Mags And Models Blended Problem
radatats posted a topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
With the great new firmware I have finally had a chance to play around with Workbench while connected to HD Edit and the JTV/POD/DT rig. Really happy with what can be done now. Finally realized what many had been saying about adjusting string volumes and it really helps to bring out string definition during play. However,I tried using the blending feature at the bottom left of Workbench and a strange problem has come up. No matter what model or mag combination I try, if I blend the mags in say to 50%, my D string sounds like it is actually a different model to the rest. For instance with Lester 1 and HB pup on my 69 - Play a scale up from the bottom E and it sounds fine on E and A, rich, warm, but as soon as I hit the D string it sounds like a Strat/single coil. G,B,E all back to the Lester/HB tone. Turn off the mags, it sounds Lester all the way up, turn off the models it sounds Lester all the way up, blend them together and D string quacks. Similar stiuation with other models and pup combinations too. it's not a big deal really, I don't plan on making use of this blending feature other than goofing off, but I would like to know if anyone else experiences anything similar. Other than that I am very happy with this latest update, I almost feel like I have a new guitar in my hands, it sounds that much better to me. The whole package has suddenly come to life. -
I agree with innovine here. I USED to think the Master volume affected the power tubes but no, they run full strength at all times and the Master just attenuates the signal feeding them. I would think of them as chained though, more than identical. The Channel volume feeds the Master volume which feeds the power tubes. Channel volume is basically for leveling between amp models and the Master is for overall volume level. General rule of thumb, max out your quietest amp model channel volume and adjust your louder amp models down to match.

So I Finally Jumped Ship, Dumped My Hd500 And The Last Of My Line 6 Gear.
radatats replied to EOengineer's topic in POD HD
It would be nice to have an HD POD Farm to perhaps reamp current performances but not a big deal for me personally. As far as jumping ship? I can't even imagine what would get me to move from the current JTV/POD HD/DT combination. Maybe another company comes up with a slightly better sounding amp sim but as far as it all working smoothly together like this, not likely... At this point I am all in with Line 6 and I have zero interest in going any other direction for my modeling or tone. However, I am always open to the final physical component - amp/speaker/cab. I have the DT25 head and a 2X12 and a Rocktron Velocity 300 with a pair of Peavey cabs and frankly, that can be a PITA to lug around. I am still open to another FRFR rig combination and will consider other than Line 6 but really just because of the price point. If dollars weren't a consideration I would stay in brand without question. Guess I just qualified as a "fan boy"... lol... -
I know its not top of the line but the Line 6 EX 1 at 50 bucks does the job without any bother... Sure seems sturdy enough to me and works well in all functions...

Locking Tuners And Breakage
radatats replied to bowermang's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Locking tuners DO NOT get any extra winds around the post. As you said, pull straight through and tighten down, then tune. 3-4 times a year is very reasonable by the way... Unless you beat your strings to death, they should be OK if you restring correctly... -
I too have the DT25 head but with a 2X12 I built... 1 Celestion V-30 and 1 Eminence Governor... sounds positively sick... especially with my JTV since the new firmware... Just a tad heavier than I wish for lugging around... Unless you are definitely going for a matching Line 6 cab, consider a different speaker voicing for the second cab... can really round things out for ya...
-
Like I said though, I don't have L series so it may sound just fine with them connected with L6 link too... maybe they self configure to work well...
-
Absolutely... I keep my POD set to Studio Direct and it is connected to both my stereo rig by 1/4 outs and my DT by L6 link... the moment I turn on the DT the POD automatically switches to Stack Power and I can't switch it back... as soon as I turn off the DT it switches right back to Studo Direct...
-
I think you have it right but be aware, as soon as you are connected with L6 link to the DT, the POD will automatically switch to Combo Power or Studio Power and cannot be changed... it may affect the tone going to the Lseries... I don't have the L series but did try to do the same thing with my regular stereo power amp and speakers and I could not get a tone I liked from my system. Sean did however, so I would say you need to just be aware of this as a potential issue...
-
Absolutely... make sure you set the inputs correctly. Set up a dual amp path and put NOTHING in the pre or post section... use path A for the DT and B for the vocals... keep the two paths separate with the mixer as the very last block panned hard left and right... you can either leave the mic path amp block with nothing or try the vintage pre for your vocals...

Variax 300 Sounds Much Better
radatats replied to davec69's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
I'm wondering if it isn't more likely that the simple act of taking it apart and reconnecting everything didn't just clean and reseat all the various contacts and connectors... not that it matters in the end as it sounds better and that is what matters now... could be that it somehow reset it's models to a default set list... I think your idea of reloading those models and/or rebuilding ones you like is a good one... -
good luck!

Unfortunately just us fellow users unless there is an opportunity to encourage us to buy more gear... the only place I consistently see any official company presence is in the stage source forums...

hahaha!!! always a tradeoff... do I make it sound best for the audience or for me?

Multiple Dt50's Plus L2t
radatats replied to u182155's topic in Dream Rig - Line 6 Product Integration
Absolutely true... I posted the same thing ages ago and it is like gospel for me. These things all communicate and you have to establish the comm link in order to get it all working together in unison. Same with the computer connection and HD Edit and Workbench. I do it the same way, every time and it has never failed me so far... (hope I didn't just jinx the whole damn thing) :D it DOES matter the order you turn your amps on. I did not think this would be the case.... and was surprised when things were not working correctly for me..... shut down the amps.... and turned them back on in order.... problem solved. -
Pg 35 of the Advaced guide. You can assign up to 50 separate parameters to the expression pedal simultaneously. It is one of the most overlooked features but allows amazing creative possibilities. I prefer to do it on the computer in HD Edit on the Controllers tab. Just pick the model you want, assign a FS for ON/OFF, choose the Parameter you want the pedal to control and which Pedal you want to use. For OD/Distortion use "Output", zero-whatever and for delays, reverbs, chorus etc, use "Mix", zero-whatever. Save the patch to the computer first, then "Send" it to the POD and save it on the POD too. Don't press any of the POD FS while you are editing with HD Edit until you have done this or the patch will get messed up.

All the manuals are available for free to download and read prior to any purchase... I certainly read them and had a pretty good idea of what I was buying before hand. It is usually incumbent upon the buyer to know what it is he is spending his money on first... even before going out and getting the cheapest interface you can find to save a few hard earned bucks... what brand is the one you bought? have you tried updating the drivers? tried other USB ports? made sure nothing else is plugged into the M9 and absolutely no other USB devices operating on your laptop? Trying to be helpful but its tough on a problem like this... Edit - over here the MIDISport Uno is $40 everywhere... just saying... and the main reason for providing MIDI is for operating in conjunction with other controllers and pedals, not for potential firmware updates so no, I don't think they should have provided one and jacked up the cost. Many of us already had a MIDI solution and didn't need an extra one...

While the other solution of assigning everything to the same FS could certainly work, it has serious limitations in it being an all or nothing solution. I would suggest keeping your effects assigned to separate FS but assigning the mix for all of them to the same expression pedal. That way you have your effects "ON" with the pedal toe down for example and "OFF" with it heel down. You can then turn individual effects on and off during play as necessary... mix and match any way you like... Just another way to skin the cat...

Great write up. I think you got it right. It is just as you described and you are the player it was built for. This is a prefect amp for the guy or gal at college or in an apartment that needs a quality practice amp that the can take out if needed. The price is not cheap but not over the top. You get a lot of bang for the buck here and the fact that it can double as your regular stereo is just bonus. It was never intended to replace the POD/DT/L series so those comparisons are not helpful. Glad you were able to give it a second go and shared your thoughts...

A Chart For Noobs Or Frustrated Dream Riggers
radatats replied to oehman's topic in Dream Rig - Line 6 Product Integration
Criticism?? How about a hearty round of applause! Well done, I love it when people share their discoveies in a usable format... May not work for everyone but strong work my friend... -
Put an FX Loop in your signal chain and connect your OD/Distortion boxes to the POD send/return. That way you can control where they are in the signal chain and turn them on and off with just the FX Loop FS or keep them out of the signal path if you don't need them. You may want a compressor or wah or something else before them so don't run them between the guitar and POD... IMHO... Edit - that was for a regular setup sorry... with 4CM you already have a FX Loop so put them between the POD send and the amp guitar in... Unfortunately there is no real good way to set this up so you can also have them available using the POD's internal amp models with the 4CM... By the way... what's the verdict on the Joyo pedal? Is it a worthy addition?
