic. A traditional guitar speaker's frequency response is far too narrow, and will never be able to faithfully reproduce acoustic tones. An FRFR rig is essential for that. -

More times than I could count, I've walked away from pieces of gear that I really wanted to like. But in the end it either blows your hair back, or it doesn't. It sucks, but at least in this case you got a perfectly functional "regular" guitar. Win a few, lose a few... 😕 -
The HOG? ;)

I won't go so far as to say that artist endorsements are completely worthless, but they're close. I couldn't care less what some famous player uses...even if it's somebody I like. It's just advertising drivel. End of story. Wouldn't matter to me if The Almighty Himself was using a particular piece of gear...if it's not the right fit for me, then I'm not spending money on it.

. Yes it is. All of it, all day long. You might decide that you prefer one unit over the other, for any one of a thousand reasons. That however, does not "prove" that one unit is inherently "better" than the other. They're both good. Excellent results can be achieved with either one. Getting a tone to sit well in a mix is a matter of knowledge, experience, and not being deaf...and it makes no difference if you're using a modeler or micing a "real" amp. Any modeler will need tweaking in that regard. Since you claim to have all of those bases covered, there's no reason you can't get tones you like with either unit. But trying to apply some objective standard that will determine a "winner" is a ridiculous waste of time. There's nothing to measure, and no "right" or "wrong". You'll either like it, or you won't. Try them both. Buy the one that suits you better.
-
Ad nauseam...in thread after thread. "Better" has no meaningful definition here, as it is ENTIRELY subjective. ANY of the current modelers can be made to sound "good". They can also be made to sound like crap...whatever those terms mean to you. It boils down to whether or not the pilot knows what he's doing. A/B comparisons are useless.
-
The only real answer is "get used to it". That's probably not terribly satisfying, but butchering the switch isn't the answer. I doubt changing the switch cap will make much of a difference, but its just about your only option.
-
Trivial perhaps, but that doesn't make it any less ugly, lol. You ain't wrong...

String end stuck in guitar.

Open the back panel and get it out... might be able to shake it out once the cover is off, or you might need to move the main board depending on where it landed. Either way, you can't leave it there as it might short something out if it's touching the wrong thing on the board. -
Kinmans f'in rock...a bit pricey, but awesome.
