  2. Q: I plugged my CD/MP3 Player output to the input jack on my Line 6 amplifier and I am not getting any sound? A:Please confirm that the cable(s) and MP3/CD player are functional outside of working with your amplifier. Be aware that many Line 6 products need to have a 1/4" jack in the instrument input, or the audio send to the speaker will be disabled. A 1/4" to 3.5mm (1/8") adapter tends to work well in this application. Q: Will there be effects on what I plug into the CD/MP3 input? A: The CD/MP3 input routes directly to the speaker, meaning none of the controls affect the signal you feed it. Q: The volume from my CD/MP3 Player is much different than my amplifier preset? A: The volume output of the CD/MP3 Player is determined by the external audio device on most Line 6 amplifiers. Please use the control on the CD/MP3 Player to determine the output volume. Q: My external audio device (i.e. CD/MP3 player) has a different type of audio connected than the 3.5mm jack on my Line 6 unit. How can I get it to work? A: Your output need need to be routed down to a 3.5mm (1/8") jack to be input to the Line 6 unit. Please obtain the appropriate cable and/or adapters to route the audio correctly.
  3. Q: How can I reduce hum/noise/feedback when playing? -Single coils pickups used with higher gain settings will often cause noise. Try combining two pickups via the pick-up selector or trying a different guitar to see if the situation is the same. Make sure all the input and output jacks are tight. Check the instrument with different pickup settings to make sure it is not a bad pickup connection. -Higher gain settings tend to be the cause of many noise and feedback issues, try to dial the gain back on your amp a bit. Remember that heavy-rock bands often triple track (or more) when recording to create a thicker sound. -Turn your volume knob off when you are not playing (even during stops in a song when possible). -Turn off other volume controls not being used (i.e. volume trim pots) -Use the highest quality cables you can afford, and the shortest distance you can live with. RF can create many noises that can be eliminated with well shielded cables. -Experiment with distance and position between your guitar and amplifier/recording rig. - Avoid florescent lighting when possible. - Make sure that your instrument/rig is plugged into the same power source as the rest of your gear/band/PA system (to avoid ground loops). - User a power conditioner/regulator to filter RF and keep the voltage constant. - Experiment with the noise gate feature on your Line 6 unit or use an external noise gate. Q: I hear a "popping" sound when I turn my amp on, is this normal? How do I reduce the popping sound I hear when I turn my amp on? A: The popping sound is normal as it is a ramp of up the switch mode power supply. You can lessen the effect by: i) not having the input plugged in (disengaging the preamp section). ii) having the master volume turned all the way down (lowering the power amp output).
  4. Q: Where can I find the manual for my Line 6 controller? A: Instructions on how to use your FBV controller can be found in the back of your specific amplifier's user manual. See the link below. user manual . Q: Which Line 6 controller works with which device? A: Please see the chart for more information on which controller will function with each Line 6 device. FBV compatibility chart Q: How do I engage the Wah? A: To engage the wah, simply press toe down on the foot pedal until it clicks over and you see the WAH light turn on. It takes a fair amount of pressure to get it to click over (if you get no results, try putting your entire weight on the toe position when you are standing). Over time this function will get easier. Q: Is it possible to control MIDI devices using the Floorboard via my Line 6 unit? For example, when I change to a specific channel/bank on the Line 6 unit, is a corresponding MIDI Program Change message sent from the MIDI Out to my other MIDI device? A: Yes, the Line 6 unit will send MIDI program change messages via it's MIDI out port when controlled by the floorboard. Q: Where are the sounds stored on the FBV board? A: The presets are always stored in the Line 6 unit, the FBV series only changes/controls the Line 6 device. Data Cable FAQs Q: What type of cables are used with the Line 6 controllers? A: The Line 6 controllers use a standard CAT-5 cable with standard RJ-45 ends. These cables are very common in data connection and can be found in most local computer outlets. The FBV controllers ship with a black 25' cable included in the box. Do not use CAT6, as it is a different impedance than CAT5. Q: How long can the CAT-5 cable be before I have communication errors? A: We have tested with cable lengths up to 50' with no problems. Q: Can I use a "cross-over" CAT-5 cable with Line 6 gear? A: You CANNOT use a "crossover" CAT-5 cable, as it may send voltage to unintended locations of your FBV Controller and damage the unit. Q: I used a new data cable to connect my FBV series controller and I saw smoke? A: It sounds as if you may have used a network "cross-over" cable, which has a different wiring configuration (but the same RJ-45 connection) as a standard CAT-5 cable. If this is the case, voltage that was intended to power the the pedal were routed to the wrong place, resulting in damage to the pedal. This FBV series controller will need to repaired/replaced. Q: Can I use a CAT-5 data splitter from my Line 6 unit(s) to run multiple FBV controllers on stage (or run multiple Line 6 units from a single controller)? A: No, The FBV controller was designed to work on its own with a single amplifier. FBV Express F.A.Q.s Q: Why doesn't the tuner feature work on my FBV Express? A: The tuner feature on the FBV Express only works when used with amps or units that feature a built-in tuner. For example the Spider II HD75 has no built in tuner, therefore the tuner on the FBV Express is disabled. Q: Can I access more than one bank of presets with my FBV EXPRESS? A: No, the FBV Express will only access the A, B, C or D channels of whatever bank your unit is selected. For example, if your POD XT is sent to BANK 5, then you would be able to access and change between 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D. FBV and Shortboard F.A.Q.s Q: What is the difference between the FBV and the FBX controllers? A: These two pedals are identical. The pedal was originally released as the "FBX" controller, but the name was changed soon after the release to the "FBV" controller. Q: Are there any control functions on the FBV controller that will not work with all Line 6 devices? A: The FBV controller was designed for use with the Line 6 Vetta. While the majority of the buttons (i.e. A B C D) will work correctly, some buttons (i.e. amp 1/2, stomp 2/ 3, tremolo, favorite channel) may or may not have a function on your Line 6 Spider, Flextone, PODxt, POD X3, etc. See the documentation and FAQs for more specification application information. Q: I cannot see the patch name when editing my XT unit from my FBV (shortboard) controller? A: You will be able to see the patch name in the view window of the XT device, but you will not see the changes in the FBV controller window. External Expresion Pedal FAQs Q: What type of pedal do I need to use for an optional expression pedal with my Line 6 controller? A: The Line 6 EX-1 is the recommended expression pedal for additional control, and is connected to your Line 6 controller with a standard mono guitar cable. It utilizes a 10k Ohm pot. Q: When using an EX-1 expression pedal with an FBV shortboard, can I re-assign the EX-1 to control something other than volume? A: The Ex-1 expression pedal cannot be reassigned to a function other than controlling volume. Q: What are the specs for the EX-1? Line 6 Expression Pedal (EX-1) F.A.Q.s FBV MKII Questions Q: What is the difference between the original FBV series and the MKII series Express and Shortboard controllers? A: The MKII series Express and Shortboards will control any device that could be controlled by the MKI controller. See the following information for more specific physical changes: The MK II units have a USB port that can be used to connect to a computer for updating purposes or to be used as a controller for many recording softwares. Instead of Comp on the MKI, it's Stomp on the MKII. Instead of FX Loop on the MKI, it's Function 1 on the MKII. On the MKII, Function 2 is present. There is no such button on the MKI pedals, so Function 2 does nothing on older Line 6 products. The MKII Shortboard's view screen is 4 5/8" x 1/2", as compared to the 6" x 3/4" high view screen found on the MKI Shortboard. See the dimensions chart for other physical changes on the MKII series: Line 6 Product Dimensions Q: I noticed there is no driver for the FBV Mk II controller for connecting by USB. If you are having trouble with one of our four-button stompbox modelers, please try the following. - Use a different guitar, cables, and amp to make sure they are working correctly - Remove all other pedals between your instrument and the amplifier. Ensure that: - The cables you are using to test work correctly by plugging directly from the instrument into the amplifier. - All jacks and nuts on the pedal are tight. - The unit is receiving sufficient power from the correct power supply (Line 6 DC-1 for Tone core pedals, PX-2 for Modeling pedals). Do not use old batteries to test pedals. For Tonecore Pedals: * Lighter taps will set the tap tempo function while a heavier foot motion will activate the pedals on/off function. Make sure that you are activating the switch to turn the pedal on by putting your full weight on the pedal (sometimes it take a while for the actuator switch to be broken in). * Try a different Line 6 module in your dock, and try your module with a different dock to see where the malfunction is. For Stompbox Modeling Pedal (4-Button): Reset the pedal by having the power plugged in and pressing the A & D ('Tap' on the DL-4) button when plugging in the left mono input. If you are still having difficulty you will need to get the unit repaired at an authorized service center. All Line 6 Pedals carry a 12 month parts and labor warranty from the date of purchase. Please take a copy of the dated proof of purchase to ensure the warranty is covered. Product Repair Line 6 Product Warranty
  8. Francais. Deutsch. If you are having trouble with your Line 6 amplifier, please check the following points before taking your amplifier to your local Authorized Service Center: Q: I am noticing that I am getting volume/tone changes when playing at a high volume? A: Try "parking" the knobs (except master volume) at 100% to ensure that the knobs are not moving to the "current" location rather than the preset location. Recall a preset once the knobs are parked to ensure the tone you are working with is a preset rather than the current knob position. Q: My master volume has almost no change past 6? A: This is due to the volume pot installed on all Line 6 amplifiers. A solution to this would be to replace it with an "audio" pot, but this modification wouldn't make it louder - just smoother. Line 6 originally installed audio pots on the AXSYS, but players didn't like them because they made the amp feel "wimpy". Players also did not like the fact that they had to turn the amp up to about 4-5 before it would start "happening" and 7-8 on the gig. Even though there was still a good amount of headroom, player feedback was that they preferred the amplifier with the traditional volume pot, so that is the style used with Line 6 amplifiers. - Perform a factory reset of the unit: Factory Reset Procedures Volume and Signal Troubleshooting - turn off other volume controls not being used (i.e. volume trim pots) - Ensure there is no debris in the CAT-5 or input jacks. - Unplug all other units from the audio chain, as well as any CAT-5 cables and controllers. - Use a high-quality cable you know is functional (i.e. works in a different application) directly into the instrument input, bypassing all other effect units. - Ensure that the guitar/bass is outputting signal. Try the amplifier with another instrument you know is functional (if possible).Make sure all the input and output jacks are tight. Check the instrument with different pickup settings to make sure it is not a bad pickup connection. - Ensure that both the positive (white) and negative (black or red) wires are fully connected to the speaker, and that the speaker output from the amplifier is plugged into the correct jack (when applicable). - Check the effects loop (if the amp has one). If you're not getting any signal, try plugging into the RETURN side of the loop to see if there is any output. Likewise, with a source feeding the input, plug the SEND into another line level device to see if you're getting signal. Tone and Rattle Troubleshooting - Check the make sure all buttons on the unit are not stuck - Be sure that all screws on the unit (handle, corners, baffle boards, speakers) are snug. - Ensure that there are no foreign objects (i.e. silicon packs) stuck in the speaker enclosures Q: Are the tone controls on the on a Line 6 amplifier passive or active, and where is the "flat" level? A: Each amp model is different, and the controls behaves like the target amp. Most tube amplifiers will have a passive tone stack with makeup gain. Line 6 tone stacks are designed to behave just like the modeled amp (both the good and the not so good). Some amplifier tone stacks are the closest to flat when set B-0, M-10, T-0, but it is different for each model. Power Troubleshooting - Ensure that there is sufficient power coming from the power outlet into the amplifier. Try a different circuit to ensure there is not a power issue at the outlet. - Make sure that the both ends of the power cable are snug in their sockets. Tube Amplifiers Troubleshooting - Make sure the tube is firmly seated in the tube socket. - If the tube(s) make a popping sound accompanied by intermittent light from tubes, the tube is failing and needs to be replaced. - If there is "white frost" inside the tube, the tube has cracked and it must be replaced. - If there is a "tube" ringing (not due to loose screws), there may be a failing tube. Replace the 12AX7s individually and the matched 6L6 pairs to determine if a tube has failed. Replacing Tubes - Always replace power amp tubes with matched set(s) every 12-24 months depending on the amount of use, and have the bias checked and/or adjusted by an authorized Line 6 Service Center. - Preamp tubes (such as the two 12AX7s) only need to be replaced when they are microphonic (ringing sound from tubes when tapped), noisy, or damaged. Replacing tubes should be done a Line 6 authorized service center. The digital stage and analog tube stages communicate with one another, and so are not like the all analog tube (valve) amps from the 1960's and 70's. As a result, one cannot swap tubes out like in the old days. So please use the following specified tubes (valves) when the amp is taken to a service center. For Spider Valve series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7B China for pre-amps. 5881WXT Sovtek (matched pair), with the base cup bottom. 5881WXT Sovtek (matched quartet), with the base cup bottom for the HD-100 and HD100 MkII. For the Alchemist series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix low microphonic for V1-3 pre-amp positions. 12AX7AC5HG Ruby Tube HG-High Gain for V4. 12AX7B China for V5. 6L6GCMSTR Ruby Tube (matched pair) power amp. For the DT50 series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix approved for the DT50 pre-amps. EL34EH Electro-Harmonix (matched pairs) for the power amps. For the DT25 series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix approved for the DT25 pre-amps. EL84EH Electro-Harmonix (matched pairs) for the power amps. Visit your local Line 6 Service Center for servicing a tube amp, as these have High Voltage Shock Hazards. Produktreparatur
  9. Vetta II Post Delay Mix Issue On some patches with POST DELAY active, you will notice that if you turn DELAY off/on, the perceived mix will jump to %100. Please follow the steps below when the problem patch is active to resolve this issue: Select FOOT CONTROL. Scroll to Page 4 that say PEDAL 1. Use the black knob under DEST to assign PEDAL 1 to a different parameter (an fx you are not using on the patch), Go to page 5 and if PEDAL 2 is set to POST DELAY MIX, follow the same instructions above. Select SAVE twice to save the changes. Gain/Drive Reversal When Using Line 6 Edit Drive and gain for distortion effects are reversed when loaded into Line 6 Edit: After loading a tone or changing the model selection, the drive and gain values for distortion effects are reversed when comparing the amp display to Line 6 edit. When adjusting the drive or gain using Line 6 Edit or the amp, the correct control moves and jumps to match the value of the one you are moving. This effects all distortion effects, and also happens when loading a tone.
  10. Applications Q: What are the presets on the Lowdown Studio 110 and LD 15 amplifier? A: The Studio 110 and LD 15 have four savable channels directly on the amplifier, which are Clean (Eden model), R&B (Ampeg B15 fliptop model), Rock (Ampeg SVT model), and Grind (Sansamp model). The Studio 110 also has a “synth” option, accessed by pressing the R&B and Rock models simultaneously. The LD15 has a hidden “Brit model” which is accessed by pressing/holding the Clean and R&B model buttons as your turn on the power. The Clean and R&B lights will flash back and forth to indicate that you have changed the Clean model into the Brit model. Q: Is there a list for suggested settings for the LD Studio110 or LD15 amplifier? A: No, there is no preset list for the LD 110 or LD15, but you can download the dowdown Preset Chart from the manuals section and experiment with the settings (taking note that there is no amp model or channel volume control) Lowdown Presets Q: Are there any video tutorials I can view to learn more about the Lowdown? A: Please see the Lowdown Movies in the product description page. Lowdown Movies Q: Is there an editing software that works with the Lowdown amplifier? A: No, there is no editing software for the Lowdown series as there is no way to connect the lowdown amplifier to your computer. Q: Is there a "manual mode" for a LD Studio110 or LD15 like on the other LD series amplifiers? A: No, there is no manual mode for the LD Studio110 for the LD15. Q: How do I change the tuner's reference frequency on the Lowdown? A: The Lowdown Tuner Reference Frequency cannot be changed - it's 440 all the way. Setup/Connections Q: Is there a direct out on the Lowdown 110 or LD 15 amplifier? A: Yes, there are balanced line level XLR and unbalanced 1/4" outputs on the Lowdown 110, both of which output processed tone. The LD-15 has an unbalanced ¼” output which will output processed tone (which doubles as a headphone output). The XLR output of the Studio 110 is not affected by the output volume of the amplifier, and will send a cabinet simulated tone to your mixing console. The unbalanced ¼” output of the Studio 110 and LD15 is affected by the master volume setting, so keep this in mind when using this as a direct recording connection. Q: What if I do not want the cabinet tone but rather a unaffected tone (like a DI Box to go to the PA?) A: If you desire an unaffected bass tone in addition to the cabinet simulated tone, you will want to go into a DI box and send the DI signal to the mixing console. Be sure to have the instrument output of the DI go into the instrument input of the Lowdown amplifier to get sound from the Lowdown. Q: Can I use a Line 6 controller with the Lowdown Studio 110 or the LD15? A: No, there is no CAT-5 jack on the Studio 110 or the LD15 for a Line 6 controller. Q: Does the Lowdown Studio 110 or the LD15 have an effects loop? A: No, neither the Lowdown Studio 110 or the LD15 has an effects loop. Q: Can I connect an external pre-amp (i.e. Line 6 POD unit) to the Lowdown Studio 110 or the LD15? A: Yes, an external preamp can be connected to the instrument input of the Lowdown, be sure to send an instrument level signal rather than a line level signal to avoid clipping and/or damage to the Lowdown. An external pre-amp can also be run into the MP3 input jack, which would relegate the Lowdown amplifier to a “powered speaker”. Q: Can I connect an external cabinet to a Lowdown Studio 110 or the LD15? A: No, there are no external speaker connections on the Lowdown combo series Studio 110 or the LD15 Specifications Q: What's the rated wattage output and speaker size of the Lowdown Studio 110 and the LD15?? LD15: 15 watts/ (1) 8” speaker Studio 110: 75 watts/ (1) 10” speaker Registration and Warranty Information Q: What is the warranty on the Lowdown Series? A: the warranty on the Lowdown series is twelve months from the date of purchase. Q: How do I register the Lowdown? http://line6.com/account/registergear/ Troubleshooting/Service Q: How do I perform a factory reset on the Lowdown? A: The reset procedure for a Lowdown amplifier is to hold the Clean button for 5 seconds while powering the amp. Q: My amp seems to be malfunctioning. What can I do as an end user? Line 6 Amp Trouble Shooting Q: I am noticing hiss in the headphones with the Lowdown Studio 110? A: This may not be an issue on all Lowdown Studio 110 amplifiers. Depending on what brand of headphones you are using, as well as what amp model/settings are up, you may or may not hear hiss. Individual preference will determine if the perceived signal/noise ratio is acceptable. Please DO NOT return your Lowdown Studio 110 for a replacement unit if you feel that this is an issue. Our service centers would be happy to fix this issue for you. Keep in mind; this fix requires that one of our technicians perform a custom modification to the headphone amplifier, which requires that we open up your amp. The reason that some users may hear hiss is due to the gain structure design of this amp and a couple of surface mount resisters need to be replaced. Customer Support is unable to guide you through the repair and only our authorized service centers can take care of this fix. NOTE: If a customer opens up their amp and attempts to alter their electronics in any way, they will void your manufacturer’s warranty on their Lowdown Studio 110. Also, keep in mind that the repair may take several weeks based on the specific service center’s turn around time. If the nearest service center is too far from your location, and you need to ship your unit to that service center, Line 6 WILL NOT cover the associated shipping costs If you are aware of the above information and you still wish to have your amp repaired, Line 6 will cover the costs of parts and labor. Please have your receipt ready before you contact a service center. If you cannot find your receipt, please talk to the dealer where the amp was purchased, and request a duplicate receipt. Q: Where can I get replacement knobs/speakers/logos for my Lowdown amplifier? Line 6 Store Q: Where can I download a Lowdown amplifier manual? Line 6 Manuals
  11. Phantom power is DC (or direct current) used to power certain microphones, the UX2 and KB37 offer 48-Volt signal to a condenser microphone by connecting it to the XLR input on the unit. The UX1 does not have phantom power, if you have a microphone that requires such power you will need to get either a standalone microphone preamplifier or one that is built into an audio mixer's input channel. Also available are stand alone phantom power boxes. (A good example of this device is the Rolls PB23 Phantom Power Supply). Phantom power is not harmful to mics that don't need it. If a mic does not need phantom power it will ignore the 48-Volts being sent the the microphone. Even with the Phantom Power on, your UX2 or KB37 can have both a mic that requires Phantom Power and a mic that does not require Phantom Power.
  12. English: The most common reason you would get no sound from your microphone is that you do not have the "Source Select" drop down menu set to Mic 1. This is located in the upper left hand corner of Gearbox (middle of the POD Farm application window, to the right of the "MUTE" button). If you own a TonePort UX1 and have selected Mic 1 and you still get no sound, your microphone may require Phantom Power. UX1's do not provide Phantom Power to the XLR port. Only UX2's, KB37's and UX8's have this feature.
  13. Deutsch Français Q: What are the common ohm ratings for guitar speaker cabinets? A: The common ohm ratings are 16, 8, and 4 ohms. It is important to look at the cabinet inputs to correctly match the rating for your setup to ensure the optimal output and performance of your amplifier. While some ohm mismatches are acceptable, other ohm mismatches can cause failure in your amplifier's power amp section. REMEMBER: Impedance is measured in (Ω) ohms. Impedance determines how much current will flow through a component. A very high impedance allows a small amount of current to flow (i.e. a 16 ohm speaker load draws less current than an 8 ohm amp is ready to supply, but it will work safely). A very low impedance allows a large amount of current to flow (i.e. a 4 ohm speaker load draws too much current from an 8 ohm amp, ultimately overheating the amp). Unacceptable Ohm Mismatches: When connecting any amplifier to an external cabinet it is important to keep in mind that the ohm load of your cabinet should not be lower in number than the ohm rating of your amplifier (which can cause the amplifier to fail). I.e. - If the amp output has an overall rating of 8 ohms DO NOT run with an external cab that has an overall rating of 4 ohms. Acceptable Ohm Mismatches: It is acceptable to run the overall ohm load output of an amplifier to a cabinet that is higher in number. I.e. If your amp output has an overall output rating of 8 ohms you can run into an external cabinet that has an overall rating of 16 ohms. Be aware that you will lose ~15-20 percent of perceived volume with solid state power amplifiers when running this type of ohm mismatch, but you will suffer no failures. Q: Can I run two cabinets with different ohm ratings? A: We do not recommend running cabinets with different ohm ratings, as it may create an ohm load that your amplifier will not recognize and can possibly damage the power amp output section. Q: How do I connect my Line 6 amplifier to the external speaker cabinet? A: Your manual should explain most situations you would run into. Feel free to contact us and ask questions re: specific setups not covered in the manual and we will add them to this document. For example: Q: Can I run my Line 6 amplifier without a speaker load (i.e. not connected to a speaker) A: All Line 6 amplifiers (with the exception of the Spider valve series) are safe to run without any speaker load connected. The DT series and Spider Valve series amps **must have a speaker load connected to avoid damage to the output transformer.** Spider II, III, IV Cabinet Wiring - The Spider II & III HD150s are set up with 8 ohm stereo outputs to match the Spider cabs. You will want to use two speaker cables to connect to both jacks of the cabinet. If you do not connect both speaker outputs to an 8 ohm load (or higher) you can suffer a power amp failure. - Spider II & III HD75s runs 4 ohms mono. You will want to use two speaker cables to run the 8 ohms stereo cabinet from the head to the cab (creating a 4 ohm load) If you only use one cable, you may only get two of the four speakers to function. - Please consult the labeling on the cabinet or use a multi-meter to measure the ohm rating to ensure you will not induce failure with an incorrect connection. Q: Is there a video tutorial where I can see different cabinet connection options? A: Line 6 Head and Cabinet Connections Q: I am running my Spider HD with a cabinet from a different manufacturer which has a different ohm configuration that what the Spider HD needs. What can I do? A: Please see the previous information on acceptable ohm mismatches. If the ohm mismatch is not acceptable you may need to have your cabinet modified to conform to the needs of the Spider HD series. Please have this modification performed at your nearest Line 6 Service Center. Q: What are the wattage outputs and ohm loads on the Line 6 amplifiers not already discussed? 15. Please use the directions below in order to record two inputs from a TonePort/POD Studio UX1/UX2 USB device from POD Farm simultaneously: In POD Farm: Create a dual tone input in POD Farm (i.e. Mic 1 & 2, Line 1 & 2, Inst & Mic, etc). In Your DAW (Recording Application- we will use Ableton Live Lite as our example): Go to "Options/Preferences". Click on "Input Config" at the bottom. Make sure that all of the selections are green in "Input Config" and "Output Config". If they are not, click on them so they appear as green and click OK. Create two audio tracks. On each track you will see "Audio From". Make sure that says "Ext. In". In track one select "1/2". For track two choose "3/4". Now the mic will be recorded on one track and your guitar will be recorded on the other. To arm both tracks for recording, please hold control and then click on the "Arm" button. For more detailed info, please watch the online video at Ableton's website here: http://cdn1.ableton.com/movies/recording_audio.mov For GarageBand: First, ensure that you have a DUAL Tone setup in POD Farm. In the [MIXER] Section of POD Farm, ensure that REC SEND: UX2 1-2 is set to “Tone 1 (Instrument)” and REC SEND: UX2 3-4 is set to “Tone 2 (Microphone 1)”. In GarageBand: Input Source for INST 1 (GarageBand Track) must be set to Stereo 1 / 2 (UX2) Input Source for MIC 1 (GarageBand Track) must be set to: Stereo 3 / 4 (UX2). Now you should be able to record both input sources simultaneously in GarageBand.
  16. Q: I am getting strange noises when I use my Variax. What can I do? - Piezo pickups can be susceptible to Radio Frequencies and Electro-Magnetic Frequencies. Keep cell phones, radios, and computer gear as far away as possible. - Use the highest quality cables you can afford. Be sure to use a high-quality shielded TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) cable if you are using the Line 6 XPS. - Make sure the jack on the instrument is tight and the ribbon cable is seated at the coffin assembly and the jack correctly. - Experiment with lowering the gain on the presets you are using, or using the noise gate when available. - Turn your volume knob off when you are not playing (even during stops in a song when possible). - Experiment with distance and position between your guitar and sound source (amplifier and/or computer speakers). - Avoid florescent lighting when possible. - Make sure that your rig is plugged into the same power source as the rest of your gear/band/PA system (to avoid ground loops). Q: Can I use altered tuning with the 12-string models? A: The processor on the Variax cannot provide 12-string emulation in addition to altered tunings. Although a 12-string modeled guitar can be "altered", once the model is altered the 12 string modeling will revert to 6 string modeling. Line 6 does not reccomend using 12-string models for altered tunings. Attached is a Word document containing advice and tips on alternate tunings with your Variax for downloading purposes. They are also included in the body of this FAQ. You can also visit our website and read some helpful How-to Articles about alternate tuning tips. *Four Variax Alternate Tuning Tips* With the development of Variax Workbench software, you can now tune your Variax electric to any alternate tuning you like. The Variax Acoustic 700 has this feature built into the guitar itself. With the physical Variax tuned to standard pitch, however, the Variax DSP must create the alternate tunings in real time, note by note as you play. This is no easy task, and as with any developing technology, there are limitations. To get the best musical experience from your alt-tuned Variax, please check out the following four Alternate Tuning Tips. They address the most frequently asked questions of Variax owners. 1. Guitar Volume Balance: If you hear the standard tuning of your physical Variax along with the alt-tuning, your ears may be fooled into thinking the alt-tuning is out of tune. This is especially true for Acoustic 700 owners, but the solution is easy. In a studio situation, turn up your headphones; in a live situation, turn up the volume of your alt-tuned guitar amp or stage monitor so that it drowns out the physical guitar sound. When you adjust your guitar volume balance so that all you hear is the alt-tuned guitar, your alt-tuning will sound the way you expect it to. 2. Odd-Sounding Notes: If you use pull-offs, especially on an open G string that's tuned down a full step or more, or if you use Capo mode and tune several frets up or down and play harmonics or hammer-ons, you may sometimes hear odd-sounding notes. The general cure for this is to adjust your playing technique so that you play very cleanly when doing pull-offs, play with a lighter touch on extremely alt-tuned notes and harmonics, fret your notes accurately, and avoid any problem zones that may produce odd sounds. It's not difficult to get clean-sounding alt-tuning tracks. It just takes a little time to adapt to the particular alt-tuning you're using, then avoid any obvious problem spots you may encounter by adjusting your playing technique and choice of notes. 3. Ringing Overtones: When you play certain notes and you don't mute your other strings, occasionally a note you're playing may cause a harmonic to resonate from a non-muted string. This can be a good thing, but sometimes it may result in an odd sound as in #2 above. The solution is to mute the strings you aren't using, especially when playing single notes. This way the DSP won't be 'confused' by unwanted notes resonating against the intended note. 4. Amp Sounds: For Variax Acoustic Models, use an Amp Bypass setting or go direct whenever possible. Acoustics, Resos, Sitar, etc. don't like preamp gain, so cleaner is better in order to bring out the full range of these Models. If you use a Vetta II or PODxt Live, it's a good idea to set up an Amp Preset for each of your favorite alt-tuned Variax Models, and save the Variax Model with your Amp Preset. If you are experiencing an output latency when in an Alternate Tuning this is a known issue. This is a result of the time it takes for the DSP in the Variax to detect the pitch, change it to a different pitch, and then output the note. This may require you to change your playing style slightly in order to compensate for the latency.
  17. Q: I tried to buy something from the web store and was unsuccessful, but I got charged anyway. What's going on? A: What has likely happened is that you are seeing the results of an authorization hold on your credit card. According to Intuit, publishers of the TurboTax and Quicken financial software products: "...Authorization hold is the practice within the financial or banking industry of authorizing electronic transactions that are done with a debit card or credit card. This balance is held as unavailable either until the transaction is cleared by the merchant (also called settlement), or the hold "falls off." In the case of debit cards, authorization holds typically fall off the account (thus rendering the balance available again) anywhere from 1-5 days after the transaction date depending on the bank's policy..." If you see multiple charges on your monthly bank statement from the same web store purchase transaction, please reach our staff at www.line6.com/company/contact, or call us at 818-575-3600, option 2 for Customer Service M-F 8am - 12pm Pacific time. Q: I want to return an item I bought on the web store. Where do I send it? A: To return a web store purchase, you must contact our support team to set up your return authorization. Please reach reach our staff at www.line6.com/company/contact, or call us at 818-575-3600, option 2 for Customer Service M-F 8am - 12pm Pacific time. Q: Where are my credits?! I returned my software a month ago and it's not in my bank account! A: Credits that are made to our users are credited towards the credit card or PayPal account that was used during the purchase, and are typically available within 3-5 business days. There are a number of circumstances that may extend this time frame, including when the credit to your account was processed, your credit card company's internal policies, and if the card is issued by a foreign or domestic bank. Please ensure that you have checked the records for all of your credit cards, as we have seen previous cases where the credit was posted to a different credit card than the one you used for the transaction. This will happen if the credit card you used to make the purchase has since been canceled. If you still do not see a refund after checking all cards, please contact us to verify which card we have credited.
  18. Once you've installed the latest drivers for your Line 6 USB device on your computer's operating system, connect audio monitors/speakers to the audio outputs of your Line 6 USB device or use the headphone output jack. The built-in soundcard output of your computer will not output processed amp/effect tones from GearBox/POD Farm/DAW software. Also, connecting the audio output from your POD Studio/TonePort/POD interface into the audio input of your default soundcard will result in you hearing latency (short echo/delay). Please connect your computer speakers or headphonesdirectly to the output of the POD Studio/TonePort/POD interface device and not your original computer's soundcard output.
  19. Q: How do I go about bypassing the amps and cabs in my Vetta? A: The amp models can be bypassed on any preset channel, simply turn the amp model knob to the left to amp model "1" this is amp model bypass, then "Save". With the amp model in bypass the cabinet model will follow, "No Amp, No Cab". Q: How can I set the volume pedal on the FBV or FBV Shortboard to be "always on"? A: All you have to do is "Save" it in the on position into each preset. Simply go into each preset, activate the volume pedal and press SAVE. Q: Can I load Vetta II presets into my original Vetta? A: No, Vetta II presets loaded into your non-updated Vetta can cause your amp to freeze up if they contain amps, effects, or other features that are not in the original Vetta. If this happens, simply turning the amp off and back on again should bring things back to normal, but you probably want to avoid that, especially at a gig or session. Q: Are the post effects in the Vetta routed after the cabinet modeling? A: Yes, the Post Effects come after the Cabinet Models. Q: Does the Vetta have an Acoustic Simulator? A: The Vetta does not include an acoustic simulator but it does feature two amp models that were designed to be used with acoustic guitars with piezo pickups and electric guitars that feature one of those fancy, newfangled bridges with the 'acoustic' pickup built in. Q: If I have a Variax plugged into a PODxt Live or Vetta, can I run Workbench and Line 6 Edit at the same time? A: No. Due to the MIDI connection between the Vetta II and the computer, there are some messages sent when running both programs that do not allow them to be run at the same time. Q: Is the Vetta Midi controllable? A: Yes. please consult the manual for the midi implementation list. Line 6 Manuals Q: Why doesn't Vetta do delay spillover? A: For delay and reverb trails to work correctly, you would need an entire second processing engine (or most of one), and a separate signal (or data) path. Let's take an simplified example from a PODxt: You've got a screamer and tube delay pre with 2 repeats, a Blackface Lux model, a Rotary Horn and a light plate reverb post. You switch to a different patch that has the delay switch to a digital in post with 6 repeats, shuts off the mod, but changes it to a U-Vibe and moves it pre, changes the reverb to a heavy Medium Hall, and switches the amp model to Insane. If you just take the delay buffer and dump it out, you get the sound of a tubescreamer (since what's in the buffer actually gets processed by the tube and wow and flutter models as it leaves the buffer) with none of the delay tonality, amp tone, no modulation, no reverb. Or, you run it through the new models and get something completely jarring. To make it sound reasonably natural, you need to process the buffer through the tube delay model, through the Blackface Lux model, through the Rotary Speaker, and through the plate reverb model. In other words, just about the exact same amount of processing that it takes to do a whole sound anyway. So, you have to have a second processor, just as powerful as the main one, that is only used to do this when switching patches (because if you use it to do anything else, you might not have enough horsepower available to do all the processing required. In other words, a second XT, lying fallow, except for those few seconds a night that you might need it). It's like buying a second car that you constantly have on a tow bar behind your regular car, just in case you run out of gas. Not very practical.
  20. Q: Can I go direct from the Vetta to a recording console or PA system? A: Yes,the Vetta II can be used with or without speakers in a studio or live performance application directly through the board. Page 4.32 of the Vetta II Pilot's Handbook it describes how to turn the outside speaker cabs off in order to use the head to run direct. The second page that comes up from the Output Setups button lets you turn both the internal and any external speaker cabs off. When you have turned the speakers off, the Master Volume Control sets the level for the direct outs. Q: How do I hook up an external effects processor to my Vetta? A: While we've tried to anticipate all of your effects needs, you may still want to use other effects with Vetta. That's okay, we won't be upset. Obviously, if you've got actual physical world stompboxes you want to use, run them in front of Vetta as you would do with any other amp. If you've got rack mount effects or other devices that work at line level, these can be hooked up in Vetta's effects loop. This loop is switchable (from the front panel or from the FBX foot controller), the on/off state is remembered with each channel that you save, and you can even route the loop either series or parallel. To hook something up to Vetta's loop, you'll need a pair of what are commonly referred to as 'Y' or 'insert' cables. These cables have a 1/4-inch TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) plug on one end, and that splits out to a pair of 1/4-inch TS (Tip, Sleeve) plugs at the other end. You'll need one of these for Vetta's loop send, and one for the return. An effect insert uses these cables to allow input and output signals to both be connected at the one jack. If Vetta had an effect insert (like many mixing boards do), you'd jack the TRS end of a single one of these cables in this insert, then one of the split ends of the cable would go to the effect's input and the other would go to the effect's output. But as the picture shows, we're not doing that. Once you've got your external effects hooked up, press the LOOP button as needed to get the loop turned on. The next step is to set up the send and return levels for the loop. Press the Edit button. If the Loop page isn't showing already, press the Loop Button and it will be. You'll see something along these lines: The left most knobs, labeled Amp1/L Send and Amp 2/R Send control your signals differently depending on how your loop is routed. You'll want to check out Effect Routing on page 4.17 of your manual in order to get your loop properly set for the particular sonic madness you have in mind. When the loop is first in the chain of post effects or in any parallel routing, the loop sends are getting signals from the discrete outputs of Amp 1 and Amp 2, regardless of how the amps are panned. When it's not first in the post effects signal path, routed in series or chain, the sends are from the left/right outputs of the previous effect. When the loop is routed parallel or chain, set the mix control on the effect in the loop to 100% wet. Use the Return Mix knob on the display shown above to determine how much of the effect you want to hear. If you instead try to run your external effect at something other than 100%, you'll get a bad sonic experience known as 'comb filtering' to audio engineers if the external effect unit is digital, and you'll get your stereo signals collapsing to mono if your external effect unit sums its left/right inputs to mono (as many effects processors do). When the loop is routed series, use the mix control on the effect in the loop to set the mix. No worries about comb filtering here, but if your effect unit sums its left/right inputs to mono (often, the 'direct' signal is summed, even when the 'effect' part of the signal is stereo) then the fancy panning you set up on Vetta may be lost when you hit a chord. Q: What will happen if I connect a mono effect pedal to effect loop of the Vetta Combo? A: The effect from the mono pedal will only effect the "left" side of the signal when panning the signals hard left/right. We reccomend panning the center for both channels if you plan to use a mono effect in the stereo effect loop. Q: How can I get my Heilsound Talkbox plugged with a Vetta Combo? A: In order to use Heil Talkbox with the Vetta, connect a speaker cable from the Vetta's Left Speaker Outputs to the input on the Talkbox. Next, you'll need to customize the speaker leads connected to Vetta's left speaker. Basically, you'll need a cable that has a 1/4" speaker jack on one end (tip +, sleeve -) and two, crimp terminal clips on the other. Connect the 1/4" speaker jack to the Talkbox output and the two, crimp terminals to Vetta's left speaker. Make sure you keep track of which clip is positive and which clip is negative and make sure they are connected to the speaker correctly. If the sound coming from the speaker seems to be strange, you may need to reverse the clips. Connect the Talkbox tube and your microphone to your P.A. (or second amp) as instructed in the Talkbox manual. When connected in this manner you will hear the Talkbox coming out of the P.A. speakers (or second amp) and the amp's normal tone coming from Vetta's right speaker. If you want to mute the amp's normal tone and just hear the Talkbox, you will need to pan the Vetta's amp models all the way to the left, in the Vetta presets that you will be using with the Talkbox. This can be done via the Amp/Cab Details menu, Page 2, Amp Only knobs.
  21. Q: Is the Variax a MIDI guitar? A: No, the Variax is a real guitar, and the guitar does not send MIDI signals. All of the sounds available in the Variax start with the actual string vibrations of the Variax itself. Our proprietary modeling process shapes the raw string signal to replicate the sounds of the modeled instruments. Q: What type of cable can I use with the Variax? A: In order to use the supplied XPS-DI direct box/power supply to deliver power to the Variax, you will need to use the supplied 1/4-inch TRS cable or equivalent. If you use the internal batteries as your power supply, any mono 1/4-inch cable will work. Q: How do I know when it is time to change the batteries? A: When the batteries have lost their charge the indicator light will continuously flash, and the audio may become distorted or intermittent. Q: Can I use rechargeable batteries in my Variax? A: Yes, although rechargeable NiCad batteries will not last as long as alkalines, as they deliver substantially less current. Rechargeable alkaline batteries would be a longer lasting choice. Q: How long will batteries last? A: The average life of a set of 6 alkaline AA batteries should be approximately 12-14 hours. So-called 'Heavy Duty' (carbon) batteries will usually last less time. The 9-volt battery should only be used as an emergency power supply and will last approximately 1-2 hours. To help insure the longest possible battery life, be sure to unplug the 1/4 inch jack when not in use. Q: How is the Variax different from the Roland VG-8 or VG-88? A: The Variax is self-contained; all of the sounds come from inside the guitar itself. The models were specifically developed for the body resonance and transducer of the Variax for the highest possible accuracy of modeling. The VG-8/88 is an external processor that is connected to a guitar via a separate hex pickup. With the VG system, variations in tone may occur due to the guitar the pickup is attached to, and the specific placement of the pickup. The VG-8 includes basic amp modeling and effects in addition to its guitar modeling functions. With the Variax, we concentrate on the guitar characteristics only and can deliver a much higher degree of accuracy and detail. Q: Where is the Variax made? A: The Variax was designed entirely by Line 6, by experienced luthiers, engineers, and industrial designers. The Variax was originally manufactured in Korea but now is manufactured in Indonesia and China and assembled in the U.S. Our Variax guitars are made world-class facilities with the latest computer-controlled manufacturing equipment. The manufacturer prefers to remain nameless because of its relationships with other guitar companies, but they are building the guitars to Line 6's specifications. Q: Can the Variax be run through any manufacturers' effects devices? A: Yes, the Variax will work with any manufacturers' effect devices. Batteries in the Guitar will allow you to connect to Line6 and third party effects processors and wireless systems. Q: Can the Variax be used with a wireless system? My wireless transmitter does not have a TRS plug, will it still work? A: As long as you are powering the Variax with batteries, you can use a wireless like you would on a regular guitar. The TRS cable is only needed when you are using the power supply. Q: Does the Variax work with only Line 6 amps? A: The Variax works with any guitar amp from any manufacturer, but Line 6 amplifiers may have special proprietary connections for the Variax instrument. Q: Will the Ebow work on the Line 6 Variax? A: Yes, it will work fine but remember that it won't get loud over the magentic pickup because it is a piezo pickup. Q: Can I feed two amps from the jack of my Variax guitar using batteries and a y-splitter cable? A: No, the Variax jack is not a "real" stereo jack. The Variax jack does use a TRS plug, but the "sleeve" portion of it is used to transmit power rather than audio. The TRS cable is not required if you are using batteries. Q: Is there a Variax Electric reference sheet available? A: Yes there is, although not an official Line 6 document. Your collegue Line 6 enthusiasts have created several documents that will give you an overview of the models inside your Variax. You can download and print them for your own use. Download it from Vettaville and scroll down the page for the different documents Q: Is it possible to produce feedback through an amp with the Variax? A: Yes. Since the sound from the Variax starts from the strings, blasting a lot of energy into the strings by standing in front of a loud amp will produce feedback. And since the Variax uses a piezo bridge instead of conventional magnetic pickups, you won't get microphonic squeals.
  22. Q: I have a blank screen on my Vetta? A: If you can't see any characters on your Vetta when you are going through the update, please angle your Vetta or look very closely at the screen at an angle. You should see a faint readout on the screen. If you cannot see anything at all (and adjusting the contrast does not help), you will need to reinstall the firmware. See the Vetta Software Update/Reflash Procedure for the correct method for reflashing your Vetta. Line 6 recommends (but does not officially support) the M-AUDIO MIDISport Uno. Some MIDI to USB devices use an old technology known as "active sensing" and/or they cannot handle the large file transfer. Please ensure that you install the correct drivers directly from the M-Audio website. Q: I have slow patch changes on my Vetta? A: If program changes seem slow when switching from preset to preset after you've upgraded the Vetta's software, you will want to reset the program memory. Here's how: Press SAVE and scroll to page 11 "RESET FACTORY". While on this page, press SAVE to reset the Factory Bank. The right LCD will read "restoring FACTORY bank". When this process is complete, scroll to page 12 "RESET USER" and press SAVE once again. The right LCD will now read "restoring USER bank". Press TAP when the process is complete. Program change should now be back to normal. If this does not fix the problem, you want to reinstall the FLASH MEMORY on your VETTA II. This time when you are asked if you want to keep your existing patches, click NO. Q: Presets are not saved after I reboot my Vetta? A: The internal battery should be relaced. We use lithium batteries in the Vetta to store the user presets, a common replacement is the Panasonic BR2325-1HG. The current battery will need to be de-soldered and replaced with a new battery. If you are not confident in doing this replacement, it should be performed by an authorized Line 6 Service Center. Q: I get no sound when I plug my Variax into my Vetta's VDI? A: Ensure that the Variax is outputing signal and that your Vetta is receiving the informing by check the step in the Vetta manual (see 47 and 440 for more information). Also, press the "Output Setup" button then rotate the page knob to page 4/4. Look for "Format" section and turn the format knob (first from the left) to 44.1/16. Q: I am receiving an "access error" on my Vetta? A: This is an internal hardware error that needs to be serviced at an authorized Line 6 service center. Q: I am receiving eight "black boxes" in the display on my Vetta? A: This is an internal hardware error that needs to be serviced at an authorized Line 6 service center. Q: How do I find an authorized Line 6 Service Center? Click here to find a Service Center.
  23. Q: What is 'radius' on a neck? A: Radius refers to the amount of curve on the fretboard. A smaller number (i.e. 9.5") has a more pronounced curve than a larger number (i.e. 12"). Players who emphasize chording may prefer more round necks, while players who do a lot of bending may prefer flatter necks. Q: What is the nut width on the Variax electric guitars? Variax 300: 1 11/16" Variax 500: 1 5/8" Variax 600: 1 5/8" Q: What is the difference between maple (i.e. Variax 600) and rosewood (i.e. Variax 300) fretboards? A: Maple tends to be a bit brighter in tone, while rosewood tends to have a bit more sustain. Maple fretboards have some type of lacquer finish, as rosewood is traditionally unfinished. Q: What is "neck scale"? A: Neck scale is the distance from the bridge to the nut. All Variax electric guitars have a scale of 25.5" Q: What fretwire is used on the Variax Electric guitars? A: The closest fretwire in common use is the Dunlop 6130 wire, but it is not exactly the same wire. Q: What size allen wrenches are used on the Variax electric guitars? Tremolo arm and saddle height adjustment: 1.5mm Bridge height: 2.5 mm Truss Rod: 4mm Q: What kind of finish is used on the Variax? A: All Variax instruments use a polyester (yes, polyester) finish. Q: What type of glue is used in the hardware? A: Hide (i.e. horse) glue Q: What gauge D'Addario strings are on the Variax electric guitars? E: 10 (High) B: 13 G: 17 D: 26 A: 36 E: 46 (low) Variax Bass 700/705 B .130 (five-string model only) E .100 A .080 D .065 G .045 Q: What is the hole diameter for the tuning gears? A: The Variax guitars accept the standard 10mm (13/32nd") tuning gear. Q: What happens if I use different brand or gauge strings on my Variax bass or guitar? A: The results will be the same as changing string type or gauge on an analog bass or guitar. The Variax guitars are no different than most other guitars regarding setup and maintenance; the may need to be set up for different gauges play correctly, or seasonally to counteract climate changes. The Variax will accept any common string gauge for that instrument type. Q: Do the Variax guitars have a low or high output impedance? A: All Variax guitars are low impedance, and should be treated like they are active instruments. Q: What are the default custom positions? 24. Q: How do I perform a Factory Reset ("reflash") on my Variax 300/500/600/700/705? A: See the following link for the reflash procedure: Variax Reflash and Software Update F.A.Q. Q: The strings on my Variax Steel string are breaking consistently at the saddle piece. How can this be resolved? A: There may be a "burr in the saddle", meaning that there is an edge cutting into the string and causing it to break. Depending on where the string is breaking you may need to replace the piezo, the saddle piece, or both pieces. Please contact an authorized Service Center for more information. Q: I am getting a high-pitched 'squeal' when I have both the ¼" TRS cable and the Variax cable plugged into my PODxt/X3 or Vetta. How do I eliminate this? A: The high-pitched squeal is indicative of an overload of the power input buffers, as the unit is receiving power from both the TRS and the Variax Digital Cable. You will need to unplug one of the cables to remove the high-pitch noise. Q: What happens if I leave my Variax plugged into an amp while using batteries (not using the power supply)? A: If you leave your Variax plugged into your amp and are not using the power supply you will drain your batteries. If you remember to turn the volume knob on your Variax all the way down, the guitar will go into a low power 'standby' mode, but the batteries will still be draining (although at a substantially slower rate). Remember to unplug your Variax if you have finished a soundcheck and are heading off to dinner somewhere before your gig. Q: I have a dead string on my 300/500/600/700 (electric or acoustic) guitar - where can I get a replacement piezo? A: Replacement Piezo pickup/bridge saddle pieces can be purchased directly from the Line 6 webstore: Variax Piezo Element Replacements Q: When I first plug it in the sound goes on and off like the power is being turned off and on and I hear a constant click...click...click...through the amp? A: The problem sounds like it's a battery issue. If the battery's power drops below a current point, even though the batteries may seem good, the guitar will cut in and out. Even if you connect the power A/B box the guitar will still cut in and out. When this occurs, you must disconnect or change the batteries. Q: Where can I get a replacement neck and/or body for my Variax guitar? A: You can order your Variax replacement neck or body from Warmoth Instruments. Q: Can the Model Select knob on the Variax 300/600 be calibrated? A: No, the Model Select knob on the Variax 300/600 cannot be calibrated. If the model knob is "out of sync", try reflashing your instrument. If you are still having problems with the model select knob not selecting the correct model, you will need to have the unit serviced at your local Line 6 service center. Q: How do I calibrate the Model Select knob on the Variax 500/700? A: Here are the instructions on how to calibrate the Model Select knob on the Variax 500/700: *Please make sure that the output from the Variax 500/700 is plugged into an amplifier or monitoring source to hear the audio beeps from the guitar. 1. Unplug RJ45 cable from guitar. 2. Turn off Power (disconnect ¼" TRS cable from guitar). 3. Turn the volume up. 4. Pull model selector knob "up" and away from the guitar body and set it to position Custom 1. 5. Set pickup selector to 4th (neck-middle) position. 6. Set tone knob to middle position. 7. Turn on power (connect "¼" TRS cable to guitar). ONCE INITIALIZED, YOU WILL HAVE APPROX. 13 SECONDS TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE: 8. Turn tone control to min and then max. 9. You will now hear a beep sequence come from the amp or monitor source the Variax is plugged into. (The beeps will NOT come from inside the guitar itself.) 10. Turn model selector from "Custom 1" through all positions up to "Custom 2" this should be timed to approximately 1 second per physical step. (Counting: "one, one thousand", making sure to turn the pot on the one). 11. You will hear a low-high-low beep when completed. 12. Model selector will now be calibrated. 13. Press the Model Select knob back in to the guitar body to the "down" position. If you hear the low-high-low beep prior to completing the entire rotation of the model select knob, unplug the "¼" TRS cable from guitar and start over again until the timing is correct. Q: How do I calibrate the strings on a Variax Bass 700/705? A: To Activate String Calibration Mode: 1.Press down and hold the VOLUME knob, then power up the bass as follows: a.plug in a TRS cable connected to a powered XPS power supply, or b.plug in a VDI cable which is connected to a powered Bass PODxt Live. 2.The LED on the bass will appear to be orange or red (not green - if the LED is green, try again). Release the VOLUME knob after confirming that the light turned on orange/red.*** *** Note: If the light does not light up orange/red, make sure that you are able to press down on the Volume knob like a button. If it does not feel like a button, or if the knob does not travel down enough because it is to close to the pickguard, you should try removing the knob and pressing down on the Volume stem. In String Calibration Mode, all modeling is bypassed and the level of each string can be adjusted individually. To confirm you're in String Calibration Mode, listen to several Models, including a Synth Model; they should all sound the same: direct piezo. Important Note: As per the instructions below, the BLEND knob is used to adjust the volume of each string. The BLEND knob has a center detent, and that detent equals the Factory level volume for each selected string. You should adjust string levels from the center detent as a reference. Boosting levels too much may result in distortion, which is not good. For best results, listen to all strings and determine which ones may be too loud or too soft, then adjust accordingly, leaving the other strings at their detent levels. To Calibrate Individual Strings: (steps 5a & 5b for 5-string only) *After successfully powering up in String Calibration Mode, monitor the Variax Bass in the usual way, with the Volume knob at max, plugged into a bass amp, PODxt Live, etc. 1a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 1st Model, VinJ, to select the 1st string (G). 1b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the G string level with the other strings. 2a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 2nd Model, ModJ, to select the 2nd string (D). 2b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the D string level with the other strings. 3a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 3rd Model, PreBass, to select the 3rd string (A). 3b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the A string level with the other strings. 4a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 4th Model, Manta, to select the 4th string (E). 4b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the E string level with the other strings. 5a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 5th Model, Clang, to select the 5th string ( B). 5b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the B string level with the other strings. When all strings sound in balance, press down on the MODEL SELECT knob to exit String Calibration Mode. The LED will turn green and your level changes will be saved. * Rotate the MODEL SELECT knob to load a Model and return to normal operation
  25. NOTE: Because they also use 10k pots, the EX-1 Expression Pedal can be substituted with the Mission EP1-L6 or SP1-L6H Expression Pedal. Q: How do I use an EX-1 Expression Pedal with a Stomp Box Modeling Pedal? A: Power off your stomp box modeler by unplugging the left/mono input. Next, plug in your expression pedal and set the expression pedal to the full heel down position. Plug the left/mono input back in and dial up a sound you like. Now press the expression pedal forward to the toe down position, and set one of more of your knobs to another setting. Rock back and forth on your expression pedal and you'll hear your sound blend between the two sound settings you just made. Store this sound into one of your pedals memories and the toe down and heel settings will be saved as well. Example of EX-1 connected to a DL4 Modeling Pedal: - Move EX-1 to heel down, adjust the delay settings on DL4. - Then move the expression pedal to toe. - Now change only the parameters that you want to be affected. - Heel to toe sweeps between those two settings. Q: Do I need to reprogram my changes with the EX-1 every time I plug the pedal in? A: You do not need to restart your effect unit everytime you want to reset the expression pedal. Your expression pedal settings will remain the way you set them up regardless of effect knob settings. Your expression pedal settings can be saved to the effects parameters saved by the footswitches. Q: Can I use one EX-1 Expression Pedal to control two modeling (4x4) pedals? A: There are a couple ways to approach running two modeling pedals with a single EX-1. Both methods require modification (as the ohm resistance will be cut in half): - Replace the 10k pot in the EX-1 with a 5k pot, and use a mono-split instrument cable to each modeling pedal. - Remove the second jack hole cover (labeled "Output") and install a second 1/4" mono jack here. Replace the existing mono 10K pot with a double-ganged or stereo 10K pot. Install the leads from each side of the pot to it's own dedicated output jack, then use one mono 1/4" cable per jack connected to each expression pedal input on the 4x4 pedal(s). Q: How can I get replacement stickers for my Stomp Box Modeling pedal? A: The stickers for the MM4 and DL4 are attached to this document for download and printing. DL4/MM4 labels are also found at https://shop-us.line6.com/hardware/parts-and-accessories/dl4-mm4-tweak-tweez-label/.
