This release of Gearbox Standalone adds support for Windows 7 and Mac OSX 10.6. GearBox Plug-In Support does not apply, please see the following knowledge base article for more details: Gearbox Plug-in Effect: Discontinued New features/changes/fixes in this release: The currently released drivers and Line 6 Monkey with Windows 7 and Snow Leopard support are bundled with this GearBox package. A minor bug which could cause the tonedirect volume to be set to 0 with some patches was fixed. You can download the latest Gearbox release at: http://line6.com/software/ System Requirements: WINDOWS® Pentium® 4, 1.2GHz or better (2.5Ghz or higher recommended) Windows® XP® (with SP2 or better) or Windows® Vista® (32 bit and 64 bit versions are supported) 512MB RAM minimum (1GB or more recommended) 1GB free HD space minimum (10GB or more recommended for recording) USB 1.1 or 2.0 port on computer for connecting Line 6 hardware (USB 2.0 port is required for TonePort UX8 and POD X3 family devices) Internet connection required for activation (once activated, Internet connection is not required, except for access to optional Guitar Port Online membership service). Host application that supports RTAS* or VST Plug-ins (for optional GearBox RTAS/VST Plug-In) MACINTOSH® Intel® or Power PC® based G4 1.5GHz or better (G4 1.67 or better recommended) OS X 10.4 or better 512MB RAM minimum (1GB or more recommended) 1GB free HD space minimum (10GB or more recommended for recording) USB 1.1 or 2.0 port on computer for connecting Line 6 hardware (USB 2.0 port is required for TonePort UX8 and POD X3 family devices) Internet connection required for activation (once activated, Internet connection is not required, except for access to optional Guitar Port Online membership service). Host application that supports RTAS* or AU Plug-ins (for optional GearBox RTAS/AU Plug-In) Known Issues: Master and Record section controls of GearBox app stay active in Tuner mode. They will have no audible effect in Tuner mode, but the application will re-sync all parameters when exiting Tuner mode. GearBox will not always save the correct amp model and/or settings when transferring to an X3 unit. The work-around at this point is to edit a parameter (i.e. move the volume knob up and then back to the original position), and then the tone will store/transfer correctly. GearBox Player will not playback .m4a files. You will need to convert them into .mp3 files. Changing Variax models during ‘Tone Transfer’™ with GearBox can cause MIDI device timeout error- please allow Tone Transfer to complete before changing Variax models. GearBox vocal presets default POD X3 input to guitar instead of mic due to them being created prior to POD X3 hardware - the input can be changed once the tone is loaded. GearBox application does not prompt save on application exit - users must remember to save changed tones before exiting the application. GearBox application defaults to Variax Electric panel. If an acoustic or bass is connected, please select the proper Variax type manually to sync software to the attached Variax. Rapid switching of Variax via 5 way selector switch on the guitar can cause the application to fall out of sync with the currently selected Variax model. Tones can get out of sync between POD X3 and Gearbox when doing special case tone selection. This includes tone swap, Lock Tone loading, and choosing to only load Tone 1 or Tone 2 of a patch from the X3 hardware. Please use the GearBox software to choose tones, or double click a different tone in the editor to resync the app and hardware. Gearbox reverts back to American Punk preset upon new launch if last tone is not saved before closing the application. Mac® OS X Exclusive Issues Typing in GuitarPort Online text fields causes system alert sounds. Player cannot open mono audio files. Drive knob redraw in GearBox can be sluggish when controlling Drive from X3 hardware. Turning the knob in GearBox software does not result in sluggish response, only from hardware.

This document explains how to update the flash memory of the Spider Valve Mk II using the FBV Mk II and Line 6 Monkey on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mac OSX 10.4.11, 10.5.8 and 10.6.x. Before you get started, you will need to have your Spider Valve Mk II connected to the FBV Mk II (Express or Shortboard) using a CAT-5 cable, and you will need to have your FBV Mk II unit connected to an open USB port on the back of your computer (do not use a USB hub). Be sure that your computer is connected to the internet. 1) Run Line 6 Monkey and you will be asked which unit you want to work with. Highlight the Spider Valve Mk II unit and select 'OK'. 2) Highlight 'flash memory' (it will turn blue), then select 'update selection'. 3) Select 'Yes' to continue. 4) Select "I Accept" for the software agreement and select 'continue'. 5) Select 'Yes' to update the Flash memory. Do not run any other programs or disconnect the cables while performing the update. 6) Allow the unit to go through the update process. This can take 5-10 minutes. 7) Select 'OK' when the update is finished. 8) You will see a green check mark in front of flash memory to show it is now up to date. Note: If you are having difficulty getting the Spider Valve Mk II to update, you can start the amp in "boot mode" by powering the unit up while holding the "Manual" and "B" buttons.

Update Instructions Available HERE NOTE: For X3 Live and X3 Pro users, see notes on subsequent firmware releases at https://line6.com/software/index.html. POD X3 Product Family Flash Memory v2.0 RELEASE NOTES: If you are a POD X3/X3 Live/X3 Pro owner, please download and install the latest version of Line 6 Monkey software and use it to update your POD X3 Live to this latest version of Flash Memory. For best results, calibrate pedal after update] POD X3 v2.0 is a FREE update to all POD X3 Product Family customers. It includes 12 additional FX inspired by the sounds of sought-after stompboxes and rack gear! What does it include? Vocoder: Our 14 band Vocoder is based on the classic rack units employed by recording studios and modular synths since the early '70s. Use the decay knob to slow down the Vocoder's responsiveness to create some haunting drones. Dynamic Delay: Made popular by the T.C. Electronic® 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay. While you play, the Dynamic Delay keeps the volume of the echoes turned down, so that the echoes don't overwhelm what you're doing. Dimension: Based on* the Roland® Dimension D. One of the first true stereo chorus units. Relatively subtle in its nature, it became an industry standard for double-track effects. Pitch Vibrato: Based on* the Boss® VB-2. It contained a circuit that produced bubbly vibrato, but was popular for its 'rise time' control that when engaged, sped up to where you last set it. Voice Box: Inspired by Vocoders, Vocal Tracts & Surgical Tubing. This model gives your guitar a sound that's typical of a classic talk box. V-Tron: Voice Box meets Mu-Tron® III. In this model your guitar again 'speaks' with an almost human voice, but now it does so in response to your playing. Octisynth: Inspired by eight armed denizens of the deep. Everyone knows that all you need is a bottleneck and a reverb tank to get whale sounds, but how about our friend the Octopus? Q Filter: Your very own parked wah! You've heard it before from Mark Knopfler and from Brian May of Queen's a wah 'parked' in one position. Pattern Tremolo: Inspired by* Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper. This effect is what you'd get if you could hook up a vintage keyboard sequencer to a tremolo. Frequency Shifter: A ring modulator gives you both up and down shifted frequencies. Here you can select just the up or down shifted frequencies. Barberpole Phaser: A classic effect from the world of modular synths. This phaser either sounds like it's always going up or always down depending on how you set it. Set to stereo you get both! Script Phaser: Based on* MXR® Phase 90. Just like the original our model only features a Speed control * All product names used in this webpage are trademarks of their respective owners, which are in no way associated or affiliated with Line 6. Q: What is the Spider FX Infusion? A: Spider FX Infusion is offered as a free firmware (1.52) update for all Spider IV (75, 120, 150, 150HD) amplifiers owners with a Line 6 FBV MkII Shortboard„¢ or Express„¢ Controller device. Q: Do I need to have the Mk II version of the FBV Express or shortboard to update the firmware on my Spider IV (75, 120, 150, HD150)? A: Yes, as the previous FBV (Mk I) does not have the USB connection necessary to connect to a computer for the update. You will also need to have the FBV Mk II Express/Shortboard registered to your user account to complete the install. Q: How do I connect my Spider IV (75, 120, 150, HD150) to my computer to perform the firmware update? A: See the following link for the Spider IV update information: Updating the Spider IV (75, 120, 150, 150HD) using the FBV Mk II and Line 6 Monkey Q: What is the Spider IV Edit software? A: The Spider IV Edit software allows you to edit and download tones for your Spider IV amplifier on your computer. See the following link for more information on using the Spider IV Edit software. Spider IV Edit v1.02 FAQs Q: Do I need to calibrate my Expression pedal on my FBV Mk II unit after I perform the firmware upgrade? A: Yes. See the following link for the information on how to calibrate your FBV Mk II pedal (and update the firmware if necessary): FBV/Shortboard/Express/FBV2 Controller: Calibration and F.A.Q.s FBV Mk II (Express and Shortboard) software update Q: What new effect models are included in the Spider FX Infusion firmware update? A: There are 28 new effects in the update 1.51 (there are no changes in the amp modeling). Here are the locations and descriptions of the new effects: FX-1 - Gain Blue Comp: Based on* the Boss® CS-1 Compression Vetta Juice: A Line 6 original originally created for our flagship Vetta II guitar amplifier. Boost & EQ: A stompbox compressor that also provides you with some EQ controls so you can further shape the tone. Screamer: Based on* an Ibanez® Tube Screamer®, the overdrive heard round the world. Killer Z: Based on* Boss® Metal Zone, the industry standard distortion pedal for metal players since 1989. Octave Fuzz: Based on the Tycobrahe Octavia, the classic fuzz+octave effect. Bass Overdrive: Based on* the Tech 21 Bass Sans Amp Clean Sweep: This is a wide range sweeping filter with a slow decay. It’s similar to Auto Wah, but with a band pass filter shape. FX-2 - Chorus/Phaser Analog Chorus: Based on* the Boss® CE-1 Chorus Ensemble. Square Chorus: Based on* the Boss® CE-1 Chorus Ensemble, but with a square wave acting as the magical modulator. Random Chorus: This chorus uses three different modulating filters all running randomly. Jet Flanger: Based on the A/DA Flanger. Lumpy Phase: Kinda like a Uni-Vibe®, but more radical. Warble-Matic: It can produce a nice mild phasey sound or with the depth maxed you can simulate the sound of an alien spacecraft . FX-3 - Delay/ Sweep Echo Analog Delay: Based on* the Boss® DM2 Analog Delay. Stereo Delay: Run this effect post in order to hear it in stereo, with one delay on the left, and another on the right. The time parameter sets the left delay’s time, while offset sets the right delay time as a percentage of the left. So, if you set time to 500ms, and offset to 50%, your right delay time will be 50% of 500ms in other words, 250ms. This effect will be summed in mono on a mono amplifier (i.e. Spider IV 75) but will be in stereo when using the stereo line out. Bubble Echo: Bubble Eko has a Sample and Hold filter on the repeats. A Sample and Hold filter takes a filter sweep (like the one on Sweep Echo), chops it up into little bits and rearranges them semi-randomly. Reverb King Spring Large Plate Small Room Tiled Room Chamber Medium Hall Large Hall Wah Chrome: Based on* a Vox® V847 Colorful: Based on* the wah part of a vintage Colorsound® Wah-Fuzz Weeper: Modeled after* an Arbiter® Cry Baby

A: You can import single tone patches or bundles at once, but not multiple single patches simultaniously. Q: Can I change the global (Auto FX, MIDI, Loop routing, etc.) parameters in Spider Edit? A: Global parameters can be changed on the amp, but cannot be controlled by the editor. Q: Are there any know issues with Spider IV Edit v1.02? A: There are some late breaking known issues with Spider IV Edit v1.02. We are aware of them and working on fixes. * The graphic representation of Pre/Post in the Signal Flow window at the top of Spider IV Edit v.1.02 can occasionally be out of sync with the preset currently loaded and may appear dimmed. The Pre/Post position is accurate in the Edit panes and the Spider IV amp, and can be 're-synced' with the Signal Flow window by toggling the Pre/Post switch. * If when clicking and dragging a preset in the Presets pane, the Preset is 'dropped' outside of the Presets window, the scroll bar may begin to behave erratically. Completing another click and drag to a 'legal' location, i.e. your computer's desktop or another location in the Presets window restores the scroll bar to its proper function.

ProTools & POD Studio Hardware Devices
Line6Tony posted a article in POD Studio / Tone Port / GuitarPort
Many new users have contacted us with questions regarding the usage of Line 6 POD Studio USB audio interfaces in conjunction with AVID's ProTools recording software. Here are a few important things to be aware of: ProTools version 8.05 or earlier requires that the user runs a proprietary DigiDesign,AVID or M-Audio audio interface device with this software. POD Studio devices cannot be connected to Pro Tools via USB and used as the main audio Input/Output device. Basically, the AVID-approved hardware device has proprietary security/licensing scheme embedded inside to allow the user to run the Pro Tools application. If the device isn't present, the program will not launch. Pro Tools 9.0 or later can interface directly with Line 6 interfaces. This version supports ASIO,Core Audio and third party audio interfaces. If you are currently running Version 8 and would like to use your POD, POD Studio or TonePort with Pro Tools, you will have to upgrade. Line 6 License Manager can authorize your Line 6 licenses to your computer, allowing you to use your Line 6 Software in any Pro Tools version without the need for a Line 6 interface. For more information, please refer to page 1.5 of the Line 6 License Manager User Guide. For more information about ProTools, you can visit AVID's website. Of course, you can use the Line 6 POD Studio USB interfaces with any recording applications that do not require a proprietary hardware device. Among these programs would be: SONAR, Cubase, Digital Performer, Live, Logic, GarageBand, Reaper just to name a few. -
M5/M9/M13 BACKUP INSTRUCTIONS *** This procedure is also explained in the M9 Advanced User's Guide and M13 Advanced User's Guide REQUIRED: A MIDI sequencer app such as Cubase or a sysex app -- if you don't have a sysex app installed, do a Google search for MIDI Ox (Windows) or Sysex Librarian (Mac) then download one or the other and install it. And ONE of the following: A MIDI interface that connects to your computer via USB (download the current Driver for it if you don't have it installed) & 2 MIDI cables OR A MIDI - USB interface such as the M-Audio Uno that comes with attached MIDI cables. You may need to download & install the latest driver from the manufacturer for this device. When your MIDI interface, Driver and sysex app are ready to go, follow PROCEDURE instructions below. Windows: Saving Scenes & Folders: 1. Run MIDI OX. You can do so from Start > Program Files > MIDI OX. 2. Set "Pass Sysex" & "Start Display" to On by clicking on the the 'REC' & 'SYX' boxes at the bottom right of the main window so it is highlighted blue. 3. Now go to View > Sysex. A Sysex View and Scratchpad window will open. 4. Go to the Sysex menu & select "Receive Manual Dump." When selected, you will see a window appear waiting on info from the M9/M13. 5. In Setup Menu of M9 (Press the 1B and 2B buttons at once, then press the MODEL SELECT knob 3 times until the display shows MIDI in the top left) or the M13 (hold the 'Looper Controls' button), select 'Dump All' to backup all your scenes, 'Dump Folder' to backup the current folder, or 'Dump Edit' to backup the one scene you have currently selected. Press the TAP button and the 'MODEL SELECT' knob at the same time on the M9 or just press the 'MODEL SELECT' knob on the M13 to begin the dump. Click 'Done' in MIDI OX when complete. 6. Under the 'Display Window' of MIDI OX, click 'Save As' and save it as a Sysex file type. Loading Scenes & Folders: 1. Run MIDI OX 2. Go to View > Sysex. A Sysex View and Scratchpad window will open. 3. Under the 'Command Window' menu, select 'Load File' and select the Sysex scene or folder file that is saved on your computer. If you are attempting to load an individual scene, it will be recalled to your current scene location, so change to the scene location on the M9/M13 you would like to overwrite. 4. Again, go to the 'Command Window' menu & select 'Send/Rec Sysex.' The display on the M9 (FX Unit 4 on the M13) will flash 'Receiving MIDI - Standby.' Once complete, your scene(s)/folder are now loaded. You do not have to set anything on the M9/M13, it will simply load the individual scene to the current location or load all the scenes in one shot once it receives the file. If you are loading a folder, it will load to the same folder location that it originated from. So, if you saved Folder 3 from the M9/M13, it will load back into the Folder 3 location on the hardware regardless of which Folder you may be looking into. **Note - Using 'Send Sysex' does not work. MIDI OX screen will read 'Sysex Receive' although it is sending to the M9/M13. MAC USERS: Saving Scenes & Folders: 1. Open Sysex Librarian. 2. You should already see your MIDI interface (or 'USB Uno MIDI Interface') listed in the dropdown menu at the top. If not you will need to download & install the latest drivers available from the manufacturer. 3. Click the 'Record Many' button. Use this even when backing up an individual scene. A window will appear showing it is awaiting info from the M9/M13. 4. On the M9/M13 select either 'Dump All' (all scenes), 'Dump Folder' (current folder), or 'Dump Edit' (current scene). Press the TAP button and the 'MODEL SELECT' knob at the same time on the M9 or just press the 'MODEL SELECT' knob on the M13 to begin the dump. 5. Once complete, you can rename 'untitiled.syx' in Sysex Librarian by clicking the name once it is highlighted. Loading Scenes & Folders: 1. Select the Sysex file you wish to load. 2. Click 'Play'. You will see 'Receiving MIDI - Standby' in the display on the M9 (FX Unit 4 on the M13). Your scene(s)/folder is now loaded. Again, if you are loading an individual scene, it will load to the current location you are in, so select the scene you wish to overwrite BEFORE loading the backup file. If you are loading a folder, it will load to the same folder location that it originated from. So, if you saved Folder 3 from the M9/M13, it will load back into the Folder 3 location on the hardware regardless of which Folder you may be looking into. M5 Backup Procedure: With a MIDI interface and a sysex application, you can back up all your M5 presets to your computer. This makes it easy to build a custom preset library, or exchange presets with others. To backup your presets, or to dump the current preset, follow these steps: 1. Turn bottom left PARAMETER KNOB to set your MIDI Channel (Ch. 1-16 or Omni - the default is Ch. 1). 2. Turn the Model Select knob to select DUMP ALL? (to back up all 24 presets) or DUMP PRE? (to back up your current preset). NOTE: There is an error in the M5 Pilot Guide.pdf regarding the following step in the SysEx dump procedures. Please refer to the information here for correct behavior: 3. With your computer set up to record sysex, press and hold ON/OFF while you press down on the MODEL SELECT knob. Repeat this to confirm or press TAP to exit out, if you choose. 4. The M5 will immediately transmit the sysex file to your computer, creating a backup of your Scenes that you can store and recall at any time. To load presets back into your M5, simply transmit the sysex file from your computer into the M5 via MIDI. This will immediately load the data into the M5's memory.

Here are the measurements for using screws to attach the POD Mount. These are sized for the next-length size appropriate screw and using the rubber feet as well for cushion bumpers. The actual well depth in the metal POD shells across all models is .40" or 10.2mm. If theyou wish not to use the bumpers, you should use either washers or nylon standoffs on the following mounting screws to make up the space difference. A round-down size screw would be too much to use and the threads may not bite into the cast metal shell correctly. Q: How many of each type of effect is there on the M9? A: Distortions/Comps/EQ/Volume: 30 Modulations: 22 Filter/Pitch: 26 Delays: 19 Reverbs: 12 Q: How do I register my M9? A: You can register any Line 6 product to your account here: Registration. For more detailed registration help, please see the Product Registration F.A.Q. . Q: What is the warranty on the M9? A: Twelve months from the date of purchase. Any Authorized Line 6 Service Center you visit will need you to provide a copy of the purchase receipt to validate date for warranty processing. Please be sure to have those materials ready, should you need to get your unit serviced under warranty. Troubleshooting & Service Q: How do I perform a Factory Reset on the M9? A: You can perform a factory reset by entering the Setup screen (press both B1 and B2 at once) and navigating to the Screen with the MIDI, GATE, Display header and turning the Model Select knob until the corresponding parameter displays RST FACT? You can then press down on the TAP footswitch then the Model Select Knob together twice to reset the unit. You can also re-install the flash memory to return the M9 to factory settings. Q: What is a "Scene"? A: A "scene" is a pedal board arrangement on your Line 6 M9 Stompbox Modeler with 6 available effects, up to 3 at once. Q: How many scenes are there and how do I access them? A: With the 2.01 update, you can create and save up to 6 different scenes in one Scene Folder. With 4 Scene Folders, you get 24 total scenes on the M9! Press 3A and the TAP button at the same time to access the scenes and turn the MODEL SELECT knob to access the additional folders. Q: Can I backup my scenes to my computer?A: You can backup your scenes via MIDI. Check out the M9/M13 Scene Backup document. Q: Which expression pedals can I use with the M9? A: We recommend using the Line 6 EX-1 expression pedal. You can also use any other expression pedal containing a 10k Ohm Potentiometer. Expression pedals allow you to change stompbox controls using your feet so you can adjust the sound while you play. On the fly, you can modify the delay time and feedback, speed of your tremolo, or sweep the pitch on the Pitch Bender effect. Connect an expression pedal to your M5 Stompbox modeler. Start with the pedal in the toe position. Once you have your effect parameters settings as desired rock the expression pedal to its heel position. Now set your parameters to your desired settings. As you move your expression pedal from heel to toe, you'll see all of the adjusted parameters move between these settings. All parameters affected by an expression pedal will show a pixel notch at the top indicating a parameter's setting for the toe position of the pedal. You'll also see a notch at the bottom that indicates a parameter's settingwith the expression pedal in the heel position. Additionally, if you don't want a parameter adjusted by the expression pedal, set the parameter's knob to where you want it with the heel down, then do the same with the heel up.

Deutsch Français For information on using the Workbench softwre, you can also check out the Variax Workbench User's Guide. Q: What is the Variax Workbench software? A: Variax Workbench software is an Editor/Librarian for the Variax 300/500/600/700 and James Tyler Variax Electric guitars, as well as the Variax 700 Acoustic guitar. This program can be used to edit and manage the guitar models in your Variax guitar. ***Please note, that the ALT TUNING knob presets of the James Tyler Variax guitars are NOT accessible through the current version of the Variax Workbench software (v1.73 as of this writing). Q: Can I use the Variax Workbench software to edit my Variax 300 acoustic or Variax 700/705 Bass instrument? A: No, the Variax 300 acoustic guitars do not have a Variax Digital Interface (VDI) jack, and the Variax 700/705 Bass instruments are not supported for Variax Workbench. Q: What Line 6 interface will I need to connect my compatible Variax instrument to my computer to use Variax Workbench? A: You will need one of the following devices to connect your compatible Variax instrument to your computer: PODxt Live, POD X3 Live/Pro, POD HD500, POD HD Pro,Vetta I (equipped with the VDI interface), Vetta II, or the Workbench USB Interface. Q: Can I use the Workbench software on a 64 bit operating system? A: Yes all of our software drivers are compatible on 64-bit operating systems. Q: Do I need to use the XPS box to power my guitar when using the Workbench interface or does the Workbench interface power my Variax? A: The Variax still requires power from the XPS footswitch when using the Workbench interface to connect to your computer. However, you will not need the XPS box if you are using a PODxt Live, X3 series, POD HD500, or Vetta series unit to interface with your computer. Q: Why can't I hear audio though my computer while I have my Variax plugged in through the Workbench device? A: The Workbench USB device is not an audio interface, but merely a USB interface to allow your Variax to talk to your computer. In order to hear your Variax, you will need to have it connected to an amp or other monitoring system. Q: With the Workbench package, will I be able to download new sounds into my Variax guitar? For instance, can I get the nylon string sound from your Variax acoustic into my Variax 300/500/700 or vice versa? A: The Workbench software only allows you to edit what is already in the guitar, thereby creating custom guitars internally. You will not be able to install new guitar models into your Variax. Q: What is the maximum I can pitch shift the sympathetic (12 string) strings in Workbench? A: On the 12 string models, you can pitch shift the sympathetic strings by one octave in either direction. Please note- when using the 'detune' option for the sympathetic strings, if you raise the tuning by the full octave you cannot detune the strings any higher than a full octave. Q: Does the Workbench package come with the Digital Variax cable included, or would I have to purchase that separately? A: The Workbench package comes with a 10 foot Digital Variax cable included. This cable is not designed for live use as the longer Variax digital cable is, since it only has the reinforced, hooded connection on one end, rather than both. The 25' version is available separately either through our online store or through any Line 6 dealer. Line 6 Store Q: I've changed one of my models to an alternate tuning and when I switch away from it and back, I get the old model for a few seconds before my new one kicks in. What's going on? A: Until you save your edited model, it has to load into the edit buffer from the swap buffer when you first access the switch. Since it's not yet stored in the guitar, it can take a moment. Take a sip of coffee, and you're golden. Q: I have the same model in two different banks. If I try and drag them both to the File Browser it works, but if I try one at a time, it asks me if I want to overwrite the patch? A: If you drag two models with the same name from the Device Browser to the File Browser at the same time, one of them will get a number added to the end to differentiate it from the other patch (actually this will work with more than two models as well). If you try and drag them over one at a time, Workbench can't tell that they're not the same model (since a drag to the File Browser doesn't carry memory location information along with it), so will assume that you're trying to replace an existing model with an edited version of the same model. The solution? Use unique model names. Q: I just saved a model that I edited from a bundle (or collection) back to that bundle and I'm still getting prompted to save when I close the editor? A: If you closed the bundle (or collection), you severed the tie between that bundle and the edited model. Workbench no longer knows what bundle it came from, only that it has an edited model in memory. If you're absolutely positive you saved it already, just click on "Don't Save". If you have any doubt, click on Save, and it will just save it as a single model in your default Workbench directory. Q: I can't see the bottom of the Editor or Tone Locker windows? A: Workbench needs a screen resolution of 1024x768. While you can flip between two sizes in the Tone Locker (that's what the little triangle in the lower right-hand corner is for), the Editor Window is a fixed size and will go off the bottom of the screen at lower resolutions. For just a little extra room, you can use the Autohide task bar feature on Windows (right-click in the unused portion of the task bar and select Properties) or hiding the Dock on a Mac OS X. Q: Can I adjust individual string volumes? A: Yes. When you open the Editor screen in the Workbench Software, under the "Editor" menu, you'll see a choice for "String Volume Setup" at the bottom of the menu. This brings up a group of 6 sliders to set the balance between strings. Remember that these are global settings (not per patch), so that changing the balance will affect all of your different models. Select "OK" once you have changed the strings to the desired levels. As a side note, it's normal for many guitars to have volumes that differ from string to string. One example of this would be guitars with combination of a fairly small fretboard radius and pickups with non-staggered pole pieces. It can also happen with guitars that have peaks in body resonance at or near the fundamental or one of the lower harmonics of a specific note. Q: What is the "Live" & "Studio" switch in Workbench for when using a Variax Acoustic 700? A: The live mode removes the room reflections from the guitar output. Q: I am getting strange text characters in my title? A: On the Macintosh, Option-1 and Option 2 are keystrokes for special characters. Since this functionality is built into the font designs, we can't turn it off. This will only happen if you have an insert point selected in one of the text fields, though, so you can easily work around it by clicking one of the the body, pickup or tone control select drop-downs (depending on which tab of Workbench you're using) to remove the insert point from the text field. Drag and drop may be a little bit different than what you're used to, as Java (the programming language in which Workbench is written) uses its own protocols for this. We'll try and spell out the differences here. 1. When in the Device Browser window of the Tone Locker, dragging one model to a different location will swap the two (ex. dragging Spank 1 over Spank 3 will swap their positions on the 5-way switch. Dragging Lester 2 over Special 4 will swap their positions on the Select knob and on the 5 way switch). 2. If you don't drop a model directly on top of another model in the Device Browser, but between two models instead, it will insert itself between the two, and slide everything else down one. when this happens all of the 'slid' models will show as editied (have the yellow exclamation mark next to them). If you really want this arrangement, be sure to performa a Sync and choose the "Write Selected Models..." option or your changes can get lost in the shuffle (sorry, couldn't resist the pun). Note: this only works in a bank. You can't insert a model from a different bank, although you can use the swap feature to move a model from one bank to another. 3. Dragging multiple selections from the Device Browser to a collection or bundle in the File Browser will behave differently depending on how the models were selected. A "shift-click" selection process will drop the models in the order in which they are in Memory. "Ctrl-click" (or "Command-click" on the Mac) to make a multiple discontinuous selection will drop them in the order in which they were selected. For example, if you Ctrl (or Command)-clicked on Spank 1, Spank 3, Lester 4, Reso 3, and then came back and selected Lester 2, they would copy to the collection or bundle in that exact order and not the order in which they appear in the Device Browser. 4. Dropping a model from a bank onto that bank name will place that model at the last (5) switch position and move everything above it up one. Q: Will the Variax Workbench graphics change with left-handed Variax? A: The strings appear on-screen the same as for a right handed guitar, the graphics will not be reversed. In other words, the high E string on the physical guitar will correspond to the high E string on-screen. Q: What are all the terms I hear about using Line 6 Workbench? A: To help you through the navigation of Variax and Workbench, please see the following short glossary. Bundle: A saved dump of the entire memory contents of a Variax. This includes all models as well as the bank and switch combination at which they're stored. Collection: A saved group of models. Collections can be of any size and contain internal folders for organization. Models stored in Collections do not include switch/bank information. Q: What's the difference between a bundle and a collection? A bundle is always a dump of the complete user memory contents of a Variax. This includes which memory (or switch if you want to think of it in more traditional guitar terms) position is used for each model. It will always have exactly 12 banks of 5 models each for a total of 60 models. If you wanted to quickly clone your Variax into a friend's, you'd use the Get Bundle button on your guitar, then hook up your friend' guitar and use the Send Bundle button to create a duplicate of your guitar. A collection is just exactly that - a collection of models all stored together. It could be a single model (although that would be a little silly), two models, or thousands of models. Inside a collection, tones can be arranged in folders, so you could put all of your models that use alternate tunings in one folder, or all the different variations on the T-Model body that you created into a single folder. A collection can have as many different folders as you'd like (although you can't nest folders or put a folder inside another folder in a collection). This is a great way to categorize a lot of models if you were, for instance, going to email them to a friend halfway around the world. Edit Buffer: The area in the Variax memory where a model is loaded when you select it from the guitar or double click on it in either one of the browsers. When you're editing a model in Workbench, you're working on a copy of what's stored in the guitar. This means that if you decide that you don't like what you've done, you can back out gracefully without having overwritten what's stored in the guitar. It also means that if you like what you've done, you need to remember to save it. Edit Window: Where the magic happens. In this window, you select body, pickup, tone/volume control, and tuning to build an individual Variax model. The Edit window has three tabs (Body, Pickup, Controls), a tuning section at the bottom, and a graphic representation of the guitar where you can do things like grab one of the pickups, slide it around, or rotate it. File Browser: The left panel of the Tone Locker window. This displays all the models, collections, and bundles that you have stored in your Workbench directory (or whatever directory you've navigated to). Device Browser: The right panel of the Tone Locker window. This displays the current memory contents of your Variax, including any models you may have edited and not yet saved (See the entry for "Sync") Model: A particular combination of body, pickups, tone controls, and (possibly) tuning. Swap Buffer: This loads the model in the guitar that you started from when editing. It's there so you can A/B between what you started with and what you've got. A good way to tell if you're on the right track, or if you need to start over. By the way, when you save a model, it's the currently displayed model is saved, so make sure you're looking at the right one before you hit that Save button. Sync: This button allows you to make sure that what the Device Browser shows and what's in the memory of your Variax are the same. It also gives you the option to go back to your saved user models.. Tone Locker: This window contains both browsers (File and Device) and is where you go to to file management, model organization, and shuffle models around in memory. Troubleshooting Q: I am experiencing MIDI timeouts and/or connection error when I launch Workbench. How can I resolve this? 1) Close Line 6 Monkey prior to opening Line 6 Workbench. 2) Reinstall the latest Line 6 Monkey, device drivers, and Workbench program from the Line 6 website. See the following links for more information: Line 6 Monkey Installation and F.A.Q. Windows: USB Device Driver Installation Mac: USB Device Driver Installation Line 6 Software 3) Remove all non-essential USB devices from your computer, and connect your Line 6 interface device directly to the back of the computer. If you are using a laptop, try multiple USB ports to see if a different port has a better USB connection. 4) Try a different Variax and USB cable, as well as a different Line 6 device to see if there is a hardware problem with the amplifier. Q: I am receiving a "Java Error" when I try to launch Workbench? A: Please see the following link for more information on resolving the Java situation: Java Errors with Line 6 Edit and Workbench v1.72 Release Notes/Known Issues What’s New? This build contains a fix for a Java compatibility which had the potential to affect some OS/hardware configurations Known Issues: • Using the X3 hardware to change models can cause the software and hardware to get out of sync. Please use either Variax Workbench software or the Variax itself for model and parameter selection. • Disconnecting USB when launching or running Workbench can cause the program to hang, or cause trouble quitting the program. Please quit Workbench before disconnecting the USB cable. • Hot swapping Variax guitars when Workbench is running may cause loss of communication. Please quit Workbench, then swap guitars, then re-launch the program. • Operating the X3 Live while launching Workbench (changing presets, turning the Select knob, etc.) can cause a MIDI timeout error. Please allow Workbench to completely launch before editing the POD X3 Live. Solution: Utilisez des noms uniques. Zusätzliche Informationen und Download: Line 6 Monkey Installation and F.A.Q.

Please go through the following checklist before updating the flash memory of your Variax guitar to ensure the update completes successfully: Ensure that the interface you are using to update the Variax with (Workbench Interface, PODxt Live/Pro, POD X3 Live/Pro, POD HD500/HD Pro, Vetta II) is NOT connected to the computer through a USB hub. Make sure to connect the interface into a USB port directly into the computer, especially into the back of a desktop. If problems persist, make sure to test all of the USB ports on the computer. Avoid plugging into USB ports found on keyboards, monitors, or laptop docks. [*]When using the Workbench Interface to update or edit the Variax guitar, ensure that a charged battery is in the guitar (JTV only) and a 1/4" TS mono cable is inserted into the guitar's output jack, or that the stereo TRS cable is plugged into the Variax providing power from the XPS power supply to power on the guitar. [*]On a James Tyler Variax guitar, ensure that the Volume knob on the guitar is NOT set to the '0' position as it will put the guitar into Power Save Mode. Make sure that the Volume knob is set higher than 0 when updating or editing the JTV guitar. [*]Please use the VDI Cable that comes with the JTV guitar when updating the flash memory on that guitar. Avoid using VDI or CAT5 cables longer than 10 ft. in length when updating any Variax guitar. [*]Close out any other applications running on your computer before updating the Variax guitar. Q: How do I update or re-install the flash memory on my Variax Electric 300, 500, 600, 700 and James Tyler Variax guitars? A: These instruments can only be returned to factory reset by reinstalling the flash memory. You will need to connect your Variax to the workbench software using your Variax enabled hardware (i.e. Variax Hardware interface, POD XT/X3 Live, POD X3 Pro, VETTA with VDI, or POD HD500), then you will have to connect your interface to your computer via USB. Once the guitar and interface are connected to the computer, you will need to run Line 6 Monkey. See the following link for more information on connecting your device to your computer and installing Line 6 Monkey: Line 6 Monkey Installation and F.A.Q. USB Connectivity with Line 6 Devices Once you have Monkey installed and your computer is recognizing the connection, see the screen shots for the reflash procedure: 1) Once you run Line 6 Monkey, Monkey may ask you to register. If you do not wish to register (or have already registered) select "remind me later". 2) If you want to reinstall the factory presets (or update the firmware), select "Flash Memory" the select "Reinstall Latest" 3) Select "OK" to agree to the software license 4) Select "yes" or "no" If you want to keep the patches on the instrument 5) Select "Yes" to continue with the update. Do not disconnect the variax during the update. 6) Line 6 Monkey will reinitialize the device and update the flash memory. You can watch the progress on the blue bar on the right side of Monkey. 7) Once the update is complete you will need to select "OK" to continue. Note: Older v1.71 and v1.82 Models might not be compatible with the v1.90 and v2.00 data block formats. Variax Bass 700/705 Reflash Factory defaults must be restored one at a time. Select the Model you wish to normalize, the place the blend and two tone controls in the detent (center) position. Now press the Model select pot down until the indicator light stops flashing. The Model should now be restored to factory settings. Use this procedure for any model you want to restore to the factory setting. The Variax bass series can also be "reflashed" using the procedure for the Variax electric guitars described above.

Spider Valve Mk II HD: (2) Sovtek 12AX7LPS or Shuguang Electron Group 12AX7B China preamp tubes, (4) Sovtek 5881/6L6WGC WXT matched set power amp tubes. 100 watts. Q: What are the function of the 12AX7 tubes? A: V1 is the booster to the output tubes, V2 is the phase inverter for the output tubes. When viewing the SV MKII HD100 upright from the back, V1 is on the right side. On the combo, V1 is on the left side. Q: Can the Spider Valve Mk II handle another 12A_7 style tube without damage to tubes or circuitry? A: Yes, the 12AX7/AT7/AU7/AY7 types, but as these tubes act as a phase inverter and a boost to the power amp (rather than traditionally "cleaning up" the preamp section), you may not get the result you are looking for. Care must be taken with this and should be done by a technician well practiced in tube technology and modifications of this type. Q: What Line 6 controllers work with the Spider Valve Mk II series amplifier? Controller compatibility chart Setup/Connection Q: Is there a bias switch to change the power tubes to EL-34s or other power tube types? A: No, the Spider Valve Mk II does not offer bias switchable options and was designed to only be used with 5881WXT type of 6L6 power amp output tubes. Q: Is there a headphone output on the Spider Valve Mk II series? A: There is no headphone output on the Spider Valve Series, but you can use the XLR output to go to a mixer, then use the headphone jack from the mixer. Q: Can I run my Spider Valve Mk II amplifier without a speaker load? A:No, you cannot run the Spider Valve Mk II series without a speaker load. Please see the following link for more information on cabinet connections: Cabinet Connection and Ohm F.A.Q. Q: Can the Spider Valve Mk II be run with a Variac? A: This is not recommended as the lower voltage can cause problems with the digital processing in the Preamp section of the Spider Valve Mk II. Q: Can I run a Palmer S.E., THD Hot Plate, Power Soak, etc. for speaker simulation or power attenuation? A: There are no known issues regarding the use of any direct recording simulators or power attenuators between the power amp output and the speaker cabinet, but if there is damage caused by improper connections or malfunctioning gear, it will not covered under the Line 6 warranty. Be aware of “red plating”, when too much current across the plate can result in damage to the tubes and nearby circuits. Q: Do the Spider Valve Mk II 112 and 212 combos support external speaker cabinets? If so, will the external cabs mute the internal speakers of the Spider Valve Mk II? A: Yes, the Spider Valve Mk II supports the use of additional cabinets. Please ensure that the ohm load is correct to avoid damaging your amplifier if you intend to use both the internal and external speakers simultaneously. Q: What is the bias voltage for the Sovtek 5881WXT matched set of tubes? A: 35 mV (+/-2mV) Q: Does the XLR output still send signal when the amplifier is on standby? A: In some cases yes, in some no. Spider Valve MkII actually has two different modes of Direct Out, which can be found in the SETUP menu in Edit Mode. They are Studio and Performance. Studio mode is a traditional, DSP POD-style output with speaker simulation and will function when the amplifier is in standby mode. In contrast, Performance mode takes a tap off the output transformer, then goes through the speaker simulation before going through the Direct Out. This allows the tubes to interact with the DSP, and because the amp has to be on to allow this to happen, there will be no signal at the XLR output in standby if Performance mode is selected. Q: Does the Spider Valve Mk II have an FX loop? A: the Spider Valve Mk II has a pre-amp out (effect send) and Power amp in (effect return) section. Q: Is the effect loop series or parallel? Is the effect loop mono or stereo? A: The effect loop is series mono. Q: Does the Spider Valve Mk II have MIDI ports? A: Yes, the Spider Valve Mk II amplifier series has both MIDI in and MIDI out ports, and the Spider Valve Mk II will accept MIDI program changes on MIDI Channel 1-16, from values 00-127. The MIDI channel assignment can be accessed by pushing the “preset” encoder and using the left/right arrow key to reach “MIDI”. This greatly increases the opportunity to integrate Spider Valve MkII’s into your existing rig, and will also allow you to update your amps firmware via MIDI. See the advanced user’s guide for the full MIDI story. Q: Can I send a MIDI output from the Spider Valve Mk II to another MIDI-capable Line 6 amplifier and control both amplifiers with one FBV controller? A: Yes, but as different Line 6 amplifiers have different MIDI implementation you will want to go through each control on the FBV to ensure that you get the desired control on both units. Q: Is there an editor where I can connect my Spider Valve Mk II to my computer and edit/store tones? A: Yes, Spider Valve Edit is the editing software that can be used to edit the Spider Valve Mk II. Please see the following link for more information: Spider Valve Edit FAQs Q: What do the FBV Shortboard series stomp, FX Loop/Function 1, and Function 2 do? A: The Stomp button activates the "boost" on both the original FBV shortboard series (Mark I) and Mark II controllers. The FX Loop (Mk I)/Function 1 (Mk II) activates the Noise gate. The Function 2 (Mk II only) activates the loop feature on the Spider Valve Mk II. Q: What do the FBV Shortboard MkII Function 1 and Function 2 buttons do with Spider Valve MkII? How is it different from the original FBV Shortboard? A: The Function 1 button activates the Boost setting saved with each preset. The Boost setting (up to 8db pre and/or post amp model) can be found by entering “edit mode” on the SV MkII and pressing the R arrow on the 4-way nav button. The button equivalent to Function 1 on the original FBV Shortboard is labeled FX Loop. The Function 2 button (FBV Shortboard MkII only) is equivalent to the Quick Loop button on the faceplate of the SV MkII, and arms the built in Looper. For full functionality of the Looper, see the Spider Valve MkII Advanced User Guide. In addition, the Stomp button activates the first Smart FX on both the original and MkII FBV Shortboard controllers. Q: Can I run the Spider Valve Mk II head with only the outer two power tubes (removing the inner pair) to operate at a lower output volume? A: Yes, it is safe to run the Spider Valve Mk II Head with two 5881WXT’s. It is recommended that the output impedance be run at "half" when running in this configuration. An example would be running the 8 ohm head output connected to the 16 ohm cabinet connection, or the 4 ohm output to an an 8 ohm cabinet connection. Line 6 recommends re-biasing your amplifier to 35mv after removing the tubes, as the current draw will have changed. This should be done by a technician with lots of experience with tube amps. Q: Where is the fuse located in the chain? A: The fuse is located between the 12AX7s and 5881WXT’s (there is no master fuse). Spider Valve Cabinet FAQs Q: What are the specs for the Line 6 4x12 cabinet? A: 9 ply, ¾" wood with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. There is no internal baffle. Q: What are the ohm load options for the 4x12 cabinet? A: The switchable ohm load options for the 4x12 cabinet are 16 ohm mono, 8 ohm stereo, and 4 ohm mono. Trouble shooting Q: What is the manufacturer's warranty for Spider Valve Mk II? A: The warranty for the Spider Valve Mk II amplifier is 12 months from the date of purchase, the tubes warranty is 90 days from the date of purchase. Q: How do I perform a factory reset on my Spider Valve Mk II? A: The factory reset for the Spider Valve Mk II series is to hold the "A" button while powering the unit, then pushing the presets encoder twice. Q: I hear a loud "pop" when I switch between certain presets on the Spider Valve MKII. Is this normal? A: Sometimes if the Channel Volume is set or saved too low on a preset a loud pop will be heard when navigating to it and away from it. This is because of the level difference between it and the other saved presets. Try adjusting the preset's Channel Volume above "12:00" and saving again. This should level out the difference between the presets and eliminate the popping sound. Q: Will using different brands of 6L6 tubes in the Spider Valve Mk II void the warranty? A: Yes, so no Ruby, Mesa, GT, JJ, Tung-Sol, or others. The characteristic curves are not close enough, and the vacuum-to-gas ratio (soft, medium, hard) of the tube plays a role in that. So it’s best to use the specified Sovtek 5881WXT matched set tubes. Q: My amp seems to be malfunctioning. What can I do as an end user?
