Yes - the HD500 FX Loop can be used as a single loop out from itself and back in. Doesn't require the 4-cable method, and doesn't require another device except for FX box(es) in the loop.
-
It sounds like you have the Pod HD500. If so, you may want to use its FX Loop. I would try the noise gate (and perhaps the wah) between the guitar and the HD Input, then run the EQ (and perhaps the wah) positioned wherever you like in the HD500 signal chain using the FX Loop.

Is there any community member here who speaks Edgar's language and can explain things to him in his own language? That would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

It's not a documented 'official' strategy, but I think most people (myself included) do this: Begin with your clean patches. When they are all 'leveled', move on to the dirty/crunchy ones, then finish with the hi-gain and/or solo patches. Only use the HD Pro device Master volume at the beginning, to set your first clean patch to the desired volume level of all your patches. Let's call this your 'target' level. After that, don't touch this setting; it does nothing for patch leveling because it affects all patches identically. Then, for each patch, the idea is to level the relative volume of this patch to match your 'target' level while changing the tone as little as possible. Your tools for doing this are the amp channel volume (not amp Master volume) and the Mixer. These adjust the volume only without changing tonality. Avoid using the Drive knob or the Amp Master volume; these settings really affect tonality. If the Channel Volume and Mixer settings are insufficient, try playing with some clean-ish FX such as Vintage Preamp or the Tube Compressor that, with some settings you will learn through experience, can greatly affect volume with minimal tonal changes. Of course, you can also add a Vol FX to change the level using your pedal rather than the Channel Volume or Mixer. You can save the patch with the desired VOL level, and set the min/max values to taste. Once you have the volume level you think matches other patches, test them together by switching patches one at a time to detect those that still need some leveling. Do this within and across the patch groupings (clean, dirty/crunchy, higain/solo). It's a time-consuming process but it does work.

I think the setup you describe is exactly right. That's what I use with L6 LINK connecting my Pod HD Pro to 2 L3t speakers. I find the best arrangement is to set the L3t volume at the 'notch' which I believe is the 50% mark and control the overall volume with the Master Volume on the HD Pro (not the Amp Master volume). Then it's just a matter of the usual patch volume leveling on the HD Pro. One thing to watch is the Mode setting on the L3t. I get the best results using Studio output on the HD Pro. With that setup you want to have the L3t in Reference mode. However, by default the HD Pro will reset the L3t mode to Electric Guitar with every patch change. What you need to do (a one time exercise) is re-save your HD Pro patches with the L3t in Reference mode. As you proceed doing this you may have to manually set the L3t to Reference mode after each patch change, then immediately save the patch on the HD Pro. Subsequently, every time you recall a patch the HD Pro will set the L3t to the saved setting of Reference mode.

Perhaps you have Tone 2 locked? That can cause the same patch to appear as Tone 2 in all presets. To check this, go to the main signal flow display. There's a little padlock icon in the bottom row of the display. Turn the little knob beneath it until the icon is in the unlocked position.

This behaviour is normal when the HD device is connected and HD Edit is running. The two devices (HD and computer) need to keep their respective RAM synchronized, and this causes the delay. The delay should disappear when you disconnect the HD device, but of course then you can't run HD Edit..

You need to re-save the HD500x patch after manually setting the L3t set to Reference mode. Thereafter, recalling the patch will reset the mode to Reference rather than Electric Guitar. It's a strange setup. The L3t mode setting is saved in the HD patch, but you can't set it in the patch either directly on the HD device or in HD Edit. It is only changed by saving the patch with the L3t in a different mode setting. By default, the L3t is set to Electric Guitar mode in every HD patch. In other words, every HD patch will set the L3t mode to Electric Guitar until you save that patch with the L3t in a different mode.

Line 6 Customer Service...or Lack Of
silverhead replied to VinnyJ's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
I am not defending Line 6. I am pointing out that you are here, knowing that it is a community forum and not a Line 6 support area, and you are not interested in receiving any support from the community. Your sole purpose in making this post is to complain about Line 6 customer service. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm just pointing out that you can join others in doing so without creating your own thread with the pretense of asking for help you know you won't get here. You are entitled to complain about the lack of service you received. Just be more direct about it, and don't pretend you want or expect to receive help here, as you did in your initial post. The only reason I responded was that you asked for help. I expected that you were being honest, and actually wanted help from the community. You don't. You just want to complain. Nowhere did I defend Line 6. I'm talking about your behaviour, not theirs. Feel free to complain. Just don't mislead others into thinking you want help when you don't. And in particular, don't take your frustration out on the first person who responded to your request for help. What you've done is called baiting. You make a post and set a trap by inviting a response, with the full intention of blasting the good-faith responder. -
There's no quality difference, just the level difference mentioned above. But that doesn't mean you will hear the same tone because headphones have different tone-colouring characteristics than what ever you are connecting the 1/4" outputs to. The tones/sound your ears hear will be quite different, and that's got nothing to do with the signal output quality.

Line 6 Customer Service...or Lack Of
silverhead replied to VinnyJ's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Yes - I noticed that in your first post. Which told me that you knew very well that you would not get Line 6 support here. Hence there were, I thought, two potential reasons for your post: 1) you actually were seeking community support, or 2) you just wanted to vent. Your first response clarified that it was actually #2. I just hoped you felt better. Apparently not. You can continue venting in good company here: http://line6.com/support/topic/5449-say-something-line-6/ There's usually at least one of these threads at any given time. No need to start your own. -

OK - well, this is a community forum so .... no, you won't get official Line 6 support here. But hopefully you feel better now having vented a bit. -

Jtv-59 Brand New Action
silverhead replied to warcloudwells's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I found the jumbo frets on the JTV-59 too high for my taste. It appeared the action was very high, but in fact the distance from string to fret was not unusual. It was the added height of the frets that made the strings so high off the fretboard. I couldn't get used to the very light touch required to avoid pressing so hard on the strings that the notes would actually be sharp by the time the string hit the fretboard. My solution was to replace the jumbo frets with normal frets. Lower action (to the fretboard) and no sharp notes. -
Yes, firmware updates often affect the tones/sounds. It's usually minor but some tweaking is often required to adjust the sound. There's a notice about this possibility during the firmware installation process. You have the option to cancel the update if you don't want any changes, and you can always roll back to previous firmware afterwards.

What Is The Difference Between "f-acoustic-1" And "acoustic-1"?
silverhead replied to ColonelForbin's topic in POD HD
The "F-xxxx" models select the factory installed presets in the Variax. The non-F models select the User models in the Variax - the models available using the pickup selector switch. These User models, all 12 banks of them from Custom 1 through the 10 labeled banks and including Custom 2, can all be used to replace the F models with user-created models using Workbench. The R-Billy model bank is one of the 10 labeled banks. Hence selecting F-R-Billy1 will select the original factory installed R-Billy model in position 1. Selecting R-Billy1 (without the F) will select the currently installed User model in the R-Billy bank, position 1. I know the F-model selections are available in the pre-JTV Variax guitars. I have heard conflicting reports about whether they are selectable in the JTV models. Apparently, some see the F-models listed when the JTV is selected as the Variax guitar, and some don't. Personally, I have seen them listed in HD500 Edit when using my JTV-59, but I haven't replaced the factory models with User models so I can't tell whether a selection difference is actually happening. -
Migrating To A Stagescape Setup

Nope. If you never use the mixer on the 't' models there's no advantage over the 'm' models. -
How To Reset Variax 500 With Pod Xt
silverhead replied to adolfocr's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
I should have asked earlier - do you have the Pod xt or the Pod xt Live? Only the xt Live has the VDI (Variax Digital Input) connection. You can't digitally connect the Variax to the bean-shaped Pod xt, so if that's what you have you will have to use the Workbench hardware interface to reset the Variax. -

How To Reset Variax 500 With Pod Xt
silverhead replied to adolfocr's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Resetting the Variax requires reinstalling the firmware. In order to do that, Monkey needs to recognize the Variax connection to your computer. There are two ways to connect your Variax to your computer so that Monkey can see it: - use the Workbench hardware interface. Monkey sees the Variax directly - use your Pod xt. Monkey sees the Variax connected through the xt. So the answer is yes and no. Yes, as long as your pod xt is also connected to your computer. No if it is not. -
The tuner only works with Input 1. Make sure the instrument you're tuning is selected for Input 1.

At the time I said that, it was true. I almost never change patches while playing; I always change between songs. However, having read more about the popping happening changing patches while playing I tested this on my equipment. I clearly hear it anytime I change patches while the guitar is sounding. I don't hear it if the guitar is silent. I can certainly see why it is annoying to those whose patch setup requires mid-song patch switching. Definitely deserves to be fixed.

Latency When Playing Through Home Theater (pod Hd Pro X)
silverhead replied to MarcintheCloud's topic in POD HD
Hmmm..... the latency may be due to a delay setting of some sort in the home theater setup. I know in my home theater A/V system I can set an audio delay to synchronize the audio with the video coming from my TV, so that the lip movements of the speaker match the voice. Check your audio settings to see if you have a delay.
