Tips On Getting Acoustic Sounds
phil_m replied to phil_m's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
This is one of Sean's acoustic patches: http://line6.com/customtone/tone/219017/ It appears to essentially the same as in the video, except this one has the volume pedal and noise gate added. -
Just in case people didn't see this link in the other thread, I thought I'd start a new topic since this is brought up a lot here. The biggest point Sean makes is that playing the Variax acoustics and having them sound good requires a light touch - a very light touch, really. I think this is where many of the complaints come from. You can't necessarily treat the Variax like an acoustic guitar and strum the crap out of it like you would a real acoustic guitar and expect it to sound good. Anyway, here's the link again. http://blog.line6.com/2013/2061/

Yes, there is a noise gate that can be found in the setup menu and saved on a preset per preset basis, and there is also a noise gate effect that can be used as a standalone effect in a preset.

It can't be done with the M9. You can do it with the M13, however.

The EHX pedal won't work with Line 6 devices. Line 6 uses a different sort of configuration for their expression pedals - that's why you only need a TS cable to connect the EX-1 to the HD500. In pedals that use TRS cables to connect to expression pedals, the value of the potentiometer isn't important. For Line 6 products it's critical. I know the EHX pedal isn't using an actual pot, but it still work by varying the impedance between the tip and ring channels of the cable.

Flextone Iii Xl Volume Issues
phil_m replied to torrevieja's topic in Flextone I / II / III / Duoverb / HD147
Well, the levels of the amp models are all different, so when you select different models, the output volume will change. Also, the volume between different presets is likely to be different as well. -
Attention Shoppers! Jtv-59 $998!
phil_m replied to johnnyayyy's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I saw this, too. It's a good deal. I've bought a few things from Hello Music, and they're OK. They're kind of like a clearinghouse of sorts. The one thing that would give me a slight pause in regards to buying a Variax from them is that they aren't an authorized Line 6 dealer. They aren't an authorized dealer for any manufacturer, actually. That's why they can get away with advertising thing for below MAP. So what that means is that this invalidates the warranty for anything they sell. Now, supposedly, they will honor any manufacturer's warranty for anything they sell. I suppose that means if you need service, you'd have to send the product back to them, and they would get it repaired in some way. I just don't know if I'd be too excited about that prospect when it comes to something like the JTV. I'd be much more comfortable dealing with a place like Sweetwater for a little more money. That's just my opinion. I'm not meaning to be a party-pooper... -
The Edge has two custom Variax acoustics - this one and a silver sparkle one.

+1 to the post above... Move the pedal to the post position, and it won't affect the saturation of your tone.

There are a few things at play here. You can have the HD500X's tap tempo set to preset or global. If you set it to global, when you tap a tempo in, it affects all presets. If you set it per preset, it only changes the BPM on that preset. That sounds like what you'd want to do. You can also manually enter a BPM in each preset and save each preset with whatever tempo you want it at. If you tap in a new tempo, that gets temporarily overridden (assuming, again you have the tap tempo parameter set to preset). The BPM setting in each preset will affect any effect that has a note value used as a setting. So that could be virtually any time-based effect. If you want to save delay with a specific millisecond value in a preset, you can do that as well. However, if you do that, that won't be affected by the tap tempo. The long and short of it is that, yes, you should be able to do what you want to do.

If you're not using an external expression pedal, it can be a little tricky to actually disable the volume pedal. Under the setup menu for the expression pedals, you have three choices: 1-W/off 2-Vol – Pedal 1 controls Wah with the toe switch controlling Wah on/off. Pedal 2, if present, controls Volume. 1-Twk 2-Vol – Pedal 1 controls whatever is assigned to Tweak in the lower half of the LCD display. Pedal 2, if present, controls Volume. 1-Wah/Vol 2-Tweak – Pedal 1 controls Wah and Volume with the toe switch toggling between the two. Pedal 2, if present, controls whatever is assigned to Tweak. If you choose the second option, it disables the onboard pedal as a volume pedal, but you also lose the wah functionality for the onboard pedal. The other thing you could do is go into the volume pedal block in the tone and change the min and the max to both be 100%. That would functionally disable the pedal. Btw, I don't understand what you mean when you say "I don't have full precense"... Are you saying you think the volume pedal effect is changing your tone in some way?

Latest Firmware Is Very Harsh (high Gain Tones) Pod Hd500
phil_m replied to juaquito16's topic in POD HD
There shouldn't be any difference in the overall sound between those two versions. A few new amp models were added in 2.10, and they added support for the StageSource speakers, but other than that nothing changed. If you're hearing differences, it's probably because some setting is changed on your HD500. -
Is Promotions@go.line6.com A Spam Mail?
phil_m replied to Alsklaftsk123's topic in Computer Audio Setup and Troubleshooting
That's a legit address... They send out occasional announcements and such with that address. Essentially, I think that's the address they use for their email list. -
You guessed correctly... If you choose the pre model of one of those specific amps, yes, you should be able to match what you're hearing from the DT-25 when using it standalone. One thing to remember is that the DT-25 standalone does use cab models. Also, because of the complexity of the HD500's signal path, there are multiple things that could effect your gain staging going into the amp model. So it's not necessarily automatic that you'll get them to match exactly. But they are the same preamp models.

This is just kind of the nature of an outdoor gig... I don't know if any manufacturer is immune to it. If you're depending on LED indicators or LCD displays, they're going to get washed out in direct sunlight. Light levels in direct sunlight are literally thousands of times brighter than in a dim club. The best advice I could give is if you're doing an outdoor gig, try to make it so the pedal isn't in direct sunlight.

If a product gets to the point where it's more expensive to make and support than otherwise, what choice does a company have but to discontinue it? I don't think the Vetta ever sold great, but it seems to have done OK for a while. I do think that for the average guitarist it was more than they wanted both in terms of price and complexity. I imagine in some ways the Vetta was actually probably subsidized by sales of lower priced items throughout the years. I'm not saying it wasn't a great product. I just don't think it had enough interest to sustain it. I think that's why there hasn't been another product to fully take its place. The one thing that is nice about the Dream Rig concept is that a person doesn't have to buy everything all at once. They can get their feet wet with buying one of the POD HDs for not too much money, and then if they decide they want more, they can buy a DT-25 or DT-50.

Why in the world would any modeling product need monthly updates? That's just absurd, if you ask me. Cliff may be able to do that for the Axe FX, but it still seems like it would be more of a nuisance than anything. What on earth is he constantly changing? It's like the George Lucas method of creating... Step away from the computer, man... Step away...

I don't think anyone is entitled to anything as far as companies providing certain products... Companies are going to do what they think is their best interest to move forward. Having happy customers is certainly generally within a company's interest, but trying to fulfill their every whim is a losing proposition.

If you're not using alternate tunings on the acoustics, one thing you could try is blending in a little bit of the signal from the magnetic pickups in Workbench. That could give you a bit more of the midrange thump you're looking for in a live acoustic sound. It's kind of ironic, really. What most acoustic DI systems are trying to give you is the sound of a miced acoustic, but in reality, that sound doesn't quite cut it live for most pop and rock applications. You need a bit of the piezo quack to cut through.

Who Has A Completely Working Jtv Guitar?

I've had mine since August 2012, and I'd says it's worked perfectly ever since. Mine is a JTV69US. -
Case For Jtv 69?
phil_m replied to Charlie_Watt's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
What Strat case do you have? The old molded cases that Fender used to use for the American Standards and Deluxes won't fit the 69, but the newer ones will fit the 69: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/fender-abs-strat-tele-electric-guitar-case The G&G case will fit, too, of course. But I have tried my 69 in the newer ATA case Fender uses and it fits. It's a little snug around the body, but I'm sure after a while, the foam would loosen up.
