He's saying that if they went with the Tiger-SHARC processor (which is what the Axe-FX uses, btw) the cost would be significantly higher than the $500 price point. And that's the kind of processing power they'd need if they were to create a unit that could maxed out dual signal paths and have it be impossible to hit the DSP limit. As far as adding a second SHARC processor, I'd say that there are probably significant tooling and programming costs that go into adding a second processor. I'm sure it much more complicated than simply soldering a second chip to the board.

Uh, what do mean by the term "proprietary addition"?

JTV59 + HD500X Connection Problem?
phil_m replied to robertallen's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
If swapping cables solved the problem, it certainly seems like the cable you were originally using was bad. The symptoms you describe certainly fit within what I'd expect from a bad cable. It happens. -
The drive knob on the amp models generally controls how clean or dirty it is. I think even with the drive at a minimum, the Treadplate model would not be very clean. When Line 6 creates an amp model, they are only modeling one channel of whatever amp it is. There are a few amps where they model multiple channels, but the Treadplate isn't one of them. They definitely modeled the dirty channel on that amp. If you want a clean tone, you'll want to use an amp model associated with those sorts of tones - the Fenders work well, or there are others with "Clean" in their name.

Spider Valve MKII 212 having volume dip issues. Help!
phil_m replied to CrucibleOfSouls's topic in Spider Valve
I does sound like a bad tube to me. Are the tubes all glowing the same color? You say you've had it for a couple of months - did you buy it new? If so, there's a 90 day warranty on the tubes. If you bought it used, then you'll be on the hook for replacing them. Either way, you're going to need to take it to a service center. -
Noisy Echo Park
phil_m replied to Monter's topic in DL4 MkII / DL4 / MM4 / DM4 / FM4 / AM4 / ToneCore
One other option that I forgot about until just now is to pick up one of these little DC isolator things. http://www.jrrshop.com/diagops09 You could put it between the output of the DC Brick and the Echo Park, and it should prevent that noise you're hearing. -
One thing that may make your life a little easier - if you're using a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can use that to turn the knobs up and down when you have the cursor hovering over the knob. I find it's more precise than dragging the mouse back and forth.

Noisy Echo Park
phil_m replied to Monter's topic in DL4 MkII / DL4 / MM4 / DM4 / FM4 / AM4 / ToneCore
The DC Brick is causing the problem. The ToneCore pedals are notorious for being noisy on daisy chain power supplies, and even though the DC Brick isn't a literal daisy chain like, say, the Visual Sound One Spot, it still is for all intents and purposes a daisy chain. What I mean by that is that its output aren't electrically isolated from one another. They are just wired in parallel with each other. If you have an actual isolated power supply, like the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus, than each output is isolated. It's like having a bunch of standalone power supplies. There's no crosstalk between the outputs. -
It is stereo. When you say it only plays in mono, do you mean you're only hearing music from one side of the headphones, or are you hearing the same thing from both sides?

If Using Direct Out in a Dream Rig, Do I Really Need the DT25???
phil_m replied to kawititnow's topic in DT50 / DT25
If you wanted to run the DT25 in full power mode without a cab attached, you'd need an attenuator, yes, and then you could take an output from that to the mixer. Honestly, though, it seems somewhat silly to go down this route when you have very good power amp and cab modeling at your feet with the HD500X. My bet is that you would not be completely happy with output you get from the attenuator. It's not going to sound like the XLR out in full volume mode.- 7 replies

Pretty much this. What I like to do is use a bank for an amp model and set up the presets in that bank parallel to other banks. So the A preset in each bank may be my clean w/ delay. B will be crunch. C will be lead, and D may be a wild card. But that way it gives me the flexibility to use different amp models, but it also makes me familiar with what I'm doing in any given bank. I also try to keep the same types of effects assigned to the same footswitches. Pretty much what I explained above. I manage presets completely separately from the songs I'm playing. Mostly this has to do with the fact that I play with different people and groups, so the number of songs that I might need to know could well be between 30 and 50. Kind of keep setlists parallel as far how presets are arranged in them. But I mainly use them to keep presets I use when going direct separate from those I use with my DT25.

If Using Direct Out in a Dream Rig, Do I Really Need the DT25???
phil_m replied to kawititnow's topic in DT50 / DT25
If you're leaving the amp in standby mode, then, yes, the direct is only active when you're in low volume mode. This is because when you're in full volume mode, the direct out is tapped from the output transformer going to the speaker. So in full volume mode with standby on, there's no signal going to the output transformer. If you're in full volume mode with standby off, the XLR out does benefit from the tube power amp interaction with the speakers. Personally, though, I'd say that the difference this makes compared to what's coming out in LVM is not all that great. It seems to me that in your particular case using the DT25 isn't benefiting you at all. If you can't run it and have it somewhat loud, or in your case, on at all, really, you might as well just go direct from the HD500X. The DT amps were meant to be used like you'd use a real tube amp in the sense that they liked to be cranked up.- 7 replies

So are you wanting to get involved in a band? I guess you'll need to give a few more details as what you see yourself doing in the future before people can give you useful recommendations.
-
An 8 ohm cab in parallel with a 16 ohm cab would be an equivalent impedance of 5.3 ohms (the equation for figuring out the equivalent impedance of loads in parallel is 1/Z1 + 1/Z2 + .... 1/Zn = 1/ZTotal, n=number of loads). So you'd actually want to use the 4 ohm jacks. The rating represents the minimum impedance you should drive from the output. One thing with driving an imbalanced speaker load like this is that the the 8 ohm speaker will be receiving 4 times the power as the 16 ohm speaker. That doesn't necessarily mean it will be louder as other things affect that as well. But it could be.

You may want to try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. The app is working for others with iPad Airs now, so it seems like this is probably an issue specific to your installation. Version 1.10 is working fine on my 5S.

I believe he's saying that it would not be a simple thing to allow third party IR files to be loaded onto the HD in a way where the IR file could just be dropped into the cab block in the tone. If you want to use a third party IR through a software plugin or other piece of hardware, you certainly can.
-
I don't know how much you could load if 50% were eaten up from the get-go. One thing I can see, though, is that if Line 6 added this capability and people went through their existing tones trying to replace the cabs with an IR and were constantly hitting the DSP limit, that there would be a lot of frustration. I can see them wanting to avoid that scenario.
-
I don't know that the internal cabs are using the same type of technology as an IR file. I would be surprised if it could be a simple one for one replacement where the external IR file consumes the same amount of DSP as the internal one. From what I understand, loading external IRs is relatively processor intensive. I think that what Digital Igloo is saying is that right now, it's a combination of both. If adding IR capability would mean that 50% of the available would need to go to the IR block, it wouldn't be a very useful tool to people. Perhaps they could truncate it, but if truncating is seen as a compromise by people who want it, it might end up not even pleasing people. I think there's some logic in not providing a feature that can't be used unless it's really compromised. I think if it were simply a matter of adding a block with the capability and allowing an easy swap, Line 6 would have done it by now. But from what I'm reading, it isn't that easy.
-
Well, it's a different plunger mechanism from what I understand, and it is being marketed as being more robust. As to what that means, I can't say exactly. I can't say I've seen anyone complaining about the switches on a HD500X failing, but I do see people having issues with the HD500 switches every now and then. But, of course, the HD500 is an older product with a broader user base at this point, too.

Acoustic Models. . .
phil_m replied to tomtheguitarguy's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The main difference I hear in those videos is that in the PRS tone, even though it's pretty good, it still has the underlying piezo quack. If you compared it to miced acoustic, it really would not sound all that similar. It sounds like an acoustic with an under-saddle pickup. The Variax acoustics are modeling a miced acoustic, so I think that's a big reason why some people have issues with them. They sound very different than a tradition acoustic guitar with a pickup, for the most part. And, really, playing live, sometime having a little bit of piezo quack does help in cutting through. It's kind of what we've gotten used to hearing from the PA. -
Acoustic Models. . .
phil_m replied to tomtheguitarguy's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I've actually never played a Fishman equipped electric that sounded good. I use to have the Nashville Power Tele, and the sound from the piezos was useless. Even with a lot of post processing, I couldn't get anything that sounded like a decent acoustic from it. -
The PP2+ doesn't have anywhere near enough available current at the outputs to power the HD500. You could conceivably use the "courtesy output", but that would be the wrong voltage for the US adapter. So, yeah, you'll need to either get the AUS power supply (well, really, you just need the correct insert for the power supply) or a transformer.
-
Well, none of the sounds should have changed. I would recommend against rolling back simply because there was a bug in the previous version that could have some potentially serious consequences in the way of loud, uncontrollable sound being played back through headphones and/or speakers. Did you do the Global Settings Reset after doing the update? If not, you should. http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/pod/pod-hd/after-pod-hd500x500-flashre-flashupdate-man-r160 Also, double check to make sure you are in the correct output mode.
