    You can use the onboard looper as well to record a riff and tweak your tone in realtime. Should be much easier but you have to put the looper in pre position IMHO.

    I do like the onboard cabs as they seem to offer enough options for me. I am reducing my patches to a minimum at the moment. My goal is to get a max of two basic tones per gain-type (High gain, Crunch). What I found very enlightening / a good playground was locating my favorit tones (tones I allways come back to) and trying to match them just by using another nearby cab/mic combination. So I listen to similar sounding stock cabs (you will find 1-5 in most cases) duplicate my favorite tone and try to get even closer to the source by choosing a fitting mic to that cab. Of course there is no way to get 100 % to my original favorite tone ... but sometimes you get further than your old favorite! This way the onboard-cabs offer me the possibility to find something "subtile" in the depth of the tone I would not have searched for nor found by tweaking the amp or EQs. Not easy to explain in my poor English but I do hope someone tried that himself before feeling sick about the cabs and mics. There are nice pairings you can find if you try to mimic a good tone in a different way.

    AFAIK the COSM technology is not a static technology and was improved from generation to generation. It was introduced way back in 1995 so if you compared a VG8 to the POD HD I am pretty sure the POD was much better ;)

    If you start with the POD HD Edit please keep in mind that there are some bugs and glitches. You will find some of them reported here http://line6.com/support/topic/19937-hd-edit-226-collection-of-known-issues/ The best way is to learn how to use the send & receive options and how to identify the glitches. And please backup your setlist often and with clear timestamps in your local folder structure! I do my backups into a cloud-service to have them accessible at rehearsal and gigs too.

    ... but the amp sims will not sound as good as they could through an amp. That's why most of us took the step and play direct to PA with a good monitoring our own active FRFR speakers.

    Exact the same behavior here. Don't hold you breath depending on Line6 to publish any bug fixes.They are still producing and selling, but unfortunately I am sure, they don't invest anymore time in the HD.

    I am a little bit unsure if we are talking about the same issue but I get a receive-patches timeout every time I start HD Edit.Using the "Receive all" function works but I do not understand the reason why it has to be tickled this way.

    .. and put input 1 to Guitar and input 2 to an unused device on the POD (like Variax or Aux in each patch (or global)).

    No complaints with the GT-6 being used as a MIDI-Controller to switch amp-channels on a ENGL with the Z-7 MIDI-Interface attached. Furthermore we use the Noise Suppressor on the ENGL HighGain-Channel and some usual Effects like delay and Wah. Still getting used to functions but everything turns out to be fine. Effects and modeling are better than expected as the device was released in 2001. It is really fun to operate a device from "decades ago" ;)

    Glad it works for you. 2. is what I observed too. Variax acoustics don't really likes plek-strumming.

    I play a Mustang III sometimes just because someone lends me one and didn't recall it. The amp itself sounds lame to me overall (cabinet or speaker?) and I would only use it as a on stage monitor or home practice but it gets better if connected to a FOH System or good active FRFR monitor. It is a nice product to get quick and useable tones out of the box, but the POD has much more to offer. If you really want to use the POD go and get a FRFR monitor, ask your Boss for two weeks of holidays and read this guide http://foobazaar.com/podhd/toneGuide/

    Honestly I don't like the typical high-gain tone of ENGL, but I do love the crunch.However… my friend was relying on the following informations I send to him. We are both pretty sure the FCB1010 is sending PCs via the pedals.

    Strumming with my fingers instead of a plek offers the best tone in my opinion.

    Update: No needs for further investigations. My friend bought a old and cheap Boss GT-6 which should fit his simple needs for Noisegate, Tuner and a little bit of room and delay. The GT-6 sends PC commands right as the formally used Behringer FCB1010 does, so everything should work fine. Thank you very much!

    Good new. I talked to my bandmate and he could describe the way the Amp channel switches are stored in the ENGL Z7 Midi interface. He pushes the edit-button, does a click on the Midi-foot switch and adjusts the amp Chanel settings, so after storing this all relationships are sampled in the Midi-Interface. To me it seems like the Z7 is "learning" the incoming Midi program changes. So it should be possible, to simulate the part of clicking on the Midi-foot switch, by switching up or down into the POD Xt / X3 Preset, which should finally be used in this scenario. Re-pushing the footswitch of the Preset might work either. Does that sound valid somehow?

    M13 could be an alternative. It seems to offer 48 individual MIDI-Sends (one per scene). I will take a look at the M5 and M9, too. Interesting...     No re-writes. Now I have to find out if the ENGL MIDI-Interface receives the 4 channel programm-changes on 0-3 or 1-4

    What is a friend? A follower?! At the moment the HD500 seems to be the better value but I am going to investigate in the routing possibilities of the Engl MIDI-Interface called Z-7. Maybe this unite can re-write in logical patterns like (Midi / Ampchanel) 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-1, 6-2, 7-3, 8-4, or something freely adjustable like 1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 4-3, 5-4 I will get back to you after reading those lollipop manual :ph34r:
